Intro - "Bow and Arrow" - T-Mass
ncs.io/BowandAr...
Love that 245. My dad had two. You can see through the headrests. Reduces travel sickness.
Easily one of the least comfortable headrests ever invented, but in true Volvo fashion, function over form!
Pull to the right may be the camber adjustment on top of the right strut tower.
When it comes to pulling to the sides its generally the tierods going bad. Best test is to jack the car up and move the wheel from the 9 and 3 position. If it moves its tie rods.
have you guys used kt4 performance before. Looking for a downpipe for my s60. got mixed reviews.
No way 240 is that slow. Probably something happened with engine :/
New here, might be something as simple as a throttle cable adjustment. The air box also has a flap that closes the main intake hole and takes warm air from the exhaust manifold when the engine is cold. Usually they break and permanently close the main intake hole, I just yank it out and the performance is much better.
It’s 114hp moving close to 3000 lbs. it’s slow.
@@ShiftingLanes It _was_ 114 hp. Quite a few has left the stable at this point. Do a redblock turbo thing with it! Watch a couple of videos about the Group A Volvos from back in the day.
You’re not gonna stress a 240
Great video, love seeing that the 245 runs even after been sitting for a while. Good luck with the car 👍
That was the ghost of the previous owner, he doesn't want to give up control to a new owner yet and he will continue to manipulate controls until he passes fully into the after life. Speak nicely to him and no-one will get hurt. lol
Volvo seats are very comfortable though old are most suitable in long journeys
Medical experts participated in the design of the Volvo seats making them the most comfortable in long trips.
@@bensonwarungu343 ohh that makes sense do they still do that?
CAN confirm! Did 2900 miles in our 940 wagon in the recent road trip with little to know back/butt pain!
@@ricky107_ not sure if modern seats are as comfy as of 1980s and 90s but are more safer. It's as old Mercedes benze's and Volvos cars of late 80's and early 90s were overengineered that its was almost impossible for them to break down further more are quieter and comfortable than modern cars. May be a function that only modern Mercedes S class can near.
i think volvo concentrates on initial comfortness in their seats now since most reviewers reviewing newer volvos always comment on how comfortable the seats are
Aye Nordkap fam
Use canned air to blow out your sunroof drains on the VR (Side note - Please don't huff the Duster, drugs are bad mmm'kay?)
Can't wait to see what you do to this old girl over the next couple years!
We gotta get you in some other old cars! Also, Volvo is still ahead on safety. Volvo does so much that isn't tested for, so there are considerations in Volvo safety that no one touches.
it has a red block no? those blocks hold a ton of pressures, ebay turbo that puppy!
turbo swapping an na redblock isn't a good idea
@@hamatozuki9339 yeah this probably has the baby rods, depending on year
@@Stale_Mahoney It's a 1990 so it should have the 13mm rods, but no squirters.
@@theprangusclan well then it should not be a problem, squirters are nice to have but it's mostly for long time high load/revs. so should not be a deciding factor i believe
Volvos are unstoppable. They keep rolling and go even after 12 months of neglect. The 240 is the best engineered car in the world.
You could by that Car for like $150 in sweden
not anymore. 240s have skyrocketed in price in sweden. you have to pay atleast 1000$ for one in ok condition and if you want a nice one you will have to pay 2000-4000$
You've only been driving it for 10 minutes and you're already listing the good things about the car.
What does that tell you?
MORE 240 VIDS :D
What about a Yamaha/Volvo B8444S swap, instead of the standard boring LS swap?
Maybe put 2 “VEA -D5” Bi-turbo assemblies and make it quad turbo?
The new d5 turbos aren't made for gas engines. And there is no easy way to swap in that V8. A BMW M60B40 is the better bet. No ls 240s thanks
@@alexstromberg7696 there are only a select few things in life that are impossible, making Diesel Turbos work on Bensin engines is not one of them, sure you will have to "rework them", but it would be theoretically possible and massively expensive of course.
A untouched B8444S would probably fit if you changed some engine mounts around, hell that thing even fits in a f*cking original S40.
B8444S, Wiseco 8.4:1's, twins, Mercedes 722.6 trans, and a Ford 8.8" in a 245 is gonna be my build here in a couple years.
@@klaspeppar5619 thing is, why do all that when a better and more developed engine can be fitted?
@@alexstromberg7696 you do realize that the "double bi-turbo B8444S" is an crazy idea similar to Rob Dahm's idea of a AWD 4-rotor turbo RX-7.
Some people like to think of weird and challenging builds, while others just wants to be like everyone else.
Why even engine swap a car when you could buy a better developed one instead?
It is the passion, the challenge and feeling of accomplishment that makes it worth it.
Nice review!!!
I got a 92 wagon with a lot of mods that will take me an hour to mention them all cause I've been working on her for three years.
Shout out to the Garden State.
If you have one disconnect or remove the analog clock if you have it they will drain a good battery from full charge in 2 weeks or less of not running the engine. Go back to stock steel wheels and get some snow tires on that brick for some great fun in the snow this winter!
It appears that it's an automatic so you might want to take it out of OD. My 86 245 has over 300k and I'd drive it across country right now. My other cars are Porsches and enjoy driving the 245. Remember, the wagons are over 3,000 pounds......not fast but solid like a tank!
Why take it out of overdrive?
That car is a solid platform to make into anything you can think of. Restore it, rod it, make a sleeper, drive it across the country to the other coast road trip.
My 1st car was a 1992 Volvo 240
Just 'inherited' my ex-wife's '92 240 brick. Actually it had been in the family for the 13 years we've been 'not' a couple, and I've done a lot of maintenance on it over that time; but now it's mine. It's low mileage (for a brick...150k or so. Speedometer was changed, but I have records), no rust, peeling clear coat, suspension is shot. The struts and shocks she had put on when it was originally rescued over ten years ago have all died, along with most of the rubber underneath. AC is not working, so it's going to need some work, but I'd like to make it a DD again. Not sure how much beyond that I want to do...maybe fix some minor front sheet metal collision damage.
So...I'm off to Pull a Part for some pieces/parts.
[Note: these things are disappearing from the the U-pull yards around here in Nashville. They were common on the lots when we got the car 10 years ago, so word to the wise: buy anything you think you might need when you see it. It may not be easily available when you do. Many parts are even disappearing from the online suppliers]
Hahha love how you describe what's going on. Overall. I laughed and enjoyed the review/drive. Thumbs up.
Volvo Power!
Tie rods are shot. Possibly a sticking brake caliper as well. I would recommend getting this kit and installing it on the car: www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-suspension-upgrade-kit-front-240-240ftkit3
Creepy sound after shutoff may be a vacuum leak. Not sure of your 245 year, but there used to be a set of three or four spheres on the firewall that served as a vacuum tank and holds a vacuum after shutoff. These cars are tanks - and the engines are indestructible and easy to work on. It will be fun to watch you bring this one back to life!
I'm thinking about building my 245. I subscribed to see how this goes.
We’re in NJ. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Many people do just look at turbo brick forums
3 or 4 thousand dollars lol. My 240 was better than that one i paid 1200. Basic maintenance goes a long way. These cars were ment to last. Forget all trends and norms the 240 is its own thing.
My 1992 240 has 300000+ miles & is still running strong.
This wagons a fucking tank! Glad i got to meet ya in person at the Cars and Coffee btw Gregson! Also those tierods are pretty much fucked from the inner and outer.
My 240 has 645,100 miles now with 2.3....paid 1200 for it and I put the 200 k miles on it.
Whatup with that crusty old Fiero???
Hanging out at BlueSky waiting for a resto!
@@ShiftingLanes is it an Indy?
Not sure didn’t look. Will have to check next time.
The Volvo enjoyed being driven.
Please unstance it too! Follow JRGO’s principle lol. The 240 is soooooooooo cool 😍

Do a restoration and put a volvo T5 engine in it.
550 HP Big turbo T6 :)

I have a volvo V70 wagon 1999 model and I honestly need some help getting it upto par if there's anything ya could help me with it really would be appreciated
Check out Robert Diy on youtube, robert is a volvo guru and has a lot of good stuff. Also, the forums are your friend, swedespeed, matthewsvolvo come to mind.
Welcome to the world of Old Classic Volvos! Our recently picked up 940 Turbo Wagon project has been a blast so far, there's a reason Volvo over these generations had such a reputation for reliability and dependability! Curious to see what direction you take YOUR project!
Whats up with da xc90 2005 T6
I would LOVE a 240 as a project. Brakes are probably shot too - hence the pull (seized caliper would point to it as well as terrible performance), definitely upgrade time. Very quiet engine too for a redblock. Very keen to see how this goes
Yup, it's a 240 alright.
To make it a bit better you should:
With the risk of being completly obvious :)
1: Get the filters shifted. Maybe drain the tank.
2: New sparkplugs, leads and distributor. Check for air leaks in the hoses and and around the manifold. Check the exhaust for leaks forward from the lambda. Makes the engine run alot better.
3: If you want a bit more power you could change the camshaft to a "hotter" one.
4: Change the tires to a bit narrower and higher profile = quiet. Handling doesn't really suffer.
5: The rails on the front seats are probably full of crap and probably not fastened correctly or loose. You should not feel that you are sitting sideways in a 240.
6: Keep the handbrake in good working order at all times and use it always and "lightly". If not it will get stuck (weak point on the 240, 850, V70 and all Volvos with the 2 wire handbrake design)
All is pretty straight forward and durable on the 240. If not driven in places where ther is snow and salt you will not have much problems with rust either.
Somebody please sell me your 245!!! I've owned two 244's 89&90 and looking for a wagon, let's make it happen y'all!!! I currently have a 2004.5 S40 1.9T SLE fun car but not as solid as the 240...
That's a European Touring Car Championship Winner a very sound car ! Won the Australian Bathurst race , it was amazing seeing it pass the V12 Jaguar going up the hill with its 400 bhp. These are fantastic cars . Watch the you tube videos .Are those plastic headlamp lenses? The European ones are glass. There is a ETCC racer for sale at the moment.. 250,000 UK pounds ! Put a T5 motor in it, keep it Volvo 😘
I love that you've got a Volvo 240, but don't be so terrified of it. These are old, yes, but they are nice to drive when they're done up right. I drive one that is much older than yours (1983) and everything works on it. Yours has more power than mine, but it really isn't slow. It's not a fast car, but they are really good performers. The seats are very comfortable when they have good foam, seat springs, and working lumbar. Please fix this car up, it's an incredibly safe car that is super reliable and is a joy to drive when it's fixed up. Great video, thanks for posting!
My 89 240 had 3 out of 4 frozen calipers. That made mine pull funky directions. Front brakes are 4 pistons with dual circuits. Both back parking brakes had the lining falling off one shoe, also a dragger. And then one of the front wheel bearings was so bad it fell apart when I took off the hub. Flushing the trans fluid was easy by disconnecting the return line from the radiator. Don't forget to service the flame trap. It got faster with every repair, but still not quick. Enjoy!!
Man, this 245 need some love. If you want it to be cool for small money, just mill head, adjustable cam gear, vx3 camshaft bigger injectors, change suspension springs for heavy duty and buy gas shocka, also wider wheels with spacera +50 on all 4 wheels. You will get cool drivers car and engine about 150 hp with good torque and sound. You can check how it sounds on my channel, ofcourse mine is carbed, but cpecs are same as i said before, it will sound much like that with custom exhaust. I have self made exhaust.
I hope to see you guys do the work on this car. You can start with 2 screws holding the regulator and brushes on the alternator (assuming that you don’t have bearings on it and that the battery is good). That could be the problem...$20 for a regulator on eBay. You mentioned no down shift, first check adjustment and look to see if it is broken at the mount near the throttle body. It should be replaced every 6 to 10 years or 75,000 miles, which ever comes first.
I hope that you keep the wagon all Volvo, they are getting rare.
The old professor
How psi a stock can support?
Mike Forager a factory 2.3 turbo out of a 740 turbo can handle around 15 pounds in stock form. A converted n/a b230 from like a 240 can handle around 12 pounds and still be pretty safe depending on how well you brought your compression down.
@@johncaudell1618 thank
I have a 245 which has been my daily driver since 1992. All original paint, seldom needs a repair. Best car ever next to my 64 544!
If the Volvo hasnt been driven or run since the battery was fitted it might be worth checking for a boot ( trunk ) or interior light stuck in the on position or more likely the head unit , being that the speakers are missing it would be very easy to not notice and leave it switched on .
Over here in the UK they have a reputation of being an " old timers " car but i quite fancy one , rock solid built and safe for the family and its not entirely detrimental that they are so very tunable . ;)
Realistically, it would be pretty cool if he got a T5 engine and an m66, turned up the boost, made some real power there, cause it can handle much much more than what that sock R block can, as well with a lower budget, because you don’t have to worry about the walls cracking
How about a built 850 T5R engine to that? If I recall correctly, it's in longituede way in engine bay so it should not be a brainer...in case you can get a hold of such tech.
Try the fiero next 😀
Sell me those wheels! What the heck, they're dope.
Cars out of alignment. OH GOD ITS FALLING APART SO SKETCHY!!!!
This must be your first day on the Internet. Welcome to UA-cam.
I bet you just have no charge. But if you have leakage you can find it in few minutes with any cheap multitester.
" It's way quieter in here than I thought it would be" (4:24) - even when the door seal is pulled away! Now that's quality!
Can I buy it
Thank you guys for all the sweet Volvo content!!!! the. are you guys racing that supra in your v70 R? I am jonesing to see these Volvos in action
So now you know why the first Tubo they made was a 240 Turbo. The car is underpowered.
Dead battery. Is the radio a Volvo or was it replaced ? If replaced , put a Volvo radio back in it. The Volvo radio has a special circuit in to test for a bad computer module.
Has an aftermarket radio in it.
@@ShiftingLanes Change the Radio to a Volvo Radio. Charge the battery . Check for a little Red Light on the Volvo radio at night. There is a special circuit in the Radio that detects current leakage from the computer located on the pasengers side near the wheel well inside the car. I had to replace the Radio in a 89 740 that had the same problem of draining batteries.
make a vid when you take it on the dyno im kinda curious what my own 240 makes
These things just get wrong from standing, keep it stock!
To LS swap this would be a disgrace. A T5 that has a unique sound of its own or a T6 that sounds as good as a 2JZ with the right components would be the right way to go about this for sure.
Yess keep it volvo
T5 turbo it, it has room in the engine bay
Is that an Interceptor in the background? :O
You guys got to address those potholes 😅
Bro, you could also have a parasytic power leak
It’s not even that old
What happened to you racing your v70r against a m3 or a supra?
M3 number 6 has fallen through. But a viewer just reached out and said he has one. Hoping to happen in Nov/Dec. Albon haven’t finished their MKIV build yet, and they just got the world’s FIRST crashed MKV! So might be 2020 on that one.
Wait a minute. That’s in Mount Olive by the ITC. I’ve got a grey ‘90 240DL
Well spotted!
ShiftingLanes I’ve seen that wagon and kept wondering what it’s doing at a shop that I’ve seen only Corvettes.
