On March 6th, 1985, I landed at the airport in El Paso en route to Ft. Bliss for army basic training. We were transported to the base via a car like you're working on. Pretty darn cool.
You are right those steering columns that lock cyl gear was a problem, until they changed to a metal type gear then the rack was prone to breaking,a little more work to change it.Thumbs up.
My old man drove a Black 8 door Aerobus as a chauffeur for the American Embassy in London England in the mid 70’s. The usual car he drove was a 71/72 LTD Station Wagon & on the occasions he brought the Aerobus home it felt like an old classic compared to the LTD at the time. On our little street on the edge of London it took up our house & the neighbours house when parked. Plus back in the mid 70’s cars were still a bit of a luxury in the London suburbs & this thing blew the neighbours minds. I would have been about 5 at the time & he’d let me & my friends play in it after school. I do remember plain black forward facing bench seats & door cards. And a weird memory of me & my friends having trouble getting the doors unlocked because the tops of the door lock buttons were snapped off on every door. Weird how watching this video instantly brought back that particular memory detail 🤔 Hope there’s a part 2 🤞
How many Minis end to end would equal the length of one of those Aerobus cars? I have owned 3 English cars A Rover 2000 a Mercury Capri(Ford) and now I own a 1996 XJ6 but that one gives me a lot of trouble because something keeps draining the battery over a few days and I cant find it, I used to work on a Rover based car (Honda drive line) in 1988 in Beverly Hills Ca it was called Sterling .

@@MortskeRepair Just finished watching. You're thinking about lowering a stretched vehicle??? You obviously don't remember The Presidential limo getting high centered in Dublin in 2011 (I had to look it up). That vehicle is probably higher than a regular limo.
Way back in time,1977, me and the fam, left Cal-ifornia in a "56" Chevy Bel-Airre 4 door Sedan. We had a one owner Deluxe 2 tone 8 cylinder, Bit-Chin ride that only had 25 K on the clock. At 2 A.M. while cruizin in Utah we came upon a fellow pulling a gooseneck carrying 2 mid 50's Chevy's. At 70 MPH I pulled alongside and cruzed along, then stepped on it. We made it from Santa Barbara to Detroit in less than 48 hours with a kid and dog and all our shit in the trunk. What a buggy. Had to sell to pay for school.
I live in Kalamazoo where Checker cabs were made. The old factory is gone but remnants of the test track are still there where they tested them. Also one last thing. PUDDINS FAB SHOP RULES!!! LOL!!! Love your show too!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is why I love your channel. Always something cool/different. Not just the same old cars and trucks. Well that and Duff. Btw, put the blower motor in it just to be that guy.
I rebuilt one of those about 15 years ago. Some guys from New York flew out for a high school reunion trip. Buying the Checker sight unseen, they hired me to get it roadworthy. They drove from Alta, CA to Los Angeles where they got some new exhaust and picked up more friends. They needed a new alternator on the way, but made it all the way to New York without any major issues.
Nothing much better than finishing up the great Mortske High Life Award winning repair and restoration garage. Better than cable TV and have a great show stopping finisher for this morning and I know that I am going to work in the morning knowing that the new one is coming along really quick so I better enjoy this one before the new one comes along.
Bernie shoving on the ole Checker was a like a shot of nostalgia for me. In the early '60's when cars still had steel bumpers, not plastic clad aluminum ones, it was a common sight to see Gas Station Pick-ups & Wreckers flat pushing cars. Stuck cars in the winter got pushed alot too cuz I live in Wisconsin, & we got way more snow in those days than we do now.
Great video and thank you for telling us the history. I enjoyed listening to the history of the company. Thank you for taking the time to go over the history with us
