Reviewing TRADITIONAL BRITISH FOOD at a PIE, SAUSAGE AND MASH SHOP in LONDON!

- I've been recommended by one of my subscribers to try out Mothermash in Soho which is one London's most famous Pie, Sausage and Mash shops. Now, it's a bit different to the usual Pie and Mash shops as you have multiple choices on the type of filling that you have. Hope you enjoy the video.
Please don't forget to like and subscribe to the channel.

Chippolette 😂😂
Love thes videos. Please go and try Hawksmoor breakfast
Thank you. They don’t serve the breakfast anymore though!
@@GaryEats oh noooooo. I didn't no that. It was amazing. Have you been to Dom's subs
Funny 🙂
if this video had been ½ as long, I'd have given it a perfect 10/10...
Was in London yesterday and went to this restaurant on viewing this video, had the beef pie, mash and gravy, really enjoyed it, plus the waiters were so friendly
Fantastic to hear and thank you for letting me know
Extremely fair score Gary. That plate did look good if a tad sparse.
Thank you Mary and I agree.
That did look scrummy..... when I was a kid, there used to be a sausage shop in "Soufend on Sea. ".... Oh my, the sausage, mash, and onions were.....😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋 . So much of my youth has gone, sadly, so thanks for bringing back some lovely memories of my childhood in East London.
Hope you enjoyed it mate 👍🏼 thanks for your comments as always!
With rate my takeaway , the best 2 on UA-cam, only just started watching this guy, and cant stop, excellent venues and honest reviews
Thank you so much Karl.
Rate is great. I hope Gary continues to keep it real. I humbly suggest Bald Foodie Guy too.
Been there, I had the medley of 3 sausages. Excellent and really enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it Steve!
So many great eating places around. Your scoring seemed very fair, and it looked great. Another very good video.
Thanks so much!
Friends, kindly leave a like for Gary after watching. He's doing an amazing job so let's try and get this channel reaching far and wide...
Thank you so much Seb.
100%
My pleasure Gary...
I agree with you. Great channel ✅👌👌
Agreed - my new best channel find of the month !
Had one of the pies here on a recent trip to London and can confirm they are top notch too. More filling than the sausages and felt I was going to burst but so tasty that I had to keep going and finish it. £14 well spent.
Great to hear David!
I'm relatively new to your channel but really enjoying some of your older reviews. Memo to self 'stop watching late at night' starving now!
Thank you Pauline.
Hi Gary the sausage and mash looked real good 😀
Have just gotten into this channel and am immediately an addict.
Myself and partner watch and have organized two weekends around recommendations.
I have two tips: the culinary is Simpson's in Cornhill. The second is brand related. Gary's Eats should have it's own range of merchandise with 'Let's Give it a Go' as tagline
Ah Gail, that's wonderful to hear. Thank you!! I have Merchandise Gail, please check the description of my videos or visit www.garyeats.com
Yummy 😋 A wonderful review Gary should of had an extra sausage! 😀 ❤🎉
It was
Looks like there's vegan and vegetarian options. I love that you can customise your order. I wish more places offered this! Good price for London. I love it when you show the menu so we can see what else is on offer. Also, shoutout to the cameraman for his good work.
Definitely lots of options Siobhan and this tasted really good and I’ll tell the cameraman you said hello 🙋♂️
I must admit, I would have gone for the Colcannon, 'cos that's what my Irish Dad loved, & he got us loving it, too.
But, then, that's actually just Champ, with cabbage and chopped bacon added, so the best of both! Lol
It would have been nice to see what choices of Pie they had there, too, though.
I said Liqueur when you mentioned the gravies but, having seen that onion gravy, I'd try that, for sure! Lol
I'd give your meal a 6.5/10!
Thank you very much as always for watching and commenting
That looked a very tasty treat, hard to beat sausage and mash, especially champ mash. Incidentally in the Daily Mail today they reviewed " The most expensive fish and chips in the UK " It made Heston Blumenthal look like the bargain of the year.
Bloody hell! Where was it? Might have to try 😂 thanks for watching mate!
@@GaryEats
Harrods it a Tom kerridge, £120 for fish and chips x2
Plus a hot roll and a cup of tea. It consisted of 8 chunky chips and a piece of fish, non crispy. That’s a no from me.
Holy Mary, mother of Joseph!!!!
That's your Irish coming out there Gary😂😂 I know, this Scot lives in the Republic of Ireland.
go on gary give it a go😄yummy mash and gravy
Thanks Mary. IT was delicious!
Hi mate big Jimmy Allen again, me n my mrs live in Rayleigh Essex and highly recommend a place in battlesbridge called the hawk!!! It’s incredible food mate so if your coming to Essex give it a go!!! Love your videos pal especially in London 👍🏼👍🏼
Hello Jimmy. Looks a lovely pub mate, I can definitely do that for you soon. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful comfort food …looked delicious
Thank you 😋
Gary and lovely Cameraman ❤️🧡💛💚💙🩵💜💖🥰 Always lovely to see you both enjoying your meal. Thanks Frank for the suggestion. Bangers, mash, and onion gravy are champion warmth. Agree, it needed a bit more mash and a sausage to be hearty.. but you enjoyed yourselves, and thatz all that matters!❤❤😊 Thank you both for sharing your wonderful and delicious experiences with us.
Thanks so much Mona. The cameraman says hello and thanks for always looking out for him!
Wow mash gravy and a pair of hotdogs! what culinary sophistication incredible that's just wild!! ba ha ha ha
Thanks Gary, try Becks off Red Lion Street, Holborn!👍
Sounds good Martin. Is that the Cafe?
@@GaryEats Gary its a cafe/restaurant. Only been there once. Excellent breakfasts. Taxi drivers use it, so that's a good sign!👍
Thanks Martin.
That made my mouth water, Gary, I love mash!
I know you have been asking for recommendations but that means you are pretty much going to end up at all the great places. I think it would be best if you choose as that is part of your channel's appeal😊.
Glad you liked it Sheila. Thank you for your kind comments, I will definitely go to a few places that I walk into but I also would love to try some places that you all love. Have a good weekend!
Gary , one of the few food reviewers who actually bothers too read the comments and reply’s , top man Gary 👍
Of course mate. Without you and my other viewers, this wouldn't work. The least I could do is take the time out to reply to those who watch my videos. Thank you as always.
When I went there in November I had the steak and stout ale pie, farmers Gravey and horseradish mash. It was superb.! With the mash it was normal mash with a healthy portion of horseradish I've the side of it so you could make your own mix, I liked it like that so you could have some plain and some with the horseradish.
Shame you didn't try a pie too while you were there, you might have increased your score to a 9.
I do agree though, the mag could have been a little larger but the whole meal did fill me up. Very tasty food..
Another great review Gary. 👍👍👍
Thanks my friend
I'm Irish from Belfast and have never heard of cheese in champ.
We had it on Thursdays, the day before payday, a big plate of mash with scallions and the milk they were poached in.
A well is made in the mash and filled with butter and you use a spoon to take champ from the bottom and dip it in the butter.
Gorgeous.
Ah that's making my mouth water just thinking about it. Lovely stuff mate.
Champ makes the meal complete. I agree with your ranking of the meal.
@@ThanhBenMansour
I gave it a thumbs up because it introduces people to champ.
Cheese and no well of melted butter, that's not champ but at least they've learnt the name.
inside mother mash looks like a modern version of the pie and mash shop i went to in Bethnal Green 30 years ago. Love it
I did really enjoy this one
I do like mother mash ,I use the one in carnaby street and always double up on the pies very good✌️
Thanks for watching!
Sausage and mash with onion gravy some cabbage too, there is my tes sorted cheers fot that Gary!!
You're welcome!!
All I can say is YUM, I am really hanging now for sausages, mash & gravy. You picked the best gravy. Onions go so well with sausages.
I have a suggestion for you Gaz
Bentleys for fish & chips, it looks like a great meal and the chef seems very humble and present xx
This was very good, but it was a bit pricey, Nicole xx
What a great looking dish, glad you enjoyed it.
It was!
The food looks lush! Dan and I might have to try that place on one of our trips into Covent Garden (an excuse for me to buy chocolate from Neuhaus). Incidentally, there's a lovely pie n mash shop on Rochester High Street that's worth a visit! 😺
Thank you very much for the information and this is definitely worth a visit
@@GaryEats last time we tried to visit, at lunchtime one Saturday recently, no seats were available so it is popular. The previous time, on Friday 21 June we had no problem despite a steady flow of hungry diners. They had run out of stewed eels but the pies, mash and liquor were good quality and very tasty and the shop was spotless.
Another great review and credit to your camera person, that meal looks lovely but need something to mop the gravy up 😂
😁 I will pass on the kind words.
I thought you got the score here bang on. What a cracking place for good, honest and simple grub.
yes, potato was a bit small, like you I'd have fancied an extra sausage or if not then I'd like a pie with it too. Shame mushy peas didn't look like they were available because adding same would be awesome. Being a complete pig I'd like some bread and butter too to make a sausage sandwich to dab same in whatever i wanted.
Yes, I'd willingly scoff my way through the whole menu.
Thank you Roger Regis was very good and value so I’d definitely return 👍
I miss the old pie and mash shop just off of East Ham High Street. Used to go there on Saturdays when the Hammers were playing at home.
What was it called mate?
do check out Castles Pie and Mash shop in Camden, London. Traditional. been going there for years. bloody marvellous.
I will do thank you
That meal looked delicious Gary. Perhaps not enough mash but otherwise perfect. Glad you enjoyed. We all enjoyed as well. Many thanks for sharing your experience with us 👍👍👍
I agree Andreas. It needed more mash and another sausage for a higher mark.
Another great review Gary, guess what I'm having for dinner tonight 😀
Hope you enjoy your bangers and mash tonight mate. Enjoy! Thanks.
You should get to The Quality Cup House in Farringdon. Worth it for the corned beef hash alone.
Wow love it I’ll take a look
I wanted to go to this place anyway but after Gary's review it's a must. Going over in a couple weeks. See you all at Mother Mash.
hard to find this food in The Netherlands, just like an English Breakfast... live in the rural Northern provine.. had English breakfast once, in Zakyntos... loved it..
It's excellent I must say
Gary. Went there had the Irish mash and Cumberland sausages. I agree. More mash an another sausage for the price, but otherwise I agree with you really lovely traditional food.
I had the steak and stout pie too and it is to die for!!😊
Glad you enjoyed it Charlie!
Gary, here in the states, you know across the pond we would need some nice warm bread to soak up all the drippings and gravy. If you had bread, you could get extra gravy. That way when you come to visit us you would fit right in. Love the videos Gary, you are the best.
Thank you so much!
Not been to Covent Garden since before covid.
That looked delicious. There is a nice pie and mash
In Greenwich just at the entrance of the market.
The prices are very reasonable. Think I might find
the one you are in.😊
Sounds great Brenda. Is it Goddards? I've already reviewed it!
@@GaryEats Yes ,Goddards, not as posh as Covent
Garden but good value .Another of our Greenwich
favourites is The Old Brewery, also want to try JACK the
Chipper in Creek Road Greewich. So many places, so
little time.
Morning Gary meal looked pretty good but I don't like so much gravy so too much for me but thats my choose. Was it hot? Good price seeing you were in Soho. Glad you enjoyed the meal.
Yes it was. Piping hot!
Another wonderful review Gary. I was worried you'd mark it up, as for me it just wasn't substantial enough, but as always you'd allowed for this and your scoring was perfect (8.5). I dont get why restaurants cant just add a bit more potato.. it costs them so little. Or even a slice of bread on the side. A brilliant review as always.
I really agree with you Stephanie. I just feel the portion sizes everywhere these days is so poor. Thanks for watching!
They want you to be hungry so you buy another course. I often take a slice of quality wholemeal to top up.
£13 in central London is very cheap
@@abbyhansen9874 True, as C. London is now Rip-off Central. Wasn't always like that. There were once loads of long-established cheap eateries - workers' cafes, bistros and chop houses in Soho and further abroad, most now disappeared.
Geat recommendation Frank. Brutal rating Gary.😮. I rated a 9, yet I didn't get to ear it 😢. Truly enjoyable channel. Thank you and Blessings from Texas,USA. 👍😊❤
No problem!
Great vlog Gary and Mr Cameraman.
Sometimes its nice to have simple comfort food, and this was that with a twist, as the mash with cheese and onion was a great idea and one i shall be trying.
Clearly the sausages were top quality, just a shame like you said Gary that there was not a few more onions in the Gravy, there a cheap filler and can make or brake a dish.
Score wise i think you were bang on the money, and this is certainly a place i would go to,
Chris.
Thank you Chris and I'm inclined to agree, the portion was not great. Enjoy your weekend mate.
Old Chang Kee which is just down the road from there is one of my favourites.
Thanks mate.
another enjoyable great review well done Gary.
Thank you :)
Hi Gary. Living in SE London, I have been past that place a few times. Looks great. Again, your presentation style is refreshingly cheerful. Take care
Many thanks David. Not too far from me, have a good one. Thanks for watching!
I don’t know if it was the perspective but those bangers looked massive 😂
They were pretty big!
I noticed over your left shoulder JPC (Jamaican Patty Co.). It's my go to at Liverpool Street, the patties are great and the goat curry with rice and peas is to die for. Must try Mothermash, as both my wife and I love comfort food.
Might have to give that a go.
I ate here once every week I was in London. Fair prices for the area and tasted absolutely hearty.
Then went just opposite to Espresso Room and washed it down with a black coffee. Sadly that's now relocated.
That’s great to hear, and that’s also not good to hear
Hi Gary, great review. I would really like to try this place next time I’m in the area. It looks close to Carnaby Street? If it is you must try Dishoom Indian restaurant there. The breakfast naans are fantastic!
Thank you Michael. I will definitely give Dishoom a go, I've heard rave reviews.
I have been to the Mother Mash of Carnaby St London. I had Kate and Sidney Pie with Colcannon mash, onion gravy. I had one of their desserts of Ginger Bread Pudding. If you do come have one of their pies. I thoroughly enjoyed them .
It was very nice when I went
Wonderful dinner last night at Mother Mash Covent Garden. Thank you, Gary, as your reviews ate not only entertaining but also very useful.
Brilliant to hear :)
I would love this restaurant! I am a huge fan of mashed potatoes. I have never had sausages with mashed potatoes and gravy but I'm sure I would enjoy the meal. Thanks, Gary! 🇺🇸❤️🇬🇧
Thank you very much as always ❤️🇺🇸
Try WHISTLESTOP in Raynes Park - good fish n chips and they do pineapple fritters!!! Great video as usual
That was a fair score and boy did it look yummy .
Agreed. Have a good weekend!
That looked a cracking meal like you said Gary if it was in another part of the uk I’d be saying expensive but in the heart of london tourist area it’s not bad at all great video once again 👍
Thanks Richard :)
Thank you for the restaurant find Gary (and Frank). Another added to my visit list. Woul like a portion on onions in there.
For recommendations. I think Honest Burger could be part of a trio of London burger restaurants to compare as new burger style seems to be a popular growth in the capital.
You're more than welcome. Yes, I'm a big fan of Honest Burger
That looks delicious,I know what I’m having for dinner tonight.🤗
Was very nice. Enjoy!
Hi Gary
Love your show.Just wondering if you travel to all parts of the UK
We tried to visit all areas of the UK Bill
Good review, keep up the good work.Wow sausage need more caller , looked at the pan and run I guess
Thanks Neil. Have a cracking weekend mate.
Would like to see the pie next time. Thanks.
Next time!
another good video gary.more mash and one more sausage was a good call , the meal its self only looked like a snack meal .
Thanks Michael 👍
Gary you always make me merger hungere, that dinner looked so good.
Thank you my friend!
Another informative video, well filmed and narrated. Your score was fair - £13 for two sausages and a portion of potatoes? Perhaps it is Covent Garden and all the tourists from afar. Based on your other reviews I would head for a London railway station location for good food and a good deai.
All part of the great traditional British rip off.
Thank you Philip. Glad you enjoyed it, yes the portion was a bit of a letdown.
Or make it yourself for £3.
Do you know, that thought crossed my mind!@@jamesfahy2935
Thank you Gary! Good hunting in Yorkshire - I am looking forward to your videos. Philip@@GaryEats
That looked delicious- as usual got super hungry watching your video! Definitely would like to give that place a visit.
Excellent stuff Gary!
Now I've come over all peckish. I was introduced to bangers and mash many years ago in an episode of the BBC's "All Creatures Great and Small." Sadly, it's not something easily found here in the "colonies." Then, I was in the UK on a performing tour with an orchestra in the 1980s. I made it my mission to try bangers and mash at every possible opportunity. Finally, back in the USA, I found a butcher shop that made proper bangers, so I started serving it occasionally at my dinner table. I believe I'll go visit that butcher's shop this very day and enjoy the dish again this evening. Thank you. I've subscribed to your channel.
Great stuff. Appreciate it !
£13 is very good value for high quality food in an area like Covent Garden. Looks delicious as well
Glad you enjoyed my friend.
Always a pleasure watching your videos Gary 👍 honest and detailed reviews.
Thank you Matt. Glad you enjoyed it!
Don't know how I've never happened upon this place before so a big thank you for reviewing it and letting us know. I love veggie sausages, mash, peas and gravy so will definitely try and make it to one of the branches. Get some lovely winter comfort food in my system.
Already tried Bombay Delight in Wimbledon after you reviewed the restaurant which was a wonderful recommendation - (I was the dining companion that your viewer Staggercfc mentioned in his own review in the comments).
Lovely. hope you enjoy yourself. I'm really glad both you and Stagger enjoyed yourself. Bombay Delight is a lovely restaurant - did you also find it quite relaxing to dine in?
@@GaryEats Yes, it has a nice, calm ambience to it and there was no feeling of being rushed. The food was sublime and Stagger wasn't lying about those huge cocktails, haha. I may have underestimated their potency and almost tripped on a step on the way out as I was a little more tipsy than I should have been. Lesson learned! Will stick to fizzy water next time. 😅
That was a fair score. It looked lovely though, as you said, it needed a bit more mash, or that extra sausage.
Indeed.
Rating was about right , another dollop of Mash & Another Banger ,yes be Perfect helping
A Good GO Gary 👍
Thank you
Another cracking video. I would love to see your take on Rules in Covent Garden. I believe it is the oldest restaurant in London. It is quite touristy but such an interesting place to look around and the food is very good imo.
Thank you David. I've been recommended to try multiple times, lets see what I can do over Christmas!
Bangers and mash is my favourite comfort meal and must say that gravy looked perfect
A fair Appraisal, I agree a bit more mashed potato and another sausage won't break the bank and would then be value for money. Looked like a great quality meal, great watching as always Gary
Thank you John, completely agree with you. Have a good weekend :)
Another great video chap as always 👍👍 Mmmmm you can’t go wrong with “Bangers and Mash” lovely meal..looked lovely 👌
Thank you David. You can't, it's lovely comfort food.
I give this video 7 out of 10 - well done Gary
Thanks lol
@@GaryEats - I have been forwarding your reviews to friends - people really love your calm no frills approach - have a good weekend
Another great video Gary, thanks for sharing! Thanks Frank for the suggestion!
Any time Jerry.
Hi Gary when will you be coming over to northern ireland
I’m hoping to come and see you within the next two months
I was going to say, 13 quid for bangers and mash? But you said it first with your point at the end. Great review. All the best, Gary.
All the best
I've been here twice now since I saw your review Gary and really enjoyed the food on both occasions. Both times I had 3 sausages, cheesy mash and onion gravy. The food was very tasty indeed and price was fair enough for WC2. Hard to criticise the place but the portions could have been a bit bigger, my mash was delicious but there wasn't much of it. Potatoes are cheap! Anyway a good place and I will certainly return again soon.
Excellent to hear my friend. Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice one Gary, quite agree with the majority of comments seemed a tad expensive for the quantity of food but it did look very appetising and as usual a very honest review, you must go to a good gym as you do not show an abundance of excessive weight after all the reviews you bring us. Great work Gary looking forward to the next one, cheers mate.
I also agree mate, the portion size was lacking. Haha, I just don't eat very much when I'm not reviewing luckily! Glad you're liking the content Harold and hope you have a cracking weekend mate.
Lovely sausage and mash good fair score gary been in London not a bad price thanks for bringing us these videos
Thank you for watching Julie. Means a lot!
That looked spot on ,plain and simple , would i pay £13 for that ? yes i would . Shame i dont live in London anymore ,now living on the Kent coast and we have some great places to eat around here .Good review again Gary , and well done to Frank also .
Frank is the main man! Glad you liked it Lee.
Love watching the places you eat at and your relaxed style. In Covent Garden I went to Rules which I enjoyed. PJF lives in Sustralia
Thank you!! I really want to go to Rules.
Been there a few times and it’s brilliant
Glad you liked it and had a good experience as well.
Love your videos Gary. You really give a great prospective on us all.
Thank you TIm :)
Bangers 'n' mash with onion gravy is one of my faves.
Oh yes Tracey!
Bangers and mash with onion gravy, my favourite comfort food.
Very nice
I wish had gotten around to trying one of London's pie (or sausage) & mash shops but time didn't allow for it but thankyou for showing us the delights of London the way you are doing.
You're welcome Robert.
Double the subs from when I joined Gary, keep going bud, proper review of food we all love!
Thank you Jon. Much appreciated!
Good evening Gary, an old-fashioned meal😊 Served in a mock pie shop😮,which I'm not complaining about, the tiles are just right. Modern seating, not the bum numbing ones from the good old days 😂😂 My wife,an Irish lady ( forever a girl to me) said. The whole plate looked great,it made her both happy to see it so well presented, a tear for memories 😢❤. Now,have to agree that overall a small meal,And a top heavy price tag😮 Needed far more onions. Almost like French Onion Soup😊.Definitely a 3rd sausage. And a larger dollop of spuds 😊Maybe an Irish Mixed plate 😮 choose 3 or 4 types of mash.Chunks of soda bread, and 1/2pt of Guinness. As the wife says " A fine feed " Gary it's no surprise to see your numbers going up (nearly 8,000❤) A truthful down to earth reviewer. Bringing us a very good cross section of eateries. Many thanks ( to you both😂😂 you know who i mean) Cheers Allan&Family ❤😊
Completely agree with you Allan. I appreciate your comments and always very friendly assessment of the meal. Have a good weekend :)
Have to agree, could easily eat that twice. Nice choices available.
Yep. Needed more for the portion!
Mr Gary, I've noticed you're also a buffet kind of guy! If that's the case, then you must try a place called Royal Nawaab! It's next level. They have a restaurant on the ground floor open to the public, and the floors above are for private venues and functions. My sister had her wedding reception there, and I noticed the food was the same quality coming out of the same kitchen for everyone. So you won't fall short by going into the public space. It honestly is that good considering it's a buffet!
That's a lovely looking place my friend. I've already had a look online and it's somewhere I'd be tempted to try in the future. Thanks for watching!
Yh buddy I suggested this a few weeks ago. Best buffet I’ve seen in my life

My pleasure Mark. I will definitely be down to Cornwall at some point but it will probably be early next year!
Hi Gary
Proper food good Quality what more could you ask for.Do you ever get up to Tyneside?
I will be going up there in the next few months, Bill
Another great review, Gary. Thanks for that. I'm surprised a London paper hasn't snapped you up to write reviews for them. Keep up the good work.
