It was masterfully made but way too long and messy IMHO. I just didn’t care for it, and my children (whom I did go to the movies for) didn’t like it either. It’s really beautiful to look at and some characters are great; don’t get me wrong…. But it’s presenting way too many plots and I didn’t enjoy myself because of the (bad) sensory overload.
I have been waiting patiently for this video to drop, and now I'm tearing up as I press play. Just as I cried when I stepped into the theater to watch the masterpiece that was Across the spiderverse 🙏🏻💖✨🕸️

not one, but the BEST spiderman film ever made
One of the best details in the film is that Miles wants to study physics and quantum mechanics because he wants the chance to see his spider friends again in another dimension. Just shows how alone Miles felt and how he needed Gwen and the other Spider people
I love the idea he wanted to see his friends…but those were friend with a lower case f, that man wanted to see Gwen, and the barriers of the multiverse wasn’t gonna stop him 🤣

Even better detail. It’s been shown through the movies and how Miles makes his costumes, that art is his true passion and is really good at it. But he was willing to put his true passion aside so he could study physics and quantum mechanics in order to see his old spider friends given by how alone he felt, just to find out his friends had a way of visiting him the whole time and never did, due to the Spider society, or more accurately Miguel’s orders.
I don't trust people who hate gwen after this movie. She is a 16/17 year old girl without a home and with a knowledge that her dad and her best friends dad has to die. It's normal that she doesn't tell Miles about it. The whole movie she is telling that the thing Miguel tells her to do doesn't fill right. At the end she trusts her gut and makes a "band" to save her best friend. She litterly felt he was in danger across the multiverse.
Besides Gwen did the right thing in the end which is too back miles

It was really cathartic while also being heartbreaking to see her tear up when miles says, “you were right Gwen, you should’ve never come to see me.” She really hurt Miles, but was trying to prevent doing that the entire time. Beautifully tragic character
Thank you for shedding this light because i did not like Gwen after this movie but I think I have to look at it from this perspective for sure
People have ulterior motives for hating on Gwen. She was not only battling her own trauma but off the info the people who saved her said, this was the ONLY way. Once she learned that wasn’t the case she formed an army to save Miles.
I love that the reason Pavitr is so optimistic and happy seems to be because he hasn't had a true moment of suffering. So he's just this bright and happy, almost naive spirit, and of course he gets along with Hobie.
Presumably he's had an uncle ben moment tho

The fact that they were able to write the real world criticism of Miles Morales as a “Spider-man” into a major plot point in the movie is nothing short of brilliant. That is absolutely mind blowing.

@@veronikamajerova4564 it was mentioned in the video: the twitter, as always, had problems with Miles. Some people, apparently, were saying that he is not a real spider-man because he's not white or has no uncle ben or whatever else is different from original Spider-Man story. Ultimately saying he is not CANON, meaning he's not spder-man or one of spider-men but rather just a side story that is not related to the 'canon' spider-man story. As far as I can tell, I wasn't aware of such drama.
@@anmakesart Which is ridiculous considering it is one of Stan Lee's most loved characters and stories he helped create. Stan has talked about Mile Morales spiderman as one of his best work long before the MCU existed. It's important to consider that twitter doesn't exist anymore, it's "X", an extremely toxic hellhole harboring the hate speech and misinformation spreading of terrorists, white supremacists, antivaxxers, and generally the worst people in the world. Purchased and run into the ground by quite literally the most insufferable billionaire to have ever existed.
Anyone using "X", as a reference should be disregarded from any conversation.
Whoever in the animators' room decided to have the art style reflect the thoughts of Gwen and her dad during their conversations deserves a raise PRONTO!
It’s genius everything about this film is genius the opening sequence with the pass tense speech, the emotions of regret and sadness, the miles prowler theme in the background foreshadowing. The use of colors for gwen emotions because she struggles to express them. Miles swinging and hearing everyone breaking him down and his uncle saying “keep going” this film is so amazing bro.

The way that Gwen is framed in shades of blue while everyone else is in shades of reds and orange, and Gwen fills with warm colors when she hugs her dad? Fucking beautiful

I like the fact that Miles is playing the role of KingPin this time around as his willing to potentially destroy his universe just for a chance to save his father.

@@Flipitmixit its a very thematic thing, everytime the multiverse has any issues, its due to a single persons urge to save something special to them.
But miles doesn't want to wreck his world for family. He completely refuses to trade one for the other. The trade that kingpin wanted to do even though he knew it would destroy things. The trade that Miguel didn't know would happen if he chose his alternate universe life.
Miles knows what could happen, and he challenges it. He wants to save both instead of trading one for the other.

People bring up the cliffhanger like it's a bad thing but I haven't felt this giddy for a sequel since Infinity War. THIS is what cinema is all about. I have never been so excited for a movie as I have for Beyond the Spiderverse, and that's entirely because Across the Spiderverse pulls off the perfect cliffhanger.

Right! Like I loved the cliffhanger, my first thoughts were- "oh my god I can't wait!!"
The reason the cliffhanger annoyed me was, I didn't realise there was another film in the works. I assumed this was the last part of the story.
Looking at the 3rd installment though it's only a 3 month wait now.
I actuallly teared up when Miles’s mother gave her speech on him being her little boy always. Absolutely brilliant writing.

I weirdly teared up when Miles was arguing with his dad at the Party knowing that Miles’s dad could possibly die or is fated to die in the movie, and now knowing that he definitely is fated to die, that scene makes me cry every time.
The best part is had she not given that speech, when Miguel had him pinned, he would’ve lost. He says what makes him strong is the bond he shares with them, had she never spoke about protecting himself from people who tell him who he isn’t he would’ve been completely emotionally down and he would’ve been imprisoned and left for his parents to die. Ironically she doesn’t know how much that conservation meant not just for Miles but the entire multiverse.

I think the people that are complaining that it's only "half" a movie are seeing it incorrectly: Miles isn't the main character. Gwen is. She has a full arc. She starts by saying that she never wants a band again, but at the end; SHE'S the one to put the band back together to help Miles.
I think Miles will still be the "main" character if Across and Beyond are taken as a single movie though.
Exactly this. Gwen realizes her mistake, reconciles with her father, and builds an army to fight for Miles. The movie starts and ends with her. That's not an accident.

I wouldn't say Gwen is necessarily the main character because the story revolves more around Miles, but she did get a complete arc and it seems Miles is still in the middle of his. I think co-leads best describes Miles and Gwen in the movie
Miles has a full arc within the narrative as well. I think what a lot of people are missing is that the coda of this movie is what Marvel would stick in as post credit sequences and ended the film earlier. And I’m super happy to see a studio buck that trend and just include the setup as part of a crescendo. Honestly it’s so much more effective, to me at least.
@@tmm4195 in the end I think they’re both equally the main character, but it’s clear that Gwen’s arc was meant to come to a close in this one while Miles’ would continue. So I can understand why some might say she is the main character over Miles
Loved how Gwen’s story mirrored her father’s story. George Stacy was a cop who was trying to play by the book when it came to the legality of Spider-Woman. He turned his back on his own daughter because that’s what he was supposed to do.
When Gwen felt abandoned and alone and was taken in by the Spider-Society, she gave all of herself to their cause and was playing by the book. She only wanted to go to other dimensions just to see Miles, similar to Miles only wanting to find out how to to other dimensions just to see Gwen and his friends. She felt alone and just wanted companionship. With the fear of going back home, Gwen dedicated herself to just sticking to the life that was written for her until she has the one moment of weakness where she gives into what she wants, kickstarting the whole plot.
After that we see Gwen’s struggle between what she’s supposed to do and what she feels compelled to do, and by the end she comes out the other side realizing that sometimes you have to throw out the playbook and fight for what we truly want. And this development gets mirrored with George Stacy quitting his job as a cop because he values his daughter much more. Gwen’s story was such a great cautionary tale and parallel for Miles and just a great story overall. Loved how the film bookended with Gwen’s arc.

I also loved the hint that despite everything, George doesn’t give Gwen’s identity away to the other cops. Despite how hurt he is by the revelation, he understands that his pursuit for revenge for Peter 65 won’t benefit anybody but himself, that if he’s just gonna wear the badge to fulfill a vendetta, then he shouldn’t wear the badge.
not to mention how in the beginning of the movie, gwen's color palette is blue a lot of the time, indicating just how lonely she is, how much she misses miles. it's a physical representation of the seemingly impossible distance between her and the only living person she could call a friend, added onto the impossible distance she has between herself and her peter, though that one is even more impossible than her one with miles, as what separates her from peter is that of living and dead. and gwen ends up even quitting her band because of just how much she's going through, further isolating herself from other people.
which is paralleled by her dad, who also had a more blue color palette when she returned in act 2, because he missed his daughter. he realized that "she was the best thing he'd ever done" and that he'd made a horrible mistake reacting like that when she revealed herself in act 1. and in the end, he quits being a cop for her (seemingly disrupting another canon event that would isolate gwen more, since him quitting means he's no longer a captain and therefore she doesn't have to worry about not being able to save him now). but unlike when gwen quit her band, him quitting doesn't further isolate him, instead, his choice fixes that emotional distance that he put between him and his daughter during gwen's canon event with him in the beginning. and so gwen pulls him into a tight hug and her dad's color palette isn't blue anymore.
because him quitting actually fixed that emotional distance (and potentially stopped a painful canon event from happening) while gwen quitting only served to put more emotional distance between herself and others, and so her palette stayed blue because of that.
i just really like the contrast of these scenes between gwen and her dad in act 1 vs act 2. *act 1:* a canon event happens and puts emotional distance between the two of them when he threatens to arrest her even after she reveals herself, causing gwen to run away from him. versus *act 2:* when gwen finally comes back, she gives a speech that makes her dad choose to quit, which stops, or at least puts off, the canon event of her losing a captain. then, paralleling act 1, gwen this time freely offers her wrists for him to handcuff and arrest her but her dad refuses and says that he quit. and instead of running away from him, she hugs him. and in the end of that scene, her dad gives her the box with the watch hobie made, and she leaves him again, just like she did in act 1, only this time, she promises to be back, and they leave on good terms.
Miles in a way snap her back to reality and know she had to do the same for him, their connection is so strong that she sense him in another universe.

Did anyone else just burst into tears with Gwen's opening story...it was just so damn heartbreaking to see Gwen coming out to her father and her father by mistake rejecting her...the pain and heartbreak in Gwen in that scene was so sad and i did cry in that moment

It was also interesting that both Captain Stacy and Gwen had a sense of duty that went above their loved ones. Captain was willing to arrest Gwen; Gwen was willing to let Miles’s father die.

im really glad someone brought up the parental guidance Miguel tried to impart onto Miles before he went batshit. I mean the look of genuine sadness and empathy when saying "we all wish we had the life we wanted, believe me I've tried".
And all the criticism about him not even trying to find a different way makes sense too.
Like, this is a matter of billions upon trillions of lives there's no actual ethical way to test any other theory because the risk is too high. Only a monster would be willing to go through with it, and none of them are, they're all people trying their best to keep everyone safe.
So they do what works and hope to God that nothing bad will happen.
God I love how morally gray everything is.
@@MacBunny6978 And when you get to the heart of it, Miguel is right that there's really no way to make Miles see things from his point of view. He knows that it's just not in Miles' nature to let someone, especially his father, die.

But he has so thoroughly convinced himself that this is the right thing to do, because the consequences are so bad that he has to burry that part of himself.
(Also because he's just really bad at coping with his guilt and loss, and he's still an asshole about it, so I hope he at least trips on his face in the next movie.)

One detail I REALLY liked being a music fan is how they treated the relationship Miles and Hobies respective genres and characterizations of those genres. Hobie appears as this (literally otherworldly) spirit figure, the ghost of old fashioned punk, aiding and providing advice to this modern hip-hop inspired Miles. Kinda depicting the direct parallel between punk rock and hip-hop as rebellious movements. I feel that Gwen could be representing a kind of link between them since even though she’s a drummer in a punk band, the early roots of hip-hop happen to have a heavy emphasis on breakbeats and drum loops a lot like the one they used for her intro and outro moments. This is really such a beautiful movie and everyone needs to see it.
Did you notice how the multiverse motif gets played over both Miles' motif and Spot's? The first multiversal event is what links miles and spot.
Also, that ending sequence music is spectacular. Prowler's theme over a distorted electronic version of Miles' theme, Spider-punk's musical texture over Gwen's, working in sync with the Spider-Hero motif.
This is a phenomenally unique and on-point thing to realize, so true
Dude! This comment is genius!!! The more I sit and think about this movie, the more I realise saying it's probably one of the greatest movies ever maybe isn't a hyperbolic statement 😅
Being a musician, this is exactly how I felt about the score as well. There's also that metaphorical reason that in punk rock drums and guitars behave more like angsty and rebellious "siblings" rather than a duet, which also mirrors the relationship of Hobie being the more chaotic brother of Gwen rather than a romantic interest.
In hip-hop, you dont usually get drums, but when you do it usually acts like a duet with the verse and complements the other instrumentation around.
This is also kind of reflected towards the end when Miles's Leap Of Faith score starts and is complemented by Gwen's drumming, but which is then made a bit more chaotic but energetic when Hobie's electric guitars and other frills are added in the mix signifying the rebellious nature that somehow go very well together.

This analysis was perfect. One more thing you could have mentioned is the role of Peter B. Parker in the movie. He represents the "original" Spider-Man and he acts as a mirror character to Miguel, being the living proof that Spider-Man *can* live a happy life. This is something we're not at all used to see in Spider-Man movies, where Peter never truly grows to have a family on his own, and I think it's awesome that even here the movie chooses to "go its own way".

It seems like Miles is around his father when he’s Spiderman more because you can notice that he is not treated as he usually is. Like a kid. He’s treated as this mutual but superhuman that he can work with and trust to protect the city, a man, and not a kid that’s going through a phase and has to be grounded, with his actions, opinions and feelings being neglected and dismissed.
Oh man...I could see Miles wanting to interact with his father more as Spider-Man because Jeff doesn't treat Spider-Man like a kid.
I felt like I was being hyperbolic telling people it is one of the best films I've ever seen (I'm 40 by the way, so I've seen a few). Thank you for validating my perspective.
The Spiderverse movies are one of the best films ever made let alone Marvel films, and a lot of people hate it when we say that because they didn't want Miles to be this popular.

friend, i'm 41. And yes, this is absolutely one of the best films ever, and i'm really glad i'm alive to experience it.
Last week, I talked to the co-creator of Spider-Gwen, Robbi Rodriguez, about the opening scene of him adapting his art style. He said it was really breathtaking to watch his style be brought to life on the big screen.

A parallel I noticed was between Gwen's dad finding Peter vs Miles' dad finding Uncle Aaron, where they both called a manhunt for their Spider person. Miles' dad, however, changed his mind early, and is likely to handle Miles' identity better.
Something else I found so beautifully, extraordinarily relatable about AtSV is the way that the older Spiderfolk like Miguel and Jessica enforce the idea that pain and trauma is what makes a person strong, it's what makes them who they are, really parallels dynamics irl between older generations of POC and the younger, even though what they should be doing is offering support. And in the end, Miles finds major support within the multiverse Spiderpeople mainly from people closer to his age. Can't tell you how many times I've experienced this personally. It's so amazing how there are so many layers to this story and so many lenses through which you can view the Spiderverse movies. AtSV was such a treat
And the one adult who dissented? Peter B. Y'know, the guy who actually was inspired by Miles to just take a leap of faith that his problems in his own life are not permanently broken and can be salvaged.
This is an excellent point that I would like to see explored more!
All I gotta say, is that if Beyond the Spiderverse keeps it up with consistently and effectively pushing the boundaries of what a (spider-man) multiverse movie can be, this is shaping up to be one of, if not the best animated movie trilogies of all time.

What do people mean by "Miles hasn't gone through enough trauma to be called a Spider-Man"? That boy saw his uncle get shot, the guy who he went to anytime he felt lost. Funny thing is Miles never grew through drama, he actually grew worse when Aaron died. It was only his father admitting his own imperfections and seeing potential in Miles that gives him the confidence to grow.
I loved Miguel as an amtagonist. Like, you know he is not evil, but that it's his ideology and own trauma making him too overbearing. You understand him and his anxieties even if you don't agree with what he is doing. He's an extremely compelling character because you know he does care. As you mentioned, despite what he says, he is indeed quite paternal which causes us to view him with more color than with just black and white. I also love how you mentioned that Miguel himself is an anomaly, too--even more so than Miles. I look forward to how the next movie tackles these themes and find resolutions.
I also love how he had the same goals like Kingpin in the first movie, but the motivations and positions are inversed.
Kingpin wanted his family back, presumably because he was in denial that their death was his fault and blamed Spider-Man for it.
Miguel in comparison just felt guilt over the fact that a version of himself died and wanted to help his daughter.

You CAN NOT watch that scene where he pins a literal teenager to a wall, screaming about how he causes pain JUST BY EXISTING and come out of it thinking that Miguel is anything akin to a hero. You CAN NOT watch that scene where he IMPRISONS the ONLY PERSON who could save a life by arguing "if he does save him the multiverse collapses". Because to me, it is giving cult behavior. He has all of these people following him under an ideology and if they question that ideology or contradict it, they are kicked out. And in Gwen's case, he chose her KNOWING that she had nowhere else to go and did not offer her any protection from her situation should she choose a path different than what he wants. And she is LITERALLY undergoing missions with the idea that she can not interact with anyone outside of the society. It is literally a cult.
"Okay but he genuinely believes in what he's saying." How do you know that he's not lying? In the post credit scene of ITSV he does not immediately go to his family. He goes to Spider Man 1. Moreover, does his backstory not seem like Kingpins WHOM HE SAW GET DEFEATED IN ISTV? Why would he presumably try the same thing that King pin did after seeing him fail? Thus, my head canon is that he borrowed elements from the Kingpin's story in order to make a narrative that would strike a cord with literally the most powerful people in the multiverse to get whatever he wanted. Even if the story is true, how does he know that there was a causation and not a correlation between the events of him going to a universe and it collapsing? Would it not be better to halt multiverse travel and undergo actual testing? His motivations and his actions are literally in conflict with one another.
Miguel is literally more evil objectively than Spot because with all of the talk of revenge, at least the Spot doesn't declare Mile's to be a mistake altogether. Although we do not know Miles 42 situation, he may literally just be an anti hero. That just leaves Miguel. So please, someone explain how he can possibly even be seen as morally grey?
An absolute Masterpiece! I'm 49yo and take my 10yo kid to the film. When I entered the movie, I was getting used to the idea of wasting two hours of my life. What a surprise. It is one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life. The art, the colors, the movement, the music, the cinematics, the story...absolutely stunning! The cinema has taken another great leap!
Gwen's story throughout this film gets to me. I understand her actions all come from fear and love. Love for her father and love for Miles. She's scared that her father might reject her and stop loving her. That alone is so heartbreaking, and to see that fear carry over to her relationship with Miles adds to that heartbreak.
I love Miles and Gwen's relationship. Their chemistry is heartwarming, but I love how their stories parallel one another. It says something when a film can get me fully invested in a relationship considering the buildup that started their friendship from the first film. Even though Gwen keeps her feelings for Miles bottled up, I love that those feelings are shown in other ways.
How her universe portrays her emotions in different colors. Her hair becomes pinker, and you see it get pinker when she explores his room. The room becomes pinker. Gwen is running away from her heart alongside her problems. It brings me back to the statement "a leap of faith." She did that with her father, and it worked out, but now she needs to take that leap with Miles.
You can see how lonely she is in the movie and i feel like that's why she keeps so much a secret from miles instead of telling him as she knows she would get sent back too her world to be alone again where she believes her dad hates and fears her. but she misses and likes him too much not to go see him when she got the chance.
The pay off in the next movie is going to be so satisfying.
its pretty interesting how this is contrasted with her actions towards miles in the movie. on numerous occasions shes untrustworthy and even betrays miles, such as her keeping secrets (as said in the video) with her previous interactions with hobie such as her sweater and shoes as stated during the mumbattan collider fight, and also how she betrays miles by helping the spider society chase him like when she boosts jessica towards him. she also had completely abandoned miles for a long period of time and kept more secrets from miles which were revealed after miguel choke slammed him on the rocket. there were more instances of gwens questionable behavior but i dont know if these were just incidental from the plot, or if they were just due to her tendencies to keep secrets and stay bottled up because of her history and life like with her father, or if shes actually untrustworthy but why? i feel that these actions towards miles serve to outline the consequences of her staying bottled up and not opening up in general especially in terms of her relationship with miles and are meant to prove and give reason to the decision of her finally opening up instead of staying bottled and lonely as she had before which made her life really suck before, like when her color palette was blue which was explained in another comment

Truthfully i think its far more than this. Hobie is a revolutionary and rewatvching the movie you can see it throughout that he is already incredibly skeptical of the system and just waiting for the connections and time for it to crumble
It’s a great 4-D chess move that not only did Hobie make a DIY dimension watch for Gwen, but that he gave it specifically to her father. Because I’m order for her to get the watch to save Miles, she would have to confront her father and the issues that created the rift between them, thus helping her grow and facing her more central demons. As if to say “if you’re to fight the fight out there, you must overcome the fight within yourself”
For me this is a flawless film. People say that this is an incomplete story, but that isn't a flaw for me. In fact after a long time a cliffhanger has me this hyped for a sequel.
Also even if next part doesn't end well (if somehow the animators get morb-ed), this part for me will still remain a materpiece.

One of the themes that I don’t see anyone talking about is the whole idea of our weird need to give pain meaning.
This movie dared to ask a question not only I couldn’t ever have come up with, but out right consider heresy at some point of my life.

Thing is, many of us do feel like growth only comes with pain. It helps us cope with our pain and at times there really is a lesson to be learned. But just like Miguel, we’re deeply afraid of seeing that our pain actually may have not been necessary at all. Our self image falls apparat the moment we realize that our trauma was not necessary to be better people.
Miles represents the opposite. The infinite potential of us stopping to depend on our trauma to explore the world around us. What we could be if we chased after what we believe in and desire.

exactly! one example is pavitr himself. the boy was overconfident in his abilities and believed that being spiderman was easy.
at that point, the ones who believe that pain makes spiderman who he is think that gayatri's dad death would be the one responsible to "humble him".
however, he realized that it wasn't easy immediately after spot disappeared, even when no one had died yet. he took things seriously, and made his best effort alongside miles and the gang to keep everyone safe. more importantly, when faced with a situation that put in danger his loved ones and innocents, and in which he needs to make a choice, he did what spiderman always does: try to save everyone. "I can do both".

while we need to keep in mind what peter porker said ("the thing about this job is that you can't always save everyone"), that lesson doesn't contradict itself with the mantra of every spiderman: always get up, always try again.

everything that happened wasn't caused by his own actions. he hadn't acted selfishly, or like a coward. he didn't do anything wrong. and the only thing that death would've created was trauma and the pain of not being able to save someone he cared about, someone important for others in his life - unlike the usual uncle ben scenario, which is normally caused by peter's carelessness.
he would've been forced to bear immense grief and sorrow due to bad luck, literally. and that wouldn't help him become a better spiderman or person, it would've just take him through a path of self doubt and fear.

Another great parallel that might further explain why Miguel hates Miles is that Miguel perceives him to be an anomaly that can exist in his own world and happily be with his family. He's a reminder and almost slap in the face to Miguel's attempt to be with his family as an 'anomaly' in another world. Miles is everything he wanted from his own life, to be Spider Man and be with his family without fear of destroying the multiverse

Miguel being the primary antagonist and not an actual villain was a wonderful and really interesting twist. He's like The Architect combined with Agent Smith from the Matrix but with good intentions. The alternate Spider-people are like anti-agents.

The use of comic book canon as a way to tell a story about Miles actualizing his own identity and also as a meta commentary about telling Spider-Man stories was brilliant. Right down to the ending they maintain their thesis statement about Miles’s battle between fate and free will. The ending really contextualizes Miles’s story in a way that strikes at the core of his identity. Miles lucked out by winning the lottery to get into Brooklyn Visions Academy by drawing the number 42 and Miles lucked out by getting bit by the 42 spider. I love that these films show that people aren’t just born evil. They are a product of their environment and their circumstances. Miles was given the opportunity of a lifetime that many people just like him don’t get.
And what better way to show that than by actually making an alternate universe version of him the Prowler? Back in Into the Spider-Verse we see Miles’s spider-sense turns from green and purple to red and blue. It goes from Prowler colors to Spider-Man colors. This suggests that Miles was originally on the path of Earth-42 Miles. He was set to become the Prowler’s protege as opposed to Spider-Man whereas 42 Miles was supposed to become Spider-Man. That’s such a brilliant way of playing into the theme of Miles’s story of feeling like his path is laid out for him, but he just wants no expectations. Such a good narrative decision.

I disagree that he would've become the prowler, I think that was just an artistic choice of two spider-people sensing eachother or whatever, seeing as it happens more and more and it's different colors every time. The main reason is that Aaron was already the prowler, and I don't think in his universe he would've wanted Miles to go down the same path he did. He wanted better for Miles and he never would have let him become the prowler (especially because he already was the prowler) I'm assuming it's majorly different because Miles dad died in their universe.

The use of color is very intentional in animation. And green and purple have consistently been used to show danger in Spider-Man stories since multiple Spider villains have those color schemes. Notice how Earth-42 is bathed with greens and purples to indicate danger as Kilometers Immorales is the Prowler. I think something much more significant is at play with Miles’s green and purple spider-sense colors turning to red and blue. After that moment, Miles makes more of an effort to become Spider-Man even though right before he wanted nothing to do with being Spider-Man.
@@Ren_Davis0531 The reason why it felt like Miles wanted to become spider man after that moment was because Peter died, and he entrusted him to shut down the collider. Miles felt it was his responsibility. Also I'm not sure what they intended with the colors there, but I mainly think he wouldn't have become the prowler because of how Uncle Aaron is portrayed in Mile's universe. He's a "bad guy" but he's not a really bad guy. He's a good guy who went down the wrong path in life and just wants the best for his nephew. Rewatch the scenes with him and Miles and you'll see he genuinely cares about him and wants him to pursue his passions. That Uncle Aaron would have never let Miles become the prowler. I also strongly believe that Miles losing his dad on Earth-42 led to him becoming the prowler. It could also be the case that Earth-42 Miles and Earth-42 Aaron are just vastly different people and Aaron is a much worse person, but we haven't seen enough of them to know that.
I definitely think this is the best interpretation of a spider man’s double life. Like miles is missing important life moments, crucial social events and familial relationships but he’s doing it so everyone else can have those things. And the best quotes in any Spider-Man story is when they start saying “it’s gonna be ok, I can do both, I can save everyone every time” it always breaks my heart to hear them being torn apart.

Man I wish I rewatched ITSV because I feel like I didn’t understand ATSV on a deeper or more meaningful level, but I still liked it a lot though. Whenever ATSV goes streaming though I’ll rewatch it along with ITSV
24:25 the leap of faith is gonna be so important to the next movie I can see it already. In ITSV, Miles was about to jump off a building and try to swing but he chickens out and takes the stairs. The same thing happened in ATSV during the first fight with Spot but it was Miles dad who chickened out of jumping through a portal and took the stairs. BTSV is going to lean heavy on Rio and Jeff relinquishing some control and trusting their son to spread his wings and save the day. I wish I had a Click remote and could just fast forward to May 2024.

Everyone who worked on Gwen as a character(writers, animators, actress, etc) did an absolutely phenomenal job making her almost always feeling on edge during tense situations. More specifically the kinds of situations where she's terrified of losing someone else dear to her.
I also tend to struggle a bit with bottling emotions, so watching Gwen is basically just watching myself and it's portrayed SO WELL.
I really hope girl goes to therapy after the 3rd movie :)
I love how Gwen’s world’s color changes to reflect the emotions and tension felt in that specific moment! It makes her world feel multidimensional, and sticks out from the other dimensions in Spider-Verse.

I think another interesting aspect of Miguel's focus on the need for "Canon Events" to create Spider-People is how it rolls into the themes of the first movie that "anyone can be Spider-Man". Do we as individual human beings NEED to suffer great tragedy and trauma before we can bring ourselves to help each other? That sounds ridiculous, right? So how is it that Miguel could possibly believe what he's saying, if he wasn't being clouded by his own incredible traumas?
Yes! You articulated that really well. And saying that people "need to suffer" would mean that you shouldn't necessarily help them because you might hamper their growth. Like, wtf???? If someone tells you to stop helping them, respect their request, but don't just not bother to help if you're able.
The whole Spider Society he established is a coping mechanism. Being a Spider is not about being shaped by destiny's cruel hand, it's about impacting the life of others in a positive manner. Of course, being shaped by his own trauma, Miguel is looking to reshape every Spider in his image. And his reason for this is 'canon,' which is just the name he gave to his trauma, the sense he made of the tragedy in his life.
@@emilyrln I think most people tend to help people but still has some selfishness and doubt. But experiencing trauma warps that feeling to the point of giving 120% to save everyone all the time. The kind of situation that will turn a normal guy to a full hero, a man to a Spiderman.
My humble opinion is that Miguel thinks trauma leads to that drive but in reality the mindset should be cannon, not the loss.

Unfortunately, trauma affects everyone differently, so Miguel could just as easily be helping supervillains come into being by insisting on canon events taking place. Also, some people don't need acute trauma to overextend themselves in a very Spider-Man fashion. And then you have folks like Peter B Parker, who worked so hard saving the city that he burned himself out and ruined a relationship for a while. There's no guarantee how anything turns out, for Spider-folk, villains, and everyone else… Miguel's whole philosophy seems like a way of rationalizing his own pain and giving it meaning, as others have said more eloquently than me.
I think in real life... actually people do need some suffering, at least some challenge in their lives. Think about it, spoiled people who have never expereinced pain or setbacks tend to just be awful. It is only when you experience bad things that you learn how to empathize with others. I know thats not the answer people want to hear, but I think some level of suffering tends to be required to be a truly good person. Without suffering, there is not going to be compassion.
I saw it last night. I wondered how the hell they were going to top the best animated film I'd ever seen, and now I understand why it took them nearly five years. It is a STAGGERING accomplishment.
Next film will have to be 3 hours to conclude everything they showed on this one.

I totally loved this video. The film was nothing short of brilliance. I was 13 when ITSV came out, and it really helped me and moved me enough to take leaps of faith in my self from that point. I am now 18 years old, and ATSV is just as inspirational if not more to me. I really related to miles and his daily life struggles as I am also gonna go to college, the weight of expectations is on me and I ain't gonna give up after I have watched the movie.

sje was a great character from the day she was created. Slight differences from the comic version in terms of her background and the tragic event that made her decide to be a hero and not pursue personal gain (in the comic she went too far in battle and beat Lizard/Peter to death wven when he was pleading her to stop, thus causing him a heart attack. In the film shows she made a mistake in a moment of recklessness and caused an accident that killed him).
Shows this event further made her "close up" in relationship with the world, but also made her make mistakes that in fairness, dug her hole even deeper (not seeing Peter was close to snapping, amking it worse by standing up to his bullies this unwillingly huniliating him, killing him accidentally and fleeing the scene, trusting jess and miguel, lying to miles and george etc). Eventually shows in the end she stops runningnand faces her problems.

I believe this may be to the lack of empathy those people might have for Gwen and the actions she decided to take in the movie. I wasn’t a big fan of her in the first film but once I saw the second film, I immediately connected with her and her story. I put myself in her shoes (but I kinda didn’t, since I’m similar to her in a sense of having trust issues). I struggled hard with having a place to “belong” and seeing her go through that resonated with me. She might be one of the most human characters in the second film since she has an arc unlike the rest of the cast.
Side Note: There could also be a sexist thing towards her but like I don’t really know? So many types of audiences can be more tougher on female leads.

I absolutely love everything about this movie. One point that I saw is when Rio is talking to miles on the rooftop and tells him that wherever crowd he runs with better treat him right. And when he meets Miguel's spider society and realizes whats actually happening, he concludes that this isn't his group and plans to leave even against all odds because that is how he was raised. This was the advice his mother gave him and he took it to heart
The scene where Miles gets the cakes for his dad and has Spider-Man Related obstacles from the bakery to his home was perfect. He wasn't out there confused on why it was happening or talking about how difficult it is to live both lives, you felt it. In fact, you feel that sense so much in the movie before he ventures into the Spider-Verse and that is something I love so much about this film. It shows more than it tells.
the only bad thing that i left the theater with after seeing this movie was a headache because the colors were so vibrant and alive. and it was 1000% worth it.
i want to relive the first time i saw this movie, because it truly blew me hundreds of dimensions away. everything about it is just perfect. ITSV and ATSV are both perfect movies in their own wats and i can only hope that BTSV is the same.

First movie ever in my 37 years that I saw in theaters 4 times, twice in iMax, and I must say, seeing this in iMax sitting a bit in the front was truly an outer world experience, everyone I went to see it with minds were blown 🤯❤
This is by far the best movie I've seen not just in 2023 but in years. It deserves not just the best animated feature but best film. That's because it's not just visually stunning, the pace, storytelling and character emotions are off the charts brilliant.
I relate to Gwen’s story so closely it was almost gut wrenching to watch it in theaters, amazing take on both this movie and it’s characters

@@chrisblank1376 i wouldn't be so quick to see that connection to gwen as something to get past. her role in atsv /is/ defined by pain, secrecy and breakdown of trust, but also of catharsis, confidence, and healing. everyone's story is shaped in part by trauma, but gwen's arc (and atsv on the whole) is basically /all about/ not being defined by that trauma, but also not just ignoring it
also gwen is 1000% trans, her story just makes too much sense through that lens
@@servvo While her story, and Miles' one as well can be defined as a story of coming out, being something you think you will be judged for, I do not beleive Gwen is trans, though her story does portray emotions that a lot of such ppl feel during the part of their life that they are hiding it.
The title really sums up this film for me. Idk if its better than the first for me but what it does is just spectacular on every level. The visual style, animation, music, acting, writing... The set-up for BTSV has genuinely been perfect & I can't wait for it.
Hearing that Miles is going to have a panic attack in the short film/spinoff of his own personal issues that takes place BEFORE ATSV is really interesting, considering that we'll know how much the pressure affects him. The writers are really just so passionate for this whole world of spiderverse and im all in for it
As a 27 year old Spider-Man nerd, & father of 3- this movie spoke to me on so many levels.
To relate to Miles, but to relate to his parents even more, really hit me. Rio’s speech to Miles on the rooftop had me balling tears. Not only did I see & hear my own mother through her, I saw my own feelings for my children through her, both her & Jeff.
This movie was everything. I’ve been with Spidey since TAS, through all the console games from Spider-Man 2000 on the PS1 to todays Insomniac Spider-Man, all the comics, I remember when Miles first debuted & I HATED HIM lol. (I was a younger kid & I basically was heartbroken over Ultimate Peter being killed off. I think WHOEVER took his place I would’ve hated, so it wasn’t Miles personally.)
Nowadays this kid is my third favorite Spider-Man! Tobey Maguire & TAS are my definitive iterations but Miles is my 3rd favorite now
& it’s an amazing thing to watch my 3 children grow up with ALL THESE VERSIONS lol. Best believe Dad shows them all 🕷️
Since Sony has been trying to get a Spider-Man vs the Sinister Six scene for literally over ten years now... man, imagine if in Beyond The Spider-Verse, we get Gwen's Band against a version of them.

I’m down. I see Miles either escaping his alt self / uncle or working with them against the universe 42 crime bosses (sinister 6) Miles 3 v 6 or dare I dream 1 v 6 them till Gwen’s band arrives to take the load off his shoulders.
If you listen to the background while Miles Prowler is on screen, you'll hear that he's a part of the sinister 6 and their Vigilante Cartel.
Count the number of villains in the first movie dude. Goblin, Ock, Tombstone, Scorpion, Prowler, Kingpin. SIX. Ock just cements this as among the many, many, MANY versions of the six, ock is the one constant.
I just love the fact that the creative team return to their own story by paying homage to the creative freedom that was given to them throughout these films, as they tell others to stop making animation films by the book
This movie came out when I was 19, so I could emphathize with Miles growing apart from his parents despite still caring for them. This movie will always have a special place in my heart.

I always have stuck to my beliefs of: to be a hero, you don't need to have to or had to have suffering in your life, but know (and use the knowledge of) that a hero is a person who does the right thing, even if anybody tells them to do something wrong, they will only do the right thing. Do not give up either, as this will lead you down a path of suffering for not just you, but everybody you want to protect. Miles is the definition of a "hero" when it comes to this belief.
Great take. Got a new subscriber. The two scenes with Gwen and his dad are what got me and you managed to communicate what I was feeling for both. Would like to add however that Captain Stacy quitting his job presented a valid counter argument to the canon events. She broke the canon event by revealing her identity to her dad which ended up with her dad quitting the police force. Her universe didn't collapse. This made her believe that Miles is right and that as Spiderpeople maybe they can do both. They can save everyone.
It's such a mature take on Spiderman and shows how developed these Spiderpeople are.
I mean totally agree with your take on Tom Holland's spiderman. He has been through everything. How can you not grow up from the events of infinity war and endgame? And yet we get stuck with a Peter Parker who hasn't grown one bit in No Way Home until he finds out there are other Peter parkers and that his aunt would die.
This is one of the most beautiful video essays I've ever watched, and it both encapsulates so many of the views I hold about the movie as well as made me realise many themes, ideas and connections that I missed or didn't form myself. I think miles line to miguel "Are you sure you're spiderman?"was one of the most important in the movie in my opinion.
Spider-verse was one of those movies that I had high expectations for.
It exceeded my expectations and slapped me in the face for having such low expectations.
One of the significant things that back up your Miguel point is that Miguel purposely leaves how breaking the canon vaporizing the universe as vague. He never addresses how replacing a universes spiderman erases it, and how it compares it with breaking the canon in Pavitar’s was completely different. Showcasing everything disappearing like a glitch in Miguel’s replacement, and Pavitar’s with a black hole, which is designed to look like Spot. Which alludes that Spot caused that rather than breaking the universal law.
One of the biggest things is how when Gwen asks Miguel what happens specifically when the canon breaks, Miguel pauses, doesn’t answer her question and passes it by asking if she wants to figure out by then berating how she was a weak link in Miles escaping. To me that seems like Miguel is hiding something.
On a side note, the movie is astounding and for those saying it was only half of a story. To me this is was enough of a satisfying movie. The movie started with Gwen wondering where she will fit and discovers she can create her own, by no longer running from her problems. Miles started the story by the fear of what his parents will think of his identity, and ends with Miles realizing his family is who boosts him up and finally opens up to his mother, even if he technically isn’t.
And the ending gives a spark of hope, and thank god they didn’t end it on Prowler Miles saying “I’m Miles Morales, but you can call me the Prowler” cause if they didn’t showcase Gwen going after Miles and Miles planning to get out, then it wouldn’t be as satisfying, but thank god they did.
I saw a video the other day that said something along the lines of "If canon events aren't real then that's a plot hole" without grasping the whole argument that you present. Thank you for putting it better than I could.
Genuinely the best film I’ve ever watched. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING about it is just incredible, the plot, the humour, the characters, the character arcs, the art styles, the MUSIC, the little details, how everything combines together, the designs, the story that is just incredible, the re-watch ability, the timing. I could go on and on it is just a work of art I love it
Excellent analysis. I feel like you're a step ahead of most people with regards to Miguel. I hear a lot of "you can see where he's coming from" and "I think maybe he's hiding something" or even "it's interesting to me that he's so into canon when he has such a non-standard backstory, I wonder if that will come to anything in the next movie" while to you Miguel is self-evidently full of shit. You've got me on that train and it's a good train.

I just realized: Miguel trapping Miles in his force field and Miles breaking out of it is a quite literal visual metaphor for Miguel trying to force Miles into a box and Miles refusing to be confined to that box

Bro Gwen’s story was so well done especially when she revealed to her father it had the right amount of buildup and the background details also added up to be an emotionally powerful scene. Damn those first 20 minutes alone were better than any movie I’ve seen in the past 2 years
This is my favorite film of all time. Never before have I been so enthralled by a cinema screen. It makes you believe in the magic of film again. It feels so unconstrained, by artstyle, by traditional narrative structure, by upholding the cannon and tries to actually utilize some of that infinite potential lying in every film, that potential that was getting squashed by the homogenization machine of blockbuster hollywood. I'm happy this is "half" a movie, because how else could we have experienced something like this, a 4+ hour animated epic of a continuous story. Never before has a western animated film tried to be so ambitious, and I see no reason for it settle and compromise itself because of an arbitrary constraint that the film needs a tidy little bow for its arcs and narrative for it to end and be a full movie.

This movie is genuinely my new favorite of all time. The complexity of Gwen’s situation in the spider society and her connection with miles is easily my favorite part of the movie. I see this film as Gwen’s movie, like how itsv was miles. The animators did such a good job with how they made the characters express their emotions. Like in the scene where Gwen reveals herself to her father after the vulture fight, you can see the amount of confusion of what to do in the moment on her father’s face. Or the scene when miles gets “jailed” by Miguel before the chase sequence and the look on Gwen’s face. It’s filled with sorrow, guilt, confusion, etc. she wasn’t so badly to help miles but she’s scared of losing the only place she really has to go and losing people that can understand her. And that’s all conveyed by how she just stares at miles while this is going on. This movie touched me on such a personal level and I really connected with both Gwen and miles and what they’re going through. I love this movie so much
Miguel is one of my favorite things about this film and his role as an antagonist because it’s really clear that Miguel is in the wrong and is really insecure about himself as Spider-Man. He was the original successor of Spider-Man a Spider-Man who is way different from many others with more biological powers, talons on his fingers and feet, no spider-sense, natural webbing, no uncle Ben. Miguel was very anti-authority in his story taking down Alchemax and now is the authority figure he used to fight since this is clearly an older Miguel.
Miguel again seeing himself in Miles and it’s really shown during their fight Miles questions if Miguel is really Spider-Man due to his power set and it just sets Miguel off the edge and just goes mental on him.
Really can’t wait to see Miguel eventually realize his ways and team up with Miles since Miguel is one of my favorite Spider-Persons and wish we got more of him in the current day
this gwen my favorite female superhero now her character is done so well in this movie. Right from the beginning you can see how alone she feels and how that goes into every wrong and right decision she makes. goated movie.

Hobie is the best. He might not be the most developed but they used his character perfectly.
When you spoke about the classic line of "With grest power comes great responsibility" after the comments on Canon events it made me consider those events in a different light.
What if Miguel is only halfway right, what occured at those times were necessary canonical moments, but he has missed the forest for the trees thanks to how jaded he is.
Its not the pain, suffering and grief of those moments that are the necessary canon, its the life lesson that tends to come with them "With great power comes great responsibility" and "You cant do both" and others i cant think quite remember.
It leaves a pathway where the pain and suffering doesnt have to happen, because he learns those lessons another way, with the "you cant do both" we may well see his dad survive, but only because Gwen and the others save him, Miles on his own couldn't do both and he still learns that, but thanks to friends his dad survives, much like the Bridge incident with Pavitr.
Fun fact: you can see Earth 42 Miles was suppose to be Spider-Man but just as the spider was about to bite him, it got teleported to an other Earth, creating world with no Spider-Man AND making a Miles Morales a Spider-Man
This review is one of the best I’ve seen yet.. and I’ve l watched a few reviews because I’m looking for someone to help me articulate how great this movie is. The second half where you talk about spot and Miguel as opposite points to each other is so clever and tied together the themes even more tightly. And the last bit about hobi and how anti establishment this movie is really speaks to how unique a spider person movie this is because the Spider-Man movies are also fairly pro establishment with spidery as an exception. Whereas this one feel like it’s saying no, we can follow our moral compasses and see the problems here and actually step away from something that is forcing me to stray from my morality (like captain stacey)

I'm literally addicted to this movie. I'm telling every person I remotely interact with to watch the previous one if they haven't seen it and then come by to watch this just as an excuse to see it again myself. It's a first movie I've went to cinema twice and the only reason it's only twice is that I watched it for the first time at the end of its runtime in theaters.
I feel like Across the Spider-Verse is more of an introduction, to the next film which is gonna be even more legendary!

Also to add, Gwen is scared to open up ever since Peter's death.
As we can see from Gwen's backstory, the color palette's tells the story of her emotions clashing. It's dim, it's moody, it's depressing.
It brights calmly and beautifully up when she opened up to her Father.
It's clear that she's emotionally shut off, not letting anyone get close to her. Very first friend she made was Miles. Not wanting to make the same mistake she did, instead of doing nothing. She decided to do something.
Looking forward for the continuation of their development on the next movie
Add to this how Miguel tells her the police captain, her dad, is doomed to die. She feels like anyone who loves her is doomed to die
