If you can only purchase one of the small 12v steam goods train sets, which one should it be? This video is an overview of both freight trains with a steam engine from the 1980s, 7730 Electric Goods Train and 7727 Freight Steam Train, and ultimately a comparison for buyers.

On bricklink 7730 also has the yellow cones with the axle hole part 3943b as alternate items which makes it easier to part the set together as they are more common and often in better condition but probably don't look as good on this set as the cones without axle holes.
Yep the ones with axle holes did originally come in some copies. If you check the inventory log you'll see a lot of work done by another collector (SezaR) investigating these cones!
7727 was my first Lego Train, which I got to christmas at some point in the 80's. Until today it is my most favourite Lego set. And I even like the alternative train you can build from it.
It is quite easy to upgrade 7727 with lights. You just have to turn the slopes between the lights by 90° to the outside. Then you already have enough space for the prism.
Yep!
Must... not... spend... money...
I'll push you over that edge with Layout 14 >:)
Two lovely sets! I wish lego's modern train stuff didn't have such a Giant battery, makes small non tender engine builds basically impossible. How strong are these old girls? Can they only haul the three cars they came with?
Yep, love the old 12V engines! They're pretty strong, they can pull at least another two short wagons easily.
Very good comparison, though I would choose 7727 over 7730 because of the smoother looking locomotive and boxcar. To be honest 7727 boxcar would have to be my favourite short wagon from 12v grey era.
Thanks! I do like the loc and boxcar of 7727 more as well, and it's also one of my favorite short wagons of the era, next to 7813 and the wagon from 7823.
Nice comparison, looking at getting 1 of the sets my self.
Which one are you leaning towards?
@@Reker1million I would say 7727 but I see that 7730 is easier to get hold of in my area.
I like the 7727 better but bought the 7730 because I found it for €20,00. But I still want to get the 7727.
7730 for 20??? Where did you find that?
@@Reker1million on the Dutch site marktplaats people can sell anything at that side and you can see everything that get paced in the Nederlands.
Yeah I know marktplaats, but 20 euros... man
❤
Great comparison, I'm trying to figure out which model I had as a kid, is it possible there was a 3rd version available in 12V? I remember the black steering wheel on the locomotive in 7730 and the white wagon, but I'm leaning towards 7727 as the model I had. Old memories are so unreliable!
There were no other official small 12V steam engines but there was an alternate model for 7730's engine and a few engines with red motors in 7777. These are not common though, 95+% of all the small steam engines I've seen for sale or in childhood photos are 7727 or 7730's A models. There were also some 4.5V and push trains with red bases, but they didn't have motors.
Nice examples there, 7727 seems harder to get than 7730
Thanks! Without the box they're about the same but if you want a good box 7727 is definitely harder to find.
I have the 7727 with the box. Mum bought it for me 30 plus years ago. Still goes strong and I am never parting with it.
