Not gonna lie. When I watched the video for the first time, I noticed he didn't research the topic. He missed out on so many key moments in the Godzilla franchise and blamed the goody nature of the Monsterverse on the US. Yes, the Monsterverse is goofy, no one can't deny that. Skipper's comment about the US military was also kind of befuddling. While I won't pretend like there isn't any military industrial complex propaganda in Hollywood films, I barely seen any in the Monsterverse. 9 times out of 10, the US military is presented as a bunch of bumbling idiots that just get in Godzilla's way and make things worse. At best, they occasionally irritate or distract the antagonist Kaiju, usually getting decimated in the process. Which, by the way, is exactly what happened to the Japanese military in the original films!

You made a ton of good points in this video, and it’s a shame to see other people like this crap on the American movies when each movie is targeted towards different audiences. It’s nice to see someone defending the American movies and less serious and dark movies, because all Godzilla movies are good in their own way.
To be fair, the monsterverse actually DOES have meaning. Based mostly off of KOTM, Godzilla is representative of the hope humanity has against it’s own destruction through global warming, although it is lost to a degree in that movie. Every godzilla has a meaning and represents something, which is what makes him beautiful as a character and a franchise
I argue he's more of a representative of nature and how nature can fix it's own problems and we don't have to intervene which is a lesson everyone has to learn Don't fight Godzilla Don't fight who he's fighting As the saying from 2014 goes "let them fight"
I don't support gatekeeping, but casuals like skipper who are clearly not fans of godzilla (both before and possibly after seeing minus 1) acting like they know the entire franchise/character based off minus 1 and gojira alone (while simultaneously ignoring the rest of the franchise) make it so easy to possibly gatekeep them or tell them how flawed their logic is. It's fine for casuals to like minus 1 but i hate how it brought out people trying to act like they know godzilla's character better than fans do. It's arguably more annoying than toho purist knowing godzilla is a versatile character but insisting only Japan should do godzilla despite toho was open to Hollywood doing godzilla at any given opportunity since 1983

If it did that for 70 years it was just get stale so it’s nice that the franchise has actual variety. It’s not perfect but it’s not bad and it’s still enjoyable.
I’ve seen all live action Godzilla movies. And the MV hate is completely unjustified and hypocritical. People who hate on it only bring up Shin Godzilla, the original, and Minus One. They completely forget that the MV takes a lot of elements from the Showa and Heisei era. And that Toho themselves have done so many different things with the character. MV has brought in so many new fans to the franchise (including myself), while paying respects to the IP and the character. What more could you ask for from Godzilla movies?

If find it friggin hilarious that 90% of said reviewers will usually throw crap at Doug Walker for his style of reviews just being whiny nitpicking recaps of the movie. That either misinterpret plot points, or just flat out get details wrong. Even though that’s exactly what they do!
Bro, Godzilla being public domain? They gotta pay for a separate contract just to use any individual monster: It's not just not public domain, it's hyper regulated, and since 1999 Toho has become protective of their brand. That is a wild take
But you know who actually is public domain King Kong. But only because of a loop hole that the film’s novelization is public domain but not the actual film. But Universal is super protective of for that reason and will shut down any project fearing King if they deem it ‘infringing on their IP’. It’s part of the reason Kong is only referred to as Kong in the monsterverse
I see Dr Skippers points about Godzilla - originally an allegory for nuclear power and the danger and destruction that can come with it - and how he's been turned into a "Hero for kids". But. That's okay. Media evolves like Super Mando says. He's grown past his original reason for being and can be a vessel for many other stories
To answer your question, Firewood Media in his video clarified that only ONE SINGULAR image of Godzilla is public domain, and that's where him saying it is public domain came from.
YES! THANK YOU!!!!!! I'M NOT ALONE WHEN I NOTICE UA-cam REVIEWS TEAR DOWN THE OTHER GODZILLA FILMS TO PROP UP MINUS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, I just had so much pent up tension after seeing some many reviews that do that. Again, thank you. And subscribed.
I'm largely on the outside, my first experience of Godzilla was morning TV where he was literally a button-press win in every situation. And as for Godzuki? Well, less said the better. It wasn't till later I learned the larger context of the character, though I am by no stretch 'well-versed'. But _that's_ the thing. To me, Godzilla is a brand, you could get away with 'Godzilla on Ice', even in Japan, because the character can, indeed, be what you want it to be, depending on the audience, Godzilla can be everything from a kids party mascot to terrifying blood-vomiting monstrosity. And for Godzilla, that's a really really good thing, as you say that flexibility is what has helped the character survive for nearly three quarters of a century.
I’m a thirty two year old from England, I’ve loved Godzilla since around the age of eight. Granted the first American attempt at Godzilla wasn’t anything great but the Monsterverse is so fun! I remember when I was younger I’d be embarrassed to like Godzilla like it was a guilty pleasure but now it’s cool to. The franchise weather in Japan or in the States is great right now!
I don’t think people know that Godzilla now is intentionally a force of nature keeping anything that tries to disagree with Godzilla will face their doom but stand down and know their place in the food chain then they will live
I saw the title of Skippers' video and thought it was going to be horribly wrong but good Godzilla is he getting so much stuff wrong it almost feels deliberate like there's a punchline at the end where he reveals he was just goofing off the whole time. I hate it when people come off like they're experts on something and its painfully obvious they do not know what they are talking about. Good job covering this guy's terrible video.
To clarify, in regards to japanese ip, something becomes public domain 70 years after the creator has died. 3 people, tomoyuki Tanaka, Eiji tsuburaya, and ishiro Honda are credited as the creators of godzilla. The last of the 3 died in 97, meaning godzilla won't become public domain until 2067.
I don’t know what made that guy think Godzilla is in the public domain just because he’s appearing in some American produced films. Legendary has an established contract with Toho that allows Godzilla to be used by Legendary in their MonsterVerse films and graphic novels
I can only assume based of how copyright is meant to expire after a certain amount of time. But it’s not as simple as that because sometimes it’s ONLY character/film that’s public domain. Look at steamboat Willie only that version of Micky is public domain. Or an example within Kaiju genre, King Kong himself is public domain but not his original film. US copyright laws are complicated, and international ones are even more so.
2:24 I’d argue nearly the opposite. The story they had with Godzilla and the prime minister still hits to this day. Goofy parts of heisei are spacegodzilla and mothra. But I still get your point.
The only positive thing I have to say about Doctor Skipper’s video is that it brought the Godzilla community together so that we can all simultaneously gang up on his embarrassment of a video. Whenever I feel bad about myself, I just look at Doctor Skipper and say to myself “at least I’m not as dumb as he is” 😂
Some notes- the reason Godzilla went from a terrifying monster to a heroic monster has more to do with its director Ichiro Honda. He has stated, numerous times, that when he saw that Godzill was becoming more popular for children was to purposefully tone down the scarrier elements to keep the charactrr friendly to the children, but also maintaining a more adult storyline in the human side of the story. If course it was all cheesy fun, but there is some serious talent behind the camera and in the writing, even at its Showa era silliest. Godzilla didnt have much competition from TV until the mod to late 60's when Ultra Q, Ultraman, and Kamen Rider became popular. In fact the studio that made the Ultra series was founded by Eiji Tsubariya, who got his start in special effects working with Honda on films prior to Godzilla (Gojora). Toho as a studio in the 50's thru the 70's was far more well known for making serious samurai dramas and light hearted comedies. The kaiju and Godzilla films were popular, but they were far down the rankings in terms of numbers compared to their other films. It was mostly the love producer Tomoyuki Tanaka and Ichiro Honda had for sci fi and monster films in general that kept them being made. Believe it or not, Godzilla movies were originally seen as almost being protest movies and very much a part of a counter culture movement in Japan than mainstream movies. Big Action Bill here on UA-cam has an excellent break down history of each Godzilla movie and I highly recommend his videos if you really want to learn about the entire Godzilla franchise.
@SuperMandoLive very much so! I love that Godzilla just as much as the monster in -1. I think my favorite Godzilla films are the Millennium films, but to be honest, I'm more of a Gamera fan at heart. Great video response man, keep it up.
"The MUTOs are instantly vilified without any nuance" I guess he somehow missed the Female MUTO completely forgetting about Goji to go cry over her dead offspring. It’s almost like he didn’t watch the movie at all…
Lovely video. Short, concise, organized, and CALM. Skippers video was way too frantic for me to even digest what was happening. Although I do believe a small core of that video was right, it's so overshadowed by so much false information. Bless you.
I would also like to point out that MV Godzilla is NOT the “protector of humanity” like so many people are saying, he is the protector of EARTH and if humanity gets in his way he wouldn’t hesitate to kill us He isn’t teaming up with us in those movies, we are teaming up with him Just like they said “You want to make Godzilla our first pet?” “No we would be his”
Great summary of what everyone in his comments were retaliating with. The thing that irks me the most is that he said he hates Godzilla, so why make a video on something he doesn't care about to begin with? The whole thing crumbled from there.
Skipper also said that Harry O’hoyt’s creation of The Lost World inspired Willis O’Brien to make King Kong when O’Brien himself did the stop motion for The Lost World. He really got so much information wrong.
Just discovered your channel! Thank you for calling him out! It makes me sick how some people, like him, can claim to be a fan, but don't know anything about the character or acknowledge that we, the fans, are now in a new Golden Age of Godzilla! Getting content from both Toho & Legendary means that the G-Fans win! At the end of the day I would much rather get more Godzilla content instead of the crap Disney has spewed out with both MARVEL & Star Wars in recent years!
There’s no such thing as the “Original Godzilla essence” imo Each Gman incarnation has its own take That’s what has kept the franchise we all love alive Its ways to reinvent and adapt
I think its more like that theres no such thing as "a real godzilla" all iterations are equally good. There is still an original cause theres a start to everything
There's really only one reason I watch Godzilla movies. For a giant overpowered radioactive lizard to beat the snot out of whatever monster in his path. That's mostly it. If the story is good, then that's another reason to stay, but its mostly the kaiju fights. I know, I am very simple.
Most people that dislike the monster verse know nothing about Godzilla. I saw someone say, "they're humanizing Godzilla". Did they miss when Godzilla would do Judo throws, dance, and shake hands? 😂
1:22 one thing I have heard is that there’s a specific picture from the original Godzilla movie that is technically in the public domain due to complications with the renewal process. So that one specific image *is* public domain, but Godzilla as a character and the Godzilla movies as a whole are not public domain and never have been.
The moment I realized the guy skipped over the Heisei and Millennium series(both personal faves of mine), I knew Skipper had no idea what he was talking about
For something to go into public domain Either 50 years have past since the character has been introduced Or 20 years after the Owner dies (if the company doesnt sign something idk)
I think it’s weird that he tries to claim that the American Godzilla doesn’t represent anything when the whole film had all these themes about the arrogance of mankind, and that the whole point was that Godzilla represented the balance of nature. Godzilla‘s whole role in the film was to restore balance, whenever humanity disrupted it.
I should've did a double take when he said "I personally don't like Godzilla" when I watched that video. Honestly 90% of it was just Doktor Skipper droning on and on about "America Bad! MIC bad! War bad" like it was just a bunch of redundant "iam14andthisisdeep" truisms that can be applied to literally anything. But it is clearly a love letter to those old 60's Godzilla movies. And it's ok to have a cool Godzilla that fights monsters.

I argue he's more of a representative of nature and how nature can fix it's own problems and we don't have to intervene which is a lesson everyone has to learn
Don't fight Godzilla
Don't fight who he's fighting
As the saying from 2014 goes "let them fight"

Godzilla works on every country. Period.
Minus One earned 95.2 Million Pesos (around 5 millions USD) in Mexico.
US copyright laws are complicated, and international ones are even more so.
i always love when youtubers use other peoples arguments against themselves.

2:24 I’d argue nearly the opposite. The story they had with Godzilla and the prime minister still hits to this day. Goofy parts of heisei are spacegodzilla and mothra. But I still get your point.
It's mostly the time travel aspect of it that makes me consider it the goofiest movie of the Heisei era
I think the pink is a reference to Godzilla in “Godzilla VS Megaguirus”
If it was public domain, Kaiju Universe wouldn’t have gotten taken down
The only positive thing I have to say about Doctor Skipper’s video is that it brought the Godzilla community together so that we can all simultaneously gang up on his embarrassment of a video.
Thanks for the info, I always consider the mid to late 60s to be the goofiest in terms of showa era movies.

It's weird how skipper can be wrong about literally 98% of the stuff but I can't stand the monsterverse so i might agree with him on them being bad
For something to go into public domain
Either
50 years have past since the character has been introduced
Or
20 years after the Owner dies (if the company doesnt sign something idk)
I love Legendary Godzilla and I love Minus One, I just love Kaiju and monsters in media in general
All Monsters Attack or Godzilla's Revenge has a pollical message which is Bullying and kidnaping is bad
Don’t forget the best Godzilla movie Godzilla versus destroyer. This movie is the best kaiju movie I have ever seen.
Yet for some reason he found it profound just because it has to do with the US, completely ignoring the fact that every Godzilla movie/series doesn't need to have "deep social commentary."
"I kinda hate Godzilla."
*Proceeds to make the video about a topic he hates*
“America ruins godzilla” Stfu
Doktor Skipper needs to understand that without the monsterverse then Godzilla wouldn't have continued after 2004.
@@uhh345 fr
@@uhh345Yea the Monsterverse literally revived the Godzilla franchise. And didn't Toho say Godzilla final wars (2004) was gonna be the final Godzilla film?
Can we just enjoy both? It's really crazy that we're getting so much Godzilla content. And i love it!!!
this title seems like one of those "how to trigger a fanbase with one sentence" 💀
@@Ad1tputra Definitely, the success of the 2014 film saved the character from oblivion and is literally the reason why Shin Godzilla and Minus One exist today.
Gotta love the drama people have between a fictional character
