Lyrics:
I grew up with reverence for the red white and blue
Spoke of God and liberty reciting the pledge of allegiance
Learned love of country from my own family
Some shivered and prayed approaching the beaches of Normandy
The flag waves high and that's how it should be
So many lives given and taken in the name of freedom
But the story is complicated and hard to read
Pages of the book obscured or torn out completely
I am a son of uncle Sam and I struggle to understand the good and evil
But I'm doing the best I can in a place built on stolen land with stolen people
Blood in the soil with the cotton and tobacco
Blood in the soil with the cotton and tobacco
Blood in the soil with the cotton and tobacco
A misnamed people and a kidnapped race
Laws may change but we can't erase the scares of the nation
Of children devalued and disavowed
Displaced by greed and the arrogance of manifest destiny
Short-sighted to say it was a long time ago
Not even two life times have passed since the days of Lincoln
The sins of Andrew Jackson, the shame of Jim crow
And time moves slow when the tragedies are beyond description
I am a son of uncle Sam and I struggle to understand the good and evil
But I'm doing the best I can in a place built on stolen land with stolen people
We are more than the sum of our parts
All these broken homes and broken hearts
God will you keep us wherever we go
Will you forgive us for where we've been?
We Americans
Blood on the table with the coffee and the sugar
Blood on the table with the coffee and the sugar
Blood on the table with the coffee and the sugar
I've been to every state and seen shore to shore the still open wounds of the Civil War
Washed blind hatred bounce back and forth seen vile prejudice both in the south and the north
And accountability is hard to impose of ghosts of ancestors haunting the halls of our conscious
But the path of grace and good will is still here
For those of us who may be considered among the living
I am a son of God and man and I may never understand the good and evil
But I dearly love this land because of this and in spite of We The People
We are more than the sum of our parts
All these broken bones and broken hearts
God will you keep us wherever we go
Can you forgive us for where we've been?
We Americans
We Americans
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory

I had the honor to edit this and do the visual effects for it, too, using paintings by Jason Mitcham (who did Head Full of Doubt). I was so intimidated by the responsibility of doing this song and its lyrics the justice they deserve. I had never felt so inadequate for a music video job (and I've done some big ones). Thank you Mike (director) for the chance and Avett Brothers for expressing our thoughts and feelings in such a beautifully poetic way.
Thank you for doing such a great job on this video.
Thank you. Great Job , folks!
It was perfect! You did an awesome job. Loved the way the drawings "got drawn" or appeared and how they related to the lyrics and the feelings.
I knew the video reminded me of Head of Full of Doubt video. Very well done.
Nice job!!!
If the Avett Brothers don't play at my funeral, I'm not coming.
LOL!!
Best statement on this whole thread!!
I think any real Avett Brothers fan has at least one song picked out to be played at their funeral.

I am a Veteran and this is a wonderful song. Thanks fellas. Brother Jim
Literally, every nation has blood in its soil.
Honestly there hasn’t been a time we needed the Avett Brothers more
Who’s ready for the Gleam III?!?
Everyone. Everyone is ready for it.
Colin Goodwin who isn’t
Thank you for the music.
Hell yeah!
You boys spell it out like no other! Avett brothers are a voice for peace and honesty! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I am 59 years old... I love this song as much as it is to swallow..I understand we have to learn from the past and grow.WE CANNOT GROW WITHOUT CHANGE.✌️
I wish more Americans shared your values, the world would truly be better because of it. History has shown without doubt that a culture unable or unwilling to evolve faces tough times.
at first, my own self-righteousness made me have a negative taste for this song. However, after listening to it several times...the story is true and deep. we are all one America and we must learn to live and love all... I also Loved the video editing top notch
That is exactly what it was for me too. I thought it was pretentious the first time I heard it. But that was all just my own personal shit making me feel that way instead.
I am 64 years old and understand. The song gives me hope. There can be power in music and art .... a way to convey tough ideas.
"I dearly love this land because of and in spite of We the People."
This song exemplifies the difference between patriotism and nationalism. I love my country because I love the people that live there and the values those people hold dear. I believe in and cherish the people, not any single symbol meant to represent the USA. This song is a modern national anthem.
Matt Wester Yes!
"A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.” - Ed Abbey
Avett bros full of shit anymore. So so sad. They are selling out
@@hopelove6658 Haha, selling out to who? They have lost a sizable portion of their audience simply because they speak their actual mind on these issues. They are basically saying, "If you don't like it, don't listen". So what are you doing here? If you can't handle the fact that people can love this country and still find fault with it, you're just a simpleton.
@ladywharton glad you stand with me. We see the truth. These sell outs need to be called out and revealed for what they are truly ushering in under the guise of love and peace. They know EXACTLY what theyvare doing. For those of us that adored them at one time it is a slap in the face. Youre either with us or against us and they are now against.
Canadian here. I think this is the best poem I've ever heard. Someone should be sending this to your president.
Hopefully that idiot won't be our president much longer anyway!
he wouldn't get it, sad to say.
Canadian here as well.
When I first heard the song several months ago, right away I thought it was a very important song. Even more so now. Good luck to our neighbours. May peace come to your land soon...
Namaste.
This song, as well as so many other Avett numbers, are becoming more relevant every day. The true testament to incredible songwriting and a cry for what the world truly needs right now.
IMHO Their Strongest song. They are honestly tormented by some of the events and history of their beloved country. How sad for so many good folks in the USA...
Lol. What?
Love the way Christ meant it...too much judgement...from flawed people...yikes
@@patgenier1965 no...they are selling out to the liberal media
@@patgenier1965 The country is being sold out from under you. Like him or not Trump is the only political figure except for Ross Perot to step up and tell the truth about this. The whole political class cares only about Getting Their Cut.
Patriotism defined properly.
very poorly*
When I first listened to this album I kind’ve passed over this song without much thought. But hearing it again within the context of everything going on, and seeing it paired with the beautiful video... it’s really great.
This is the one I've listened to more than the others🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
America is a country of building good and learning from mistakes. No great nation has ever existed without great mistakes. History is painful. It is however an opportunity to learn and grow, this will make us the greatest nation on the planet. Trying to remove history only puts us in a position to repeat those tough times we are sickened by. Be a builder not a destroyer, encourage others to unite not divide, that's where our power as people can do unimaginably great things. LOVE!
Very well said. Wish our people were taught a wider range of history in school. Not excluding our tarnished past, but including every other countries/peoples faults as well. It can teach a lesson of the darker, and lighter sides of mankind for sure
Amen brother, with great power comes greater responsibility. Peace
Just Not waving the confederate flag!!
Great message, J Merica. Thank you.
this song is divisive and incredibly ignorant
"a place built on stolen land with stolen people"
Truth can be hard to hear. But it's better to build on truth than to build on lies.
every land is stolen its incredibly ignorant to say we stole the land native americn tribes stole the land from other native american tribe and they are to ignorant to write about that
This is so beautifully written, beautifully sang and beautifully illustrated. Thank you Avett Brothers for reminding us of the clarity and truth that music can bring.
Can't help but feel that we are currently watching and listening to one of the most impressive group of artists and musicians in history. I feel lucky to be alive and a fan while this art and these songs are being created and released for our sanity.
Sounds like something I said myself John, thanks brother😊
They are my "stuck on a deserted island and can only listen to one musician for the rest of your life" band.
"Blood in the soil with the cotton and tobacco" floors me every time.
i also love the table/coffee/sugar line. as if moved to an acceptable level? 💙 i am Southern.
Yes people from the north like to play what aboutism but they participated in the slave trade too just freed them earlier and even then it was largely economic rather than moral.
@@Rdasboss times have not changed. money made off the immigrants and the poor
All the profits from cotton in the South went up in smoke in the Civil War. The Yankee Traders who got rich off their end got richer off the war and then controlled the capitalization of the western expansion with the railroads. And the "hero" generals of the Union Army in the Civil War went west and inflicted the same terror tactics they used on the southern civilians on the Indians. "History" is a curious thing.
the poetic words are so intense, and no blame or fingers pointed, just thought provoking lyrics that spell the need for LOVE. Thanks
uh... "no blame or fingers pointed"?? did you even listen to the song? how do you hear lyrics such as "the sins of Andrew Jackson, the shame of Jim crow" and your only takeaway from such an explicitly political song is "love" lmao
herp derp was thinking the same thing. I mean I agree with who he’s pointing at. But yeah he pouting
Nathan Franklin Andrew Jackson was a Great American.
@@gingerhodgkins7530 So you're saying there was good in Jim Crow? Tom T. Hall's take is unmatched: "God bless little children, while they're still too young to hate."
God forgives, it's people who refuse to. One of the lessons of forgiveness is that when you do forgive you become free. But so many refuse to let us be free. They are chained to the past by anger, hatred, and an inability to forgive, forget, and move on. Personally, I don't know if forgetting is good, but I know forgiving and moving on is. I don't trust anyone who can't, or won't. There is freedom and prosperity for everyone when we let the past die and begin to live in today. But, when that happens, so many people will lose their power that comes from a divided America.
A Carpenter's Son One hundred thumbs UP
I am not an American, yet I love how this song had to bring up the painful past to acknowledge what is going on with America, yet being hopeful about the future. When you had come a long way, what would you give and not give to keep it going?
What a sensitive and beautiful song. The avett brothers are an American treasure!!!
Dayum!! For a minute, I thought I was watching something from the '60's....
Thanks guys. And to the magic that happens at Centrifugal Productions, too. I, and Love, and You.
Everytime I hear a Avett Brother song I have the urge to learn the banjo, grow a beard and write a hit song titled, "Alone in a Crowd"
Do it!!!!!
What is there to stop you?
Don't let your dream die 🎶
I learned banjo because of Scott and it’s actually really fun! You should try
You mean you can both love your country AND come to terms with some of the horrible things our forefathers did? What a novel idea.
Poetically put, thank you.
you said it!!
I guess I needed a good cry, today. Thank you for the stunningly beautiful words, Avett Bros.
Its a fleeting moment but start at 4:00 GRACE..... FORGIVENESS we have forgotten forgiveness as a nation. Good thing to remember right now.
"In Western Christian theology, grace is "the love and mercy given to us by God because God desires us to have it, not necessarily because of anything we have done to earn it""
All I can say is "thank you".
my heart is full. words and thoughts i did not know how to express, in 623
Thank you for expressing what so many of us feel.
to bring this country people must accept we meet in the middle, not at the far ends
My new personal national anthem! Thank you for sharing this song with our broken nation!
I can't even say how much I love this! 💖
Thanks guys!
Blood in the soil with the cotton And tobacco y’all how could they know and we just got
Rid of our state flag
This is one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. Poignant, beautiful, heart-wrenching, and hopeful. The Avett Brothers affirm their place as poetic masters of song and relevance. Americans need to hear this message now more than ever. God bless America and God bless the Avetts!
have you ever seen a more perfect, powerful music video
Thank you for being so honest and transparent.
I would love to see this run regularly on TV as a PSA, not associated with any candidate or party. Just getting people to feel and think. What's really important.
as opposed to "there was a dream..." which I hear every day on that commercial during CNN broadcasts
its incredibly divisive
@sgtcrusher66 ... Sadly, our divisions have never been as stark in my lifetime. Songs are reflective, not the cause.
making the statement that we live on stolen lands is [devisive and IGNORANT] every land on the face of the earth is stolen if you want to use that term @@whitecrow1949
I love you A. Bros and have been a fan for several years. I’ll continue to listen to your CDs over and over and over.
That said, when we bring up wrongs committed in the building of this country out of the context of the time they were done, it's disingenuous contemplation. There's no sense sifting yesterday's events through today's standards/morals/understanding. Waste of time and the rumination of ex post facto fanatics.
SO let's talk a moment about the misdeeds of NOW. Let's talk about a government where power-hungry governors who had been waiting in the wings to devour the freedoms of their populace claimed it was for "the greater good" to close tens of thousands of small businesses (all of which were the product of blood and sweat; some for generations) while NOT ONE SINGLE government worker was furloughed - - START THERE. Re-read that past sentence for thorough contemplation.
Moreover, it sickens me that our media fails to mention that; fails to decry to loss of all the freedoms we’ve been told to set aside AND they too have chosen to stop being news outlets in lieu of being correct-speak mouthpieces for one side of every argument. These people aren’t journalists, they are TOOLS of a corrupt government where only one side is allowed on any controversy and, unlike the true radicals of the late 1960’s these tools are promoting everything they’ve been told and not taking a moment to think it through. “Question Authority” is now an antique in the lost world of formerly ubiquitous concepts.
AND don't fool yourself into believing it’s gonna be ok to continue feeling comfortable criticizing the CURRENT government, now that socialists and marxists (NO - it's not worthy of being capitalized) are getting to have their way. They're NOT havin’ that, in case you had not taken notice. You'll be censored and marginalized to extinction quicker than you can see "don't take away my freedom."
As for my fellow Americans who have nothing but words of condemnation for our country - take a moment to pull your head out and consider just HOW difficult living conditions are in other countries; countries with next-to-no health care whatsoever; without consistent food & water, sanitation, opportunities and hopes.
People who would give whatever they had to live here.
While all you can do is find fault with this country.
Thank you
The New National Anthem. This song incorporates everyone In America with understanding Of the past and a light for the future. Listen to the words they will resonate with you. “Love in our hearts with the pain in the memory”

Together we stand...
Thank you for your words, we need them now.
I've never heard of this song. Rosanne Cash, who I follow on twitter, tweeted a couple of weeks ago that she was listening to this song on a loop, over and over again. So I thought I'd listen. I had no idea it would impact me the way it has. The lyrics are so incredibly profound....
A very thoughtful, and thought provoking piece of music. A beautiful challenge to the people of your country. It seems that all nations, like the humanities that inhabit them are both great and guilty. Maybe we are evolving into a better species, with the help of God in each other. Nice to hear music being soft and hard, pretty and painful, and political. I am not an American, I am a northern neighbor, saddened and encouraged by the struggles I see daily occurring in your country. Peace
Love.
Absolutely brilliant. Thank you to all involved for this beautiful, spot-on, song.
This was my favorite song from the album when it dropped and I listened to it a lot at that time but I haven’t heard it in several months and had forgotten about it. Thank you for bringing it back to me when I really needed it with this beautiful video.

dont turn your head on us and ill love you forever..and i think there is a good chance that everyone else will too..nobody is perfect but we are all here doing all we can to be holy and respectful to who came before and them on their way..good brings good as far as i can tell..good comes in all shades i think
I'm all for replacing the national anthem at every event, with this song.
Line forms right over here to give up your racist electricity and your genocidal plumbing.
While you wallow and lick your wounds, pick up some history books and start reading history. I recommend Everything I Didn’t Learn about the Civil War. The terrific battle regarding slavery right from the get go of creating States. A terrible struggle. World War II. Read read read. There is no other answer to replace all the garbage you’ve learned in school.

Blood in the soil and on the table but love in our hearts. My family and I will continue to be the new sprout and leaf. No doubt our roots touch blood the blood of our brothers and sisters. I would rather have them back and never been destroyed over this land which we must continue to fight for in honor of the dream of peace and love and unity and prosperity for all. The art is amazing!
One must appreciate the great subtley of this song. It's so subtle I'm not even sure I know what the message is.
Just beautiful.
Thank you for this honesty!
I was supposed to see them at red rocks this summer and it was canceled 😔 so bummed. But that does not mean I cant listen to all of their songs over and over again. Love them💖
Same here. I was supposed to see them here in Montana, and then drive down to see them, the third night at Red Rocks. So sad. There is hopefully next year.
Beautiful!
I listen to videos on UA-cam while working from home. Rarely, does the lyrics stop me in my tracks. This song demanded I stop and listen. Well done. Very well done.
".... the arrogance of manifest destiny "
When we learned about manifest destiny in middle school, I knew immediately it was self-righteous bullshit.
46 years ago, I couldn't express that without backlash. Thank god we've matured in at least some respects. We still have a looong way to go
We haven’t matured in the least in that regard.
The people who disliked this video should be ashamed of themselves. I love this song so much and I want to say thank you to the Avett Brothers for making such amazing music🙏
Damn that's deep!!
The artwork is beautiful and is a great counterpart to the words in this song ❤️
Beautiful.
Hurts my soul that this song doesn't have 100 times more views. Those of us who feel this have a lot of work to do as we are up against the zombies.
I cried listening to this.
I have listened to this song 3 times already and still cry every time. Happy Fourth everybody

I absolutely love this song. Brings me to tears.
As if I couldn't already love these guys a ton, I love them even more for sharing this profound truth and hard yet hopeful place of this country with current and past events. Thank you for this truth ❤
