    The thing with Scotch though is that these days the regions don't really matter as much as they used to. You can get unpeated sherried Islay scotch, and likewise find peated Highland or Speyside. I break scotch down more by flavor profiles and cask types.

    I disagree about the Norlan Glass. Is it pricey, yes but it works equivalent to a Glencairn. It’s more about personal preference and what kind of glassware looks more appealing. I think they look stunning and the ability to grip it like a tumbler is actually nice. My subjective take is the Glencairn looks pretentious in some circumstances and it doesn’t fit with my personal style.
    I do find it weird that you call it a gimmick because Bruichladdich endorsed the Norlan heavily when it was created. Overall though a good whiskey glass is the one you like to drink it from.

      @@TheWhiskeyDictionary so, ever since i asked you about woodford reserve i have tried: glenfiddich 12, makers mark, wild turkey 101, jack daniels (old edition or something, it had 43% alcohol), evan williams extra aged. I would say i liked woodford reserve and makers mark (i liled it because i think falls between the heavy flavor profile of evan williams and fruitiness of scotch single malts). Wild turkey 101 i just can't drink it without water, the alcohol content is too high for my palate.

    Excellent video for the down to earth, sensible advice.
    A question : do experts like you actually do a lot of sniffing of honey, vanilla, fruits collection( fruity), dark chocolate, leather, spices ( which ones?),smoke, oak wood etc etc so that you can build up a "smell library" to help you identify the flavour components in a whisky you're nosing ?
    How do you build up a taste library? Do you actually chew inedible stuff like oakwood, for example so that you can identify it in the tasting?
    Finally, am I the first one to ask such a silly question!?

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Karnal! First off, nope you're not the first one to ask that question and it's not silly. Honestly, it's exactly what i do. I buy different types of lemons, smell vanilla in different stages (bean, mexican vanilla extract, cheapo vanilla extract), smell all different kinds of fruits.
      It's hard to remember what everything smells like but most of it ties to memories and that's how i try to recall what I'm smelling.

    I have a couple of questions about bourbon please.
    1) What makes the flavor profile besides mash bill and the type of oak of the barrel?
    2) Many talk about tasting fruits, caramel, brown sugar...etc. Do distillers actually add such flavors?

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  4 роки тому

      1. 99% of the flavor comes from the mashbill and the oak. There's a minute bit of mouthfeel imparted by the type of water that's used (hard water, soft water). But it's a combination of the distillate, where in the "cut" they take the evaporating alcohol, and the barrels.
      2. Nope, in order to call something whiskey it needs to be 40% ABV (at least) and it can't have any additional additives. Some countries allow for artificial coloring which is used to keep the product looking the same across bottles.
      Great questions!

    this kind of late for this video but what does rye whiskey taste like? what can one expect toget out of it?

  • @liamb6812
    @liamb6812 4 роки тому +1

    That’s a big promise. What’s the square root of 4761? Also why is Canadian whiskey more expensive in Canada than it is in America, despite it usually being made in Canada?

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  4 роки тому +2

      Would you believe me if I said I knew it was 69 before looking it up? I also love that you probably memorized that in highschool and it's served you well for years!
      My understanding of the price differences in Canada has to do with how heavily regulated by the government it is, but to be honest, I'm not totally sure. I've made a note to try to address that in an upcoming video I'll be doing on Canadian whisky.

    I started drinking whiskey about 3months ago. So far I think I prefer sweet, Can you or anybody recommend me a really sweet and good whiskey? So far I like Buffalo Trace,Wfr double oaked and I love eagle rare

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  4 роки тому +2

      I'd suggest going for something like a high corn bourbon or a wheated bourbon. I find that wheated bourbons are some of the more enjoyable "easy to sip" whiskies. Things like Larceny, Maker's Mark. Additionally, Auchentoshan Three Wood or Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or

    Saying "there is no wrong way to drink whiskey" is like saying "there is no wrong way to eat a steak". You can eat your steak with ketchup if you want. But if you want to get the most out of the experience there's ways to do it that others have figured out for you.

    I've been watching your channel for a long time. I'd like to think I'm not a total beginner but I still got a lot out of this vid. Great idea for a topic! Love the backdrop for this video. Here's my question. I have a good set of rocks glasses. If I'm not as much into the nosing as the actual drinking should I still seek out a glencairn or am I ok sipping my best bourbon from my rocks glass? Thank you!!

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  4 роки тому +1

      If you're just drinking bourbon, and you're not really that into nosing, then you're totally fine with rocks glasses. That being said, you owe it to yourself to get one or two Glencairns.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary

      I find there is such an effect, long had those issues myself however since drinking whisky it’s only there today to a lesser extent and very much reduced in volume. There’s a YT video called ‘The Real Reason Whiskey Is Healthier Than Any Other Drink’ mentioning it there briefly, a tongue-in-cheek clip for sure but it does seem to be the case about the health and medical benefits of whisky.
