Honestly if Beyond the Spider-Verse delivers its gonna be one of the greatest movies of all time- literally. Its gonna be the third and final movie of the already multiple award winning trilogy, with OVER TWO YEARS of build-up after a cliffhanger.
A cliffhanger like this makes sense to and excites me, honestly. I like thinking about how the story will be so incredibly to watch finish, and how hype it will be to watch all my friends with the movie in a year or two. I though across the spider-verse was an incredible cinematic experience despite the flicchanger
I think part of why it structurally hit weirdly to me is kinda what you touched on about degrees of cliffhangers, i.e. just a little tease at the end instead of cutting before any resolution. But part of it kinda comes from how we as an audience have been primed by hollywood. We are so used to heros journeys and three act structures, and this movie mostly fits that. we get the problem being introduced, the change to the status quo, the teams splitting up and heros lowest moment... then credits. It didn't feel like it ended after the mid-peak like some split movies do, it feels like it ended right before the climax, with like 20% cut. Part of it is an audience expectation problem, especially since they didn't include 'part 1' in the title. Apparently if people followed the press releases they'd know but most people didn't. It was a very satisfying slow build though, and when its watched all together as a trilogy in the future it'll be great. I love slower stories which is why I generally prefer TV shows to movies, more character investment. At least the movie was engaging enough to make people feel a strong genuine emotion, even if if was mostly anger, better than apathy like a lot of superhero movies give.
P.s. Kinda a huge achievement that its the sequel to a movie that is on a huge pedestal, regarded as a perfect movie by many, and the main complaint is that there isn't more of it.
@@samoconnor5567if that’s the main complaint then that’s the perfect issue as it shows people clearly loved it and wanted even more, can’t wait to see what they do with the sequel!

Am I the only one who genuinely was satisfied with the cliffhanger??? Honestly... It wasn't _that_ big a deal. The movie was just so good that I didn't care. And it being a cliffhanger just means that we'll get even more movie when the next part comes out. It doesn't bother me because most of the movie's character arcs have already been resolved by the end of the movie (more specifically, Gwen's arc). The movie started with Gwen being unsure, and not being able to communicate with her dad. By the end of the movie she is able to recompense with him and come to terms with everything. Her dad even quit his job as police captain, proving that Mile's was right... Gwen's dad inadvertently avoided the supposed "canon event" because he's no longer a police captain, proving that canon events can be avoided safely without destroying the universe... Which perfectly sets up for the second part, which I assume will be more focused on stopping The Spot and the conflict with Miguel, as well as The Prowler from Earth 42. This movie really felt like Gwen's movie, while the next half will be more about Miles I think.
I was hoping he would talk about how it might feel if Beyond also ends on a Cliffhanger? With so many characters and plot threads I could see it happening. Like if Beyond deals with saving his Dad and dealing with Miguel but the Spot situation gets bigger and we get an ending like Infinity War where the Spider people mostly lose but need one more movie to win it all back.
The part about hidden identities really hit home. I’m at a bit of a crossroads in my life right now. Finished high school and had a university course picked out, but that course didn’t suit me. Besides, I could really connect with people and fit in. I’m not one to approach others and that led to a lot of self-isolating. It led to a search of what *does* suit me. And now I have picked out a new university study. But I’m anxious, because I feel like it won’t suit me this time either. And I have this creative, artistic side to me that I admire about myself. But others, even those closest to me, really don’t know how integral that is in my identity. They can’t know; partially because I’m afraid to let them, but also because it’d probably be too vast to grasp. I want to write stories and compose music but I hold myself back, probably out of a fear of being judged. Even though these parts of me have been there since I was little. This is my big hidden identity. And I feel like I should unleash it. I feel like I should not look towards going to uni, but rather develop my writing skills. And yet it’s kind of a societal expectation to go to university if you’re smart enough for it. But I’m very sceptical as to whether that would suit me. I don’t think it will. I feel like there’s so much I hide away. Like a Spider-person hides away one of their identities from either the public, or those closest to them. I feel like I still need to find a place where I truly belong, like the spider-people within the spider society. Someplace to be my unveiled self.
The only issue I had with across the spiderverse was its cliffhanger. Like a cliffhanger like that is dope for a tv show, but for a large theatrical release? It’s absolutely frustrating. But I’m still excited for the next installment
When the movie first came out…I was so confused… “Why is everyone around me freaking out?” Truly, I felt nothing when the film came to a cliffhanger. Did I want more? Sure. But it’s not like the cliffhanger itself left me unsatisfied with what I watched.
No I definitely did not leave dissatisfied, I loved Miles’ and Gwen’s arc though the movie, even though everything wasn’t wrapped up I loved it from the moment it started until the credits ended
In the past five to ten years binging content has gotten so much more popular and episodes are now closer to an hour. Everything is built to be less episodic since writers have to account for how viewing styles have changed. Watching a series is more like watching a movie that lasts 12-24 hours. Movies used to be seen as the place to really flush out a story and tell it uninterrupted. Now, I feel more and more that they're more constricting in terms of story immersion than most tv series. I can help but think that a lot of stories (arcane, invincible) might have had similar issues had they not been in a series format. In the end Im happy to tell myself that they're taking the time they need to tell the story well. Rather than trying to pacify us they just said okay now you wait. Work.
Heeeeyy I've missed you! I was gonna say that I 100% disagree with your take for the first 22 minutes until your last point because yeah, when I realized that it was gonna end in a cliff hanger, and when it did I was so excited. Like, yeah, let's go, make another movie, take ALL the time you need to tell this story!!!! And I do agree with a lot of your (very well made and edited in the video) points, specially that Canon as Miguel insists does not actually exist, and I see SO MANY PEOPLE buy into that
You explained exactly why this film felt so incomplete: the 2 hours spent introducing plot points without resolving most of them. A good cliffhanger to a film is when that story still works as a standalone, opposed to relying on the next to completely finish it. Basically, “I wonder what could happen next” vs “wait, that’s it??”.
The thing about that is that this movie isn't meant to be a standalone, it was written to be a two parter. Across was supposed come out this year and wrap up the plot threads this movie set up.
I'd argue that, "Wait, that's it?" is a better thing to think. Instead of being satisfied with what you have and being interested in what, if anything, is to come, now you are desperately waiting to see the resolution. You're conditioned to NEED more. It builds more hype and will probably sell more tickets. Because let's be honest, the only reason you're disappointed is because everything was so good and you didn't get to see how it wrapped up.
I think this an amazing video about how the cliffhanger was extremely unsatisfying and made you feel a little empty handed. However, it feels a little eased when you remember that Across The Spiderverse and Beyond were supposed to be one movie. Where Across stopped was essentially the middle of the movie we would've gotten if part 2 and 3 were together like originally planned
The cliff hanger would've been fine with me if beyond released when it was supposed to (march 2024). But now we might not even get it in 2025. But that was completely out of their control with the strikes and everything so I dont blame anyone its just sad because this is currently my most anticipated movie
I'm going to have to disagree with almost everything you said about Across the Spider-verse. I loved the ending and I don't think I've ever left a film so happy. I think the fact that the end of this film feels like the beginning of another is what makes it better.
I hated the cliff hanger and was shocked how all my friends i talked to didn’t mind/mention it all. In my theater they put the lights on 5 mins before the ending thinking that it was some mistake and that there was still like 20 mins left just to be an unresolved cliff hanger. If i had gone in knowing there was going to be a cliff hanger I think I would have enjoyed the movie more but It just stung. This video definitely helped me appreciate the movie more.
I was confused when did I sub to this channel. Then the mentioning of Spiderverse brought my memory back. Hey man great video alright, and this definitely have the same feeling I got on Infinity War but at least that movie had a concluding ending for the villain
I think this was an amazing set up for the last film. We all thought he made it back home to save his parents, but then he was in the wrong universe, so it was a good plot twist. And I’m sure the final film will be amazing but also very bittersweet because I know one or more of the spider people will die, and I have a spider sense that it might be Gwen, who maybe saves Mile’s dad instead of himself and she is his canon.
The cliffhanger in Across the Spider-Verse reminded me of Halo 2's cliffhanger. It feels painfully obvious that they had to split the movie/game in the two. I understand why it happens but I'm not happy about it. I hope the third Spider-Verse movie kicks ass.
There's already enough pain in the world without artificially engendering more. I particularly hated how they undercut and jokified classic and fan favourite alternates in order to artificially prop up the post-modern alternates that no fan in their right man cares about. Some appear like they were revised halfway through in order to be more post-modern exclusive like the one in blue armor I'm pretty sure used to be Ollie Osnick
One of the best ATSV video essays! I always loved the queer allegory that Spiderman in general had, and your logic of the movie being about gatekeeping identities/media/etc. was actually really interesting.
Miles lied to his mother of all this leaving his parents to blame on themselves not seeing their son at their dimension of E-1610 for quite some time Miles was held captive cause the spider wasn't from his dimension and he ended up in the wrong universe anyway which is overun by the cartel of E-42 and Prowler Miles didn't seem to care or not letting his counterpart go cause he felt this pain that he lost his father
I was only hyped because it implied that Spider-Ham would have a bigger role in Beyond the Spider-Verse. His absence throughout a majority of Across was its biggest flaw.
I think the reason this was going to be two parts was because almost every Phil Lord and Chris Millar Project ends after two entries or on a cliffhanger either a gag or unresolved never to be picked back up on. They want this be their first full complete trilogy. Which why this became going to be two movies, basically making one big movie split into two parts. But the third one became so big they made it a separate movie. Thus making it this a trilogy. But with the rather notorious production of Across the Spider-Verse and the looming animation strikes. I wouldn't be surprised if BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE never gets made
Spot has the power to disrupt every universe since he became the abyss now powerful to terrorize E-1610 not seeing Spider-Man anytime soon he didn't know that Miguel and Jess are still there cause Miles was gone in the wrong universe
I think cliffhangers are fine as long as the wait for the next part is only around a year at most. Too many shows and movies these days make us wait way too long to see how stories we care about continue or resolve. If it’s gonna be multiple years until the next installment, we really should have more satisfying conclusions.
Honestly i wouldn't like if it kept going at that point, because, i don't know about but i want to be sitting in a theater for more than 3 hours. Not matter how good it was.
Could you please make a video on 'The Last Wish,' covering its themes and your analysis of the movie? It would be great if you could create more videos like the one you did on the Spider-Verse! You have a remarkable skill in analyzing movies, and I'd love to hear your views on hidden gems from DreamWorks or Disney. Some suggestions include 'The Road to El Dorado' and 'The Prince of Egypt.
My little brother told me this after we saw Across the SpiderVerse on its opening premiere, but he mentioned that he felt like The Spider-Society and what the movie’s depiction of Spider-Man 2099, was representing Marvel’s Editorial and how they want Spider-Man to be miserable. All the Spider-People who were against Miguel O’Hara’s wishes, like Spider-Gwen, Peter B. Parker, and Peni Parker, were representing the fans who don’t want Spider-Man to suffer a lot. With Miles representing the average person who likes Spider-Man, but is in between being a fan and a Marvel employee. It was an interesting explanation, but I don’t personally buy that considering that would imply Spectacular Spider-Man, and Insomniac’s Spider-Man, are just Insomniac and Greg Wiseman who agrees with Marvel that Spider-Man should suffer. Which would be infuriating for the fans since at the time, they loved Insomniac and Greg Wiseman for their work on the Spectacular Spider-Man series, and the PlayStation Exclusive Spider-Man games.
the ending of this movie was so crushingly lame that I don't even think I'm interested in watching the sequel, let alone in four years when it actually comes out.
I do love this movie, it tells an incredible story that's so well layered. But it really does sour the experience for me the way it ends. There are ways to do cliffhangers that are still satisfying as their own movie, their own story, Mission Impossible from last year is an example and Empire Strikes Back is another as you showed briefly. Both of those are very much part of the series and set up the next one, ending with some strings still hanging but they still worked as their own movie, they have their own conclusion whereas Across the Spiderverse ends mid scene, there is no conclusion to this chapter. They split this and Beyond into two, which is clearly needed, but didn't change anything after the split, it feels like they had both movies and just cut the first half and named it Across
@@edgeribble No I'd have rather they adjusted this movie to have a conclusion. This can be a part one while still being a good movie, that's how it's supposed to work was my point rather than cutting off suddenly
@@edgeribble Sure it'll certainly be better when both can be watched together but that doesn't mean this one isn't done a disservice for presenting half of a movie I think
@@Doomsword0 It was advertised as part 1. I like how it didn't try to wrap up the story and continue it if it was meant to be a part 1. It just recognised it couldn't finish the story and went wih it
i highly damn doubt you'll see this comment, but you should do a video just about hobie. He is an insane character and almost like has 2 personalities. just a thought. love your vids man
There’s also definitely something interesting about the whole variety angle you bring up, because fundamentally- Miguel is the most different spider person there. No connection to any people related to Peter, no spider bite, and has been directly stated to purposely be the polar opposite of Peter by the directors. So it’s interesting they chose someone like Miguel, THE anti authoritarian Spider-Man before Hobie, and who is such a wildly different interpretation of Spider-Man to fill the position he’s in. It makes me wonder if most of the stuff Miguel said to miles on the train was projection, seeing someone who’s a mirror of yourself when it comes to being different and getting reminded of who you used to be by their optimism. Slight disagree on your point in regards to the canon though. Miguel states what’s happened to Pav’s universe has happened multiple times before, with them not being able to save the dimension every time, so it’s not like it’s a two time coincidence. Something is definitely going on that we need to solve, but the issue is that Miguel is going about it the wrong way. Tbh ATSV is the definition of a lose-lose situation for every character in the story, cause it’s not like any of them want to be in their current conflict, they’re just getting pushed against each other when if anything they should be rallying with one another.
7:49 he begins to breaks down, pretty well imo, why movies like that succeeded where this one failed. Cliffhangers aren’t the issue, it’s how it’s done.
@@devzeppalin well in Spiderverse’s defense We see Gwen form a team to save Miles While Miles breaks the glove to access his electricity power So it’s a small set up

I felt like this, I didn't even realize why. Maybe this is it, maybe not I don't know. I find the analysis interesting anyway. Thanks !
This has to be Clickbait because the cliffhanger was PERFECT
You when a cliffhanger is a cliffhanger:😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬😭😭😭😭
I thought it was a perfect ending imo
night in the woods mentioned!!
For me, the main reason why I prefer ITSV over ATSV, is because ITSV has a clear start to finish.
finally bro finally 😢
the ending of this movie was so crushingly lame that I don't even think I'm interested in watching the sequel, let alone in four years when it actually comes out.
Would u have prefered a 5 hour movie, oh yeah u can't watch those in cinemas
@@edgeribble No I'd have rather they adjusted this movie to have a conclusion. This can be a part one while still being a good movie, that's how it's supposed to work was my point rather than cutting off suddenly
@@Doomsword0 They wrote it to be half a movie. When beyond comes out u can watch them back to back
@@edgeribble Sure it'll certainly be better when both can be watched together but that doesn't mean this one isn't done a disservice for presenting half of a movie I think
@@Doomsword0 It was advertised as part 1. I like how it didn't try to wrap up the story and continue it if it was meant to be a part 1. It just recognised it couldn't finish the story and went wih it
i highly damn doubt you'll see this comment, but you should do a video just about hobie. He is an insane character and almost like has 2 personalities. just a thought. love your vids man
Had me in the first half ngl
I’m more frustrated this video abt cliff hangers ended on a cliff hanger and I know what this guy was doing 🤨💀
And you lost me at wizard biggots. Goodbye dum beach
Atsv was one of the best movies I’ve ever watched expect itsv was probably better but that’s cuz atsv story isn’t finished yet
Ok but being real its common knowledge that its PART ONE i swear yall just want something to complain about😒
wow
Ight so it’s a problem when Spiderverse does a cliffhanger
But not when Empire strikes back or infinity war did one?
@@devzeppalin aaaaa ok
7:49 he begins to breaks down, pretty well imo, why movies like that succeeded where this one failed. Cliffhangers aren’t the issue, it’s how it’s done.
@@devzeppalin well in Spiderverse’s defense
We see Gwen form a team to save Miles
While Miles breaks the glove to access his electricity power
So it’s a small set up
Well I kinda did
I mean..it is was called part one in the trailer…I kinda saw that coming
