1942 Dodge Truck Carburetor Fix! Tuning, A Test Run, And A Dodge Truck History Lesson
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- In this video: Carter B&B carburetor overhaul; how to repair a warped carburetor top plate (for some applications); how to properly connect the vacuum advance line on your Dodge or Chrysler flathead engine; an example of the difference between a pipe fitting and an inverted flare fitting, and the importance of understanding the two; a discussion of Dodge truck model designations 1939-1947 (TC, VC, WC, WD, etc.); and much more.
This 1942 Dodge WD21 is back for one more episode I wasn't even planning to make. But a horribly leaky carb seemed like a problem worth diving into, so here we are. Hopefully I can get this old Carter carburetor to keep all (or most) of its fuel supply on the inside instead of pouring everywhere as it does now. And if that works out, we just might have time for a test run - and a history lesson. @rocketresto
I’m here because I heard there was cake
I brought a knife, I heard there was Cheesecake.
Was it ice cream Cake from UTG. 😂🤷♂️
I heard corn dogs
Someone say , cake 🎂 😋 ??
I'm here because the cake is a lie!
Yes, the older iron sure is neat looking and love the Art Deco Styling- but the average person was lots smaller then, too.
Nice truck, cool to see it roadworthy again.
Thanks for the history lesson, highly appropriate for Memorial day. Although I'm kind of a peace creep my family has had many patriotic veterans. Gramps was a WW2 sharpshooter. His service left him disabled. Miss ya gramps!
God bless your grandfather. ❤ A real American Hero. 🇺🇲
@@tonyb3864 Thanks, he had several citations EAME theater ribbon with two bronze stars, purple heart with one bronze cluster,C.I.B, meritorious and distinguished unit awards, and more, he was very humble but I've always been dang proud on his behalf.
It's never a rant when your spewing facts
Wow! I'm impressed! Someone who actually knows about inverted flare fittings, tapered pipe tapped holes, and on your previous video you knew what a core plug was! Most everyone else has devolved into calling them freeze or frost plugs. Even when they are installed in the air passages of some cast iron or cast aluminum intake manifolds.
I've always felt that if a person can't get the simple things right, what else are they wrong about? Anyhoo, great job!!👍
I have to admit that I only stopped calling them freeze plugs because people bothered me about it several times. I know that’s not what they do, but it’s a common colloquialism. Anyway - thanks!
Excellent job jamie.. reviving old carburetors is a lost art ..you nailed it as usual.. I've always liked old trucks..they are fun I've worked on a few..dodge made some pretty durable trucks in their day..help keep them running .. Cheers 🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
They really are wonderful old trucks. Driving one is one of those damn near "bucket list" things
I'd wish upon any enthusiast, especially Mopar folks.
Should the improbable happen again in whatever time I have left above dirt and one finds its'
way into my life again, it'll do nothing but improve my less-than-sunny disposition.
Thanks as always, Jamie.

I really love the new "armpit cam". It's a win! 😁
I like that too. Haha.
Your projects are reminiscent of the nonsence I participate in around here. Without the required blood letting. (It's tradition around this house)
Keep up the good work!
Haha… you think I don’t remove chunks of skin and let out varying amounts of my own blood on a near daily basis 🤣 I’m staring at a hole in my hand from last night as we speak! And wondering if my tetanus shot is still good…
It doesn't have to be fast to look awesome. You did a great job and by the way, I just started working on my tractor, it's a 50's something Ford 8N. Working on wiring, gauges and implement attachments. One of these days, I'll get back to working on my Dodge Van that still needs a 5.9 engine.
I learned a lot, thanks! Note to self; remove doubled up gaskets.
Our 56 carb never gave a stitch of trouble. Part of the reliability of these flat heads. My Uncle got one running that sat for over 40 years. He put a battery in it and fresh gas and it ran. Our 56 1 ton ran for years without water, four freeze cracks in the block.
When I was a kid, I liked building model cars. The experience of assembling small parts, using the instruction sheets and diagrams was very helpful when I started rebuilding carbs, starters, generators, etc.
And I heard you use the governor and generator terms correctly. But then, I have tinnitus! 😁
You and me both 😅
I've NEVER been on any U tubers live, commenting, but to listen to your gopel,I may just sell my soul...lol
You’re definitely welcome to join. Most of us don’t bite. Haha.
Love those era trucks! Thank you Jamie!
Another fine how video. Many thanks. I really enjoy them.
Looks so cool , even if its slow , rattles your fillings out and has the turning circle of an oil tanker . still want one
Thank you again for awesome content and closure on this vehicle. You are very good at telling a complete story.
You gotta love the small daycab window off the back of those old Dodges. 👍
Awesome fix for a awesome old truck!👍
Enjoyed the history or your rant...good content and thanks...🔧🔧🐐👍
That is a nice looking truck
really a nice truck sir.
Like the Homage to Charles Phoenix….”Bask in the glory “
Safety squints 😆 🤣 loved that. Awesome video as usual. I love green Dodges.
Just a reminder, tighten the fan belt and stop forgetting things. 👌
Cool truck
Beautiful!
Yay! A DDG video for me whilst I drink my iced tea reward for mowing (most) of the lawn.
Great video as always dude!
I don't know why seeing original steel fuel line cut, with rubber line worm clamped on the stub is so disappointing to me. First world problem, huh? More coffee. Onward & upward! Thanks for sharing with us Jaime.
I’m not a fan either, but replacing that wasn’t on my list.
@Jamie, I watch several channels and one of them Casey LaDelle uses a camera that clips onto his hat and makes watching you work so much easier and would be great for the driving.
I have that attachment, a wrist mount, a chest mount… etc. It’s just not me.
Nice tutorial, thanks 😊
Nice one!
Do more on the PW serious.
I think there is also a wm type "m" stands for military.
Yes, that is correct. The Power Wagon series went through several designations. My ‘48 was a B-1-PW-126. Later, they were the WDX. When the W series Power Wagon (four wheel drive counterpart of the regular D series truck) hit the market, the original Power Wagon was still being produced - and it continued to be through 1968, after which it could no longer meet safety standards in the US. They had long touted it as the “military style” truck, and its final designation in line with the other contemporary trucks became WM300.
thank's for the ride.
I found the aftermarket needle and seats on Carter BBD's are also junk. Happened to a friend who rebuilt one. You know how many times coasting to thr side of the road and pulling off the engine cover on my 77 Dodge Van to pull apart the BBD. Not a Carter fan, the YF 1BBL on Ford's is exhibit A.
In 1942 the salesman would have said if you want comfort buy a car. If you have work to do get a truck
Oh absolutely. This thing wouldn’t have ever been a commuter. It sure is interesting how far pickups have come in that regard.
Cool Truck👍
To think that cars used to be this SIMPLE.
Mmm WF are the most bounce for mile ever! and never use them to get logs where the road doesn't exist, you'll bounce your head off the roof, I still get headaches when I see those trucks. But I still love em.
Happy memorial day everyone
I have a 12mile round trip to work...i totaly would daily drive that ol girl sometimes during the warmer months here in Michigan...Shes a Beauty!
that was fun
nice
That truck is fucking cool!
I know it!
@@DeadDodgeGarage I can’t fit inside (6’5”) but I still like it.
That is one beautiful machine, maybe it need wipers on the inside also though...
You may be onto something there… thank you!
Well its better then nothing great Job buddy u got any stickers for sale for the toolbox
On my website! Go to deaddodgegarage.com and click merch! Thanks.
Would you please not place the camera so close to the grinder, I was not wearing eye protection ;)
😅
WT , wet turtle 🐢!
Was that a gm alternator I seen there
Yep. That’s the move.
I have a power wagon 1946. it's a wax. It was rated as a 3/4 ton by the military. one ton by civilian. if you subtract empty wight from gross vehicle weight. 9700lb - 4800lb =4900lbs. that's almost 2.5 tons. and ive had more than that in it. That's why these trucks are not smooth riding trucks.
The civilian truck has a good bit more spring than its military equivalents. The first WW2 trucks were actually only half ton rated. They were later beefed to 3/4 ton. When I got my ‘48, an M37 came from the same place. The M37 rode much, much better than my Power Wagon. I had always intended to pull a good bit of that spring pack to soften the ride a bit.
Napa never any parts available
Nahhhh, they’ve got the good points over there
oops
🤔
hi jamie..love them old trucks!!!!... did i hear you use the "F" word ? not in my shop bro!!!! shame on you!
😅
If you can afford a Dodge, dodge a Ford XD
Don’t shift it like a race car.
I use the clutch in my “race car.” And don’t rev match.
I do believe you are missing the power wagon. Yes you did call the generator governor but who the f@$× cares. Well obviously some people do.😂
Some people do 😅 I don’t know how I missed that one in the edit. Oh, yeah I do! I did it on my damn phone. I can honestly say that driving this thing reminded me how miserable the Power Wagon was. Fun, but miserable nonetheless. I still feel ok about my decision.
Really dig this old truck and the cool content it has given us! Flatheads are just cool.
Rebuilding a carb, very proud of you. I was about 14 yo when rebuilding my first carb, pops had taken it apart and got totally frustrated and smartly walked away to chill, I took the pile of parts, and the exploded assy diagram, put it all back together, car ran great afterwards..
I was 17 when I rebuilt my first. It was a Carter BBD, which I have had a love for ever since. I thought I did a good job, but I made one minor tactical error. They include multiple base plate to main body gaskets, and I neglected to verify I was installing the right one. The car fired up and ran great - until it got warm. There was no idle fuel, because the passages were blocked by the gasket. It was worth making the mistake for that lesson to stick with me.
Jamie your experience is so spot on!
Puts me in mind of my brother's old 51 b series pilot house. That one was a 3 speed fluod drive. Used to put it on the old Milwaukee road Trax in Doty and run over to Raymond. Great fun, tho I doubt legal😮.
That truck is really cool! It’s neat to see the ancestor of the more modern dodge trucks and how far things have come since then.
An old couple were in their pickup headed to town when the wife said " I really miss the old days when I would cuddle up to you and lay my head on your shoulder while you drove around. The husband said me too but I haven't moved!
That's a cool old truck. A 2 speed rear end would be cool too , just my opinion
Agreed - and definitely a common sight in this sort of truck.
Once the paint gets buffed out I think that truck is going to be gorgeous. If memory is right I think production of civilian vehicles stopped in February if 1942 which is why the 42's are rare
I want my Free Hat.
Man, even I have to buy my hats 😅 I’m way overdue for a new one.
I'm a Ford guy, and even though you seem to have a disdain for Ford products, and mention it snidely at times, I still love your channel. I really appreciate your sense of humor and your even-tempered, laid-back approach to everything you do. Keep up the great work. 🙂 Bruce, in Eureka, CA.
I’ve had a few Fords over the years - and I will certainly have more in the future. Haha. I promise that my disdain for Fords has been well earned - it’s not just because they aren’t Dodges.
Great videos series have enjoyed them. Love my 42 1/2 ton, fun truck to drive and I can hit 50!!! with mine. Yes the interior room in those models truck are very cramped inside. Thankfully they addressed this problem in the 48 model year. My 48 is a much more comfortable truck to drive.
Nice! I traded a synthesizer and some speakers for my ‘46. We flat towed it four blocks to a friend’s place with the driveline brake. I adapted a ‘66 single pot master cylinder to get the brake pedal to do something, ratchet strapped the bed to the frame, converted to 12v with GM alternator, added trailer tail lights and 12v headlights, dumped some fuel and water in various receptacles, then fired it up and cruised it home 30 miles at night at about 50. It did great, but did crud up the glass fuel bowl and filter a couple times. That was a cool truck, and I have regrets for not doing anything more with it.
In thems 40's nobody woulda called anything the "VD" model, fer reasons ya might not unnerstan....
Lol
Living in a place that rains constantly must be a challenge. Speaking from the "sunshine" state.
It can be at times. It’s not my favorite but there are other redeeming qualities.
That's a nice truck. I think i want a sweep or swept. Whatever you call them. Awesome to hear all the info. Thanks
Thanks for the post - I’ll be referring back to this one when i finally get around to installing the Mike’s Carbureator kit in my P12’s B&B.
People like you spend all your time fixing things people like me shamelessly messed up. When you're not picking your phone up off the floor :-) Very cool truck!
Nice vid, love the '42 🤜🤛
I agree those are cool old trucks but not really suited to any type of todays daily driver life, I can see it being used to take a big round hay bail out to field to feed some cows, or move things around the farm. maybe even sneak into town for some feed or a load of wood. But peronally I like the later 60's era cabs like what you have planned for your ramp truck they have a lot more room for people and creature comforts.
Another reason why , love your content . Throughly enjoy the history lessons
#DodgeBrothers 🇺🇲
#ProfessorJamie 👨🎓
Cannot comment on the alphabet soup Dodge used to designate the truck models back then, but I do agree that Dodge trucks from that era are very cool.
I'm still liking the swept line dodge cab ramp truck swap idea Jamie sir..
I just had same problem with new needle and seat! Intermittent geyser. Put the old ones back 👍
OK, you made me MISS MY 46 Chev. half ton. 🤥💜👍
At 11:07 like the shifter knob! 😊😊
A phone holder with a suction cup will fix the phone flying problem.
Yeah, I have one - and I often forget it.
Love it. Thanks helping to preserve her.
loose belts have been my issue as of late. I have a million of them for small blocks yet not a single one will tighten up my alternator enough. YAY time to talk to the guys at the parts store who wouldn't know a distributor pickup from a knock sensor
You’ll be lucky if they know what either of those things are…
You did call the generator a governor. It's OK., we knew what you meant.
Well… crap
Also Peg from Zip Ties N Bias Plies built a camera/phone stand from old speaker magnets and a Milwaukee drill battery. Perhaps you need one.
A friend actually sent me a magnet mounted phone holder. That’s what was vibrating apart in the first video on this truck 😅
Yeee Yeee!
Find two cabs and make one extended cab out of them. A guy I know did that with a couple of 1928 Ford AA trucks. Turned out pretty nice and he is over 6 ft tall.
It can definitely be done. Lots of Dodges done that way these days. But it’s not for me. I’d just keep the two trucks 😅
Drive 3 legged. The passenger is so close he could work the Gas and the driver could work the clutch and the brake.
I have a friend out in the sticks who has a pilot house truck similar to this. It hasn’t had working service brakes in decades, so your co-pilot is the brake man running the driveline brake.
Very cool truck
To much fun
The elbow view. That’s a new one. Is that the new TicToc trend. ??
It could be 🤣
Can you use a 1 barrel from a modern car on your flat head
By modern I’m sure you mean 60s-70s. Absolutely! I had a crappy ‘42 Dodge that was missing the carb. I installed a spare single barrel from a six cylinder Chevy II. It worked really well.
