    Putting a limit on the length of a contract is restraint of trade. The objective of freeing up free agency would also go against the AFL's equalisation policy because the clubs at the pointy end would keep on topping up at the expense of clubs at the other end of the ladder. Kane would have a different opinion on this if it was Port getting bled dry by the big clubs.

    • @taliamason7986
      @taliamason7986 6 місяців тому +1

      Clubs at the pointy end already keep topping up at the expense of clubs down the bottom and have been doing so for years. Exactly what difference does it make.

    • @gustaaf1892
      @gustaaf1892 6 місяців тому

      @@taliamason7986 It would only get worse with shorter contracts. Free agency was pushed by the AFLPA, not by the AFL. The AFL knows it detracts from their equalisation objectives.

      @Geelongcats9090Harry Sheazel won the Rising Star, something JHF didn't do.
      Sheazel is an adequate replacement for JHF and North got Wardlaw as well, so North did really well out of it.
      You're just salty because Port has a Victorian coach who you South Australians hate, and you can't sack him.
      Your club's small mindedness of only wanting SA born coaches will keep you flag less for many years.

    How about a cap at 5yr contracts for players with triggers of 1-3yrs providing a player hits a certain criteria.
    It does away with these long term contract risks and issues and it specifically puts the working nouse back onto the player. If they want that long term contract to stick then they have to perform

    • @dhenderson1810
      @dhenderson1810 6 місяців тому +1

      People like Cornes want shorter term contracts for players so that they can speculate more about who they will go to when their contract runs out.
      Whenever the media suggest something, it is solely to give them things to talk about.

    • @ShadowLight-kn7rl
      @ShadowLight-kn7rl 6 місяців тому

      @@dhenderson1810 probably right. IMO I think shorter contracts sounds like the most logical spin on protecting clubs from players literally dropping the ball/standards on form. And that's why I think if ever there was to be any contract past 5yrs, then having the nessacary criteria to trigger the extension is the way to go. It not only rewards players form with their long term contract and security, but it also protects clubs. Granted the only real side effect is that injuries could make alot of grey area on this but maybe that's tough love and luck of the draw.

      Players and clubs should be able to negotiate any length contract they want but it should be paid in pull if either party re-nig.

    Just with West Coast
    From what i’ve seen players like Hough, Ginbey, Watermen, H edwards etc have comeback in very good nick
    West coast have had a couple injuries so far but everyone does
    Kane Cornes has never had anything positive to say about west coast even when they were good
    Port can’t do no wrong, can you imagine how much shit west coast would get if they stuffed up a concussion protocol
    Yet he went of on something that wasn’t anyone’s fault and was taken care of and handled well

      West Coast might be struggling at the moment, but it’s all swings and roundabouts there no point sitting in the middle of the ladder forever if you never win a grand final. Some people look at winning spoons as negative when realistically it’s a big positive, you can land. Yourself a high quality draft picks or have good trading power.
      West Coast are now currently the 2nd youngest side in the comp doesn’t take long to turn things around fast.
      What will be more concerning to other clubs is most of West Coast Eagles older players have moved on opening up their celery cup. And with some fantastic free agents out of contract in 2024 it will be exciting times.
