Yeah, I think that if you happen to crochet exactly how the designers expect, then it’s a fine product, but if you’re even a little bit off it ends up being very stressful

I would find this yarn so stressful to work with for a granny square - I was feeling stressed out just watching the video haha. I would need to use it for a different type of project...or just not use it at all.

I agree because I usually like going with the flow as much as possible. Besides, it's the most frugal way to manage it. Or if we really want the traditional look we can still cut and weave in the yarn ends to achieve that goal. But the great thing about this particular product is that it should eliminate having to juggle more than one skein at a time, and having to think about which color do I need to grab next. I expect it would also work well enough for alternative, more linear stitch patterns.

I think those who really love making granny squares for specific projects will like this once they figure out what works for them to make the colors fall in place. I like making granny squares as well, but if I ever get my hands on this yarn, it won't be for the purpose it was manufactured for. I've recently discovered the joy of crocheting granny rectangle blankets, and want to see how the colors in this yarn pool up in that pattern when making one giant piece. Also how it appears in other stitches and patterns will be fun to discover. I think it will be fun, and can't wait to get my hands on some.

Following a spinal cord injury, breast cancer, chemo, radiation, massive MRSA infection and adverse drug reactions, I found that neuropathy, chemo brain, etc made it impossible to hold my knitting needles or even understand patterns (have been knitting since 5y.o.). The crochet hook and patterns were almost as bad, but I remembered a square "granny square" baby blanket I had made years before, but wanted to make one a rectangular shape. Of course I found EASY online instruction and have since made several of them in varying sizes. They showcase unique yarns so beautifully. Please share your work if you so choose to make a granny out of this yarn; I'd love to see it!❤

Ok so, I actually love this yarn! Once I made a couple of squares I got used to the tension I needed, and the squares are small enough that redoing a row or part of a row wasn’t too big of a deal. I did manage to get 14 squares out of a ball, and I love that the colors are already chosen for me! I struggle with making decisions (and I also really REALLY hate weaving in ends)

I think it's a cool idea and brilliant for people on a budget who don't want to use multiple skeins just to make multicoloured granny squares. • @GillianBergh
      @GillianBergh 7 місяців тому +2

If you have the patience to crochet or knit, I don't see why this yarn would need a greater effort, as it's a smooth one, or should that be even? I haven't the patience for uneven ones, such as eyelash. It's quite hard to see if you drop any stitches with them, and also the same when it comes to picking them up.

    • @jequirity1
      @jequirity1 7 місяців тому +1

@@GillianBergh The patience comes from needing to re-do every row to get the perfect tension. You can see in the video that some colors needed looser tension and some needed tighter tension, otherwise the colors don't work up right-- this is frustrating to work with.

  • @blueismylove3128

Before the video started. I already knew how this would go (including that no one can return items and NOT buy yarn at Joanna's, it's too tempting). Everyone crochets differently from tension to speed to using a different hook material, all things thet would effect results. So while i guess this video proves its possible to do what the yarn claims you can do, the conclusion is obviously unless youre the person who tested the yarn before it was marketed to the public, you very likely are going to get different results. I dont mind acrylic yarn (it was hilarious to see Tony basically roll her eyes at it because she didnt want to diss it too much 😂) i just don't think constantly fighting to have the colors match is worth it. Crochet is supposed to be fun/relaxing, having to frog every row and redo it til it matches is the fastest way to either make me throw out a yarn or abandon my previous pattern. Its a cool idea to not have to weave in any ends, but for me personally if i wanted a specific color on each row i also want thr ability to change it around if i feel necessary. All that being said, i would consider this yarn if it was on sale. I LOVE colorful granny squares and I love the colors changing in there own because i personally prefer multiple colors per row. I think it would look neat. So while it's cool that its technically possible to make a granny square using one color per yarn, thats not how i make mine anyway ❤😂. So for me its a 6/10. It would be 8 but -2 points for that ridiculous price. This is acrylic yarn and from my experience red heart doesnt seem to one the "premium acrylic" end but they sure like to charge like it 😒. Ive knitted/crocheted with better acrylic yarn for half the price of red hearts.

    • @amypetty5013

Yeah, I'm not at all a fan of acrylic (which is not to say I don't use it, I do...) but I avoid Red Heart. There are a lot of acrylic yarns on the market of vastly better quality and at comparable price points.

I got two skeins of those purely because I thought the colors were fun. Didn’t even realize it was for granny squares when I picked it up. Then my mom pointed it out. I got the Black - Carnation. I normally work in the cool tones and most often blues/purples. So I was trying something different. Long story short I was trying to trick my grandma into picking a yarn she liked the color of so I could make her a Celtic scarf for Christmas, plus a matching hat. (Hence the second skein,
Which I still have enough of for 3 to 4 more hats) I’ll tell you now, it looked WILD!

This yarn is actually perfect for people learning color pooling. The granny squares are small enough that re doing the rounds a few times while you learn the colorway isn't nearly as painful as having to frog an entire row of a wave stitch blanket 😂
I think a workaround might be to keep your tension a TINY bit tight and then do an extra DC or slip stitch at the end of the round with any extra yarn.
I can see someone figuring out a color pooled mitered square with this yarn.
Color pooling is hellish at first but it's one of those things that only gets better with time. You learn how to figure out each yarns colorway and adjust your tension with each color accordingly.
Overall I'd rather just pick out all my own colors for granny squares

For someone like me who doesn't do granny square or projects that require multiple color changes because I HATE weaving in ends. This would actually work for me. It would be worth having some colors off a little to not have ends to weave in. But I'm also not making anything to sell it's usually just for me, so if it's not perfect, it doesn't bother me. I also like the idea of not having multiple skeins of yarn in different colors to work with and leftover yarn in all those colors.

Are these reviews you mention actually being "snooty" or do they actually have valid points? I love the look of granny squares but I’ve never been able to make a full project with them for a few different reasons. For me I struggle picking colors that look nice together so having a set color scheme is wonderful for me. I also hate weaving in ends to the point that I wont even finish a project if it has too many ends so fiddling around with the tension and switching hooks might be worth it to me. Thanks for taking one for the team, Toni! I would far rather have the flexibility of different granny square designs, not having to worry about my tension and sewing in ends here, and there. Being worried all the time, and having to undo and undo isn’t my idea of a pleasant afternoon!

First off, why in the world would you buy 5 skeins? I mean, nice to show the different colorways but that seems "above & beyond", LOL! I would never buy this because, for me, the fun of doing a Granny Sq. is choosing your own colors. Yes, sewing in the ends is a pain but oh well, it is a Granny Sq. My preferred colors normally don't match what industry standards want to sell. As for the price, yeah no. I used to like RH because of the large number of colors. Enough different tones that I could do a reasonable blend from one color to another. Not anymore as those shades no longer exist. Overall I use less RH now that Yarnspirations owns the brand. All they seem to do with the brand is to find some gimmicky reason to raise the price.

My observations after watching 5 UA-cam reviews of this yarn: If you experts can’t get the colors to come out perfect (and nobody can), what is the hope for us?! The time it takes to keep ripping out the rows, just get regular yarn and hide your ends. And lastly, you do realize that since you used some of the purple that was needed for the next square, the next square will be really messed up. You are so kind in your opinion, so I’m going to rip off the band aid for you. Used for its purpose, this yarn sucks! 😂 I love you and your channel.

I love that Red Heart tried something new and different. I've played with this yarn and, like you, I don't chain in between my clusters, I always do a magic circle, and I only chain 2 on the corners. Due to this I went up to a 6 hook and it worked out for me. Everyone crochets differently so yeah, if you have time and patience you can play with it and figure out what works for you. I agree its not for beginners!

I avoid red heart simply because I don’t do well with acrylic. Acrylic seems to irritate my skin and I have to limit the amount of time I work with it. I have a ton of it I bought at garage sales and it’s pretty enough, I just can’t work with it very long without my hands breaking out.

I’m a little bit biased because I personally hate the feel of Red Heart Super Saver yarns, but when I first saw the concept, the thought of not having to weave in ends on granny squares was definitely exciting/intriguing. After watching your video though, it makes sense that it feels like yarn chicken the entire time, which is not fun, and that you SHOULD make the granny squares their way but not everyone likes to make them that way (I prefer a magic ring and not chain spaces too!). It kind of makes me lean towards never wanting to try this yarn unless it’s on sale for much less

im uk based so cant get this yarn (right now at least, hopefully in the future!!!) but the trial and error aspect of this yarn is so much more appealing to me than doing a standard granny square with different colours.. i hate weaving in ends and ive seen many videos now that use different techniques successfully so i think its a lot of frogging until you 'figure out' how the yarn works for you

I'm not a person who crochets granny squares, and I wasn't surprised by the outcome of this video. With that said, this product reminds of the Caron yarn cakes and their self-striping yarn. I've made a couple of shawls with them- fun to not weave in ends, and the striping happens randomly within the row. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I do not understand the obsession with Super Saver. Yes, it's cheap, but so are ithsr, much better, 100% acrylic yarns. RHSS is so scratchy that I don't even like working with it and, tbh, I think it's the reason why everyone is always shocked when I give them a crochet blanket that is soft.

I think this yarn is for the planned pooling crowd, the end weaving in haters, and those that just don't care. I love the idea because I hate weaving ends in but I love granny squares. But I don't have the patience for planned pooling, which is what this essentially is, and I'd rather just go completely random and let the colors land where they land.

Excellent review and demo! Adjusting tension would be a fair trade-off, vs changing, cutting and sewing in a bunch of ends. IF it worked, without pulling back every round or so. Seems the squares may not be very uniform, and could be an issue when sewing them together. Looks too aggravating; but came out pretty, even if not entirely as intended. Beautiful nails, too! 💖

Thanks for trying it for us Toni! I'd been contemplating how I'd use this if I got any, and honestly it probably wouldn't be granny squares. I'd rather just weave in ends than try to manage the tension to that extent. This looks like it'd be fun to just use in a hat, scarf, crocodile scale project, or a sweater- something you're not trying to plan the color orientation for. The colors they used are mostly okay too.

I agree with everything you said using the yarn as it was intended-I wouldn’t use it for granny squares on the few occasions that I create one. The entire planet would be covered in granny square blankets in the exact same color and who wants that? Not me. HOWEVER, I have seen a mosaic blanket, a C2C blanket and a horizontal dc 1 row repeat blanket that were interesting. The yarn behaves like any self-striping yarn. So the good news is - think outside of the square! The yarn has more applications than the humble granny square.

  • @amypetty5013

Thanks for the review! I was suspicious of this the moment you explained what it was. Knitting and crochet are both such highly individualistic craft skills when it comes to the various factors that affect tensioning and the final gauge you manage to get. I don't see how a yarn like this is truly beneficial to anyone - beginners are going to struggle to get it to crochet up as promised due to their inexperience. And I suspect that most more experienced crocheters wouldn't find much _need_ for yarn like this, even if they can make it work up properly. Beyond that I see little utility in it; it's just another variegated yarn.
Personally I wouldn't bother with a yarn that I had to be fiddly with in order to make it work up to specifications. I already take time playing with different hook sizes, yarn weights, whether to hold two yarns together, and exactly what kind of granny square I'm aiming for, because I can be very indecisive in finding out what's vibing for me at the moment.

I just really want to know what people expected of this yarn. Every single review I've seen has complained about having to follow the granny square pattern they give and having to manage you're tension. How else was this ever supposed to work? A magic yarn that works with 100% of people's tension and preferred way of making a granny square?
