Dirt Bike Magazine tests the 2023 KTM 300XC-W two stroke on the trail. In the U.S., there are two different 300cc two-strokes that carry the KTM name: the 300XC and the 300XC-W. Up front, the two bikes seem very similar. They both have the most successful motor in KTM history; the 300cc two-stroke. Both have Transfer Port Injection, oil injection and six-speed transmissions. According to KTM’s overall plan, bikes in the XC line are viewed as cross-country racers. Those with the “W” suffix are more trail oriented. That, however, doesn’t stop anyone from lining up with W models in enduros and cross-country events all over the country, most specifically in the east. First and foremost, PDS rear suspension without linkage is used on the W. That means the WP Xplor shock is bolted directly to the swingarm. The spring is progressive and has dual rates of 60 and 66 Nm. The frame and swingarm are designed specifically to accommodate this system. On the XC-W, linkage is used to connect the Xact 5750 shock to the swingarm. A straight rate spring of 42 Nm is used. When a tight trail is littered with junk and it’s a struggle to just keep moving, there’s nothing better than the W.

Just bought the 2023 KTM 300XC-W. I have around 7 hours on it now. I can't ride much because its 20 degrees all the time now and I'm a fair weathered rider lol. This bike is a power house, much smoother, more controllable power delivery vs my 2007 KTM 300 XC-W. Not to say my 07 is not an amazing bike, because I still love to ride it. $12,900 out the door, but I could honestly care less. Everyone complained about the $7,000 MSRP when I bought that bike way back when. This is more than enough bike for me and most average riders like myself. I'm excited to race the next season next spring.

I LOVE my 22 model! I think it needs lighter fork oil as I feel there is a little too much compression damping. I fitted an Emduro Engineering brake pedal and a KTM fan early as I found the same thing you guys did. Also I put on a Motominded/Baja Designs headlight as the stock one is garbage…

2019 was the best TPI bike, go try one and you'll see, the suspension, motor and reliability was spot on. KTM tried to improve and slightly went off stroke, not to a detriment, but nothing is as good as a 19 TPI!

The old bikes perform just as great as the new fuel injected. I have a new 2022 300xcw. And I still prefer my old 2009 300xcw that I sold. I regret that. That's because the suspension was all dialed in. If the suspension isn't working for you. Then you need to take the time and become a suspension expert.

Is Dirtbike Magazine Canadian? You quoted the Canadian MSRP which is why I ask. And I agree, it is outrageous. I know fuel costs have raised the price of everything, but these bikes (and Yamaha's, as I have been looking at them as well) have gone up a lot in price in the last few years.

The whole point of a 2 stroke is to keep a low price point and easy maintenance in your garage and not spend 150 an hour for a mechanic. Who ever thought not putting a kick starter on was probably the same designer that thought a car didn't need a oil dipstick.

SICASS racing makes a horn/brake light/tag light/plate mount kit for this bike, I just installed one on my '22. If your state requires blinkers they make another kit with them. No emissions/inspections in my state so YMMV if your state does. I believe it boils down to your title and whether or not it's titled as an orv or on highway vehicle.

They quoted the Canadian MSRP. I think TPI was 2018, but I could be wrong. I'm not sure how the emissions regulations work in Europe, but I suspect the TPI is cleaner than TBI can be. They may not be able to change the XCW's to TBI depending on how the rules work.

KTM 300 durability has really dropped since the advent of TPI, especially for those who ride in colder temperatures. Piston seizures are far more common, often within 25 hours. And you are right, that there can be a big difference as to ride ability between different examples. KTM has outsourced piston and cylinder manufacturing, resulting in a loss in quality. Sadly the prices keep going up. Your 30 day guarantee won’t help you much. Some guys get good ones, some guys don’t. I have bought 7 new KTM/ Huskies in the last decade, and the pre mix bikes were far more reliable. It will be really interesting to see what the 2024 300 XCW will look like. TBI will help with the cold seizure issue as the injected fuel will help the injected oil penetrate the block when cold and thick. A return to premix will do the same.
