I use the current weather readings of my home location and the current temperature in the house to decide the temperature to set to. This way it can auto adjust during season changes. Life changing!!
Awesome video as always! I have an older Honeywell smart thermostat that doesn't do a good job this time of year when it is cooler in the mornings and we need heat, then by afternoon, we need AC. The swing between heat and cool on that thermostat is 4 degrees which is a lot when it comes to comfort. I now use Homekit to completely control heat and cool modes based on the outside temperature. I used Home+ 6 to create the automations to do this. If the outside temp is below 58, the thermostat is set to heat. When the outside temp is above 58, it is set to cool. Then, I have the schedules controlled via automations in Homekit. It took time to get it right, but it works SO much better than auto mode built into the thermostat. I also use Aqara room temp sensors to change the temp of the thermostat if a room gets above or below a certain temp. While not as good as the Ecobee remote temp sensor control, it still works very well if the living room gets warmer than the hall (where the thermostat is), it drops the set temp one-degree cooler. There are endless possibilities when it comes to automation.
We use the ecobee sensors for occupancy and comparing individual room temperature to our overall desired temperature, it can trigger our shades & fans if needed
I did buy the Ecobee Premium last year for the HomeKit integration. I finally dove into automation and I must admit I was lost. I called Ecobee and they were extremely helpful. Much better than any support from my previous Nest products. I did buy a couple of extra sensors and they are working fine.
Heating and cooling cannot be redirected if your system cannot already do that. Instead the system is using the sensors to determine the temperature and will heat and cool based on the sensors you specify. For example, at night I would tell the thermostat to heat/cool based on the bedroom sensors and ignore hallway sensors, living room, etc. If there are multiple bedroom sensors, it would get the average and use that as the target for heating/cooling.Hope that makes sense.
Great video, Shane! For those still having room temperature differences, highly recommend Flair smart vents. The system works great with Ecobee. The vents open and close based on those individual room sensors temperature to help regulate to the proper desired temperature! They make a small noise when opening or closing, so if you're a light sleeper, a sound machine will ensure that isn't an issue.
@@ShaneCreates, Maybe they would send them to you to check out! I’ve got them in our 3 bedrooms for about 6 months and no issues so far. Helped fix some temperature issues around our house!
Good timing on this one. Recently switched my power bill to have peak and off-peak times, so, I need to set my thermostats to avoid using the A/C as much as possible between 3 pm and 8 pm. Gotta get it cool before then, and maybe use ceiling fans as the home warms up a little but is still on higher energy costs.
Thanks for this. Just had a revelation thanks to this video - the Eco+ is ruining my savings because it is registering my dogs as if I’m home! Turning it off now!
As always, awesome video. I installed two in line booster fans on my furnace’s upstairs supply duct. They are connected to a smart plug which turns on when my ecobee turns on the blower fan. It’s really has helped get the warm and cool air upstairs. 11:05
I have 4 zones all with Ecobee. I use the HomeKit (when the last person leaves and when the 1st person arrives ) to save money. It lowers the heat when no one is home and turns it back on when someone arrives. It does the air conditioning as well. This is my favorite HomeKit feature.
Perfect timing with this video! When I first moved into my home a year and a half ago, I upgraded the dumb Honeywell thermostat to a mid model, HomeKit compatible Honeywell, because it was plug-in-play same wiring, base plate, etc. but six months into owning it, HomeKit (or Honeywell) stopped supporting that model Thermostat so now I have no HomeKit support for my thermostat and have been wanting to upgrade to the ecobee. I'm sure like many others, because of the price, I have a bunch of Aqara temperature sensor throughout the house, so I was wondering if they would work with the ecobee . Like you, i'd like to avoid any unnecessary subscriptions for minor features at HomeKit is completely capable of supporting. thank you again for your reviews. They are always so helpful!
I use the Honeywell T10 the same way (heat pump & humidity) using their Redlink sensor (motion & temp) to prioritize where the temp reading comes from. I also use the remote sensor’s motion detection to trigger automations.
My Ecobee room sensors haven’t been a big help with temperature control as it turns out my rooms have a pretty similar temperature throughout the house. They are one of the few true occupancy sensors for HomeKit though and can be used for “clean up” type automations like “turn off room lights when occupancy is not detected” as they avoid the rapid on/off you’d get with the more common motion detectors so they were easily worth it for that feature!
I got the ecobee premium last summer when my utility company had a big discount offer ($70 off). Honestly, I try to use almost none of the smart features in the thermostat itself but rely entirely on HomeKit, which is why I switched to the ecobee from Nest in the first place. That and it looks a lot better! I never turned on Alexa on this thermostat as she is already listening a few feet away. I only have heat for the whole house system, and I have a daytime and a night temp setting, as both my wife and I are here all the time. Lots of temperature sensors in rooms we use but surprisingly little variation in temperature for most of the year, even though the thermostat is far away from our upstairs occupied rooms. We recently added some minisplits upstairs, which are controlled by Sensibo thermostats in the same rooms and only used on the hottest days (more frequent now in the Pacific NW). These are pretty nifty HK devices, especially with the air quality sensors. Unfortunately those are showing that we need better ventilation. In the summer we do have very different temperatures in the upstairs offices and workout room, depending on the time of day, while downstairs has quite a bit of shading and stays much cooler. For the most part, we deal with those rooms when we are in them and feel the need to cool down. For me to workout, I have to have the temperature below 73 F, my wife isn't as sensitive to the heat. Nonetheless, we can get a complete picture of every room temp from the variety of devices - ecobee, Sensibo, Aqara sensors - so if necessary, I could make this fancier. One thing I would like to improve is better control of the heat when we are not home. It works well enough when we are on vacation, but if we step out for a few hours, I would like to lower the temp and then automatically go back when we come home. But our presence sensing has been messed up (again) since 16.4 or 16.4.1.
I think what could really help you out in your bedroom situation is having thermostatic control valves for your rooms, especially your bedroom. This would act as a limiter when temps get too high and you can set it so that at night all the valves in your house are closed except for the one in your bedroom.
I am not a huge fan of eco+ myself. Since we always have someone at home, my ecobee smart automation are very limited. The only thing I use is a smart automation in the living room to turn on the ceiling fan when the temp goes above 76F to help cool down the room.
Please do a video for a solutions for those of us who don't have central HVAC and use separate devices for climate control - separate air condition units in each room, heating radiators for the winter, etc. This will be usefull for a lot of people living in apartments in Europe.
Thank you for another great video! Ecobee is my favor as well, in fact, it was my very first smart device when I started my Apple Home build up few years back. I am still using my Ecobee 3 lite from day one and added 11 smart sensors for various rooms and areas, very happy with the results that not only make the whole house much comfortable yet without break my arms and legs for the utility bills. The only wish I had was if ecobee sensor could have more setup control and to be used as a true occupancy sensor that be used for more precisely for other automation besides the eco+ function.
Thanks for watching and sharing. I agree...as much as I love the ecobee smart sensors for temperature control, they aren't my favorite as homekit motion/occupancy sensors. Nice that they show up in HomeKit, but I don't use them much for automations either.
What do you think of the eve radiator thermostat? Currently using Netatmo but 2 valves drop signal a lot & eat batteries so looking at changing to another brand for HomeKit . What are your thoughts UK based
Thanks, Shane! Keen Smart Vents are also a great way to put conditioning where you need it most. I just released a video of 20+ automations and have a section dedicated to HVAC. Not sure if Keen plays nice w/ Apple's ecosystem, but great product!
I love your videos bro. Learnt so much about automating after i got my new home. Can you tell me how Home Kit recognizes "When somebody is home". Is that based on the switch bot sensor or a presence sensor?
hi shane With which device can I control my A/C in Homekit? Which one do you recommend? I love your videos, everything I have automated in my house I do based on them. Greetings
Thanks, Shane! I was wondering how smart thermostats would work with a two zone system, so your solution applies to our home. We have an upstairs thermostat that is near the open stairwell, and it doesn't take into account the upstairs bedroom that gets the brutal southern sun in the summer. An extra sensor will be the answer for us, too.
If you were to buy one today, which version would you buy, I don’t need everything to have seri talking to me they don’t seem to work as one and I’ve had instances where I ask something and my phone and mini pods or my watch and pod both talk at once, I also don’t need a air monitor or CO2 monitor I have smoke detectors that do that but do need sensors for multiple rooms and it to work with my Home Kit
Wow thanks Shane!! I was thinking about getting more of those sensors…..but now you helped explain just how vital they are! Especially for hot bedrooms at night!! Hoping one day soon to get my Carro Smart Fan in the living room integrated into HomeKit…..that cooling the house scene was awesome! This might be a dumb question…..assuming it’s best to just set fan modes to Auto in ecobee app?
Hello Shane, I have a question. I bought a scent diffuser that plugs into the ac duct and distributes the scent all thru the house. The problem is I need to keep the fan always on in order for it to work. Is there some kind of smart plug I can link with the Ecobee in order to only turn on when the ac turns on? I don't want to have the ac Fan all the time if I can avoid it.
Thinking about taking the temperature dive. Similar house style, have a question, can you create an automation for say three of five sensors being at a certain temp, or are we currently stuck with choosing one?
Great Video, thanks! I am looking for a smart thermostat for an airbnb property. I need it to have the function where it can be nearly 100% operated from the App so that the ONLY function that the guests can access is turning it off or boosting it incrementally for up to say 6 hours maximum. Also important that guests are unable to override the setting. Do you know if any thermostats have this available in the settings ? Thanks
Looks a good thermostat but it doesn’t support OpenTherm (for those that don’t know OpenTherm is the smart and modern way of controlling your heating, it basically turns the gas down and up to regulate the output where this Ecobee thermostat can only use the old way of gas on or gas off, this is similar to operating a lamp with a dimmer or basic switch with on or off. For the price they should offer OpenTherm like the Nest thermostat.
do you know of any low-cost smart thermostats for houses without HVAC? i really want programmable thermostats for my house, but i have in-wall heaters need one for every room and am not really interested in spending $500 on it.
Not directly in the thermostat or manufacturer app, like you can do with something like the Ecobee sensors, but you can configure Home automations in the Apple Home app with your smart thermostat and the HomePod temp sensors.
Hey man, thanks so much for all of your videos! They’re incredibly helpful and creative! I had a question. I wanted to set up my thermostat to turn off when windows or door sensors are opened. But resume when those sensors are closed. An easy enough automation. But the one thing I’m not sure how to do, is to set it up so the thermostat will resume its last “state” when the sensor is closed. I don’t want the ac/heater to turn on anytime I close a door. But if it were on previous to the sensor being opened I’d like it to resume. Is that even possible? Thanks!!
This may have been asked before but I am new to your channel. Where did you get the auto blinds? I have really high walls and high windows as well. I am looking for some auto blinds to keep the brutal Houston, TX sun out.
Great video Shane. Longtime ecobee user but just realized they now have a security system. Will you be reviewing that specific feature? Would love a comparison to Ring Security. HomeKit compliance make this a strong candidate. It may solve a vacation home scenario to monitor smoke alarms and anyone in the house. Hope to do that without the monitoring.

Hi Shane and all, Not sure why Tado never gets mentioned in US videos. It allows the to have a smart radiator valve in each room communicates with the main thermostat, allowing for to control each room individually. The ecobee with its sensor and simular solutions are simplicity not accurate.
Thanks Shane….My house is similar to yours in that, I have one unit with two zones….Would you recommend getting the lite or spending the extra on the other ecobee systems? I was hoping to save some money since I have to buy two, but I want it to continue to get updates as needed too.
I'd recommend looking at the comparison chart on the Ecobee website. The 3 lite might be perfectly fine for you, but it just depends on what features you need. For example, the 3 lite doesn't include a built in occupancy sensor or have voice control. You can still use the little room sensors with it though.
I generally don’t use any of the homekit features with my ecobees. Always tend to just use the native app. That’s just me. Also don’t ever find myself using Siri to adjust the temp. Would much rather set it up and then not have to mess with it.
So switchbot allows you to integrate their products into HOMEKIT through their Switchbot HUB otherwise they would not be compatible with HomeKit? Do I understand that right? TIA
Anyone know if the ecobee can use the HomePod minis temp and humidity sensors to trigger automations. Like cam ecobee turn my humidifier on my furnace on if the HomePod mini detects low humidity
Hey Shane, great video as always! Would love to integrate an Ecobee into my smart home, but owning split AC units, my solution was the Sensibo Air with native HomeKit support and I’ve been very happy with them. Is the video with the followers’ automations coming next week?
Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear you are happy with Sensibo! The next viewer automation video will be coming soon. Not next week (I have something exciting planned for next week) but soon after! 😃
Shane, If i switch to an ecobee smart thermostat and place the SmartBot Hub2 near my one skylight, can I program the SmartBot's IR transmitter to close may IR operated skylight when either the heater or the A/C turns on? Thanks. PS: I always get so much info from your videos.
Hey Michael, thanks for watching. This wouldn't work natively in homekit since the switchbot's IR capabilities are not exposed to HomeKit, unfortunately.
I also sent you a message on IG… Hey Shane thanks for sharing all the content. I do have a question though that maybe you’ve experienced. For some reason lately when I leave the house everything in my HomeKit including cameras says no response. It’s fine when I am home but as soon as I leave the home Wi-Fi I can’t view or access anything. This started a week ago. I’ve been watching you and building a smart home for months now. Any advice?
Hey Mike, thanks for watching. Check out this video to see my typical steps for troubleshooting things like this: ua-cam.com/video/pThVayZwvSM/v-deo.html Sounds like an issue with your homekit hubs if everything works when you're at home.

Not sure why Tado never gets mentioned in US videos.
It allows the to have a smart radiator valve in each room communicates with the main thermostat, allowing for to control each room individually.
The ecobee with its sensor and simular solutions are simplicity not accurate.
Last I checked, Tado is not sold in the US... so that would explain it. Most modern homes in the US don't use radiator valves.
Learned a lot thank you

So switchbot allows you to integrate their products into HOMEKIT through their Switchbot HUB otherwise they would not be compatible with HomeKit? Do I understand that right? TIA
Yes via the new SwitchBot Hub 2 with Matter. But currently only the SwitchBot Curtains and Blind Tilt can be integrated into HomeKit thru the hub.
Hey Shane, love your videos. Have you reviewed the Meross HomeKit thermostat?
Thank you. No, I have not reviewed the Meross thermostat.
@@ShaneCreates I just noticed that the only HomeKit one they have is for HV applications/baseboard heat. Probably not of interest to most folks.
Where can i find info on the sensibo air with native homekit?
Shane, If i switch to an ecobee smart thermostat and place the SmartBot Hub2 near my one skylight, can I program the SmartBot's IR transmitter to close may IR operated skylight when either the heater or the A/C turns on? Thanks. PS: I always get so much info from your videos.
Hey Michael, thanks for watching. This wouldn't work natively in homekit since the switchbot's IR capabilities are not exposed to HomeKit, unfortunately.
@@ShaneCreates Thanks for your swift and thorough reply!
I also sent you a message on IG…
Hey Shane thanks for sharing all the content.
Check out this video to see my typical steps for troubleshooting things like this: ua-cam.com/video/pThVayZwvSM/v-deo.html
Sounds like an issue with your homekit hubs if everything works when you're at home.
@@ShaneCreates You are the man!!! I watched your other video and that fixed my problem. Your channel is definitely my go to Smart home channel. Thank you for all you do.
My eco bee thermostat was installed with my furnace. I hate it. Wish they would have left my original thermostat.
Ecobee or nest,nest is better
