What I loved the most about Starship Troopers were the warrior bug design and the sort of simplistic infantry look that still managed to be somehow sci-fi. Loved it, lol.
fun fact: in the book the arachnids were actual arachnids and had guns that shot plasma, although they’re only described in the book without an illustration.
@@draconisthewyvern3664 Also there were "Skinnies", so we basically had Terran, Zerg/Tyranids and Protoss/Eldar.
@@draconisthewyvern3664 Ants, not arachnids, they were described as having the usual worker, warrior and queen castes, and a "brain" supervisor who's death would often kill its subordinates, they were hive bugs, and physically they were described as antlike too, not spiderlike. Their tech was never described as organic either, they were an advanced technological race like the humans they were fighing.
@@davehood2667 the book says they had a ant like society, in describing them though it says “ a madman’s conception of a giant, intelligent spider “
and there is a spider that lives in colonies on earth btw.
the arachnids or more accurately pseudo-arachnids are also described as having a semi-human torso with arms to hold their guns.
In the books as well it was 500 mobile infantry vs 5 million they where in space marine armour and basically Warhammer rip them off

Thats not true they subscribe to the Zapp Brannigan startegy.
"Throw wave after wave of men at it"
Why change a strategy that all the planning and tactics baked in for you. And somehow has worked in the past.
If you shoot at the bugs, and you keep shooting at the bugs, they will eventually run out of bugs
Read the book. Very into planning there, but this looks like it is based on the movie
@@warlordnipple you are aware the 1st movie is almost a parody of the books.
And this is clearly based on the films.
So really only the movies count here.
@@donjean6590 yes, maybe you should have read the second sentence of my comment
The flame thrower guys are the perfect front line, that was absolutely obvious from the very start. They stun and slow the advance.
Started watching and heard the words "Demo is out" and paused it and went to download it.
Been waiting for this game for awhile. Glad a Demo is here.

how's the demo so far for you?
@@smoadia85 not to bad. 3 missions.
@@smoadia85 It's 3 missions. The Line of site mechanic is a big part of the game. I personally would like it to have a tactical pause or a slow-mo mode to issues orders. Cause of the LoS and ur units don't shoot when moving, it is very important on where u place units. I didnt see any way to setup a formation. Unit just line up in a line and if u dont have enough room it's bad cause units cant shoot. IMO game just needs some QoL and UI improvements. The atmoshpere fits the movie with the news vids. I think it could be really fun with those improvements.
“RICO. You know what to do…”
*Rico hits that like and subscribe button
That phrase is some of the worst dubbing I've ever seen in a movie. It's glorious lol
I loved this movie when it came out. I’m so glad someone is doing something with the IP. Perfect for this kind of game!
12:15 100% agree with you on the part about being able to set up a marching formation. Would be a really nice feature, especially without a push pause feature.
The book is fantastic. Wish the mech suits where used more than in the later anime.
They are in the.. was it the third movie. The mechs, that is.
However, it was absolute garbage. Dreadful garbage.
Or rather - First half was.. watchable. Second half was.. some weird religious propaganda bollocks that.. I lack words. Doubt I've ever watched a worse (second-half of a) movie. Like they ran out of money, and sanity.
Not sure if the 2nd movie was better or worse.
The movies were campy parody, and the game seems to be based on the movies so of course they wouldn't have the jumpsuits.
@@lordhefman This looks very similar to another Starship Troopers game Microprose made in the early/mid 90s. Mix of regular troops and Mecha. I really liked that game and still have the cd-rom for it. Both of the games have a call back to the movies. Most people im sure, are much more familiar with the movies than the book. Just the book has the cooler toys Imo.
@@Nightykk Well said. That gave me a weird sort of Dune-esque vibe but poorly executed. Like if Paul was Krusty the clown and spice was space trooper rifle ammo or something.
@@ilovedetails Yes! This game was fantastic. Came out in 2000 and was a little clunky but otherwise great.
I love Starship Troopers. It's surprising that it took them this long to make a game about it.
Fun fact - there was a board game from 1976 that is based on the Heinlein's book. The game even had the Skinnies - unlike the movie. :\
@@orecruncher7930 there also was a pretty cool squad based game too on the pc. Forgot what it was called.
@@mirrormonstere113 Starship troopers : Terran ascendancy ?
there have been shooter games in starship troopers, there have been a bunch of starship trooper games.
just not recently
Remember Marauder?
I'd like to point out the officer during the first mission agrees with your criticism of the lack of defenses for the settlement.
I missed the scream "MEDIIIIIC!!!!" for every dead trooper
Game looks fun as hell, loved the movie. Definitely reminds me a bit of avp extinction which needs a remaster or a sequel now more than ever.
Oh man this looks like an absolute blast. It looks like there's been a great deal of attention to details like how the bugs eventually climb over the walls because of the mound of corpses piling up. I'm so hyped thanks Splatt' !
They can climb it the whole time, that's what they're trying to do.
One of my favourite games of all time was Starship Troopers Terran Ascendancy, and this has a huge amount of that vibe and it makes me so excited. I binged the demo last night for like 3 hours
That was a truly excellent game. If I remember correctly, you kept your troops and gear between missions and they got better as they got more experience, to the point that later missions could get hillariously slanted in your favour.
@@TheCalantyr it's amazing! You nailed it. I actually replayed it recently but I modified the levels to make the amount bugs hilariously high, though albeit with some of the advanced tech
In hindsight, Terran Ascendancy was an incredible game. I didn't appreciate how good it was at the time. It's freeware now and always worth picking up again. If this game is half as good, it will be a fun one.
@@TheCalantyr yea and you can change the troopers' name so you can set up your own squad and keep them through the entire campaign. when I heard about this game I went and redownloaded the freeware version

It is painful watching him play very often...
This line of sight mechanic needs some tweaking. Way too many times I had units just standing there doing nothing when there was a clear view of enemy without anyone in front of them. Same with the spitter bugs and their amazing ability to shoot through cliff walls and buildings.
Edit: spelling
Yup, that annoyed me too quite a bit in the demo. Especially at the chokepoint to the north-east after that forward base (around where Splats video ended). The spitter bugs could shoot round the corners but my troops couldn't shoot back without getting too close. :/
But hey, they got until March to fix that.
I really like the LoS mechanic. Makes the game more tactical rather than ppl just spamming 'attack move' like in most rts game. Once I understood that units cant move & shoot, where & WHEN I decide to move them becomes key. Also obviously, gotta keep my squads spread out. Nagivating through narrow pathways requires smart maneuvering. This demo was fun as hell. Completed the 1st mission with zero casualties. Din have time to complete the 2nd mission before they pulled the demo. 😭
@@kimmycat2977 yea, it's fun but needs tweaking, the second part of the demo really shows a lot of the flaws due to the constant need for micromanaging. If you forget a squad that you had set on sentry duty you could come back later with them being slowly chipped away by a single spitter sitting around the corner from them, so that wasn't very cool :/ hopefully they patch that quickly.
@@Twisty112289 Yea they've got 5 months to iron out the kinks. Speaking of which, Im hoping snipers wud prioritize killing special bugs rather than the warrior bugs. Cuz the game tells us to deploy snipers to deal with the spitters, but the snipers just seem to shoot watever's closest. So the spitters who stay behind the pack has alr racked up a body count by the time the snipers get to them. Also hoping cover & elevation factor into shielding against spitter projectiles. Love that the flying bugs kamikaze crash when killed, just like in the movie.
My major issue is that the game keeps softlocking during cutscenes or crashing or something on the big mine mission.
Then again I tend to be cautious and take a few hours to finish that one.
I love the infantry death animations! Cut in half crawling away I can't wait for this. I loved playing the old one all the time in Jr high
I'm not going to lie, starship troopers is one of my favorite movies from when I was a kid too...
When he mentioned Buenos Aires I almost shed it tear...
I've always been more of a fan of the Book then the Movie. I read the book years before the movie came out, and it's one of the best stories of Space Warfare ever written. One of the things that they never even tried to do in the movie that was a Major part of the book was the Powered Armor. It was too expensive to do as an effect at the time, so they scrapped it. The book was more of a Heartbreak Ridge type of story, where lots of the book was dedicated to the training of the Army. One thing they commented on in the book was that one for one a member of the Powered Infantry was more powerful then a Soldier Bug. But it took six months to train a member of the Infantry, while a Soldier Bug could just be hatched and know what to do with little training. As to the Beunos Aires remark, it became a Battle Cry in the war, because in the book, the Bugs aimed an Asteroid at Earth, and it hit and destroyed Beunos Aires.
I wish I would have read the book first. The Terran government is portrayed as a sort of parody of the fascistic military centric WW2 era style. I've heard that the books explain more about what their government actually is, where it's the exact opposite of fascism in that the public and private sector are completely removed from each other. It's why Rico's dad wanted him to just join the family business. You don't need to vote and all that boring shit, just come be rich like me!
The movie never did that justice.
In the movie, at best the bugs hitting Earth is an accident, at worst Carmen redirected it on purpose. Not only that, it's just some random asteroid, not from Klendathu, considering that Klendathu is on the other side of the galaxy and the bugs don't have technology in the movie.
In reality though, the director just didn't read the book and didn't think about the scifi details. Still created a decent movie, but it's not nearly as well thought out as the book
@@jangtheconqueror The movie was, by the director's own statements, his interpretation and he never read the actual book. I see a lot of online talk about how the Federation are the bad guys and whatnot. Completely ignoring the book.
The bugs don't communicate with the Federation. It's like coming across a colony of giant ants and expecting to have a parley.
@@gogeta667 the movie never did it justice because the director was more interested in slandering the author as a fascist and pretending the federation was a fascist state and it was sopose to be a “parody” of the book
@@gogeta667 no the bugs definitely can communicate, they just aren’t interested in sharing space with humans.
also it’s implied the federation stepped on the bugs first before the asteroid thing, because you don’t set up a quarantine/warning area for no reason meaning the federation had direct contact with them before hand.
and eventually the bugs got tired of the constant intrusions.
i mean launching a campaign of gen-o-cide and enslavement against humanity is a bit of an over reaction but okay.
My goodness. One of my favorite movies of all time!
RICOS ROUGHNECKS!
Cant wait to get this!
The CGI was incredible for a Movie from 1997.
Already a fail when he asked "do you understand?" instead of "do you get me?"
@FATEd Pondera I wouldn't know, but I figured if they say it the way they do in the movie, it's going to be like that for everyone in the military
In the book star ship troopers, everyone had a suit of powerarmor and a "Jump pack"(they didn't do this for the movie because the actors could not act in the armor). Also, the war with the bugs kicks off because the Humans attack a planet with an Alien race called "The skinnies". The Skinnies were friends to the bugs and asked the bugs to fight us for them because they were losing. The whole thing is an Allegory for how terrible wars are and how messy things can get.
Seems like a promising game, reminds me of Ground Control. Hoping to see more games in the Starship Troopers universe
The phrase "nade the bughole" made me chuckle.

Slitherine's & Matrix's 'track record' has been more than pretty good for many years...imho.

This sort of thing is why I subbed to your channel. Woulda never known if you hadn't done this and I saw it through the subscription! Already downloaded. Love your energy and commentary and 'dive-in' attitude!
I loves Starship troopers, this game looks really cool, like a good SC2 replacement.
Couple things I noticed:
1 - game seems to lag and freeze a lot, I guess it is ok for a demo/beta, hope it gets fixed
2 - Didn't like how slow the arachnids are, the big thing about them is that they move fast and swarm and overwhelm you. I wish they moved waaaay faster
Did u play demo? That was my initial gripe too, until I played it. Bugs move way faster than ur squads. They close the distance on u real fast & ur units cant outrun them. I think they just need to tweak the bugs' movement animation. The actual movement speed is fine tho.
@@kimmycat2977 thanks! I didn't play the demo, I was speaking just from seeing the video
@@kimmycat2977 I think you're right, I've been watching this thinking that the bugs move too slow as well, but it could just be a matter of making the animations a little faster on the legs as they walk.
FINALLY. I've been waiting for exactly this game since 1997.
LOVED THE BOOK. Probably my favorite book I have ever read. movies. Movies were watchable at best.
Starship Troopers is one of the nostalgic movies for me so I'll have to play this someday.
I discovered this before you plopped it on here, and i swear.. i have.. NEVER added something to my wishlist/follow so fast.
Starship Troopers is a great movie and a better book.
And a fantastic animated series.
I need to see like billions of bugs, like in the movie.
lul, the movie hardly had millions, let alone billions.
I can't believe it, starship troopers is one of my all time favorite movies too! I've never heard anyone say this besides me lol
Man I am SO excited for this game.
Favorite movie as a kid (loves the sci fi series) but the first movie has a special place in my heart . My dad looked exactly like Johnny Rico .
tell me you saw the cartoon one . was a good show closer to the book than the movie.
Do you mean the CGI series, Starship Troopers: Roughnecks? Because that series was great, except for the part where the budget got cut (and then cancelled) before they finished the show.
yes there was also a cartoon from 80s I believe.
I've been looking forward to a new SST RTS since Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendency (and really sad that there hasn't been ANYTHING since!). I enjoyed this demo and it's shown a lot of promise, but a few things in it "bugged" me (oh the puns just write themselves).
1) No marching sounds for your troops - it's oddly silent as you march into battle, which also leads into..
2) No chatter from your troops - we should have some unit chatter to make the units feel 'alive'
3) No crazy bug noises or chirps - like #2, but for the bugs.
4) Gun sounds 'feel' pretty weak - I want to hear those Morita's go DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA! Some more pronounced audio for the underslung shotguns, and the HMG positions could really use some really "punchier" sounds too.
5) Some general animation issues that look a bit sloppy - the flamethrowers often look like they are idling while hosing bugs with fire juice.
With that said, the 3rd/final mission of this demo was a lot of fun. Having to defend your base from constant bug attacks, while going out on the offensive to clear bug nests to claim new mines was a nice balance of offense/defense. Really hoping the game gets some extra passes of polish before it's released, because I'm already looking forward to the release
seems a pretty budget rts by the gfx so id not expect it to get all the nice little touches like that
@@elevown Yea I think it's only $30 - so definitely a budget title. I'm hoping that if they don't "fix" some of those perceived issues, that at the very least they allow easy support for modders to change animations, models/sprites and sound files.
Never thought that actual Starship Troopers game will be less Starship Troopers than Helldivers
I have strong vibes of ground control here, like it.
In case you missed it. The blue bar opposite to the health bar is the grenade cool down.
Your channel is also the reason my already long Steam wishlist keeps growing. ;)
If they made a novel accurate game, it may run the risk of being nearly impossible to beat lol.
Mission 1: survive boot camp
Yea it’s almost like sending ground troops with futuristic FALs isn’t a good idea!
Didn't the novel have powered Armor and man portable tac nukes?
@@killcat1971 it did
@@killcat1971 And every soldier had basically auto-reloading M320s. That fact that the films turned an interesting cast system of Citizen vs. Civilian into basically a Nazi regime of Xenophobes just feels wrong. But I'm sure this has been ranted about ever since the first film released lol.
Starship Troopers is the second best sci fi ever made. Only warhammer 40,000 is above it. It's so underappreciated and deserves far more media than it currently has.
Cliched I know, but the book is a lot more interesting. The movie is good in it's own way, but the two are only remotely connected.
Haven't read the book, but I hear the movie is more or less mocking the fascist nature of the book.
there was a theory on the internet about how the movie version actually foreshadowed 9/11 and the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq
Starship Troopers: Roughnecks FTW.
@@flerperderp2094 Except there's nothing fascist in the book and the movie's director hasn't even read it.

Have you read the book yet? For being written in 1959 the author did a down right amazing job of guessing what modern battlefield tech would look like. Right down to wrist computers, squad communications, HUD... Movie does a decent job; but book is still awesome.
Now this looks interesting. Hope they refine the controls a bit more like you pointed out so you can make formations, pause and plan, etc. Keeping an eye on this one :)
I like not having a pause mechanic. Makes the experience more harrowing & thrilling. Pausing mid combat is ironic in a Real-Time Strategy game, no?

Major butt movement 😂😂 but splats starship troopers quotes is funny.
Accidentally getting my squads eaten by bugs is what made me the man I am today.
Damn! I always hoped they'd make a game out of this, previously we only had starcraft mods for Starship troopers. When I was a kid I went to the video rental shop for the first Star Wars movie and the lady gave me a tape with Starship troopers instead, and I was not disappointed.
I love how The bugs lore wise knew of humans but didn't give a shit till the humans started murdering bugs then thats when real issues started to happen
I love the first movie so when I heard there was a game coming I got excited. I hope they can polish it some more as it feels a little under-cooked currently. The combat doesn't seem very fleshed out yet. Hopefully they can fix little issues like that then I'll definitely get it!
i'm very surprised for the lack of nades usage in the first 15 min of gameplay. i mean, i seen splatt play warhammer, he doesn't restrain himself AT ALL in the use of Heavy Ordenance. besides that the game looks dope.
The UI, controls and graphic in general look clunky AF. I've seen World In Conflict and Company of Heroes 1 mods did a far better jobs than this.

Any one watched the old 3d cartoon? That was fun only remember the one dude having psychic powers so he can pop heads of bugs and sence them. Hmm maybe ill rewatch it.
Starship Troopers: Roughnecks. Great series, but it sadly got cancelled before the campaign was finished. This series is what the books were like. Power Armor and (very small numbers of) Psionic users. The movies, while awesome, were not at all like the books.
@19:44 YEAH! Hell march! Right on!
Love the movie references in the commentary... keep up the great work man.
The movie was awesome dont get me wrong (even if its inaccurate as shit) but the cartoon was better imo. Wish they remake it since the animation is so dated.
Yay another person who seen the cartoon. I can only remember the guy who have psychic powers that pop bug heads. I think he did the same like in the 3rd movie.
*CGI
They probably won't, but they could build up a really compelling small unit tactics game from this.
If they added fatigue, morale and stress, they could do a lot.
Having your troops in 'high ready' would slow their movement, allow them to shoot on the move, but also increase stress and fatigue. 'Low ready' would allow them to move at decent speed and react to contact, but not shoot on the move. 'No ready' would allow them to move fast and at low stress (although some fatigue). It should take time to transition up the readiness chain. If the unit gets caught below where they need to be and it needs to transition readiness before you tell them (bugs come in to sight range when they are in 'No ready', or in to firing range in 'Low' or 'No'), there would be a stress penalty and a knock to morale. Knocking down bugs would decrease stress and boost morale, reducing the effects of fatigue, the opposite for losing squadmates.
Different units should have different operational ranges. Infantry should be okay with bugs at far and near ranges, but not very close where rifles are less effective. That should reduce morale and increase stress. Flamethrowers however should get a stress reduction and morale increases as enemies approach. Slow-firing or crew-operated units like machine gun crew or sniper or anti-tank teams would have the opposite preference. Units in sight of each other should gain morale when their fellows attack the same target.
Units should also be able to alter their pose between standing, kneeling and prone. Standing is least accurate and most fatiguing, but they can start moving immediately and dodge enemy melee best, with each different pose increasing accuracy but decreasing fatigue and dodge. Prone units can be shot over. Kneeling can be shot over if the shooting unit is on a small rise and standing only when on a ridgeline or hill.
It would be somewhat like the old Close Combat games as it would require you to keep an eye on not only the tactical situation, but also to work with your units. If a unit is getting stressed out from lots of close fighting, pull it back and let it provide security to a different unit that goes on the front line. As the volume of bugs increases, slowly leapfrog your units back, keeping the bugs in infantry's preferred range and swapping stress and fatigue while maintaining morale as the units support each other.
Swapping ammo and equipment as suggested would also provide a neat dimension. Maybe your grenadiers could have HE and flechette rounds. At range they lob HE, but as the bugs run in the grenadiers take a knee and swap to flechette and bust them up in melee.
Modeling stress would also make brain bugs that much more dangerous. If they could affect your units' states, keeping a sound and tight advance, security and fire lanes would be more and more important.
.. but.. that would likely be well off from what they're doing, here. It would be neat, though.
This game is pretty well executed
Goddamn bugs whacked us Johnny!
This game looks fantastic for a game from 1999.
This game seems to nail the satirical tone and cheerfulness-at-horrific-warcrimes mood of the film.
This would be even better with “Empire ate War” style overview galactic map, with this style battle gameplay.
Oh man, they did the "do you want to know more?" thing
My friend... life is all about L shaped ambushes than you go from there with the equipment you got.
This game looks great. Has the same vibe as the RTS Star Wars game, forget the name but was fun at the time.
There’s actually more than one. Three that I’ve played. Force Commander way back when, Galactic Battlegrounds (based on age of empires 2), and Empire at War (which had you fighting on the ground and in space). I think EaW would be the most similar at least in the ground battle mode, with the vague squad mechanics, capture areas providing benefits, and very localised construction with the turret slots.
I'd love to see a game based on the book someday. It makes sense to take out the "mobile" part of "mobile infantry" for a live action movie, but for a videogame it seems like you're taking out the coolest part for no fucking reason. I don't think they ever once use guns in the book... everything is rockets and bombs and the flamer.
