This video was great, thanks Chris, hope you're feeling a bit better by now.
I got COVID two weeks ago, and have Dorney Lake Marathon this Sunday. Had my first run back on Sunday after missing 9 days of the taper - breathing and HR were fine. I feel better about missing stuff now having watched this - hopefully I have enough training in the bank to be ok.
Just watching your Dorney video from last year now for a bit of prep/inspiration!
    Cheers

Great advice Fordy and hope you feeling better soon. To be honest after training through a terrible winter in 2013 only to have a disaster in the London marathon the end of it I vowed never to do a spring marathon again. Since then it’s been autumn marathons only for me and summer training which I love and less chance of picking up something nasty along the way. Maybe it’s an age thing ( I’m 61 now ) but just love running in warmer weather. Chicago to look forward to in October.
    Thanks Chris 👍

I really appreciated this video. I have been battling with cold and flu symptoms and have taken some time off, but felt really guilty. But I really didn’t take any time off during preps that I regret.

I have covid right now so this video was very apt to me! Feel too ill to do any exercise anyway but trying to watch videos about getting back to running after illness. This is the first time I'm having covid and I don't really get ill. I've been so unwell though for 6 days and doesn't seem to be getting better so don't think I will run again any time soon. It's annoying as I was definitely at my fittest in years before I caught covid. Typical I guess!

Just the advice I was looking for. I am in week two of an 18 week plan and I have just been hit with a cold. I'm going to rest for a week and pick up in week three.

I suffer with Hayfever, which in strong cases gives you flu / cold symptoms as your a side effect of your body fighting itself & inturn wears your body down. I had 3 TDO total days off this week, so my immune system can have a rest, then back to it yesterday with a Park Run Half Marathon Sandwich & another day off today. Back to the plan hopefully next week. Get well chap, you are not alone

Midwife here, and the number of times I've gone into work with a stinking cold, I can no longer count. The last few days, my asthma has been awful, and I felt so guilty not doing my 13-mile run, but my chest is more important than the run.

this is very interesting as i am watching this with a cold and also arguing with myself to run or not (1 week of nothing so far :( )

Great advice. My sister is a GP and she says the reason why you should never run with an infection is that your heart suffers micro-inflammation during colds/flu/covid, which isn't a problem normally, but when you're pushing your HR for long periods this can cause Myocarditis.
This was also the reason people were told to avoid cardio exercise for 1/2 weeks after covid vaccines, as they produce an immune response similar to having an infection.

Wonder if my allergies which were off the charts that week impacted by performance

@@FordyRuns I'd say there's a hangover period after any infection of at least a week where your body is getting back to normal. So you're exactly right to say look after yourself with good nutrition and supplements during any infection. I normally take 500mg vit C daily and I double that when I have a cold. Do you take vitamin D? It's fantastic for your collagen and ligaments and can aid recovery time after prolonged exercise. Around 3,000 IU daily is seen as a sensible max dose but you may need less during Summer.

Literally just trained for 3 months to do my first 50 miler and bang the week before I get a stinking cold 🥴 body never been fitter but immune system much have been whacked. Luckily being a taper week I didn't need to run but it was still there on the day but couldn't drop out. It got done but probably at a slower rate 😁 turned into a sinus infection.
