It's like the butterfly effect, every different choice they make would lead to a different outcome.

I have always found Karl to be extremely profound with his thinking, its just he has no capability to put it into words other than breaking it down to its barest point, so in a way Ricky and Karl are the perfect fit, they are both extremes in that way.
What he is trying to say about jellyfish and octopi is that they appear, move and act alien compared to most other living species, which is true. The Clive Warren idea was part of S04 E06 Black Museum in the Black Mirror series. When he tried to "see" his toe without using his eyes he was trying to do a type of meditation. I also understand his questions regarding our consciousness and the awareness of our own existence. The way he expresses it though is utterly hilarious and no one in the world takes the mick out of someone like Ricky Gervais. And Stephen Merchant really increases the overall average height of the show.
It irks me that Rick and Stephen both took one of Karl's brightest moments as one of his dumbest all because he failed to perfectly articulate his concern about not knowing if he was the clone. The way he worded it made it sound silly... as if he was witnessing both copies of himself from an outside perspective and had no way to know which of the two brains his mind belonged to... but I gathered his meaning straight away. He really is a philosopher... albeit an incredibly uneducated one lol. Karl's propensity for philosophical thinking mixed with his simple upbringing is what makes him so precious... he must be protected at all cost.
