A very sad marker is the mass grave of the ten nuns who were killed in the 1900 storm at the beach side orphanage. It's located in Calvary Cemetery just off 61st Street. NJ Clayton and family are buried nearby to that one.
Were the children who the nuns tied to them buried with them?
It does not seem morbid in the least to take a picnic lunch and visit with loved ones in mausoleums. I visit the remains of my relatives often in the cemetery and I've had lunch there several times
I have read such picnicking was common before public parks were created.
This was fantastic! I've met Kathleen a few times and she is genuinely the sweetest person you'll ever meet. Her knowledge about Galveston is so impressive and adds so much to not only the history of the island, but also to the history of Texas.
Yes! She’s the best! Be sure to check out the video Kathleen and I made about the Tremont! ua-cam.com/video/2evVNF9G-Qw/v-deo.htmlsi=UdOQz6vDDsob4EKh
@@galvestonunscripted Thank you! I will! Slowly going through your channel. Lots of great info.
I miss Galveston. Spent every summer there when i was growing up. Then started taking my own kids when they were little
Thanks! I am an historian that lives in Texas City and I love this type of presentation as it is easy for people to digest and learn.
Hey, thank you so much for the super thanks!!! I appreciate you! Because of people like you, I am able to make this kind of content!
A SINCERE THANK YOU!!

Thanks for posting. Always drove past but never explored it.
I would have loved to see the graves of the Maceo, Kempner, Sealy and Moody families! The movers and shakers of old Galveston! Time to make another video! This was great!
The Maceo's are entombed in Hitchcock.....right off Highway 6
I have always loved the cemetery district. Kathleen is a great guide!
Totally agree!
An excellent video covering fascinating cemeteries! 👍
We are taught in Freemasony that a broken column symbolizes a life cut short. In our symbolism there is usually a winged angel weeping over the top of the column... 😢
Thanks for watching!!
I love and miss so much about Galveston, my hometown. Thank you all so much for the great video and showing love to such a precious place. I do miss the oaks that lined Broadway and made it so beautiful and Victorian.
I spend a lot of time photographing the monuments and it’s very peaceful.
So informative! I have spent a lot of time in “Resting Communities” and I learned so much in this video. I graduated from UTMB Galveston and have passed this cemetery so many times. I have always wanted to stop and walk through it.
Great video J.R.! I remember Kathleen showing our tour group that there were fences around many family plots and most are now buried due to the grade raisings. However, there are some tops of the posts still showing above the ground.
Thanks Aaron! Kathleen is so knowledgeable! I LOVED this tour so much.
Not morbid at all. My daughter and I love walking thru cemeteries when we visit other towns. Getting steps and learning about the people and local community before we'd have a small picnic.
I really enjoyed this. Thank you. Going to spread the word on your channel
Thanks for watching! Please do!
Another interesting episode. Looking forward to the next one!
THANKS!!
Kathleen rocks.
Yes she does!!
One of my favorite places of serenity on the island; Aside from the Hays Park at 23rd and Broadway, as well as the fountain memorial on the side of trinity episcopal.
Yes. Beautiful place. Here is a tour of Trinity from last year! ua-cam.com/video/R-7h54-N55w/v-deo.htmlsi=beglse76OFM9atE2
This was Wonderful ! Thank you for your love and interest in Galveston.
Thanks for watching!!
You have done a super job with all your videos.... entertaining and informative ....and I am a native growing up on the coast. We bypass so much in route to the beach or restaurants. It's time to appreciate it all. Sir, you are on your way to awards for your work. Thanks for all you have done. Love the Confederate shout out....time to tell the real truth.
Great episode!
Thanks so much Johnny!
I am so glad I found your channel! Great information. Love it and the background music does not interfere a bit.
Very interesting!
It’s even better in person!
Absolutely outstanding video sir. Thank you. These kinds of informative videos are hard to find.
Thanks for watching!!
Great video! I’ve always been so curious about this cemetery!
Thank you for watching!!!
I used to ride my bike in the cemetery when I was a kid
My parents are there and my Godfather. Well done video
Wow. That’s amazing. Thank you so, so much.
@@galvestonunscripted see you at Redlight Roasters again sometime. Take a care.
and what these people paid for monuments then couldn't pay for that now INSANE RIP ALL
I always wondered why the mausoleums are so short. Riding down Broadway as a youngster in the '70s I recall there were a LOT more of those short little houses (perhaps four times as many). I guess with no one around to front big bucks on repairs after a storm the city has to demolish it and put the people in a hole.
Me and the company I used to work for re-did plumbing underslab By houses or duplex beside graveyard there
How much do you think a zinc tombstone cost back then?
No clue!!!
Did she show you the Alberti family plot?
Hey that’s not nice I resent that, I’m a goth who loves the history of cemeteries and could wonder around there all day and enjoy looking at the graves. I watch a wonderful UA-cam channel called #FacesOfTheForgotten who does very neat stories about cemeteries.
She said,"If you were dressed as a Goth and sitting disrespectfully on a headstone....." I also love Faces of the Forgotten
@@acheartist Lol. Yeah there have been times when I’ve visited that cemetery and have had to sit down to take a break because Texas is hot. 🥵 Of course not on a headstone. Cemeteries are beautiful places I could hang out in all day. I’m an odd one.
ua-cam.com/video/S1FdMMpfkws/v-deo.html
I don’t speak Portuguese, but that cemetery is great
Why the music? I found it very distracting and took away from the interview. Was it necessary? Very annoying.
You’re hired. Please watch the rest of the videos on the channel and comment how each could be improved. You’re def the one for the job.
Once again, annoying background 'music', had to stop watching. Otherwise, it's a very interesting video.
😂
Mute + closed captioning = happiness.
