However, you're right about him crashing more than he should.

Charles' development as a driver has been concurrent with the development of his car-so it has been the fastest he has ever driven. The other guy knows fasters rides.

I want to be wrong, but I think this is a bad move for Lewis.
- Both teams are behind RB.
- Ferrari can get a good 1-off qually/race result
- Merc are more consistent across the season
- For either team to get one over on RB, both drivers need to work together
- Charles won't be a 2nd driver in 2025; George was playing that role but has no reason to keep that up in 2024
So unless the Merc has gone backwards over the winter (doubtful) or Hamilton is only after a few more race wins but doesn't care about the 8th WDC, then this is a very high-risk strategy. Or maybe he thinks he can do what Alonso and Vettel couldn't; I guess proving that he can win with a team they couldn't do it with could be tempting.
I agree with you, I think the main reason for this move to Ferrari was just a preference, he wanted to drive for Ferrari before retiring. If he gets the 8th, he makes history, if he retires, he does it from Ferrari, he checked the box, now he can say he`s done it all in this sport. Seals his legacy.
I think he just wants a few years at Ferrari before retirement, purely to say he drove for Ferrari in F1. No one has a good chance of catching RB, and Ferrari is just *the* team to retire at
Agreed on all points except one: the car.
It's entirely possible that Mercedes is still blindly throwing darts at the board hoping something hits a bullseye with the W15 and Lewis might be picking up on that already. You don't win 7 driver's championships and not learn a thing or two about car designs and engineering a competitive car. He himself recognized Adrian Newey knocked it out of the park with RB's design philosophy for the current ground effect era citing his exceptional understanding of aeronautics.
We might see yet another season of mixed results for Mercedes given they're starting basically from scratch, but I think it's more likely that the car still won't fundamentally be where it should to win races.
Regardless, this is a swan song move for LH. To finish out with Ferrari would be a nice end to his career regardless of winning another title or not.
The potential downsides are obvious in Lewis's decision to drive here.
The interesting upside is putting Ferrari's new development and strategy structures in contact with this particular pilot.

Fernando makes perfect sense for Mercedes. Hire him for 2 years or 3 at most, while Kimi Antonelli goes through F2 and then the mandarory Williams phase, and once he is ready , drop Fernando for Kimi
I agree that Albon looks like the most likely option if you assume that Mercedes want a long-term Number 2 for Russel ... but the existence of Kimi Antonelli surely has to change that equation, and even if Kimi flops and never becomes ready , you can always just get Albon later, hire Fernando now and replace him with Albon after 3 years.
I agree. Alonso is the sensible choice. He’s got star-power, he’s a safe pair of hands, he’s on-par with Hamilton, he goes along well with Russel, and his timeframe is ideal for Mercedes.

Not a fan of LH, but I give him props for taking on the challenge of driving a Ferrari F1 car. It will be interesting to see how he goes in 2025 up against LeClerc. I feel for Sainz Jr, he had moments last year where he could show his talent and speed. Others have also linked him to Audi. I hope not, for his sake. He doesn't need to take part in a 3 year "building program" like Bottas, that doesn't seem to improve or build anything....

F1 drivers simply want the fastest car to compete for championships. Mercedes clearly has the edge over Ferrari, especially with the upcoming engine regulations.
How do you think Mercedes would fire Lewis? Do you think that might look exactly like the current situation?
Do you really think Mercedes didn’t notice that Lewis lost to Russell and the year before Bottas joined to Rosberg? Without Bottas Lewis is currently 2-1 down over the last three seasons to his teammates (when not counting Bottas that Mercedes made sure didn’t race Lewis). While asking for top money… And Lewis is old (doesn’t help the Mercedes brand if you can hardly exit your car while your teammate has no issues), and has many demands. Indeed, a situation where you probably lose your seat. And Mercedes t lets him pull the plug himself.

End of the day Lewis is 2-1 down in seasons won against his teammates over the last three years (not counting Bottas who was specifically signed to bot threaten Lewis) and Lewis now is gone at Mercedes.
And of Lewis loses to Leclerc all kinds of other excuses will be thought of. His age most likely. Luckily Lewis recently stated he feel better than ever. Funny how Toto said there was nothing between George and Lewis ontrack.

Let's not forget one thing.
Mazepin tested the W10 in 2019.
The time he set during the test, compared to the previous week qualifying on the same track, would had put him P2 on the grid, right behind Bottas, and in front of Hamilton, Vettel and Leclerc.
Also, his "friend" Mick (Schumacher) is Mercedes reserve driver.

Don't see what all the fuss is about, so a fading star is going to a average team in the twilight of his career, so what. It will be interesting to see if Charles and Lewis can drag the best out of each other as teammates however.

I think the problem with the second seat at Mercedes now is that Toto doesn't want a long term prospect, whoever gets the seat is going to be a placeholder until Andrea Kimi Antonelli is ready for it.

First thing first: Will, I hope you get better soon and back to the snarkyness we all enjoy so much. I am looking forward to your coverage of both F1 and Indy again this year. Now I have a few predictions for 2025.
Perez will be out at RB. But all is fine as I think he can easily find a home in either the WEC or IMSA especially in an LMP2 car. I predict Tsunoda being promoted to Perez's old ride. If we want to get really funky I could say that Ricciardo goes lead driver at Alpha Tauri (or whatever it is they are calling themselves now) with Liam Lawson fitting into Yuki's old seat. But let us not get that crazy yet. I actually think Sainz should get Yuki's seat and the lead drive at Alpha. Ricciardo will stay as second driver with him. I think in 2025 that Piastri will jump from McLaren to Mercedes and go second to George and Lawson moves to Piastris seat with a full time jump into F1 finally. Albon could join Gearge at Mercedes but I do not see him wanting to be second driver.
Hamilton's signed a multi-year contract. Whether this is a good move or a great move depends on how long it is. If it's like 2 or 3 years, then it's a great move - Ollie Bearman (or another Ferrari Driver Academy driver) will be able to spend one or two seasons in lower formulas then move on to Haas or whatever to gain experience until Hamilton vacates the seat for him. I don't believe any of them would be ready to step into a Ferrari seat before then. I assume that's the plan from Ferrari's end. And if there are issues with developing their academy talent. they'll still have the option or re-signing at a minimum one of the top ten drivers of all time.

Who cares about 2025, there is going to be delicious intra-team intrigue this year. Russell will claim he's No.1 and Ham wont want to yield. Sainz is going to be completely unhinged making up his own strategy and defying his engineer. No team orders will be followed, this is going to be awesome. Toto is going to have to take a mental health break by Canada. This is the best thing that could have happened, at least there will be something interesting instead of boring Verstappen

Sir Oyster IQ, i know right what it was back then i follow the sport since 89. that's why i say this. over 20 is too much considering the speed of the cars. during qualifications, it's a real nightmare because you don't even have the time to understand a car is coming behind that it's already past you. and it's not maintainable when everybody needs to have space to do a good lap time. there are always drivers penalized by that and it's annoying. so now go play LEGOS. F1 isn't for you visibly.

once again Lewis never did dream of it like Vettel per exemple. in 2021 he said, if i have an opportunity to go red because Merc is failing then yes! otherwise it's not my thing. so that means, had Merc had less stubborn engineers he would've stayed but they are deaf and it pisses Lewis off. just because Lewis won with their knowledge doesn't mean he can't have anything to say about the car. Merc's mistake is here.

If you don’t think Lewis will have at LEAST as much say in the car development as Charles, you’re crazy. I think a large part of the reason Ferrari would spend the type of money they’ll be spending on Lewis, aside from the marketing, will be to get some more seasoned development input than they can get from Leclerc.

Just listend to an interview this morning. Mercedes was NOT informed.
Lewis and Toto had a presheduled meeting yesterday, to discuss something for the season and it was on that meeting that Lewis basically was (meaning from the interview, not word by word) "Well, you know i only said last week, i would stay with Mercedes forever? Yeah, i lied... the roumors are true, im out"
The interview also said, that Leclerc was in on it and he signed his contract AFTER beeing told that Hamilton had signed
Nigel Mansell was 39 when he won the F1 World Championship so don't count out Blessed in Red just yet.
I hope Carlos don't end up being on the sidelines. I hope he finds a place in a good midfield team atleast
