The Problem with "BUG FIGHTS"
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лип 2021
- Videos where two of more arthropods are placed into an enclosure and forced to fight one another are all over UA-cam and other video-sharing platforms. I'm sure many animal enthusiasts oppose them for moral reasons, and understandably so. But in addition, and in stark contrast to what the uploaders of these videos often state, they also do not represent how natural conflicts would take place, and that is what this video will delve into a little more deeply.

“Study the behaviour of a crayfish and scorpion if they met”
I couldn’t imagine when a scorpion is going to run into a crayfish in the wild
Maybe in the Amazon
A lot of places in the south eastern US have semi terrestrial crayfish and scorpions at the same locations. I say it is possible.
I'd like to imagine that this friendly green fella is the one talking to us about the cruelty of bug fights
Haha, if only I had some professional editing software (and a lot more time), I'd have edited the katydid's mouth to move in sync with my dialog.
Well done for taking the moral high-ground on this appalling trend. I used to click on links to watch what was claimed to be natural predation, but was disturbed and annoyed at the flagrant cruelty of the forced, unnatural conflicts. I wish I could up-vote this video more than once.
I'm glad I made this video. Haven't seen any other invert channels discussing this yet.
the problem with "bug fights": their existence
The fact these same people have taken it a step further to start using stuff like mice and reptiles is fucking horrific
And yet somehow UA-cam still allows it, as long as they put a cheap "it's educational" disclaimer at the beginning. It's sickening.
@@BugsandBiology meanwhile some random youtuber says a bad word and gets wiped off the platform forever. Gotta love it
Priorities, am I right?
The only “education” one is monster bug wars
@@WetBread-ck6vythats still isnt natural
“Seriously, they are absolute units”
-Bugs and Biology
I’m glad someone is addressing the bug war problem with UA-cam, but I guess invertebrates are to creepy to most people to consider their lives meaningful
Yeah people only care about the "cute" animals.
Vegans don't care about killing plants either. "They don't feel pain"
Oh, yeah, yeah they do. Physiological response to injury doesn't end when a Granola's opinion begins.
@@BugsandBiology I think centipedes, tarantulas, and scorpions are cute
Man kills puppy : sad
Spider dies:it’s the best day ever 🎶 @@BugsandBiology
I always get these bug fights recommendations and after seeing just one I was disgusted.
Yeah same here. No idea why UA-cam allows that kind of thing.
@@BugsandBiology @howtocookthat said the same thing with 5 minute crafts
@@theaussiebuglover1028 And don't even get me started on those "top 10/fact" channels.
Glad that this problem is being called out. I mean really. Animalfights are illegal in so many places, and I do not see how this is different.
On a positive sidenote, watching your animals (as far as I got they are yours) just chilling, while you are talking relaxed about a subject was surprisingly therapeutic and I do hope to see more of that!
Yeah UA-cam needs to sort out its priorities. Swear too much? Demonetized! Post videos of animals being forced to kill each other? Here, have millions of views!
And yeah, the animals being shown are my own. The green katydid is a Phyllophorella queenslandica, the huntsman is Typostola barbata, and the last, spiky katydid is Phricta spinosa.
I completely agree with you , these people should be arrested for bug cruelty , bugs can also feel pain too . They just throw 2 random bugs into the closures to force them fight and say it's for science , which is really piss me off !!!! 😡😠🤬
Yeah I hate how they say it's about education. There's nothing informative whatsoever about watching two animals that may never even meet in the wild running around in a container.
I saw one video where it forced a P mettalica, a H venatoria with an eggsac, and a mantis to fight. Its sickening that they would make a critically endangered animal and a animal with eggs to fight.
Oh that's absolutely awful. Glad I never came across that video.
As Much as loved Science channel’s Monster Bug Wars growing up, many of the fights were so one side it was stupid, but the cries were hilarious 😂
The cockroach vs tarantula was one of the funniest in terms of sheer one-sidedness. Was borderline hilarious hearing them making it out as though it was actually going to be a fight as opposed to just a tarantula feeding clip.
I guess, one may argue its "educational" in the sense that it shows how these two animals would react to each other in a stressed environment
Thank you for finally saying something about these bug wars. Over the years I've been saying that this was such a waste of the beautiful insects being forced into some Collesium effect from back in the Roman days. Heck for that matter we still have idiots still pitting dogs and Cocks against each other to the death. It's ashame that it is so popular among some people. What ashame that our society thinks it is exciting.
Thank you for your voice in this disgusting matter !!!!
underrated video, this is one of the most disgusting things i've seen on youtube and it sucks that when youtube gauges the fact that you like insects, they spam recommend you abuse and misinformation
Thanks for the comment, I honestly forgot I posted this video until now.
But yeah, once UA-cam sees you're interested in inverts, your feed just gets beset with fights and silly top 10 videos.
@@BugsandBiology fr bruh its super unfortunate, reporting for misinformation and animal abuse wont get the videos taken down either, which is appalling considering it directly breaks their TOS
I've only succeeded with really, overtly cruel ones such as burning a tarantula alive and putting a centipede in acid. There was/is a thread on Arachnoboards.com where people would post cruel videos to be mass-reported, and it was surprisingly successful.
But of course, sadly UA-cam seems to care more about punishing people for swearing or using a copyrighted song than animal cruelty.
@@BugsandBiology wtf those were videos??? Bruh how were those ever given the A-Okay to go up on the platform, it reminds me of techrax's video where he poured molten aluminum on hissers
and yeah its wild, they need to get their priorities straight for sure
Thank you for raising this! I hate this shit and that YT seems totally indifferent to it.
Also, your Jimmy Carr laugh was spot-on lol
Thanks! Yeah I've been complimented on my Jimmy impression a few times...
@@BugsandBiology Rightly so! Have shared the vid to my socials (with due commentary on what differentiates these from feeding vids). I don't have a massive following or anything but hopefully it will be just one brick in the wall of drawing some overdue scrutiny to this sort of ghoulish content.
Who needs a staged bug fight when you get blessed with being a witness to a spider’s hunt.
Some days ago, I saw a video of a mantis and a camel spider. The mantis was killed and the spider lost its vision. This helped me realize how bad are those videos.
I seen that one and I hate it so much
Arena fights with mammals, reptiles, or birds: HOW COULD YOU SHOW THOSE POOR ANIMALS GETTING ABUSED?!
Arena fights with arthropods: Oh look how cool this fight is :3
A surprisingly large number of people are unaware of the fact that arthropods are animals.
@@BugsandBiology Amazing, isn't it, how such bias can cloud people to factual information. I mean, hell, when it comes to sponges and anemones, I can kinda understand them mistaking those for plants, since those guys literally just sit there filter-feeding, but ARTHROPODS? They are so clearly animals! XD
I think it's possible some people make the mistake of thinking "animal" is synonymous with "mammal". That or they just have no knowledge of zoology.
Like you said, it's easy to understand why someone would think sponges, corals or anemones aren't animals, but it seems pretty obvious arthropods are.
@@BugsandBiology I think the word "animal" has some kind of psychological synonymy with "cute" to some people. If it's not cute, it's not an animal!
But yeah, zoology is just too complex for people out of touch with nature.
Agreed completely. I like to say, if people only care about fluffy animals, then they don't love animals, they love plushies.
There's also the fact that everyone wants to be seen as an "animal lover" as it often suggests you're a good person, and admitting that arthropods are animals would mean acknowledging they hate a very significant portion of the animal kingdom.
It’s so cruel because people think that only humans and maybe dogs, cats, and possibly cetaceans have feelings and people just think of invertebrates as well as reptiles and amphibians as mindless killing machines out to get you. A giant centipede is no different than a lion besides appearance. They are both predators and need to eat. I’m glad people are addressing the problem with bug fights.
That Jimmy Carr impression was pretty spot on.
2 years later, this video needs more views…
Wait there's staged Arthopod fights on YT?! I thought this video was gunna be on the nature documentaries that just happen to feature this sorta combat occurring naturally... but staging them... what in the fuck is wrong with some people. This really makes my blood boil
They're all over UA-cam and other video sharing platforms.
Great video. Stand behind you on this.
And I love meat! Difference? I don't torture my food, force it to die painfully. I get to continue to live. Why force these animals to endure pain for your entertainment??? Ants vs beetles, lions against crocodile. Needless.
Yep, the old scorpion vs lobster in the wild.
It always does seem like Scorpions always have an advantage in these fights for one reason or another, glad you went into more details. It’s fairly easy to tell the fights aren’t in natural conditions with how the animals act, and in certain cases it seems like the person who caused it directly intervenes.
While I must admit I have wondered which Arthropods might come out on top against others (in particular Goliath Birdeaters vs Emperor Scorpions/Amazon Centipedes), the way these fights take place means that the outcome is generally not fair for one side as you explained in more detail.
Yeah I think it’s natural to wonder who’d come out on top between some of the invert world’s most fearsome predators, and it can be interesting to speculate. But staging unfair fights and then marketing them as educational content isn’t the way to go. Especially since so many of those bug fight channels misidentify the combatants.
Yeah, I always searched of insects, arachnids, and centipede fighting, killing, and eating each other
These videos are animal cruelty, doesn’t matter if they are insects or spiders they are animals. I saw a thumbnail of a Goliath bird eater getting eaten by an African bullfrog. It’s not like Goliath bird eaters are endangered in the wild, but hey it’s just a spider who needs more of those… god I hate these channels. Thanks for talking about them.
It also puts the pet you're feeding at unnecessary risk. Like, why would you feed your pet frog a tarantula with huge fangs and urticating hairs that has all the potential to injure it when you could just use roaches like a normal person?
@@BugsandBiology A sidestep from the video but the comment you replied to is from a neo nazi with a neo nazi symbol as a profile picture and neo nazi description is his about channel page. I’m really interested in insects, but as a person of color it’s uncomfortable to see Nazis engage in a community I’d like to be part of.

Holy fuck that last katydid looks amazing what is it called
Phricta spinosa. Honestly one of the less impressive Phricta species.
What about a pair of starving predatory arthropods out in the wild? Like ones that desperately need to eat, and just happen to come across each other and are desperate? Like Scolopendra subspinipes and Heterometrus longimanus? Those seem more likely to encounter each other
If it's in the wild, it's fine. Nature is nature. Pretty much the whole point of this video was that these staged fights are completely unnatural.
Just leaving a comment to help with the UA-cam algorithm!
I agree with this video completely, I hate the whole 'bug fight' trend
What are your thoughts on the show monster bug wars, it is obviously staged I mean I’ve never seen them show a background it’s always black or covered, but it does seem that they try to replicate a natural situation the best they can, and the animals do seem to act pretty normal.
My thoughts are essentially the same as yours, and there's some educational value too, as the two experts generally give pretty accurate information. My main problem with MBW is the exaggerated narration style and the fact that they often overhype inverts that stand literally no chance (like, come on, cockroach vs tarantula?).
It rubs the algorithm on its skin or it gets the hose again
If only my right ear could listen to this great advice.
It's an unfortunate issue several of my subscribers seem to deal with, and I have no idea what's causing it.
I was scrolling through the recommendations for videos from this video, and monster bug wars was one of them
Honestly I don't have that big of a problem with MBW. Cause at least they're filmed in natural setups. My main issue with that show is the exaggerated narration, repeatedly comparing the animals to serial killers/murderers.
@@BugsandBiology Maybe exaggerated narration but can't ignore the bite or sting of them as they are dangerous, just saying.
@@viewing9754 Most of the animals in MBW were either low-risk or completely harmless to humans, with a couple exceptions such as the funnelweb and wandering spider. And even then, I don't think it's apt to compare an animal that hunts to survive and may defend itself if provoked, to a serial killer.
Good for you for exposing this cruel practice for what it is: it serves to delight idiots who care nothing for other living beings and maybe other humans. It is sadistic in the extreme. I'd call it downright evil. Thank you for this video. I hope others pay attention to it and refuse to patronize these videos, and perhaps even let the makers of these videos know that what they are doing is dead wrong.
I enjoy the theoretical child pursuit of my bug could beat up your bug, but to actually entertain these fights in the real world is inhumane, tragic, and more monstrous then the supposed monster bugs
It's that kind of videos that really make me wish it were possible to block specific channels from showing up in search results. If I want to look for videos about pet arthropod care, or terrarium setups, the last thing I want to see is some cool animals stuck in a box and forced to pointlessly maim and kill each other for no reason. Like - yeah, youtube, when I'm trying to find videos of people taking care of their pets, I REALLY want to see some animal cruelty.
That said, man that photo of centipedes congregating to avoid a flood was incredible. I've never seen anything like that. Great example of how natural behavior is infinitely more interesting anyways.
Absolutely agree. Hate getting these videos all over my feed.
As for those photos of the centipedes avoiding floodwaters, they basically blew my mind when I first saw them. I can only imagine what I'd do there if I had a small boat and a few spare containers handy haha.
Some of your analogies are fantastic Xd
Thanks mate, great upload as usual. Thanks for addressing this topic, the videos you speak of couldn't be any farther from educational! Nice Jimmy impression, too!
Cheers! Always hated these fights, and it irks me when people say they're educational.
Thank you for speaking out
I cant bring myself to watch anything like this, it's vile that youtube even allow this kind of content. To most people, they're just "bugs", but to us they're far more than that.
Yeah, and as someone else in the comments said, some UA-cam creators get punished for swearing in their videos, yet blatant animal cruelty is somehow perfectly fine, as long as you put a crappy "educational" disclaimer somewhere.
Yeah, I've always been surprised they allow those on youtube. It's definitely different than recording stuff fighting you just happen to catch. But youtube lets people upload videos of people torturing baby monkeys, so they don't care.
You should make another video talking about this, where you talk about the Japanese bug fight videos. Such as Stag Beetles winning against every bug they're up against, Mantids losing 90% of the time, and Water Bugs being out of water.
Centipedes really just want to hug.
someone get this man a Jimmy Carr shirt.
Who’s Jimmy Carr ?
@@mypetsandme9473 He's a comedian known, among other things, for his very distinctive laugh which I have imitated in several videos.
Thank you for posting this
There is a CGI one that is so over the top its hilarious. Full on monster sounds and everything. But those are CGI recreations. The real fights are fricken disgusting and horrifying.
Is that Monster Bug Wars you're taking about or something else?
Best part of qld floods last time i was up there was all the spiders and snakes hanging on the tops of fences and power poles
4:58 Those poor nope ropes are just trying to survive from drowning. 🙁
I hate these channels so much. If they let animals like dogs or cats fight to death, most people would complain. But "Bugs" are somehow considered "lesser animals" and these channels have lots of view, so there is money to make. Thanks for making a video about it.
Cheers, yeah it's absolutely sickening. Anything for views, even if it involves forcing animals to kill eachother for the heck of it.
I don't get bug fights in my recommendations because this is the only invertebrate channel I watch. But I do see other animal fighting content. I always get recommendations of dogs/cats mutilating and killing wildlife. Their owners and followers actually think it's cute. It's truly disgusting, and so many people appear to enjoy it.
feedings are fine but these are cruel
Thing with feedings is they don't put the pet at risk, and they also take place in a more "natural" setup (the pet's enclosure) rather than an empty container. Plus feeding is completely necessary.
The only one I've watched was the "Monster Bugs Wars" or something like that, it's by Discovery or whoever.
scorpions are also basically blind compared to tarantulas. in nature the tarantula will just quickly grab the scorpion and it’s over. not much fighting going on there.
In the open, a centipede in the hunt is unstoppable. There are videos of them killing tarantulas, scorpions, and whatever. Agility seems to be the most important thing in order to bite first. Interestingly, in the case of the scorpion, one video shows the centipede destroying its tail first like it is on purpose but maybe it is just coincidence. Centipedes in enclosure tipically just do nothing else than running.
I absolutely love watching videos of animals hunting in their natural environment.
Its really interesting when someone manages to spot say a praying mantis finding a cricket, in a similar way that feeding videos can be enjoyable.
But yeah the bug fights are kinda weird watched 1 a t vs a centipede and the way the comments were talking about jt and watching tarantula try its best tk escape only attacking when needed was sad.
Especially seeing as the channel mentioned the centipede coukdnt wat after and died 2 days after the fight, like if the centiepede cannot eat put it out of its misery, dont let it starve to death
I see people live feeding when its really not necessary, like i know it is important sometimes as ive owned a brisbane river turtle and he wouldnt eat much unless it was moving but i fed him worms and cray fish and the like, but never tried to feed him anything he wouldnt eat in his natural habitat or that could hurt him.
And I fed him lots of veggies too, but he would only take em from his land perch and drag .into the water, he wouldn't go for em if I put them in the water 😂 he was a weird little guy
Excellent video, absolutely first class!
I'm not a huge fan of things with stings (or venomous bites, but I couldn't get that to rhyme), but I derive absolutely no pleasure seeing them hurt or injured, just to give morons a few minutes entertainment.
Of course, the muppets producing these fight videos must bare most of the responsibility for the cruelty being inflicted on the animals, but if it wasn't for the gobshites who watch and encourage them, they wouldn't make them in the first place!
As I've already said, I'm not a huge fan of the creatures in your collection, especially spiders - there are some serious, unresolved issues between spiders and me - but I enjoy watching your videos and absorbing a little of the knowledge and experience you possess regarding them, keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you an appreciate these animals, even if they aren't your favorite thing.
Yessss glad someone called this out. It’s awful.
Yeah I'm surprised no other UA-cam channels about inverts covered the topic.
I agree with you
At least MonsterWars puts them in natural environments right?
I don't really mind those, but I dislike their narration style.
Not really. Many are likely staged. BBC's Blue Planet was 40% aquariums.
Everything on television is fake, just remember. It's called 'programming' for a reason.
People who make those videos should get placed in an octogon with UFC fighters. For scientific purposes.
Haha, precisely
😂😂😂
When you get right down to it, there is no better excuse for set up bug fights, than there is for cock and dog fights! They've been outlawed, and bug fights can be outlawed as well! It's going to take a lot of time and education, but it can be done. If we're going to spend time typing, we may as well make it count! Anyone have any suggestions about who we bury under an enormous pile of comments and email??
Exactly!!! I won’t watch anybody’s channel or support any videos where people are fighting animals, bugs, spiders etc. Its cruel….
Great video. People always get their Karma!
This is amazing lol
Cheers!
Im shocked you didn't say anything about the crayfish and the scorpion
Every few months i clear my History on utube.... Helps alot on the dumb video recommends
This I actually agree on and soon I am going to make a video about bad content on yt
I cannot emphazise enough to make use of the report function if there is any content, that goes to far 4 you.
Even if the video will not get banned, if enough people claim content to be somewhat disturbing to them or something, then at least the video gets demonetized and the CC cannot make any more cash out of his gruesome content.
Ironically, no one of them ever wanted to show what happens, if you "accidentally" stick your hand into the burrow of a hungry tarantula, that would at least be a realistic thing to happen and also somewhat educational for viewers and creator alike.
Commenting for the algorithm
Realized I hadn't finished this vid lol
RANT ON!!!!!
I think they’re cruel, barbaric and unnecessary.
What about rhino beetle battles?
That's different in my opinion as males will naturally fight each other, and they aren't fatal.
@@BugsandBiology amen to that!

Well I can't speak for everyone, but I see no reason for them to exist whatsoever.
Wow! Thats a very eloquently stated case against staged bug fights. I agree with all your points.. that being said, they're still interesting to watch...
I'll have to admit myself that there is an entertainment factor to them. Ah well, at least I can acknowledge that bit of hypocrisy.
@@BugsandBiology hypocrisy aside, it's still more interesting to see it occurring the wild where the outcomes are more realistic
Yeah I’ve never been a fan of these channels.

Not to mention the whole bug war thing is cruel. Imagine the uproar if it was dogs or chickens. Animals are animals no matter what they are 😊
Agreed. And even bug fights that involve reptiles and mammals are still allowed on UA-cam; there's ones where inverts, mice, snakes and lizards are all thrown into a box together and YT still allows it.

Yeah, literal animal abuse gets rewarded with millions of views, while some random UA-camr can get demonetized for saying a bad word.
Oh come on, how can you doubt the accuracy and dedication to science when channels have such prestigious video titles as....”BL00DY M3SS❗VENOMOUS TARANTULA GIVE FACE B1TE❗️SCIENCE EDUCATION LIVE FEEDING”
You can tell it’s highly respectable and intellectual by the lack of appropriate grammar, bizarrely all capital letters, and the use of 1337 speak number lettering and needless use of large red exclamation points. Certainly no body could doubt the legitimacy of that......well except for any person with even the most basic comprehension of logic.
I saw only one channel, i report it and never see it again. Just report then and ignore that content and never see it again.
You don't want to endorse this type of content, yet you clearly demonstrate what these channel names are 🤷🏻♂️.. not sure if you know how the algorithm works, but even one search of these channels.. even out of curiosity.. starts recommending these channels, where before it would have taken a hell of a rabbit hole to find.. showing the footage I feel would have maybe been a less endorsing method, at least that way you feed the curiosity without exposing the channels posting them.. 🤔
They get recommended to anyone who watches invert content. Sure, in hindsight it would’ve been better to blur the channels’ names, but I doubt it’s that big of a deal.
These bug fights are no less sick and barbaric than dog fights. I detest them
Its me gypsey and it is nasty using animals to fight for views and subs
I don’t like them invert v fights 🤦♀️ I like watching reptile & invert feeding times .
Yeah feeding is different. Not least cause it's fully necessary.
@@BugsandBiology It is indeed 👍🏻
The people that seek out bug fight videos have a name: a sadist, and they just want to see violence, for a thrill. I report every one of those videos that comes up, because they're neither entertaining or educational, and promote the same kind of entertainment as dog/chicken fighting.
I genuinely despise the animal fight part of youtube. Nothing wrong with filming nature doing it's thing but putting animals into a container to kill each other for entertainment is fucked
What's the problem with Bugs fight? Trying being boring and utterly stupid.
I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say here.
@@BugsandBiology I've tried watch Bug fight videos and I always go away bored after 2 seconds of watching it. It's utterly stupid to pit 2 predatory insects against each other. They're utterly ridiculous and a waste of time.
Oh right, yeah I definitely agree with you there. Boring and stupid for sure.
I report the bug gladiator vids i see, if it was a dog fight everyone would be horrified. Well, inverts might not have much brainwise, i dunno, they maybe all instinct, and also they aren't furry and cute, but they're lives, lives that should be as full as nature allows, not what some spotty Herbert with a terrarium allows!
