Being a professional, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on Ecobees. As a consumer I liked them in my old house to track runtimes, etc... Our new house has a Trane single stage compressor heat pump paired with a Trane TEM6 air handler, which is considered variable speed but our builders contractor paired it with a T6 Pro so it isn’t set up to use R-comfort. I just have the standard heat pump wiring with aux heat at my thermostat but it still makes me nervous swapping them out. I don’t think it will be an issue because the Honeywell isn’t controlling the fan speed or anything. The TEM6 is basically set up as a constant speed from what I can tell. The contractor didn’t set it to do the ramping or anything. Without the Trane 824 thermostat, it can’t modulate humidity so the ecobee shouldn’t act any different than my Honeywell I assume. All the installer did was set the fan to run for 90 seconds after a call for heat or cooling stops. All I would do is set the ecobee to not run the fan after a call stops so the ecm will continue to do it’s operation as current. Only thing is, the T6 Pro lets you set CPH where ecobee doesn’t. I’m not sure that’s an issue or not.

Last spring, I had to replace my 16 yo thermostat due to battery leakage. Knowing I would probably replace my HVAC (A/C with gas furnace) in the near future, I purchased a Honeywell T9 as I was expecting to upgrade to a heat pump with gas. Fast forward about 7 months, we made the decision to go ahead and do the upgrade but with a 2 stage furnace and heat pump. To make a long story short, the installer was having problems wiring correctly for all features to work. Calling Resideo (Honeywell), we find out that the T9 was incompatible with heat pump/ 2 stage heating. Had to get a T10. So I essentially wasted my money on the T9. This brings up another question. Is a single stage heat pump with 2 stage furnace a 1C/2H or 1C/3H system?

Any idea what thermostat controls a separate dehumidifier? The tech installed a sense touch, and wired the dehumidifier to turn on when the hvac/ furnace comes on. It's not working well at all and the humidity is out of control.

Would be interesting to know about the two gas heaters, 80% vs. 90%. How much is operation savings with all other factors remaining equal? Same for newer AC systems, 15 SEER vs. 16 SEER vs. 18 SEER vs. 20 SEER vs 22 SEER vs 25 SEER all other factors remaining the same such as gas/power rates envelope, ducting etc.
I have heard from the industry that the extra cost isn't worth it but no one lays out the savings that are gained by going with the 22 SEER vs. 15 SEER or 16 SEER. There are some customers and properties that do see some benefits in higher initital HVAC cost to reach a spending goal on gas or electric power that THEY are comfortable with. I know of some folks who would rather have their more esxpensive assets saving them money with their electric or gas utility vs. shelling out high dollars monthly to them.

When I put in a 2 stage Trane I bought the Trane 824. . It didn't work. It would go back and forth between the 2 stages. Sometimes it would just shut off for 3 minutes. They replaced it with another 824 and same issues. They then put in a 1050. The temp readings were way off so it was replaced with another 1050 and again same issue. Finally the put in a Aprilaire and it worked. In the end the techs admitted that they were having issues with the Trane thermostats.

Looking for a recommendation. Installing a inverter heat pump and a single stage gas furnace. Some of thermostats give a 1 or 2 stage heat pump, do some thermostats give an inverter option? Dose any of the thermostats give me an option to do the change over to gas at up to 50 degrees? I am interested in the changeover from electric to gas depending on the cost of gas and electricity. Thanks in advance

    • @Pierceb2

You only need a cold weather heat pump not dual fuel etc. You do not need heat strips etc but you need to understand how it works. Also an energy audit of your home and I believe an independent study and design. A very good communicating thermostat with great algorithms. For real details and deep dive on this see videos by Abode Energy, NEEP, Maine Heat Pump Study and take it from there. Lots of great videos on UA-cam to educate yourself. Japan, Korea, Norway, Sweeden, Europe all use Heat Pumps some for decades. No duel fuel gas, oil or electric resistor heat strips needed. Abode has a paper / print out on their website for example on how to run your heat pump. It is different than a furnace, set it and forget it at first. It may be running a lot but it’s a very efficient variable speed electric motor pumping refrigerant not nurning oil or gas. You have to trust it and experience the results for heating and cooling.
Make dealer show you calculations for your annual BTU Needs and convert your oil, gas or electric resistance heat vs heat pump running costs for your local climate area.
There are calculators in the Internet to do these things for you. If your dealer or installer won’t do for you hire someone who will even if it costs you $200 or $300 dollars it is money well spent and will probably save you money and prevent buyers remorse. Trust but Verify!

    • @chrisrioux

I’m not a pro, but if the click comes from the thermostat itself, perhaps find a clear plastic plexiglass box/case to put on the wall to try and isolate /dampen the sound (put cushions/foam pads in there, etc.) or you could get a metronome and and turn the clicking into a game to make dog realize there nothing to fear? Also not an expert. Just ideas.

I just want a simple thermostat I can access via WiFi, set a schedule or just set the temperature.
I bought a nest and I absolutely hate it and need something that works for me.
Biggest issue with the Nest is setting a schedule or setting a temperature does nothing…it wants to “learn” and adjust , based on when your not home or whatever. Problem is, I’m usually not on the main level so it’s setting it to 76 and Hot AF…setting it to 72 starts cooling but then changes itself to 76 again… you can’t lock in the temp and can’t turn off the “learning”, you can reset it so it does it less but eventually it goes full “FU, be hot” mode…Hate it.

I have a gas log in the same room as main thermostat and this screws up the temperature in rest of home during the winter. Having a remote sensor in our master bedroom has solved this issue. I have a Venstar Voyager T3700 with added wifi module and it works very well as does the iPhone app. I don't really like so many of the bells and whistles of the Nest and Ecobee. Also, the Venstar has screw terminals and will still work with stranded cable and my place has that. The only downside for me is that it isn't as attractive as a Nest. Maybe now that they're owned by Daikin they give it an asthetic makeover.

I have a digital thermostat put in a new home two years ago but it’s not smart thank goodness. Heard someone talking about how there are entities who may be able to turn off your systems thermostat if it’s a smart one. Kind of like shutting off electric cars if you don’t make your payments. So if they decide there’s too much energy being used, they can just shut everyone down and they could either get too hot or too cold because of that. Wondering if they can do that to just my regular digital one? And if so, would going back to the old fashion analog be a way to get around this? I remember liking those round honey wells

Just replaced my old programmable thermostat with a non-programmable thermostat. Reason? I am in my home 90% of the time, so a programmable thermostat does me no good. Agreed with the battery powered thermostats...not a good idea due to two reasons which are: they often leak and will damage the part and unless you replacement them often, your HVAC is disabled when the battery runs low. We recently replaced ours and decided on the Honeywell 9585 series as for one, it was on sale $79 vs. $199 and it had the C wire we wanted as well as the app to remotely operate the system with your smart phone. We rarely use the scheduled high and low settings because we experienced higher heating and cooling bills by setting the temps lower in winter nights and higher in summer nights. I guess it took more gas/power to bring the temps up or down as needed from stone cold or sweaty hot vs. leaving the setting alone throughout the seasons. Some folks are still overdoing it with 72 or 70 settings in summer and 74 or so in winter so I dread to hear about their expenses.
We were in a home that had a recently installed Lennox HVAC 90+% heat and 21 SEER AC and it had a proprietary iComfort S30 thermostat that was beautiful with tons of features. The screen must have been 5" or so in size. That one was very nice and had all of the WiFi and remote features as well. Sadly, those are selling for $900.
