I feel like part of the metatext is that both Miguel and Miles have lessons to learn as the protagonists of their own stories. Miles does need to learn that he can't do both, that Spider-man doesn't always do both. But Miguel needs to learn that Spider-man always puts forward the best effort attempt to save everyone, even if he doesn't succeed. The point isn't succeeding. The point is caring. And not just caring in a broad text of "The fate of the multiverse" that makes the other Spider-mans brains die a little. Caring in the very real sense of RIPeter starting with "I want to save Manhattan, so I have to save the multiverse" and Miles' "I want to save dad, so I have to save the multiverse"
Basically, it all comes down to love. Our traditional understanding of Spider-man is founded in tragedy, yes, but that tragedy is rooted in love. Peter loved his aunt and uncle deeply, and through an ironic twist lost one of them through his own selfishness. The lesson was that you have to protect people you don't know like you would your loved ones because we're all interconnected. Meanwhile, Miles has that loving environment. It's not tragedy that makes the spider-man. It's the love his expresses and exhibits. This love is also what roots his tragedies. That's what life is. No one lives a life without tragedy. Spider-man experiences tragedies because he is human, because even when you do your very best to do everything exactly as you think they should be done, you will still lose people through accidental deaths, senseless deaths, breakups, fallings out, the slow decay of time after you both move to different cities. It would be strange for Spider-man to not have these tragedies, but they need not be inflicted on him by the spider-society for him to feel this gravity and to do the good he does. That's, I think, where Pavitr fits in. He didn't lose police inspector, Singh, no, but he still felt the weight of that potential loss. That near miss made him a better Spider-man, one who will take things a little more seriously going forward.

I love this Miguel is like the old ways of viewing who spiderman is and Miles is a newer version of it. Ive always wonder why does Spiderman HAVE to have such a unhappy ending. A part of it is cause they writers and audience love seeing the characyers struggle but at the same time I feel like they love seeing a character in dispair a lot more because we can connect with them. Ive also fallen to this perspective, at the same time I want to see my characters win and im seeing that shift as well in media. Give us the struggle but also a happyish ending, life isnt just one note so pur stories shouldnt either. Thats why I also love Peter B. his story was fallowing spidermans canon of being alone and sad, but bucause of meeting Miles his journey changed and so did he(for the better in my opinion)

Into the spider verse was about becoming Spider man and now Across the Spider-verse is how you choose to be spider man that what matters and Beyond the spider verse will probably be how you accept the challenges in Spider man righting your stories and doing your own thing
9:57, The specific theme of acceptance and rejection definitely works to connect all the characters and plot lines together, and not just with the primary protagonists in Miles and Gwen, but also the primary antagonists in Miguel and Spot.
Miguel first stayed in another reality too long because he felt he could only have a life and a family there, wether correctly or otherwise, but his attempts to find belonging and happiness only ended up costing the destruction that entire reality and everyone in it, hence his determination to maintain order at all costs, sacrificing any further search for happiness and targeting anything or anyone that threatens to repeat his mistakes.
Spot’s motivation for being a supervillain is purely based on the desire for validation of his suffering after losing his form and previous life to his condition and being rejected by his family and peers and though he comes to embrace it due to his growing abilities, he simply uses it and his obsession with being Miles’ nemesis as a crutch to cope with his loss, a loss he wants Miles to share in.
Meanwhile, Miles and Hobie, and by extension Gwen’s “band”, each are able to embrace their own identities without fear of rejection from others (though in Miles’ case, he may have more to go as he faces the consequences of the anomaly that deprived another Miles the fate of being Spiderman and doomed his reality to being infested with crime).
But the fact that “canon” is valued so heavily means that there is a limit as to how far any of these people can diverge from their stories before their realities disintegrate, before their stories become unrecognizable and stop “mattering”. That would mean the Miles likely won’t be able to save his father outright and would need a “technicality”, just as Gwen’s father quitting being a police captain supposedly saved him from dying. It is possible to change these stories, but not without preserving what gives them value, what makes the journey and struggle worth the destination.
No, our Miles deprived 42's Peter Parker of being Spider-Man, hence why no one has heard of him in that universe.

Concerning the canon as tropes, I think there's something to be said about the nuance of the story in that tropes CAN be helpful. Miguel's story where he subverted a trope only for his entire world, his entire narrative to fall to pieces, that CAN happen. Tropes exist for a reason, the best tropes work, they can be great devices and just like anything else can be the thing that if missing will cause a story to crumble.
And yet when tropes become not a tool, but a comfort, a place to retreat to and refuse to diverge from, you don't get new stories and each successive one just becomes worse and worse and worse because you've already seen it before. When you can't unstick yourself from all that is familiar to you, you can't grow or change.
Which where Miles comes in, because he is like the black Spider-Man. People actually got mad about this. That wasn't Spider-Man, he's supposed to be whi-.... uhhh... Peter Parker. Even if you take the worst reactions to it, racism is just that: An aversion to the unfamiliar, the different. Fundamentally the same thing that goes on in the mind of the comic fan who gets mad whenever they get something new. What goes through the minds of corporate executives who want to see money and decide that doing the thing you did last time is how to get it. It's the sort of thing that the people in charge of the Comics Code Authority were thinking. The same Comics Code Authority that both Spiderverse movies decided to stamp the start of their movies with in ironic fashion.

Great video! The only thing that I would've added is for the metatextual analysis. Specifically, the real life resistance from toxic parts of the fandom to Miles Morales being Spider-Man based on racism. Miles being treated as a second class Spider-Man, if not worse, was to me a clear inspiration for the direction of the story and a well deserved middle finger to those who have been complaining about him for that reason.

I do think it's ridiculous that two people in the same universe could develop an almost identical, positive mutation as a result of ionising radiation. Ionising radiation causes random mutations to DNA, usually resulting in cancer. However, in the world of Spiderman, it's not that unbelievable that the mutations could result in spider powers. The odds are low, but it's possible. (Obviously it's not possible to gain premonition as a result of any genetic mutation, but Spiderman's other powers like swinging and super strength could potentially be replicated in the real world with careful genetic modification. Or just firing beta radiation at someone and getting extremely lucky.)
But the odds of it happening twice are practically nonexistent. It's impossible.
Although, with multiverse stories, stuff happening against near-impossible odds can be brushed away with "There are septillions of universes in existence, and we chose to show you the only one where this happened because the others just aren't that interesting."
I hear comic Miles is boring though and the fans think the writers are trying to replace Peter with him, so I don't see the racism angle so much as bad writer intentions.

I disagree about Gwen’s dad’s motivation for trying to arrest her. I don’t think he chose duty over his love for his daughter, instead he put all of his faith in a system meant to distinguish the innocent from the guilty. He thought that if Gwen goes on the run, she won’t get the opportunity to clear her name. If he arrests her, her innocence will be exposed because that’s what the system is meant to do.
If that's the case, why didn't he explain that to her when she returned?

the identity/race/gender allegory stood out to me first bc im not a teenager anymore, im a black queer adult now. Rio's speech about being told we don't belong somewhere/not taken seriously/discriminated against is very common to black/brown experiences, specifically having to get a speech from our parents sometime in our lives about racism. ther'es also the confirmed allegory about people not wanting miles to be called spiderman bc of his race. navigating life as spiderman can be seen as a general allegory for being stealth/being in the closet but especially with gwen's speech that also had word choices very similar to being queer along with the trans flag in her room and the trans colors

I love how Hobby from the start wanted miles to break the cannon and always supported him when he did something "wrong"(in Miguels eyes). He even gave Gwen tge watch and reminded Miles how tonescape that red energy prison using his palms.

One of the most important themes in this movie is control. All of the characters exhibit their thoughts on control and have things happen to them because of control.
Miles became spiderman out of his control but when he seemingly starts to control his ability to be capable and bold as spiderman, he starts to lose focus on his normal life causing his parents to assert their dominance over him so that he can get things in "control". Going from the first movie we already know that he struggled with the feeling of responsibility and how it weighed him down, this film adds more weight onto him by having his parents expect him to be a good student and son in their own perspective. Miguel then shows up telling him that he's a mistake and that everything he ever worked for was inauthentic and he was at fault for Peter's death... All of this control and lack of control that was thrown at him is what causes him to say the iconic "Nah imma do my own thing"
Gwen was explored deeply in this film. We get to see her dynamic and her lack of "control" over what occurred in her life with the loss of Peter and her father pinning her as the primary suspect. She joins the spider society as a jobber doing things and it isn't until she gets back home that she and her dad have that heart to heart. In her dad's pursuit of doing what was right, he forget about his other more important job which was to care and to nurture his daughter. After he releases that false sense of control and justice, he then finally resonates with her and they make up. PS. There's more to discuss about control with gwen as she accepts the fact that things happen out of their control as a means to cause Miles to not save the inspector in Pravitar's universe but she then realises that the major difference between her and Miles' Canon event is that she tried to save Peter whereas they want him to allow his father to just die.
Miguel is the epitome of control in this film. From his assumption of leadership over the whole spider society to his aggression, we find out a lot about himself. He is bent on order due to his mistake that led to the destruction of a universe. There isn't much else to say about him as we don't really spend much time with him but that's it. Moving on to Hobie, he's a rebel through and through and all of his monologues and one liners all involve rebelling or being against controlling powers. He is quite literally the only reason Miles escaped in the first place.

I was absolutely blown away by across the spider verse when I first saw it.
I still think deeply about those movies and I really hope the third movie is even better and makes this trilogy go down as one of the best in film history.
I know I will come back to it a lot when I start writing my stories.

Several times during my viewing of this movie, I found myself absolutely awestruck by how gorgeous it is. The way certain moments wrap you in colorful softness and gentle themes is something I’ve never experienced.
Everyone here must have surely told you how cleverly you structured this video and they are right. But for me, this is one of the most important pieces you've ever made. For an aspiring storyteller like myself, this is a VERY IMPORTANT reminder to never forget the people. As clever and engaging as our themes are, the characters are what make it all stand and fall. I'm so grateful for all your work, but I have to thank you especially for this video. It matters to me greatly, even if it's but one tiny piece of the blurry picture that is the internet.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Across is a much much better movie than Into. When I saw Into, it didn’t really leave a lasting impression on me, but Across has been on mind constantly ever since I watched it.

Been waiting to watch this since I saw it in theaters, great work
i also see "a lot but also a little" in terms of the animation. it can go so fast with so much movement, but they do not miss a beat when it comes to micro expressions/gestures and using as little movement as possible to express the most significant emotions or personality. they pay attention to how every single muscle would move in ways that are very individual to the characters and successfully do this with so many at that. i enjoy the way you said intimate and personal, when a character is important, this team doesnt just want them to have their own importance in the story but they work very very hard to make sure theyre all seen as individuals we can connect to in an unprecedentedly detailed way. This brings me to another contradiction I enjoy where it practices realism while also doing the exact opposite. theres a very impactful and addicting mixture of this and theyre cearly very purposeful with each one instead of lazily trying to fulfill some quota for making a Good Movie
The first video of yours I saw was Batman and it made me cry actual tears. This one moved me in ways and levels I'm not sure you really intended to. But it still touched me in a very personal sense because I can sense your empathy, kindness and your willingness to connect. I don't know you but I like how you think and what you're trying to do. You're a net positive in the vast world and the internet and the space of creation/art.
