    I actually like how these short lessons are so simple and concise.
    long in-depth filmmaking videos are good too, but it's really helpful to have such clearly organized QUICK references as a refresher or clarification on any little practical thing I may want to consult the internet for, rather than bugging someone on the job like a noob..
    it gives more confidence for taking new gigs on sets and being efficient from the get-go. and I'm a visual learner so your clear illustrations have stuck in my memory.
    thanks for taking the time making these!

    Thank you Dave for your series!!! I'm an older guy getting back into it. I tried starting out like 15yrs ago and due to some issues couldn't continue. Now I have the support to make a go of it and your series is a great refresher course so I don't look like a total nube!! Thank you!

    You should mention the difference between Grip combo (one with gobo head) and lighting combos (ones in the video).

    Dave! Nice to see you back making some vids! I've been gone for awhile too, so I'm trying to catch up on your postings. Anyway, good video brother, just wanted to point out that, similar to the other commenter, combos come in varieties: Steel and aluminum, and grip and electric. Keep up the good work! What are some of the next pieces you have planned? Maybe the guys and I can throw some footage your way.

    Is it worth investing in both C-Stands and Combo Stands or are they both interchangeable? What are the pros / cons of each?

      @@GripTips Do you really think that a Mombo is used that much? To be sure, when ya need a REALLY high stand, a Mombo or High Walker is handy to have!
      I would go: 7 c-stands (perhaps 1 or 2 w/Turtles, 1 w/rocky mtn leg), 1 low boy, 3 combos (1 dbl riser, 2 triple riser). Assuming it's just for grips...if ya need Beefy babies & preemies, that can change things!
      Carry on, my brother! I show your videos to my students frequently! (I'm the lighting & grip professor in the Valencia Film Technology Program in Orlando.)

    Would you say the combo stand is the best all around used stand for both medium to heavier weight things. I would be getting a few of these with castor wheels but want to obviously save space, weight, and money if i can just have a few solid stands. Thanks

    • @GripTips
      @GripTips  6 років тому

      Greg Thompson I would say their the best all around, yes. And stick with “matthews” and “american”. Those companies have serious longevity in their gear.

    • @gregthompson8062
      @gregthompson8062 6 років тому

      What do you think about the hi hi rollers? There footprint is wider than combos and has a higher weight capacity but from what i gather only good for studio because they don't have rocky leg and mainly there wheels are permanently on the stands as apposted to the combos you can take wheels on and off when need be as well as they have a rocky leg. But there weight capacity and footprint is not as big or strong as hi hi's. Gotta buy smart you know.

    • @GripTips
      @GripTips  6 років тому

      Greg Thompson are you always gonna go higher than 15 feet? Are you always gonna be in a studio? And if you get a high roller, are you gonna get a ladder too? If you you’re thinking no for those answers then I’d say stick with a combo stand. I have 1 combo and 1 mombo combo and I do just fine. I can always add wheels if I need too. Hope this helps!

    • @gregthompson8062
      @gregthompson8062 6 років тому

      Yes it helps. I have worked on smaller sets on mostly still productions and see them with high high rollers but it seems like combo stands with added castors is just simply more versatile. I personally have 2 modern studio stainless beefy baby stands with slip on castors that can be taken on or off and I love the damn things. I was considering the Mombos instead of combos because I figure have the added height and beefed up solid stand for those days i'm on location when I feel it would be better but seem to find that a combo should be the first purchase and decide if Mombo later is what i would want. I like to overdue things for safety and peace of mind for windy days. But I think the combo with slip on castors has sold me as it's more versatile for studio and location. Love the channel thanks

    Are combo stands more likely to tip over if used with an extension arm than regular c-stands?

    • @GripTips
      @GripTips  7 років тому

      prottentogo like a menace are rig or? Can you be more specific?

    • @prottentogo
      @prottentogo 7 років тому

      No just a 40" ext arm with say a 4x4 solid

    • @GripTips
      @GripTips  7 років тому

      prottentogo I'm just guessing but I think the 4x would be an after thought for the stand, make sure one of the legs is pointed in the direction of the 4x, and per usual, bag it

    • @prottentogo

    Hi! How do the Matthew’s triple riser steel combo compare to the Avenger triple steel combo? I just noticed that the Avenger has a wider footprint so that would make me think it’s more stable

    • @GripTips
      @GripTips  4 роки тому +1

      Avenger is probably third or fourth on my list I’d recommend. I only go Matthews because I grew up lugging around their gear so it’s just preference. For me it’s Matthews, American, then Avenger. If you’re looking for a bigger foot print there’s also the “Mombo Combo” (I have an episode on that). Tbh the only thing so far I haven’t liked about avenger is the placement on their knobs on their Rocky Mountain c-stands and that most of the stuff I’ve seen of theirs has been some really hard plastic which has always worried me but then again, I haven’t seen one snap or fail. At my 9-5 we carry all Avenger but in the field I see more Matthews and American. Hope that helps?

    • @D_L_J_83
      @D_L_J_83 4 роки тому

      @@GripTips thanks man! I’m used to avenger triple steel combos for both lighting and using on butterfly frames. I was keen on buying some Matthew’s ones mainly because the wheels are so bloody easy to install and remove, and I do half of my work in studio so they’d be awesome. I also just checked the the mombos and they also have a very similar footprint, so I’m guessing the footprint (just 10cm more) is safe enough for butterflies on the standard triple steel combos?

    • @GripTips
      @GripTips  4 роки тому +1

      @@D_L_J_83 I’ve done butterflies on c-stands before tbh. If it’s stability for that particular purpose, tie down the frame once it’s set. The combos are a better option for stability and height. It’s funny actually, I was just thinking about buying an 8xframe today.

    • @D_L_J_83
      @D_L_J_83 4 роки тому

      @@GripTips so good! Okay maybe I’m overthinking about the footprint difference then. Yeah I definitely tie things down when outdoors. Any difference in build quality in regards to Matthew vs Avenger steel combos? The Matthews ones have these v-shaped holes and they’re proud of the knuckles/gripheads never getting jammed, but I’ve never really had that problem with Avengers. But I guess I never really know the difference til I use both extensively.

      @D_L_J_83 4 роки тому

      @@GripTips Okay I just realised that the specs on the MSE website are waaayyy off saying the mombos have 74” in footprint which is a lot more than the metric measurement they put in the specs.

    would not be happy if my assistants collapsed my stands like that

      @GripTips  3 роки тому

      Can I ask why?

    • @mrbigstufable
      @mrbigstufable 3 роки тому +1

      @@GripTips @1:09 you are making the collapsed stand unnecessarily long , they wont fit into cases (i am on the road a lot) and even in the largest studios it is always better to keep things compact... look at your stand in the camera right corner of the frame at the @1:09 ,the one leaning, that is a perfect collapsed stand (hopefully all the knuckles are tight so when pulling from cases you dont do an improv magic act). In the photo world. nearly all gear goes in cases, we dont have huge grip trucks so compact is always the way to go, especially when flying. If photo assistants collapse a stand long ways, it looks amateur and we go through gear pack and grip tutorial. I know that you are far from amateur, so was surprised to see that, so must be different in film.
