You need to realise that the British looted [estimated at c. US$45 Trillion stolen from 1757-1938] and deindustrialized India to fund and sustain their own development - search jason Hickel India. Calcutta became prominent because Bengal was the bridgehead of the British occupation with its plunder a killing of tens of millions of Indians in dozens of manmade famines [looting India's foodgrains for British Food Security and Profit whilst forcing India's poor to starve]. Prior to British occupation Bengal had been the richest province in the world's largest and richest economy - Mughal India. Britain was then the richest part of Europe and Bengalis were as rich as the British per capita.

The British deindustrialized India, suppressing industries and plantationizing the economy to serve Britain's manufacturers and exporters - see Shashi Tharoor's book Inglorious Empire. India had actually produced the best steel in the world (Wootz) according to English experts in 1770 and Sheffield copied its techniques.
Thus it was no surprise that after independence as India started to industrialize [the US and UK refused to help build the steel plant at Bhilai in 1951 trying to prevent competition - so the USSR stepped in and helped India industrialize - the West then gave some 'aid' to stop India moving into the Soviet camp] Calcutta would decline relative to the rest of India as there had been next to no industrial development in most parts of India under British rule and plunder of India's wealth.

The Kolkata Metro was and still is a property of the Central Government. The responsibility of the state govt is to only provide land for the metro, so the metro railway in Kolkata had nothing to do with the commies. What roads did the commies build in and around the city? The roads in Kolkata were there from the British rule. And local trains? Again local trains are a property of the Indian Railways, the commies had no role in the development of the suburban local trains. The contribution of the commies which made them electorally popular was Operation Barga where agricultural land was snatched from the landowners and redistributed to the sharecroppers, allowing hawkers to vend on the main streets and arterial roads occupying footpaths all across Central, North, and parts of South Kolkata which makes the city look dirty even today. Heavy indoctrination of students right from the primary schools to the universities. I remember kids from the primary classes telling me that they were made to recite "amra kara? kaste hathuri tara" by the teachers. Rather they started destroying the public transport in the city by indiscriminatingly shutting down the tram routes instead of modernizing them.

Kolkata has a glorious history, in mid 50-90 s kolkata saw downfall but now IT and tech is growing like a Rocket. And the last This city is the key of economic growth of Eastern India and it's will be grow again

Kolkata has this old retro hong kong vibes to it. Went there last year & my friend who is kind of a nostalgia junky really enjoyed that place.

@@ReldrikGeo Again, not entirely true. The poor maintenance situation that you are saying was prevalent, circa 2014. Since then, slowly the trams have got a major boost from the state govt, and are today well-maintained and new ones are well-designed.
The numbers have been dwindling though.
@@ReldrikGeo its reducing because its neither economical nor save time. It can only be seen as tourist attraction. Another old technology is Nilgiri Mountain Railway which is a old single rail system only exist because it cannot be replaced and it attracts tourists.
They recently launched a tram restaurant to boost the tram heritage tourism in the city. Meals on wheels baby 😊
