Do you need to have a canbus hooked to them or is it built into the headlight itself to prevent flickering?

No issues with flickering. Shouldn’t need to install anything else but the lights.

If I don't want the turning signal, how do I hook up the dl only?

You can just leave the connector for the turn disconnected. They don’t have both to be connected to work.
