Exercise is fantasticfor us. It has a number of benefits, including improving the performance of our immune system. Moderate exercise is believed to stimulate the production of a type of white blood cell known as Th1 which the body uses to help kill off viruses and bacteria.
However, as we begin to push our training harder and increase the amount of stress and fatigue upon our bodies we often see our immune system take a sharp turn in the opposite direction, and therefore putting ourselves at a higher risk of infection. Unfortunately, I have just been fighting an extremely tough bout of man flu, so it feels like a good time to discuss if you should be training when you’re ill!
When most people get sick they grab some blankets, turn on the TV and curl up on the couch. But, triathletes aren’t like most people! Athletes are determined not to miss a single day of training, even if they have a cold or the flu.
Is this a good idea? Or should you take it easy?

For real, I am sick, and was preparing for a workout, but wondering if I should go or not 😂😂😂 Perfect timing guys
Even this video is 5 years, it was really well explained and well done.👍
The point that you will not make progress if you training when you are sick was a good reminder.
Literally watching this blowing my nose constantly after having had 3 days off training to recover! Hoping tomorrow I might feel well enough to get to training...
I've been sick for about two weeks with the flu, I'm going to do a few sets of weights and some squats two or three times a day at home to see how my chest and cough responds. I definitely don't want to end up sick again. I'm okay with taking it slow.
Can we get a review of the dog? Seems like a really great piece of kit
Your advice to take an extra day off really helped me with my decision, thank you!
That stained glass door you walk out of at 00:30 is just stunning! Sorry, I know that isn't the topic of the video, but I notice such things.
Thanks for the video. Having to work is probably more stressful than some Z1-2 training.
Thanks, quite clear!
Perfect timing ! great advice ..cheers Mark🚵👍
I watch this video whenever I am starting to feel ill or am already sick and it always makes me feel good about resting. Thank you so much for making this video!!
You got a new subscribe, just what I needed cause I was about to train
As others have said, the timing of this couldn't have been better - went out for a 15 mile run, felt truly truly dreadful after 5 so called it a day. Was beating myself up the whole way home until I got back and watched this. Thanks, Mark!
I’m sick all over. My whole body hurts and aches. I will sleep it off and hope for a better tomorrow. Thank you for reminding us to fully rest.
That`s some Good advice right their
Great timing. I just came down with a cold on Monday. I still exercised, but took it easy on Tues & Wed. Exercising always helps ease my symptoms for a few hours and feels like it helps me get better faster. Just have to ensure I don’t overdo it which will put too much stress on my body and make it worse. For something minor like a head cold, continued exercise is fine just not at the highest intensities. A flu or anything worse that involves a fever or anything in your chest should involve some time off.
No way, I'm sick right now and frustrated af that I can't go for a run, then I see you uploaded this video :O
Going to watch it right now, I hope you'll be giving me good news!
Dang :S Guess I'll just feel antsy all day
Brilliant video, very topical for me as have had a sore throat, cough and chest infection for nearly 3 weeks... been off work and had total rest...hate it but its the only way. Back to square one for my training then?!
Great video.
Good advice.
I always did this and it really worked for me.
Just to be sure i came on youtube to check r there people like me around there..
About to hit hard workout tomorrow and still ill, thanks for advice 👍
Great video
Well timed ... been down for two weeks with a chest infection since a half marathon, still a little rattly, still on anti-biotics. Itchy feet wanted me out the door, going to wait a little longer.
Love the dog!
Thank you. I found this video very educational. It has helped not only with being sick and Training. Also pushing the body to its limit can weaken the immune stystem. It has cleared my confusion between the process of becoming super fit and illness. I recommend this video to anyone who is interested in fitness.
Yep.....totally agree with you 💯
Just wanted to speed the recovery ... Thanks for the video sir.
Thanks so much for this valuable content. I was gonna go run, but I've almost vomited and my joints ache, and you're the third person in a row who's told me neck down stay down, so I'm thinking about a nice breezy jaunt around the neighborhood?
A day or two ... xD Spoken like a true athlete!!
Hard training after flu (even mild) is not recommended. Men below 40 years can have heart inflammation without knowing. I played soccer and went to gym after mild flu and some months I had to recover my heart and body. My advice: restart gradually with easy workouts, walk or mild run
That dog looked well chilled.
Cute dog
That dog is gorg 😍
Hey mate how do you feel about a brisk walk instead of a run with below the neck??
I feel restless sitting at home especially in the morning because thats my running time!!
I have covid and tried training on the eliptical 30 minutes a few days ago, felt quickly out of breath and headache got worse. Yesterday i did full training ( at home), almost passed out when taking a shower aftetwards....
Thanks but I destroyed myself getting back too fast to swimming and running and lifting. I’m fkn destroyed after being healed. Guys take care for real
Hmmm... I was actually thinking of taking tomorrow off work because of illness - so now I'm second guessing my exercises for tomorrow too! Mine doesn't seem to be cold or flu though (too hot for that here in AUS), more possibly an allergy, and sinus problem causing headaches (so, all above the neck)... Still, not sure if this might be affecting my workouts, and whether I should just take it easy for a few days :/ It's race season here though... Agh..
is it okay to do moderate walking when there is chest congestion...i have like dry mucus...so if I do bit intense exercise then the body pains. please advise...
I have found that when I have a head cold, and then work out in brisk weather, it's a killer. My mucus production increases and my cold just gets worse. I avoid any hard cardio when I'm in this condition.
The dog!!!!
Tried to do chest/tris w a fever, didn't happen. This sux, i want to lift so bad.
Have ear infection but will take a walk. Very annoying. Love running. Oh well. I'd had done indoor run during a self solation order but I was sick next day. Dont know was it stress.
Can you do a Pumpkin carving video then Mark ??
Dude if you're sick you're sick, you don't want a cold turning into pneumonia. When I get sick I'm resting.
Would you rather lose a week from a cold or a month from pneumonia (not just training but work as well).
lexington476 couldn’t agree more
lexingt
True. I road last week and I knew I shouldn't have on that particular day. Now I'm coughing up crud an it'll take another week to get back at it. It was the first nice day of spring, and I couldn't say no to a short ride because it was so beautiful....lesson learned.
I’m feeling better by just listening to this video. Are you single?
So Mark, did you get a sick day from GTN or not 😅?
No, absolutely not 😄; at GCN and they are all serious all the time 🤓... Unless Mark has on his carbon disc wheel 😎.
I'm very sick. My immune system clunked. The doctor said to take the whole week off (or until my illness last). Really messed myself up.
I'm sick and my heartrate starts going wild when I just get up out of bed 😢
Few days off? Time to clean those shoes and the bikes!
Shoot... you convinced me
Such a comfy house.
Is it spelled comfy?
Skipped training today. Feeling bad tough
Didn’t skip training today, feeling bad : (
So Mark did you get ill on purpose for the video or is it just that you didn't prepare for the British weather after Kona?
How can I get one of those rad jackets
Soooo I have the actual flu, and most of my workouts left me sicker than when I started. Hoooooyyyyyy......
You feel sore even in Zone 2 training.
First?!
It makes sense but I'm just gonna ignore you for a bit and train anyways
Fuck yeah my first like ever
Too distracted by the cute dog to pay attention
Who else is watching this with COVID?
Haha "Man-Flu" We now it all ;)
This guy is very good looking 😍
Is Man FLU worst than Wonan Flu❓
no way was that man flu mark....you would be so close to death you wouldn't even watch gmbn
Flu shots, people.
Idiot
69
Ahh you live in bath i see
Pretty disrespectful Mark.
You have an expert in rest and recovery beside you in bed for much of the video, and not only do we not get to hear their opinion, but you cover over them with the links at the end!
sabre toothed platypus you’re right, he’s a very wise chap! I’m not sure I would ever get much done if I took his advice though 😛
Just get to the point jeez
Bro, you talk too much for an answer
