Yeah the line between comedy and tragedy is indeed thin. But not just comedy, all creative types, Music Art, Comedy they're all tortured and messed up. That's why we relate 🤔😶😉
That's true Geof, I think that's what fuels their creativity...the ones in the public eye have it the worst though, I believe, cause when it's time to "go on", they have to, regardless of how they're REALLY feeling...imagine being terribly sad n you've got to start filming, so you have to go out there n act as funny n happy as you possibly can...when the filming stops, I think I would be sadder than ever....n I think they feel like they have to be "on" all the time also n that would suck...going out to eat or to the club n STILL feeling as if you can't be your true normal self, cause hey, they gotta be "on" ALL the time, right?!?! I couldn't do it....
@@foxxybrown7606 Judy Garland, Liza Minelli, Van Gogh, Mozart, very troubled people but on the edge of madness lies genius. I notice it's mostly the really intelligent ones. Billie Connolly is another , Andy Kaufman who Jim Carry played. Lots of suicide amongst these types too. True tragedy.
Mr. Carrey could sing anything and I’ll probably cry. His comedy has been like a friend to me and my friends. His acting has carved my best friends and I’s relationship. Love to see this man’s work on anything he does.
LMFAO! Kurt Cobain would've probably paid to see that, hahah! He loved to butcher his own music(especially "Smells"), watching someone else do it would have put a smile on his face no doubt.
The irony is: George Martin (Beatles producer) put out an album near the end of his life -- I *think* it was called "In My Life" -- which featured people he admired performing songs of the Beatles, and Jim Carrey's "I Am the Walrus" made me really double-take. It was an absolutely stand-out track, and formerly I barely had any idea he could even carry a tune. He absolutely *nailed* that song, and not only did he completely make it his own, but I feel it holds up against the original version, believe it or not. Sure, he probably had limitless takes to perfect it, but the guy undoubtedly has pipes. (And I imagine Lennon had a few tries, himself.) Solely because of that track, I'll easily overlook this performance as a drunken and/or emotional one-off. The George Martin track is *very* much worth looking up. In fact (forgive me-- I never ask this), if anyone can upvote this comment so I can find it again, I'll do everything in my power to return with an edit that links to Jim's "I Am the Walrus," so you can hear for yourself. (Respect, Mr. Carrey, and R.I.P., Mr. Martin) Edit: I found the Walrus track with ease, and getting back here wasn't actually so hard after all, but I'm gonna leave my original post intact and just drop this off: ua-cam.com/video/M0Gz5zbGONk/v-deo.html

A big thing about Jim Carrey singing this, he knows his vocal limits, he drops his tone an octave lower, or at least tries, to keep singing without his voice completely breaking.
@@watzitoya5821 Thats kind of what i mean by he drops his voice by an octave (though i might be using the wrong terminology) so that it can still be 'correct', just in a different tone so it still sounds nice.
@@HereticFox An octave is when you sing in key the same note but much lower on the scale. You know how you can keep singing up until you end up singing the same note just much higher. The note you start at is an octave lower than the one you end up at. What I'm saying is that Jim here isn't singing an octave lower than the original song, he's actually singing mostly the same notes.
@@watzitoya5821 I'll agree on that! I was mostly commenting on when he goes high once or twice you can almost hear his voice crack, and then he drops it down so it doesnt, I guess as the prime example.
@@HereticFox I get you! We're in agreement. Yeah, his voice sorta cracks, it's a very hard song to sing and I agree he's actually managing his own range very well and adapting his voice to the song.
Heartbreaking...even though this video is 11 years old, you can feel his distress when he says " I'm a weirdo". Must be hard to live in the head of a genuis.
I keep coming back to this cover because I feel like the way Jim sings it is the way that it is meant to be sung. It's meant to feel messy and a little silly and stupid, because those are the emotions that Yorke was feeling when he wrote the song. The way that he belts out the chorus just feels perfect. Perfectly human. Love this with all my soul
I’m a former actor (failed lol!) but I always say: Every dramatic actor cannot necessarily do comedy-but every single great comedic actor can do drama. Beautiful performance of the song, Jim!
Agreed - apart from Leslie Nielson, I can't think of many actors who successfully transitioned from drama to comedy. Yeah, the fact dramatic films have more pay and prestige probably helps, but you'd think it would still happen every so often, right? I reckon it's because in order to be a good comedian, you need to have an understanding of what makes people laugh, what makes people tick, have empathy.Which is also why I reckon that a lot of edgelord and hard right comedy falls flat - laughing at other people because they disgust you only goes so far...

The fact that he can sing it well, and still feels he has to clown... is it because he's so immersed in being silly, comical that it just comes, or is it his shield from the world, and he felt too vulnerable without it? Couple moments in there I felt like he showed more than he wanted to....
he just hides his true persona, he is scared of showing sad emotions. its a memorized mechanism. i have the same shit .... when something bad happens in my life i literally smile with my eyes looking empty, or i say a joke.... its a terror bcuz many ppl dont realize its a defensive mechanism

It's that same quality that makes him an incredible actor and comedian but never quite trusting of his own identity due to everyones expectation of him. Very much like Robin Williams
I love randomly coming across gems like these once in a while. Some good ones don’t need to be viral. Our kids’ kids will probably never know who Jim is, but they’ll have their own heroes that they reminisce about as they get older.
This is LITERALLY my favorite cover of this song. Mainly because you can tell how much fun he is having and how good the energy is. You don’t need a perfect voice to be a singer. I’ve seen professional bands tank because their energy was off and they weren’t having fun with it. Protect this man at all cost!
Just realised Jim Carrey could've totally played Phoenix's Joker. He actually has great drama acting range and can do amazing facial tics. This is a man who could play a great many characters with remarkable depth... but he just doesn't like doing them for some reason.
He could and he should. Maybe it's because he won't or that he just doesn't get cast? He is my favourite actor by a landslide, but he is so unique that he's basically created his own genre, which might make it tricky for directors to "take a chance" on him...
Ha ha. I wasn't aware of the sex change. :-P But Ihope Jim Carrey doesn't kill himself..really...It will be like losing a very old childhood friend that you somehow grew distant from a long time ago.
Jim has lived an extraordinary life and really made something of it. I don't know the guy but I'm proud that he is part of the collective one that we're all part of. I believe he sees life as some crazy trip and he's put his all into trying to be his best version. He's done a better job than me so for that he's an inspiration.
Robin Williams comes to mind...

@@patrickgalban1110 - - so fucking what?? Fucking awesome!! Do you really need to be music critic, a review of his cover song.
Very disturbing he was not in a good place at this time in his life 💔 😔
Yeah he's not a trained singer, but he's obviously working through something here. Have you never sucked at karaoke before?
(And I imagine Lennon had a few tries, himself.)
Solely because of that track, I'll easily overlook this performance as a drunken and/or emotional one-off.
Martin)
Edit: I found the Walrus track with ease, and getting back here wasn't actually so hard after all, but I'm gonna leave my original post intact and just drop this off:

Lol i’m just here for the jokes.
A big thing about Jim Carrey singing this, he knows his vocal limits, he drops his tone an octave lower, or at least tries, to keep singing without his voice completely breaking.
Except for most of the song he's singing the same notes as the original and in pitch (or close to)
@@watzitoya5821 Thats kind of what i mean by he drops his voice by an octave (though i might be using the wrong terminology) so that it can still be 'correct', just in a different tone so it still sounds nice.

Love this with all my soul
absolutly NO pitch correction. Absolutly human and perfect music
It works because you believe him, doesn't matter that he's off key, it's the delivery

It works especially because he’s playing to be off key

With every passing year this video gets sadder and sadder

This song came out in the 90's....1992 to be exact 🙄
The fact that he can sing it well, and still feels he has to clown... is it because he's so immersed in being silly, comical that it just comes, or is it his shield from the world, and he felt too vulnerable without it? Couple moments in there I felt like he showed more than he wanted to....
Felt that
he just hides his true persona, he is scared of showing sad emotions. its a memorized mechanism. i have the same shit .... when something bad happens in my life i literally smile with my eyes looking empty, or i say a joke.... its a terror bcuz many ppl dont realize its a defensive mechanism
@@ImotekhtheStormlord-tx2it yeah.... I hide behind a guitar, I can barely socialize with anyone beyond intimate friends, but a guitar is like a mask for me, I don't feel like the same person , I'm always confident in most things, I just become "flat" if I don't have something to do constantly, think too hard. plus the feedback from a crowd amps me up I suppose. Later I'm so depressed, I can barely function for a day. Life was a lot simpler back home, everything makes me miss a farm I couldn't wait to put behind me.
It's that same quality that makes him an incredible actor and comedian but never quite trusting of his own identity due to everyones expectation of him. Very much like Robin Williams
Comedy is a mask for pain. Always.
Also such a clean band and creative! Who are they?? Like them better than the Vampires.
Just realised Jim Carrey could've totally played Phoenix's Joker. He actually has great drama acting range and can do amazing facial tics.
This is a man who could play a great many characters with remarkable depth... but he just doesn't like doing them for some reason.
holy shit why is that so true
well when he does them he goes off the rails a tad
He could and he should. Maybe it's because he won't or that he just doesn't get cast? He is my favourite actor by a landslide, but he is so unique that he's basically created his own genre, which might make it tricky for directors to "take a chance" on him...
Have you seen "Man in the Moon" or "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind??" He can absolutely do drama
i agree, his job on the mask movie was amazing, imagine him as the joker. im pretty sure he did act in a batman movie
I feel like this was part of the sequel to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind after Kate Winslet broke his heart again.
