    Tank #1: Aluminum Box, between the turbos
    Tank #2: Stainless tubes mounted under turbos
    Tank #3: Aluminum Tube Mounted Under Turbos
    They will all test my fab skills...but what should I make?

    Do a mix of the two I would run a larger cylinder in the middle giving a cleaner look around the turbos and might give you a little more room than a box

      @@rennch. 👍 the take will have to be large enough to maintain some oil so the pump doesn’t run dry and burn out prematurely, possibly run it to the timing chain cover I’ll look at the one I’m building and see if there is a good spot

    Hybrid option - cylindrical tank in the middle. Always love your videos. Favorite channel.

    I vote for a single tube based tank in the middle, you can run a drain tube down and through a 90 degree turn in to each end with a pump take at the bottom and vent at the top if you need. You can then put your pump somewhere out of the way at the same level so you have gravity feed. You can run your pump through the ECU to empty the tank on startup.

    I agree with other comments, combine the two and do a cylindrical tank in the middle. Cylindrical would blend in better with the exhaust.

    The first option like Porsche 935, is my opinion. Good project👍🏻👍🏻

    Drain lines to a central stainless cylinder aligned fore and aft, the cylinder shaped scavenge pump next to it aligned fore and aft, this mimics the dual exhaust outlets behind it. Bam! Coolness!

    Option 3. The turbos do not like any resistance in the flow of oil in the returnline.

    I think the box in the middle is the best option and looks like it would have the best clearance specs

    Option 2 seems more effective as means to having two tanks. You could use a cylinder even there
    But can you fit the scavenging pump in behind.
    With any of the options however they are all hidden behind the bumper and not seen, so make life easy. And why make the tank out of aluminium?
    Use a light steel. It will be easier to build and heat soak more of the hot oil much more efficiently.

    Option 2 or 3, leaning towards 2👍🏻

  • @michaelanderson3771

    Michael
    Q- are the turbo oil lines under pressure from the oil pump of the engine.
    If so, IMO, a tank is the wrong way to do the return to the engines sump. Definitely no vent as you will spray hot oil on the exhaust casing fire hazard
    Positive oil pressure will ensure oil flows to sump as it leaves the turbos body..

    option 2. I would recommend Turbowerx scavenge pumps, I use one in my modified 930 and its working great even in hottest middle east summers.

    Mate, I would go with the single tank and pump.
    But I think it needs to be stainless steel.
    It’s vulnerable down there and it would be a bullet proof and simple solution without giving up too much clearance.
    Blundstones for the win.

      With flex lines not solid, vibration kills SSteel and aluminium.

    I’d say the box in the center is most pleasing to the eye but I’m hesitant to vote because I gotta be honest I no next to nothing about turbos as everything I’ve ever had has been natural aspirated so I don’t want to steer you wrong.

    I would say the aluminum tank because you could also add some fins to make it a cooler. Would that help at all? I don't know, I'm not an engineer nor am I building a car right now. I think it would also look better than having two tubes hanging under your turbos.

  • @OddJobFix
    @OddJobFix 4 місяці тому

    AL dissipates heat better if that helps. Also I think a solid tube bolted to the turbo will be a failure point due to overall engine vibrations. The longer that drop tube is the more likely it is to be a future problem. I have no idea about turbos but what crosses my mind is to attach SS braided lines to the turbo drains and run them elsewhere to the point of any pump. I heard you say lines running horizontal and forward were not ideal, so if I'm suggesting just that, well, fagetaboutit. The question I have is what are those black lines? Is that something that is deemed to not work or something else altogether?

  • @frankm6601
    @frankm6601 4 місяці тому

    If the turbo drains are above the oil level in the pan, then just plumb direct to the pan. A separate scavenge system is only needed if the turbo drains are below pan oil level.

    • @dw4861
      @dw4861 4 місяці тому

      I like frankm6601 idea or the aluminum box. keep it simple.

    • @OddJobFix
      @OddJobFix 4 місяці тому

      I don't think the drains are sufficiently above the oil level in the pan. Also consider the oil dynamics under acceleration, etc. It seems to me that Michael has determined that the turbo oil must be collected and then gathered at a pump to be force fed back into the engine possibly thru a check valve.

    • @frankm6601
      @frankm6601 4 місяці тому

      Remember that the turbos are pressure fed oil and drain to a relatively atmospheric pressure oil pan. Since the drains are essentially pressurized out, a little oil sloshing in the pan won’t matter.

  • @VZ935
    @VZ935 4 місяці тому

    I am not sure of the Subaru engine configuration but on my 993 GT2 I gravity fed, with no catch tanks, directly to the lower valve covers. When I went to bigger turbos I used a cam driven, modified VW oil pump. one of my 935s has an ANDIAL engine that has no catch cans and directly feeds to the plate at the bottom of the engine letting the oil pump do the work. Maybe a Tilton electric pump can get the job done.

    stick with it, I love the build and understand the restrictions. I am building a restomod myself a 58 356 Sunroof coupe and prices are "Outrageous" for such a simple car. Budget budget budget because it is rare for anyone to have unlimited funds.

    I think you may be able to do a return into the timing cover, but I didn't have the visual angle to determine if that would be viable. What you have to have is the oil not returning higher than the oil level in the engine. You cold pump it there if you want or need the pump; you pick. You'll need a light to monitor to be sure the pump is in service also. Hope this helps you out.

    The box looks ugly, however, option one looms to put too much load on the piepe from the turbo resulting in failure, so some flex from the turbos to a tank would be best, option two, how about a tubular tank made from the same tubing as the exhaust.

    Central tank seems to have the same issues as gravity draining into the engine oil pan. Separate tanks seems more reasonable, but I wonder how would you mount the passenger side due to the turbo clocking. Will the tank end up in bumper or completely below the engine?
