Reviewing the BEST PIE & MASH SHOP in LONDON! INCREDIBLE VALUE!

- Today, I take a trip to Poplar in East London to visit Maureen's, a lovely little pie and mash shop. Now, I've been to some pretty good Pie and Mash shops on my travels so far, can we get a new entry to the top currently held by Goddards?
Please don't forget to like and subscribe to the channel!
What I like about Gary is not just the videos, how he takes the time to reply to many comments. A personal touch like that. Cheers, Paul.
Totally agree. He's a proper bloke.
Agree
@@andrewroberts4736 what about macmaster? He also replys and likes all comments.
Gary is very good at replying at comments he is one of the good guys
Even though I agree, I'm sure he won't be replying to every comment when he hits 50k subs and 1k comments on every video, which will see a lot sooner that we think😮 😂😂
I've never given London pie and mash a second thought as the liquor puts me off as it's always too watery, and being a northern lad I'm a lover of thick gravy but seeing that luscious liquor my mouths watering.
And why no knife and why am upsidedown pie. I love these local traditional quirks. Thankyou for sharing Gary. And I can't get over the price, or the beautiful looking bagel.super, super cafe.
No problem mate, excellent value isn’t it? You can have it with gravy, just expect a lot of stick in these parts Paul 🤣 all the best mate.
Pies should be eaten upside down as the bottom is softer and easier to cut into ans the thicker crust flipped over absorbs the gravy
Amazing value. Great viewing as always.
Thank you mate!
I live in North Yorkshire ,not a pie ,mash or Salt beef outlet that I know off ,Tried doing my own ,it’s good but not a patch on that offering ,local Jewish food store in Leeds does ready brined to cook salt beef joint but it’s so exspensive ,probably cheaper to get a train to London and pursue it from there ,👍
Up in Yorkshire very soon mate. Next week to be exact. Thank you for watching!
Ahh, the spoon and fork. I understand Thai folks use those utensils for the majority of their meals.
The green liquor is usually made with the juice from cooking the eels
I’ve heard they don’t cook them with eel juice as much anymore
Now I know how to eat pie and mash!! Cheers. Not sure about the mash though, prefer mine mixed with cheddar cheese, milk, butter, chilli powder and cayenne pepper to give it a bit of flavour and volume. Super review though and nice to see your channel growing so quickly. Keep up the brilliant work 👍
Yes. The east enders will give you a bit of stick if you don't eat it with a spoon and fork.
Sounds like you prefered this place to Manzies and Arments. Please try Kellys in the Roman next as I would be interested to hear ur opinions on that one.
regards
I will do thank you, this was the best followed by Goddards in Greenwich
Great channel Gary. Keep up the good work 👌🏼
Thanks 👍
Been to Maureen's very good you should try B.J's Pie & Mash 330 Barking Rd, London E13 8HL
On the list. Thanks mate 👍🏼
You really enjoyed that didn't you Gary,lt did look tasty, never eaten that ,They dont sell that where lm from,
Loved it Christine!
I moved to the UK from the US 15 years ago and the first British cuisine I fell in love with was the good old pie. I'm partial to the steak or steak and kidney. I do like mine with chips but thanks to Gary, I will visit Maureen's and have it with mash... Thanks Gary!
Excellent to hear Seb. Go and give it a go and let me know what you think!
Thanks Shaw, will do.
Will do Gary, thanks.
I’m from South Africa where a pie can be a road stop or high class cuisine. It’s part of our blood. Looking very forward to trying out this pie, will take a tube there soon.
You don’t have a successful family business for 50 years without what you showed us Gary , great service, clean environment, wonderful food and awesome value, well done to the owners and thanks for another great video mate
Indeed. You're spot on!
There’s a reason Gary’s going stratospheric with subscribers it’s his honesty and that he’s not influenced by big names fancy prices or titles keep it up big Gaz your disrupting food reviews and reviewers in such a great way
Wow. Thank you mate, glad you're enjoying the videos!
Great!
Exactly Cookie. Gary's channel is a breath of fresh air. He reviews places across the price spectrum and rates them on their own terms - according to what we might reasonably expect from a certain kind of establishment. Of course a Michelin starred restaurant will have better ingredients, more attentive service, etc., than a greasy spoon, a chain pub or a pie and mash shop but he understands that they all have their role and judges them accordingly. I only hope he has an exercise bike, given all those fry ups and roasts he's getting through!
A nice, warming, honest to goodness meal that makes up for that McDonalds travesty the other day.
Yep! Never reviewing McDonald’s again!
Good Gary don't,
Chris.@@GaryEats
Yeah, I thought that!
Delighted to see Maureen’s still going strong. The food there has always been fantastic. I was born in the east end and unfortunately due to a mass exodus of locals (understandably) places like Maureen’s are now very rare. I wish them all the best and should make the effort to get down there and support them. In fact I will !
I might have to take a trip to Poplar and go to Maureens, all there is near me are kebab shops ( yuck)
It’s going very strong. Enjoy your visit!
Same. Also from the east end but became part of that exodus a few years ago. Nice that places like Maureen's and Pellicci's are still around to prove it hasn't all disappeared.
Don’t know if I’m one of the exodus as my family moved over 20 years ago but why? What wrong with poplar?
Why is there an (understandable?) exodus of locals? Not trying to be divisive, as a Scottish plonker I'm genuinely interested.
In this day and age its outstanding to see a small, local business doing so well with their traditional menu.
We should all be supporting companies like these, while enjoying their excellent food and cheap prices. Its a win win!
Indeed. You are spot on!
What I like about Gary he is honest and does a proper review unlike other channels. 👍
Thanks my friend! 👍
That looked proper food by proper cooks for proper people. Four round the telly here, four thumbs up. You certainly gave that one a go. Thanks for taking us along.😊
By ‘proper people’ do you mean skint? 😂
No, chief. Thinking of us political atheists who still know the value of a pound. 😊
Thank you kindly Jeff!
Wow Gary that looked fantastic, it makes me want to cry when i think back to our days in East Ham , where have those fantastic days gone remember so well when me and my wife used to take the kids to Roman road market every Saturday and never missed having pie and mash for lunch, when i look at the state of our country now I get very angry, it has been taken away from us😡, but watching your video Gary makes me smile remembering those wonderful days and the fantastic people, god bless those days🙌 , John
Thanks for the comment John this was simply outstanding value and quality 👍👍
Oh wow!!!! £9.70 what an absolute bargain, and delicious as well, your face says it all, you really enjoyed it so much. You are so good at this Gary, your programmes are great, and so enjoyable. I thought it would be a 10, and deservedly so.
Thanks so much my friend. It was a bargain and delicious all in one!
As always Gary, a real pleasure to watch. Cheers for mentioning the seasoning of the mash too! I brought that subject up last week and you were kind enough to respond.
You're fast becoming a bit of a legend! Keep up the great work and thank you so much for doing what you're doing.
No problem my friend, I always listen to advice or ways to improve the videos!
Thank you - far too kind mate. Thank you for watching!
The best pie Matt shop in London in the best pie and mash is a family room business plan family room business family room there for 50 years
Mate, that meal is amazing value and looked absolutely delicious! Great review of a dying London delicacy. As an aside, I was in Windsor yesterday and decided to to go next door to Slough Steakout ONLY on your recommendation. Gary, I couldn’t have been happier! I got exactly the same steak you had, and it was perfection. The staff were amazing and so helpful. I mentioned you and they all pulled up your channel on their phones! They remembered you and your cameraman. I think you’d get free food for life there, mate! They all love your channel and were gushing about how lovely you were. Absolutely brilliant to see your channel growing and the restaurants you visit genuinely love you. All the best, mate.
Amazing to hear that you also had a good experience of Steakout mate. The staff were lovely when I went and couldn’t be happier to be of service. Thank you for mentioning the videos and I’m glad they were full of praise.
All the best my friend - thanks for sharing this with me!
@@GaryEats ❤️
Amazing value, amazing food Gary. I do like some greens with pie and mash but that was adequate. The sandwich was to die for. Amazing prices.10/10 all day from me.🌹👍
Excellent to hear Dan!
That salt beef looked amazing!! My dad was from the east end of London and used to say that the pie, mash and liquer was a lovely meal, I have to say that here it looks really nice and I'm gunna have to try some when I'm down London next, he also liked the jellied eels but I'm not trying that! Thanks for this mate, I have no idea why you was in my recommendations but I'm glad this was! Cheers!! 👍 Ps meant to say that all of that food was less than a tenner?! Proper food for such a low cost, what's not to like and such a bargain!!
No problem. Glad I found yourself and you liked the video. Spot on! Thank you for watching!
Trivia Corner: One of Jack the Ripper's victims, Liz Stride, ran a coffee-shop with her husband in Chrisp Street, Poplar, during the 1860s. Great review, Gary, and the food looked wonderful; I really must visit Maureen's the next time I'm in the East End.
Wow. Nice info and thank you mate. Please do!
Definitely, you won't be disappointed. The salt beef bagel or sandwich is another level.
Liquor is traditionally made with juice from stewed eels.
Yep.
@@GaryEats My other favorite from the 1950s, stewed eels. There is a knack to eating. Suck the meat off the bone and remove the bone from mouth with one's fingers. Stewed eel is jellied eel heated up*. The jelly becomes the juice. Lovelly jubberly!
Food great, cafe lovely, the outside looks like Mogadishu unfortunately
Watching this video at lunch time here and my mouth is watering ! Pie & mash plus the salt beef bagel looked absolutely incredible ! The price is fantastically good especially for London ! A cheap quality lunch that the whole family can enjoy or tourists looking to watch their budget. 10/10 from me !
So good Robert. Happy you enjoyed this one and you’re right, the value is superb!
I’ve got to start with one word Gary, WOW!!! The pie and mash looked superb, as did the beef brisket. The price of the food was outrageously cheap. You can tell the quality is first class, judging by how many people came in. Thank you so much for sharing with us. That has made my evening 👍💎👍
Glad you enjoyed it Andreas and you enjoyed the upload. Onwards and Upwards!
What value! I regularly pay £8-9 quid for a salt beef sandwich around my way in Cockfosters! As usual great stuff Gary!
So good mate. It’s superb!
I always appreciate traditional shops with a good history that are there for the people and if you want to know if a business is for the people then have a look at the prices. So cheap really in today's Britain. Take note rip off businesses who aren't there for the people? Good review Gary as always
Spot on Gareth. Thank you for watching!
Excellent pie n' mash, I could tell by the sight of it. The liquor was nice and thick. I had my first circa 1954 at Manzes in Peckham, when I worked for Dad as Saturday boy. Sometimes I'd have the stewed eels, mash and liquor. The salt beef bagel looked delicious too, but I couldn't handle one of those too, at the same sitting! 10/10 moi aussie.
This was outstanding and fantastic quality. The best pie mashup I have visited.
Being London those prices are amazing. Like that owners rely on their rep and quality rather than ripping off tourists. Nice review Gary as always.
Yes, the whole London pricing winds me up something rotten🤣so a down to earth wholesome cafe with great food and equally great prices deserves success 👍
Agreed Mike. A wonderful place to eat!
Most local places outside of central London and the west end are reasonably price.
Looked superb. The value for money there seems outrageous. Great to see places like this doing well. Proper food, especially this time of year.
Absolutely. Cheers Matthew!
Love this channel, so nicely done and Gary so genuine and likeable
Thank you mate. Appreciate your nice comments!
One of your best reviews Gary. You got everything perfect and the food looked equally perfect. We’ve followed Maureen’s on FB and hope to visit - think you’ve started a new trend tho - salt beef Beigel now a must side dish for pie and mash 👍.
Wow, thank you Carol. They deserve big praise 👏🏼
I had never wanted traditional pie and mash was always put off by the liquor. but decided I needed to take the plunge and wow was surprised at how nice and fresh tasting it is. That meal looked amazing so generous with the salt beef.
I'm lucky, it was the first solid food I ate as a baby.. back in the 1960's 😅
Glad you’ve ended up having it Jason. It’s superb!
Gary, history on a plate ❤ As my memory serves, they also served eels as well.Never could get to grips with liquor, proper Parsley Sauce with Gammon all day long.Always thought liquor looked a bit swampy. But been around for donkey's years, so what do I know 😮 All the best Allan&Family
Absolutely Allan however a lot of places don’t serve it with eel juice anymore. All the best my friend 👍🏼
Hi Gary. I gave that a 10 like you. Where do you get that quality for that price? On another note, I've binged watched your entire catalogue over four evenings! I haven't done that for ANY UA-camr - nobody. The reason is simple. You are the best food reviewer on UA-cam. You have also mastered the video length and getting to the point straight away, with humorous and accurate reviews delivered with fairness and integrity. Your popularity is going to skyrocket off the dial. Absolutely top draw. Keep them coming. It must be satisfying that there are no other people reviewing establishments in the way you do. You've set the benchmark. No doubt about it.
Wow. David, I don't know what to say but thank you so much. I'm very grateful that you've spent time going through my videos to watch them (are you not bored of my face by now?) It means an awful lot that you think so highly of myself and the channel. Lost for words, thank you. All the best.
Watching Gary's reviews kickstart my appetite.
G'DAY! New to your channel regards from Australia.
Welcome! How’s the weather in Oz? (I’m jealous)
Wow Gary, what a deal. Always enjoy your honest reviews.
Thanks so much 👍
That meal looked great value for money, Gary! And just £1 for a cup of tea! Almost unheard of these days! Thanks for another great video!
More than welcome. Incredible value!
Excellent video Gary - Maureen's is one of the best, if not the best. They deliver UK-wide and it just so happens that I have a Maureen's pie in the oven warming up with spuds on the boil and the liquor warming through😍, and now I get to watch a video about 'Pie Central' itself😊.Great people and great value. I'll be down in London in a couple of weeks for another 'Pie and mash-athon', visiting as many pie houses as I can in 3 days ! If you want to try another great plate of pie and mash, try G Kellys on the Roman Road in Bow.
Thank you very much Ian. They're absolutely superb... I will try G Kelly's in the future!
Great review Gary .. Always good food in Maureen’s deserve that high score .
Makes me want to take the next plane from Stockholm to London for a traditional British meal! Fantastic value for the food also.
Leave the surströmming (?) At home though Tomas. Thanks 🙏👍
@@alex-E7WHU Surströmming is something they it in the north parts of Sweden, Norrland. Not in the civilised southern parts of the country. ;)
You should! Hello to Sweden 😊
@@GaryEats Hi Gary! Like your videos a lot!
Naturally I eat Surströmming from time to time (tastes a lot better then the smell you got when you open the can). It is however harder to find, because of to much "industrial fishing" with big ships, that leaves fewer Strömming (small Baltic herring) to the local fishermen in Northern Sweden, with smaller boats. A shame.
Thank you my friend :)
I love pie mash, its a shame its becoming a dying trade .
Indeed. It's lovely mate!
I regret not having Pie & Mash with its traditional liquor when i visited London, I will next time!
There’s always a next time 😊
I'm from Belgium and whilst wo do joke about the food in Britain, I can still recognize a lot of similarities, especially with the old style dishes.
This actually looks great, and really well priced I certainly didn't expect it to be in London.
I'd love to check it out next time I visit, but that may still be a while nowadays, needing an international passport and whatnot after brexit.
Anyway, I've watched quite a few of your videos Gary, you seem like a lovely person with an in depth review. I'm sure I'm not the only international viewer! I do have to ask, almost all your videos seem to be London focused, which I understand if you're from there. But have you considered visiting some other places? Maybe fairly close, like up north, or even Scottish stuff, would love to see you have haggis :D
Also, not sure if you do travel or not, but would love to watch a video about some international dishes too!
Have a good one Gary!
Of course. I’m planning to go to Yorkshire this week, I’ve been to the Cotswolds, York, Brighton, Birmingham and more so far but I will be going outside of London more for certain.
I love haggis so will be trying that when I go to Scotland!
Thanks for watching from Belgium and all the best.
Great to hear! I'll check out some of your non London videos.
I'll eagerly await the haggis review!
All the best!@@GaryEats
Lovely. As you said, Gary, outrageous value. Nice to know that such high standard, brilliant value trad pie and mash shops still exist in the East End.
This was outstanding in every way
Remember Gary, you only need the knife for self defence. A lot of these shops are in the less salubrious parts of the capital. Pocket the blade and have it to hand as you walk towards and away from the restaurant. You’ll only need it until safely back inside your vehicle.
By the way Gary my Mother-in-Law, used to make Broad Beans in Parsley sauce, I loved it so much that I still eat them to this day with fresh Parsley sauce!!
That is wonderful to hear, Jacqui 🌹
Cheers, Gary! Been making it a mission to try all the best pie & mash shops in the city, but still need to go to Maureen's and Manze's (your reviews helped push them higher up on the list). As an American, I haven't ever experienced liquor on my pies before, and have been a bit worried to go "full force." Glad to see Maureen's offers both liquor AND gravy. I try to get to London as often as I can, and finding your videos has been a real treat.
You're more than welcome my friend. Please do give them both a go as well as Goddards. In my opinion, they are the best!
Have you visited Harringtons in Tooting yet? Undoubtedly the best pie shop in London.
I have not but it’s not far!
Manzes in Walthamstow shut down...awful quality..no customers...it's now Japanese but kept old interior.
Watching this video, I have to ask myself, what is ‘good food’?
I mean there has to be somewhere in between this and the artsy fartsy michelin stuff!?
I think it’s all down to ‘rich’ / ‘money’, those people eating in those michelin places, actually believe they are eating the best food. In fairness sometimes it’s good, however most of the time it’s a gimmick, if you’re honest.
You either know, or you buy into the hype! Oh yes you will buy bigtime, if you believe in that michelin stuff, maybe it helps the economy grow slightly!
I do try to do all different price points and different style restaurants on this channel, regardless of the price points some are very good and some was very disappointing
Blimey Gary that was a lot of food. The pie and mash looks like proper winter comfort food. You won’t need to eat for a week after that lot 😂
Edit, up another 2 1/2 K subscribers too 👍🏼
Thank you Dan. It was a lot of food mate lol.
Best food review channel on UA-cam... Also ive never tried pie, mash and liquor... Always wanted too... Will have to take a trip to London soon as i only live 40 minutes down the road..
That is a very kind comment to make and really appreciated thank you
Excellent video Gary- Maureen’s is my favourite Pie and mash since i discovered it few years ago during the covid lockdown they were serving take away only . The staff are super nice , the food is the best and I love going back . Ten out of ten … you are spot on !
So good and I’m glad you go back and back. It’s excellent!
Great video Gary the food looks amazing, proper London food, good review as always .. I wish we had this food on the Canadian West Coast .. it’s so weird .. Canada … First off … lacks a good authentic Indian curry at a good price .. and … Second just simple cooked British food cooked the British way using British recipes is a fail .. Canadians do try bless them , they do try !!! 😂😂😂everything british here is just a cover version ☹️☹️☹️ it’s so crap .. 😂😂😂👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it James. Very nice!!
Gary,
Absolutely superb mate!
The Pie & mash looked so delicious, & the Salt beef incredible! ✅
Price for the London area, amazing! ✅
I think you showcased Maureen's Pie & Mash shop to perfection, spot on!
Cheers 🍻
Glad you enjoyed it Tel. Means a lot mate and thanks for your constant support!
I would love to see Gary also tuck into Stewed Eels and Mash at £6.30 - I think Jellied Eels is like Marmite (love it or hate it) - That Salt Beef is what I would go for its steaming...Such an improvement to Sid's Caff in Only Fools... LOL
I have already done that my friend. Check out my Goddards review.
Stewed eels are lovely. Although I’ve never had it with mash. I like my stewed eels plonked on top of my pie.
That looked exceptional Gary, simple food done very, very well. And that price, in London, incredible. Great review.
Hi Greeno. Hope you're doing well mate. Thank you very much - will catch up on your videos tomorrow.
I'm surprised you went to east London and never went to Kelly's in Roman Road that's is 100% the best and always has been. Just saying and last and not least your doing a great job with the reviews 👍🏻
That's fair enough. I can go there as well!
@GaryEats you will taste the difference my friend its the best out there
Thank you!
@GaryEats your more than welcome keep up the good work
I was in here last year.... One pie mash and liquor ... On its own im not a fan of the liquor... But mixed with the vinegar and the mince.. top drawer.
I got jellied eels too.... I gave rhem a.go... 🤫🤫
That is great to hear, Darren, and well done for trying the jellied eels
Looked absolutely delicious. A 10/10 ! I'm always a double double order! It's definitely a pie over with tonnes of vinegar. Now I can't understand anyone having gravy in a pie mash and Liquor shop.
Excellent Simon. Glad you liked it!
The salt beef looks delicious. Pity they didn’t do an alternate dish of salt beef, mash and gravy on top. I’m a fan of making pie and mash at home but not big on a liquor.
It was delicious!!
Another great review wish I could have seen this when I lived in Ware Herts. Upside down pie. Made me order a Fray Bentos, pie do you know how expensiv that is in te US to eat sogy pastry, well let's just say more than your total for a nice meal tanks.
More than welcome Derrick!
Considering the amount of tourists I could see in the background I'm kinda surprised that that renowned Pie - Shop still does business.
Your description of the food was very encouraging.
😋
Colonisers not tourists
Thank you. It does a lot of business!
Yes we’re a dying breed around ere!. So sad.
@@stevestone4346 it's not sad, it's a disgusting travesty
Not tourists mate. Sort it out
I've been to some of the other pie shops, Chapel Market and Greenwich. The pies were raw on the bottom. Glad this is better
This is excellent!
Absolutely, the one is Greenwich was horrid
Love pie and mash.looks great.😊
It was!
Oh to have some real pie , mash and liquor with lashings of vinegar. Yum
Maureen's pie n mash is, and by the sound of your recommendation still, the best you can get! I moved away from Poplar 22 years ago and nothing can compete with their pie n mash that I've tasted since. Not many things I miss about East London, but this is certainly one of the few things that make me want to stop by when I can! 👌
I travel down from the north east especially for pie and mash. Love the stuff 😍😋
It’s a superb place. Can only highly recommend!
Another superlative Gary Eats video, production and presentation. Living in Manhattan, I envy you. Great food at incredible value. Wondering, is Salt Beef basically pastrami? It looks unreal. That Salt Beef sandwich would be $24+ in Manhattan.
Hello to Manhattan. I would love to visit NYC. Indeed it's very similar!
@@GaryEats Way too expensive in Manhattan. When I return to England in 2024, I'll be a regular at Maureen's, as well as many of the Gary Eats spots, including Toby's.
Excellent!
@@hoppysport2872Salt beef is the British name for corn beef, and where are you getting your bagels, even by NYC prices $24 is a bit much, though that’s the price at Katz for pastrami on rye.Cream cheese, and lox is usually about $10-12 at most bagel shops.
Salt beef is silverside, it is immersed in salt solution for days to give it that taste. Lovely with pease pudding carrots and boiled potatoes. Make your own pease pudding soak beans overnight in warm water to soften with small spoonful of bicarbonate of soda.Next day put in basin with seasoning salt pepper, boil in saucepan of water until soft. Season if required add little butter delicious
Thank you both, I do not eat pastry, sweet or savoury, just the filling!! Have a great day, love from Cyprus. 🤗🤗😎😎
I hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow🌹
@@GaryEats Thank you Gary you should be in bed now!! 🌹🌹😋😋
I have eaten there & can honestly say with hand on my heart, that I have eaten in nearly every London Pie N Mash shop, but you simply cannot beat " Cooke's " Hoxton Market N1. They were the biggest in London and every shop family run. The last one left is Joe Cooke along Hoxton. They still bone their own beef to make pies and same crust recipe for over 70yrs. Just the best. Also bloody pricey now.
Hi mate. Glad you enjoyed it there, all the best. Thank you for watching!
I live near Finsbury Park and sometimes get the 'urge' for Pie & Mash, so will pop down to Cooke's in Hoxton Street! Although, TBH, I just realised I have not been in since February... Duh! Where has the year gone?
Great value for money, I would just prefer the gravy over the pie, not sure about the green liquid
Don't knock it till you try it. It's colour can be off putting but it tastes delicious.
🤣🤣'the green liquid' I've never had it but I'm aware people rave about it, so I should really give it a go👍
Fair enough! As long as you like it 😊
Maureen’s is up there with the best, but GRAVY??? Not with pie n mash. Never.
Got it to keep everyone happy. I go with liquor.
The pie & mash shop was a 10 score all day long. I would imagine they own the premises, which keeps their costs down.
Spot on.
10+ easy my kind of food amazing price look and learn all you tv 👩🍳 😅
😋 so good to eat Colin!
Have never been to London,to a pie and mash place, but know theres alot of amazing places, some open ,24 7 ,prices and quality especially the one you reviewed, ten, behond the charts, Darren john would say 👍
He would Andy. This place is superb!
Pie and Mash is insanely good value and the Salt Beef looked great.
All that superb food for less than a tenner, I’d be there every week Gary lad.
So good mate. Get down there if you can mate 👍🏼
You'll really upset the purists having gravy Gary!😆 Next time you hit SW London try Golden Pie at Clapham Junction..make sure you save room for a spotted dick or syrup sponge with custard though. 😋
Haha, I ordered gravy so that everyone is happy. Okay mate, I will try and go!
Gary that was potentialy the best vid ive seen you review, incredible value ! the pie looked amazingz !! and the sandwich is a defo ( this is before ive heard your mark 10/10 lets see what you say >>>>> yep abosolutley Gary, great vid and review !!
Means a lot Lee. Thank you mate!
Salt beef bagel looked amazing, There's a famous bagel place at the top of Brick lane that's famous for them but this one looked way better! Theres also a place in Selfridges on the ground floor that does them but you can imagine the price. Might be an interesting comparison. Pie and mash looked ok, im always put off by the amount of slop on a plate for me. Too much wet food compared to texture! but thats just me
That's fair enough Nick. It's an acquired taste!
Much better feed than you got at those expensive joints which often are just show😊😊
Indeed!
Some of the other guests were giving you the eye when they came in HaHaHa!🤗😂🤣
Very funny 🤣
The myth of expensive London has been exposed, so jealous that looks fantastic 👌
Haha there are many bargains in London. Just hard to find!
I'm a frequent visitor to London, and eating in local places that could be described as off the beaten, I find prices no more expensive than anywhere else. East and North East London I highly recommend for eating. Tourists need to be more adventurous when eating out in London.
Omg
Proper food
Proper people
Proper value
Tradition is there for a reason
DELICIOUS
Spot on!!
It looked like excellent value Gary ;) They should open one of them up in a few other towns ;) specially, with value like that ;) people struggling financially, ( great video, my friend, lots of great content ;) again you made me feel hungry, hungry thank you for sharing all the best CQ 😎👍🎤🇬🇧🇬🇧
That would be good Chris. Thank you mate, very kind of you.
You have sold this place, I’ll be making the journey there!!!
Thanks mate!
"Childrens pies?"....how many to each pie?
🤣🤣
Beigals not bagles beigals ar made by hand with old traditional ingredients the grandfather of a bagels😊
Thank you!
£4:20......bargain, better than that McDonalds you had!!! Nice looking pie. As always, a delight to watch and a calming video, which usually ties in with my last 5 minutes of work, so the perfect way to start an evening........keep warm!
Spot on. Hope you had a good day at work mate. Thank you for watching!
Gary, forgive my ignorance but is salt beef the same as Corned Beef it sure looks identical to me ?🤔 Here in New England, Corned Beef is considered Irish food and is served on St. Patrick's Day with cabbage potatoes, onions turnips and carrots. 😋
Virtually yes. No problem, ask away!
@GaryEats I'm enjoying your videos so much and learning so much. I'm sure you are aware most people from the states have mixed ancestry. My husband's people on his father's side are English, Scot, and Irish . We have traced back to 1600s . They came from Inverness, Belfast and I can't recall exactly which English Region, He writes poetry so Wales 🤔 ??? Anyway my cooking matched his Grandmother's recipes for many things and pleased my father in law very much (I make a tasty bubble n squeak, and great chowders)which puzzled me since some of my mother's people were from County Cork . So what I gathered from this video is the same foods may have different names in different areas.
That is crazy value for money! Excellent stuff
It really is! Cheers Stuart 😊
Another great video Gary you are by far the best food reviewer I have watched keep up the good work.
Too kind. Thank you my friend!
The liquor used to be made with the liquid that the eels were cooked in,whether it still is I don't know
Not as much anymore Michael!
The price in this economy?! Insane value
Very very good value!
10 all the way.........................great vlog as always.
Legend!
I've visited Maureens a couple of times as a relative lives in Poplar. We have also ate at East Enders Pie & Mash shop in Crisp Street Market. Both are excellent.
Superb to hear Robert. Thank you for watching!
OMG.....! This is the only guy that can make me dribble with them close ups .! 😂 Well done Gary that was an exceptional review... Keep em coming. 😉
Lol!!! Thank you Chris, glad you liked it!
Yes, Pie and mash. 😁
That pie and mash looked amazing! Can't believe you had gravy!!! That's a hanging offence. The lads I worked with in the print back in he 90's wouldn't have sat with you if you had gravy.
The mash has been scraped on to the plate correctly 😆. I like two pies and single mash. I saw at the start of the video that is only £6.70. That's giving it away!I
The salt beef bagel looked frankly sensational. One of my favourite things to eat and that's as good as anything I've seen in London.
That place is a 10 by a country mile. I'm going on Monday!! 😂
Another brilliant review.
Arments is my favourite but at this price I am happy to convert.
It was absolutely superb. I had to get gravy on the side to keep everyone happy otherwise I'd have lots of comments asking where's the gravy haha.
Really hope you enjoy it Andrew, from the food, to the service to the ambience - it was a delight. Enjoy it mate!
