'Calcutta' is the anglicized version. 'Kolkata' is the version as is spoken and written in bengali, hence is the original version. A lot of bengalis when talking to someone in hindi or english yet still may use Calcutta, because for quite a few recent years that was the official name hence we say it out of habit. But when speaking in bengali will again use kolkata.

Like Rick said Jews & Judaism. The peoples group / race & religion are different.
Indians (Hindus) are people between Indus River (S{H}indhu nadi) to Indian Ocean(Hind mahasagar)
We had over 400+ kingdoms in recorded history pre-British & pre-Mughal era. Nobody same belief system. No same way of worshipping.
Kings courts had debates with wise religious gurus from all over. Thats how Buddhism spread to China.
Not like missionaries spreading Cholera blankets or Islam spreading by swords.
Through word of Peace. & healing herbs of Ayurveda & defense through Shaolin & stamina building through Yoga.
As they said Jews were amongst 1st FOREIGN religions to come to India.
So technically Hindus & Hindu Kings protected & sheltered them.
Not to Forget our Rich Culture.
Columbus didnt go to look America.
      He was Looking For INDIA.
Because the rise of Islam cut off the Land route/ Silk route of olden civilization.
As Shashi Tharoor's speech said The Greek women were fond of Indian Muslin cloth that was describe as " As Fine As Woven Air".
And I would love to know ANY LINK that we can find to help save Jews' heritage sites in Kolkata & everywhere else in India for that matter. Even Parsis if possible.
They are Landmark heritage sites of rich history & culture of our Land.

Bombay was actually Bon Bay, the good bay.Circa 1550AD the Portuguese sieze the Island from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. It became a bay for European ships to land/dock in India so it was the Good Bay or the Bon Bay. Around 1660 AD, it was given as a Dowry to Catherine of Braganza when she married Charles II of England. He then leased it to the East India company to develop it as a trading port. Bon Bay became Bombay with alteration of pronunciation. The cluster of districts/ villages which was predominately of weavers and fishermen suddenly became a busy port called Bombay.
Today's Bombay was way different some 300-400 years ago. Today's South Bombay or Town was the actual the Isle of Mumbai (Bombay). With the industrialization by the Brits, setting of railroads, the different islands got connected by road or filling up of basins making a , making 7 Islands into 1 big Island of North and South Bombay. It was hub for ttextile industry and exports.
The name Mumbai comes from the the original village and its Goddess- Mumba. The Word Mumbai is conjugation of 2 words- Mumba (Goddess Mumbai) and Aai (Mother in Marathi - the local language), hence Mother Mumbai- Mumbai (Prononunced- Mumba-ee)

Some Jews are still there in Kol and quiet prominent in the social circles. I had Jewish friends in school ( of mixed descent) and I noted that a Rabbi used to teach the students of that faith in the school during the earlier decades of the last century. Some central Kolkata quarters are dominantly Jewish owned...

  • @eodobird7657
    @eodobird7657 4 роки тому +5

Well...Kolkata is the actual pronounciatuon in Bengali which is derived from 'Kolikata'. Infact Kolkata was made by combining three villages Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kolikata on the banks of river Hooghly(a distributary of the Ganges). Kolikata was a fishing outpost while Sutanuti was a weavers colony. Job Charnock is often credited to be the founder of the city...although the region has been inhabited for over two millenia! It was a part of an estate belonging to the Mughal Emperor. According to a legend when the Brits first landed, they asked a farmer about the name of the place. But the farmer misunderstood and thought the man was asking him when had he reaped the rice he was carrying on his head. He replied 'kal cutta' meaning 'reaped yesterday'. In this way the city's name is actually a misnomer.

There's also the story of the Jews in Mauritius, where there's no known / recorded incident of persecution be it systematic, organised, carried out by individuals or otherwise. For being Jews that is.
During World War 2, Mauritius, then a British colony, did host Jews who were fleeing persecution in Europe.

The kolkatta jews (also called Baghdadi jews) were the last cluster of Jews to arrive in India. The first ones were the Bene Isarelis (Sons of Israel) around 1000- 1200AD, it is said that a storm in Arabian sea pushed a a ship of 8 families of Jews to the coast near Bombay. The landed in a small fishing village and then settled there. For work, being industrious by nature, they started pressing oil that was used for cooking and varnishing the the fishing boats. Though cut off the motherland, they did continued their Jewish traditions. Given that they followed Sabbath- That means no work on Saturday. They were called Shanivar (Saturday) Teli ( oil pressers) . Over the centuries, they adapted to living in INdia and picked up some rites and rituals from their Hindu neighbours. Though many of them have biblical names or names from 1st testament, many have adopted the surnames from villages they come from- So if you see Ashtumkar ( From Ashtum) or Penkar (from Pen), Nagaonkar ( from Nagaon), Many of them also use David as their family name.

We have welcomed Jews, Zoroastrians, Buddhists, Muslims alike.
While jews were being persecuted all over the world before formation of Israel, Indian jews were stay peacefully. India also has one of last surviving groups of Zoroastrians who migrated from Persia(Iran) during 7th century after islamic conquest of Persia. Mumbai and gujrat has a big Zoroastrian (Parsi) community. We have also given Refuge to Dalai Lana after China was after him. While Muslims from central asia were fleeing during Mongol conquest, we welcomed then too, and 1st Mughal Emperors was from modern day Uzbekistan. While we may be little xenophobic now, india used to be very chill. Now all of the sudden we've started talking about "outsiders".

We had no reason to discriminate against the Jews. The “discrimination” we are seeing elsewhere is strictly based on Religious rivalry, which is not there in case of India or actually Hindus. It’s not a country based but a belief based discrimination. They were not discriminated by Americans, British, Arabs or Turks and also not because they were Israelis. They were discriminated by conservative Christians and Muslims because of their beliefs. Hindus never had anything to do with other ways of life. So they were just another group of people. Hence the possibilities
