It could also be a problem for someone with a compromised immune system. Generally, if a bite looks bad or hurts a lot, it's probably a good idea to go to a doctor to get it checked out if medical care is accessible

    • @katmiller4243

I've raised black widows for Anti-Venom research, and the most reported difficulties are from small children, the elderly, or people with compromised immune systems or allergies to bee stings. Anyone can have a bad reaction though. Be safe out there. The animals last resort is to use their venom on us. It's a waste. They use it sparingly and need it for their lives more than we do for our fun

@@StevenHughes-hr5hp That's scary. We have tons of them around here, but they're so docile, that you dang near have to crush one to get bit. Constantly have to rescue them from the bathtub. Apparently, some people have a severe reaction to the bite, while others just have some swelling/bruising.

Meh, I just watched Coyote Peterson, Brave Wilderness, get himself bitten by a giant desert centipede. It was not pretty, he was in sheer agony for several minutes, he had to use the venom extractor, first time ever, stop the cameras, also first time ever and finally succumbed to going to intensive care a few hours later because the pain was getting worse and worse and wouldn't go away. He compared it to sticking a red hot poker in his arm.

I know Jack's bite videos have gotten the most views and I've seen that black widow reaction several times. 20:54 - I remember first watching it and thinking, "wow, he's taking that bite very well." But after seeing many other bite and sting reactions, being able to recognize just how painful that bite was if it was making his adrenaline pump like that and you can hear it in his voice.
Also wanted to say, gotta give Jack a ton of credit for his ability to handle those snakes. He's so knowledgeable and skilled in handling them. How he handled that Malayan Blue Coral snake was legendary. I love the vipers though. Very interesting how their eyes differ from elapids and they have those iconic slit pupils. I've been bitten twice, both times as a kid on the toe and ankle and both when going to use the bathroom late at night. The first time I just stood there and watched it walk right up to me and bite me, I did absolutely nothing to it. Very strange behavior from us both. My leg swelled up, wasn't that painful, not like a yellow jacket and the second time was a dry bite or I just have become immune. Did I mention there is one in my garage? I was born in the Texas Hill Country. San Marcos to be exact and then lived in Wimberly for the entirety of my youth. My family owns some land that backs up to Texas State University. Theres an old College road that runs parallel to our caliche pits, and very 100 yards or so we put a bench to sit down and relax at. When I was 11 I stopped at one of them to tie my shoes as my folks were going for a walk after supper. I got tagged by an adult Western Diamondback that was coiled up under the bench. It did zero preliminary rattling beforehand and then wouldn't shut up afterwards. I was wearing canvas chuck Taylor's and it went through them like the Sun through butter! The left fang didn't seem to inject much venom, but the right one sure as hell did. Long story short I lost the feeling in the right side of my foot and had to amputate my small toe. Ive gotten back around 70% of the feeling in my foot, and it hurts when it rains. Other than that got off pretty lucky I guess. Since then I've also been bitten by an exceptionally large Black Widow and Brown Recluse. I got a dry bite from a Texas Coral Snake, which I think they merged that species with the Eastern Coral Snake. The absolute worst are still freakin Hill Country scorpions. Go get em Fire Ants!! O Ya and GIG EM AGGIES!!!!! WHOOP!

So please don’t go looking for a snake……. You might find one.

Personally, I'd put the Mojave Green and Southern Pacific ( Black Diamond) rattlesnakes at the top of the list. We had both Western Diamondback and Black Diamond rattlesnakes where I grew up in the foothills of So. Cal. We feared the So. Pacifics more, partly because they tended not to rattle - which is why I nearly stepped on one in my backyard when I was a kid.

I agree with the whole list. Another thing people need to know about some species of rattlesnakes is they are endangered animals and their extinction or even removal of them from your area could result in seeing many more rodents which could potentially result in diseases like the bubonic plague becoming more common. I admire and appreciate the rattlesnake for being in a position to do this for humans and have multiple photos of local snakes in the states of New York and Pennsylvania all taken from save distance. Like I said I appreciate how they provide a semblance of natural defense against disease like the bubonic plage which if it got to common could develop antibiotic resistance and become a real threat to society again.

I almost lost my life to a brown recluse bight back in 1993. It took a week for the doctors to figure out what it was. Left a track on my stomach the largest the size of a softball within a week. When the 1st bight exploded 10 days later I was laying n the floor because of the pressure I was feeling. Within a few minutes it blew and hit the ceiling 7 1/2ft. Above me leaving huge chunks of flesh destroyed. Took about 8 years before it totally healed. I was out of work for 6 months & took about 2 years before I could work full time again. Huge 3” deep 5” x 5” con-caved wound for years. All that paled in comparison to the breathing issues, balance and central nervous system issues I fought for years. Not a very friendly spider to me!

The biggest takeaway we can get from videos about dangerous animals. Is that although they are very dangerous. Not all of them are avtively seeking to do harm. Many times if someone has a bad encounter with one, the animal is acting in defense of themselves. When they feel threatened.
And many spider bites generally happen if they are in anpiece of clothing or in a shoe or something and tou go to put that article on, you put them in a compromising position where the only thing they can do is bite you so they themselves don't become injured. Being backed into a corner brings out the most violent instincts in any animal. It's self preservation by any means

If you're in an area where you could potentially come in contact with rattlesnakes, you should be aware that they DO NOT always rattle before they strike. Their first defense is to freeze in hopes they're not seen. They know their rattle will let you know they're there. If you step close without seeing it and then step even closer or on it in the first place, you're very likely to be bitten without ever hearing a rattle. If you see one near you, get back quickly. Most rattlesnakes can strike outwards beyond their laying position between 1/3 and 1/2 of their total body length. They don't leap through the air or chase you, but you do need to quickly qive them space. Leave them alone and, please, please, please, do not kill them.

    • @shitloveaduck
      @shitloveaduck 5 місяців тому

Well said. They can strike up to 2/3rds their body length!! Yikes! I live where we have Prairie Diamondbacks (closely related to Western Diamondbacks). They are also dangerous. In Canada it’s illegal to kill ANY Rattlesnake. The Timber Rattlesnake has already been extirpated from Canada and the others grow & reproduce slower than where it’s warmer. Due to the longer colder winters there’s also a higher mortality rate while wintering.
The bite is very painful, I know! I then had to climb about 150 vertical ft at about 30 degrees slope to get back to a radio & vehicle! Pre cell phones. THEN it was 2 hours to the nearest hospital driving. Half that time by helicopter, but they didn’t treat the snakebite that serious. In the interest of saving time I drive myself to meet the ambulance that was coming from the small town nearby. I was in an area they could never have gotten to with the ambulance as I was wayyy in the back country. I was in severe pain, the blood had distributed the venom throughout my body. I was sweating profusely and finding it very hard to focus. When I saw the ambulance I just drove my truck into the ditch, crawled out and laid propped up on my elbows until they got to me. They all knew me as we were all volunteer members with the local fire & ambulance. It was load & go because they knew how tough & stubborn I was and I just said “Thanks everyone, now please take me to the hospital.” There were profanities in there, I’m a red neck after all 😂😂, I just left them out. They never had seen me ask for help before!
I had multiple doses of antivenin and an overnight stay in the hospital. I stayed in the city though because they said I may lose my leg below the knee yet. I was bit in the top half of the calf. The snake was over 4 ft long. I could have stayed in the hospital but family lived nearby. When they cut the baseball sized chunk of meat out of my calf, I gave in & stayed for about 2 weeks (if I remember right) while they did skin grafts etc. it’s an ugly wound, but the calf is almost 100%. There are days when it can get sore if I’m on my feet all day, especially moving cattle. I’m retired now so it hasn’t hurt in a long time, 4+ years or so.
They said if I hadn’t called in there was a good chance I would have died of gangrene at the very least!! They are serious wounds if they envenomate you!

I've read somewhere that rattlesnakes are slowly losing or not using their rattles and eventually will lose them altogether bcuz humans are killing them for their rattles or food or just straight up killing them for nothing. Bcuz the rattle is making it easier for ppl to find them.

I have managed to only get bit by one of these species in all my years. It was a brown recluse that bit me on my middle finger. It was swollen for a couple of months, then itched off and on for almost the next three years. I wouldn't recommend intentionally getting bit by one since I have personally seen the results of one of the truly bad ones. The patient killed and brought in the spider that bit him, which was identified as a brown recluse spider. They were originally treated with antibiotics and steroids. They came back in one month later with a golf ball sized whole in their calf where the tissue had rotted away. In the end, they lost their lower leg from the infection from that wound caused by the spider.

He said as long as you arent very young, very old, immune compromised then there is pretty much no serious risk other than infections. The number one slot is really venomous snakes as a whole, but our larger and more potent rattlesnakes easily are the worst and most painful venomous bites you can receive. I will be making a specific snake bite tier list in the future ranking our more dangerous snake bites but until then know that our other snakes (copperheads, cottonmouths and coral snakes) rest at a comfortable 1.5 ranking in this list. But before leaving, sigh my foot found a fire ant hill which wasnt a mound yet. I never stripped so fast in my life. The dr that took care of my recluse bites, the fact you rot from the inside out, 4 days and the worst one was as big as the palm of my hand. They hurt!
