      When I was a kid (11 or so) I woke up in the morning with a cold and 39°C. I had a cross-country ski race the very same morning. My parents didn't want me to go, but I insisted quite heavily and they gave in (which didn't happen very often 😯). One aspirin later my parents brought me to the race. That day I won. And after the race, I was free from symptoms ! Can't explain what happened really, and I wouldn't recommend this method for getting better.

      At the start of autumn this year i broke into a pool facility and we swam around a little. When i went ahead and dove to the bottom and got up again i swallowed water but didnt want to cough because we didnt want to get caught. So from there on my lungs felt a little bad and i got a cold. I took a little break from exercise, because it really felt bad. After about a week or two i decided to go for a run up the hill through the little forest we have, but by then it had gotten a little colder. And yeah i pushed myself, which ended up in me feeling like my lungs would come out my mouth. I walked back home pretty bummed out.

      The day after a long road bike ride, I thought I was just sore, and tried to run 6 miles. But I literally lost my lunch on the side of the road, and had to walk 3 miles home. Then I was sick for a month...

      I'm a very stubborn runner and will pretty much run no matter what. There have been a few times when common-sense should have prevailed, but I am a Very Stubborn Runner. Here are some "greatest hits."
      1) Hard eight mile tempo with a fever and a cold. I was starting to see things that weren't there around the halfway point and don't recall the final two miles whatsoever.
      2) Raced a 10K with a bronchial infection. Managed to set a PB despite being sick. Did not get out of bed for two days following the race.
      3) Learned the hard way not to run if one is fighting off the effects of food poisoning. Even if one "goes" before they run, one will most likely need to "go" whilst running. Also, never, ever, trust a fart.
      The past few years, when I feel a sickness coming on, I'll simply run a few miles at 5k pace or faster, take a hot shower, some medicine, and go to bed early. I haven't been sick in over a year, but I'm sure eating clean & plant-based along with running roughly 50mpw has something to do with it as well.

    I've always treated a cold as a short lived injury. Or maybe think of a recovery period after a marathon. When you're sick, it's only real bad for a few days. I always take those off completely. As I start to feel better, I'll ease back into things, just like you would with an injury or after you've wrecked your quads in a trail 10k you didn't prepare for. The pace is as slow as possible and If I notice I suddenly feel worse, I'll wait, instead of force it. To me, it's always better to miss 2-3 runs rather than 2-3 weeks. If it happens to be your peak workout for your big race, that sucks, but you could risk still being sick for the race if you don't take time to recover.

    I ran a half with a cold last year (symptoms were below collar).
    It literally nearly killed me. I was overtraining, sleep-deprived, and overstressed...basically asking for it. I was ill for weeks.
    I think I'm wiser now.

    Perfect - I am with a cold right now. Good news is: it is my first since March, which is a record for me. I used to get one every three weeks or so, winters, summer the whole year. After I started running and eating better and sleeping more, it went down to 2 a year. That is the good news. Bad news is: I have a 10k trail race Saturday 😖

    I just got over my sinus allergies acting up over the last 12 days or so, I didn’t run a step during that period. I feel miserable when the sinuses flare up. Save the energy.

    I'm lucky in that I generally don't get sick except for a slight cold once a year when the seasons change. But I keep running if it's just a head cold. I haven't had a fever for years but I wouldn't run if I had one or if the cold was below the neck. One secret weapon is a Buff when it's chilly out. I've found that covering the neck area really helps - I have about 6 different buffs, a different one for almost any weather. Sleep is so NB and should be a priority for everyone. Reducing stress is also key. If I have one of those weeks where I'm travelling a lot for work and catching like five or six flights over 5 days then I will probably skip a run or two just because the travel, especially air travel, is such a stess on the body. Skipping a workout doesn't make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things. Better to get proper rest and get back to the grind when you have the time. But don't make excuses! You have to be honest and not just skip workouts when you don't feel like it or when the weather's crap. If you're properly dressed, there's no risk to running outside when it's cold and wet. Just be sure to change out of your wet gear as soon as you get home, before doing anything else, even stretching. And of course, just eat well. Lots of fresh veggies, minimal processed foods with added / refined sugars...

    I find the cold air gets on lungs and causes a sort of mild burn, it’s a weird sensation and i’m a bit worried as I had pneumonia three years ago. Great vid and thanks for all the helpful hints tips and advice 👍👍👍

      Recently heard someone with asthma who found the cold was effecting.
      They were told by their doctor to wear a face covering for the first 10 mins or so

      Trying to return to running (1/2 marathon Garmin programme with Jeff).
      Paused it for a month due to hard to get rid sinus infection & flu. Have really lost my fitness (was 7 weeks into it). Still coughing during running.

    Also don't avoid running in bad/cold weather, in my experience it helps you in the long run building strength/immunity. Just take care if you are sleep deprived, the body seems to have a harder time staying warm when there's lack of sleep.
    Coming from Iceland where most days are bad weather days for a big part of the year :)

    Every year when it starts getting cold and less sunshine, I start by making a batch of fire cider, full of warming herbs, it is intense but can prevent or shorten a cold and keep me exercising. Avoid sugar too.

    Our running club is doing an Advent challenge, 1 mile min for 24 days. I’ve been healthy all year and now I catch a cold and have a bit of a chesty cough. I’m still doing the challenge but I’m doing as little as possible and certainly not at effort. Should I not run? Possibly. But us runners can be a stubborn bunch.

    Commuting to work on any form of public transport during winter is always a big risk. Sat next to a violently coughing and sniveling bloke on the train about a week ago and hey presto! No interval and tempo session for me this week. Hopefully I'm recovered by my long run this weekend. Wouldn't like to miss that. It's a shame really, because I absolutely love running in the cold. Don't have any magical remedies though, just a lot of rest and hot tea. That green tea with ginger is great!

    Ran the Toronto Waterfront Marathon this year not knowing I had bronchitis! I came down with a cold a few days before the race and didn't think anything of it. On race day I woke up feeling perfectly fine, only to be struggling by mile 4 and by mile 7 I couldn't breathe properly. It got to the point I couldn't even run a tenth of a mile before struggling to breathe. I ended up cutting the course short at mile 23 but darn right I kept walking around the post race party until my watch said 26.2! Lesson learned though....don't run with bronchitis! It was six weeks ago and I'm still not 100% and have to be on two inhalers.

    If you are marathon training and you get really sick, I mean for two weeks or more what do you do? Is it better to modify, pick up where you left off, or start over? Sport for long question.

      Tricky one to answer without all the details, but broadly you should modify initially, listening to your body (maybe monitoring HR if you use that normally) and making sure you're fully recovered before ramping up to where you were previously.

    I fell I'll after a long run on Sunday. Two weeks prior to that I had been I'll work a cold. This week I have a half marathon coming up and in one month my first marathon. Today the arches and pains have mainly gone but the cough and running nose are still there. Would it be wise to miss the half marathon this Sunday?

      Hi Simon, sounds a bit rough! We’re not medical professionals, so would struggle to give advice, but if in doubt, and with your first marathon in a month, it might be safest to rest up and make sure you’re fully recovered.

    I've gotten back into running. Even tho I've only been at it 6 weeks, i didn't catch everyone's cold and flues that's been going around for the last month. Tho....i did catch my boyfriends cold but i only had it a couple days and it was very few symptoms. He got it really bad for weeks and lots of congestion a a lot of symptoms. Running 3-5 days a week now makes me feel invincible! Totally worth it!

    Last Friday woke from a restless night, shivery and skin felt pin prickly and generally felt weak all over. Knocked running on the head till today where I feel I’d like to do a run on the treadmill at an easy pace. No races coming up so not too concerned about loosing too much pace.

    I always thought it would not be so bad with a run close after a cold. But after doing that late September this year I was hospitalized for a couple of days and a complete training ban for a couple of months due to heart sack inflammation.
    I still haven’t gotten an ok start training from my doctors....

    I ran after recovering from cold and sore throat, after 3kms it was difficult to breathe. , any suggestions on recovery to get back to normal ? I am training for half marathon btw

    I used to go for a run even if i had a runny nose. Ended up with a clear nose after a while. Flipside effect though when down with fever/flu, aggravates the sickness.

    Great vid, although there was a few concerns, firstly gingerol is not what makes chillies spicy, thats capsaicin. Secondly, you can't just make a passing comment that carbs stabilise your blood sugar levels, especially when carbs are the main cause of fluctuations in blood sugar, particularly alarming when combined with an image of someone chowing down on crap like tortilla chips, what carbs, how much and when make the difference.

    so for me when i feel sick if its really bad; I stay at home and that's what Netflix is for. If its not bad well I run till it gets bad enough to stop followed just moving my body for about 4 miles, maybe its just from an early age I got into the habit of forcing my body to work.
    Pain happens but suffering is a choice

    Runing with a cold is a no no for me. Being asthmatic it screws me up. Running post migraine is hard too.

    oh oh... moment 7:27 - doggo ran past and didn't get loves. Though, he/she was on a mission. Back to the real thing... Thank you for this as I have really been wondering what I should do if I happen to get a cold. Live in the frozen tundra of WI US with -30c wind chill (dreadmill life and gym germs).

    I had a cold now its a hacking cough already missed 3 days of running, and when I get a cough it takes 2-3 weeks to disappear ☹. My training plan was due to start next Monday, have been doing good base building making sure I can hit MP in Long runs now am sad that all thats going to go back to square one 😥

    I've been taking extra vitamin D for some time because it also helps your mood and immunity (if you live further north than Birmingham you cannot get enough from sunlight in the winter). I've now moved onto vitabiotics since they put some in my GNR goody bag. Think it's about a year since I last had a cold.

      I might try taking some vitamin D as I live near Manchester. The winter months never used to bother me when I was young but now from October onwards I can’t stand the constant gloom and long for lighter evenings and spring

    Plenty of quality sleep, I find that slightly increasing calories works for me too, as well as drinking plenty of liquids, keep on fresh fruits and nuts and seeds, for the natural minerals and homemade chicken broth, made simply of boiling a roasted chicken carcass for a few hours

    1:51 Gingerol in neither in black pepper nor is it in chili peppers! The spiciness in "chilly's" mainly comes from capsaicinoids and spiciness from black/ white pepper comes from Piperine-alkaloids!

    Hey The Running Channel some more info for you and the runners.
    Take an inch piece of peeled ginger place in a mug and a slice of lemon. Top with hot water and drink. Just keep topping up all day and then discard at the end of the day. Can be drunk hot or cold so you could make a lot up. Lemon takes the edge of the ginger if you’re not a massive fan. Ginger is antibacterial helps clean the blood and boosts the immune system. Start drinking every day from end of Oct onwards and will help reduce illness.
    Magnesium is brilliant for the 💓 but taken at night helps to reduce cortisol levels and aids to getting a good nights sleep. There are many forms of magnesium I take Magnesium Citrate 200mg a day from a well known high street health store. Some magnesium forms may give you GI issues 💩 but Magnesium Citrate is normally ok for most people. Winner all around on that one 👊

      Unless you're medically qualified I wouldn't suggest people taking magnesium. I know lots of people are low in magnesium but it's bad for people with kidney problems and can make them worse

    I would say that no amount of supplementation will affect the course of infection whatsoever since immunity is adversely affected by the intake of excessive quantities of calcium carbonate in solution in drinking water. (Calcium ion channel impairment)
    Water from the tap should not test as an electrolyte, or any drinking water for that matter, especially if it contains excessive quantities of calcium carbonate. Filter your water. That includes water used to make coffee or tea. If you really want to ‘feel better’ supplement with bile salts(active ingredient: disodium calcium Note - calcium - don’t over-supplement)
    Bear in mind that the body replaces cells over a lengthy period, for example, blood is almost entirely replaced over six weeks, so it might take this long before a notable metabolic change is established. Hydration with filtered water will also give rise to plenty of bladder, depending on whether you’ve never tried to filter out calcium carbonate ever before.

    Great video, but i disagree on one point. "Carbing up" will NOT help balance blood sugars. It has the potential to have the opposite effect! Instead, choose the right kind of carbs in your diet. Instead of simple carbs, choose complex carbs; e.g. Wholemeal bread instead of white bread, and eating a higher fibre diet will keep blood sugars on a more even keel.

    Many years ago, I ran a solo half marathon. When I was about halfway, I got hit by a car and landed on top of the hood. After I talked to the guy, I ran the rest of the half marathon. It was only when I came home and a few hours later, that I noticed how my back hurt.

    Carbohydrate does NOT stabilise blood glucose levels, it increases them. It's the type of carbs you choose that makes the difference. Higher fibre and more complex carbs mean a slower steadier rise, which is much healthier for our bodies than the rapid rise in glucose levels caused by simple carbs.

    nothing can stop you getting a cold if you have a child in nursery!!! lol. I eat berries virtually every day, take vitamin c with zinc every day and I don't drink, but I've been off running for the last week thanks to 10 month old catching something and sneezing in my face regularly lol :-) Oh also had the flu jab.

    The biggest single change I made was to take a vitamin C 1000mg supplement with zinc as a result of the advice in The Nutrition Bible. It doesn't stop you getting a cold but I reckon the symptoms are less severe and it clears up much quicker. As someone who has previously suffered from colds every year I have definitely noticed a difference. As for running with a cold - my rule is if it's on your chest, don't run. If it's only in your head then go for it.

      ​@@manfromnantucket9544 No i mean voluntarily influencing my immune system to reduce inflammation via breathing techniques in line with the research done with Kox et al (2014).
      Unfortunately living in Australia means that my cold showers are only slightly steamy :D, not quite enough to induce hypothermia (although i'm devising methods now to introduce new ways of exposing myself to cold, ice baths etc) After a year of practising I've managed to severely reduce my cold symptoms and get more running/living/whatever in as a result :D

      I feel you! I have been sick today and yesterday and I have a state 800m heat tomorrow. I think I am passed the peak of my cold and I am praying I will be better when I wake up tomorrow. If I was well, I know I could make the final (which is in 3 days) and likely even progress to nationals. I might even make the final as I am now, but I don’t want to run and then be sick for longer and not be able to run the final anyway. I guess I’ll have to see how I am tomorrow.

    We often hear people talking about this & that vitamin & mineral etc etc so why not find a really top grade multivitamin & mineral supplement & don't forget about another very powerful substance for the immune system...garlic & as for running or training with a cold remember that your body is fighting to recover so just train very lightly, listen to your body & don't exert too much until recovered eh.

    Avoiding bugs can be impossible but we can help ourselves. Washing your hands might seem basic but some people don’t.
    Getting flu jab is something we all should do. I’m paranoid when it comes to germs but we can only do so much.

    I would say that you should NOT run with a cold. I did a couple of years ago and I coughed so hard that I actually broke a rib. It took me 3 months to recover from that one.

    Anna. Carbs are bad, they do not stabilize your sugar they just increase it.
    For 12 month I have been keto. I have not eaten any carbs foods at all in this time. I run up to half marathon always fully fasted (omad) I only eat in the evening. My glucose levels are always high after a run even a HM because of gluconeogenesis.
    Being fat adapted frees you so up.
    As a bonus I don’t have to dump all the fibre before a race (or during). I also at my fill of cream butter eggs steak bacon etc and for the first time in 40 years I have a BMI under 25
    My 5k 10k and HM times from the last 12 months are 23:33 49:50 1:56 my fastest ever times at 61
    (I started running at 54)
    Worth a try?

      Carbs are NOT bad. Can we stop with that please. Refined carbs are bad but carbs found in veggies and fruits and whole grains are actually really good for you. Being fat adapted isn't natural and goes against the very design of your body function and puts extra stress on your liver and kidneys because the only source of fuel that your body ( muscles and organs ) use is glucose so why make it harder ? Just eat good healthy food from all groups and use common sense instead of following fad diets. Oh and being lean and running fast doesn't mean you're healthy. Just give your body what it needs. Have your liver kidneys and cholesterol levels checked in 10 years time and you'll see.

      You are wrong! Do your research. Muscles and organs Do NOT need glucose. They can run on Ketones... The only organ that needs glucose is the brain and it needs around 25% (the rest runs on ketones and even thrives on it) . The tiny amount the body can make up from either stored fat and excess protein (no that doesn't mean you loose all your muscle).
      Even for people not in ketosis, it is much better to get rid of starchy carbs and fructose from fruits because inflammation is induced by high amounts of glucose. Carbs, especially when snacked on contantly do DESTABILIZE your bloodsugar and make you insulin resistend long term. You can get all your vitamins and minerals and antioxidants from vegetables, meat, eggs and few nuts and berries. The liver and kidneys aren't stressed under ketosis. They work more efficiantly.
      I'm 2 years without carbs and in the best health and shape I have ever been. My cholesterol and LDL are high but thats a good thing on Keto because you mobilize and use your stored fats as energy. The particle size is what matters and mine are super, as expected on a ketogenic diet.
      I hope people aren't mislead by the previous comment. Do you research guys.

      If Only Ketones are the best fuel for your body. carbs are toxic and refined or not have caused the obesity epidemic in the western world. My blood levels are good. Blood pressure in the middle of optimum (off meds) now pre diabetic (off meds) no longer obese I have unlimited energy and I’m no longer looking for meal times. I run half marathons with no “crash” while carbalolics are downing sickly gels. This years I have run over 700 miles all fasted
      It’s not a diet it’s a life style. I no longer count calories and have lost masses of fat without muscle loss of strength. Over 24 month now low carb and as a bonus I no longer have acid reflux, IBS, hayfever, raised blood pressure. My doctor is amazed at the transformation.
      Keto is demonised because big corporations can’t make massive profits from it. Its growing because it works. It is so good I have now gone full Carnivore no carbs no fibre no seed oils no fruit NO processed food and I feel even better. Carbs are not an essential nutrient your body makes what it needs from saturated fat.
      I will never change. Just try it. #yes2meat

Carbs that are in fruits vegetables and whole grains are not refined nor toxic ! you're the kind of people who use the word carbs for refined carbs only. When i eat a tomato i eat carbs. When i eat a banana i eat carbs. People especially in America need educating about carbs. I stay away from refined carbs but have been eating healthy food my whole life. I'm in really good health and if people change their diet that means that they've been eating the wrong foods in the first place. I've never been on a diet because i've always been fed the right foods as a child and still eat the same foods now and have taught my kids the same. It's all about educating. My kids know what's good and not. If you eat wholesome fresh foods you wouldn't get obese and have to change your diet at some point in your life. Merry xmas

When humans evolved carbs were scarce a few unsweet berries and maybe a few tubers so eating more than I minimum amount of carbs raises your insulin levels which is a fat storage hormone. Over time these insulin spikes will cause insulin resistant which is then on the path to diabetes and other metabolic diseases.
      Modern fruit has been bred to be unnaturally massively sweet, modern vegetables are now carb loaded all of which has promoted the obesity epidemic in the western world.
      Pasture raised meat including organ meats contain all the bio available vitamins and nutrients for human health. Whereas vegetables mainly contain more bio unavailable vitamins or they are in such low quantities you would have to eat a mountain of food to obtain them.

    I dont get how people get colds so easily after not drying your self after bathing.. Right after i bathe, i go out, i dont use a towel or hair dryer and put my clothes on right away. And i never get a cold, im pretty lucky-
