There is a a fictional book called Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Its about this individual who has mental disabilities and yearns to be intelligent so scientist, having experimented on a rat in the lab an intelligence-enhancing drug, give this to the protagonist. He grows smart but at what cost? He loses his sensibilities and social bond, he is lonely and confused. This in so many ways is a parable for modernity and also more personally many of us Muslims who came to the West in search for an education. We don’t pause think reflect on what is the cost? Yes we may go to ivy leagues and have high paying jobs that we wouldn’t have dreamt of in our motherland, but conversely we lose our closeness of family, we are around shirk, we are depressed as materialism is the apex of success, we have lost our mother tongue and our culture, we have contempt for our motherland and believe we, the Occident, are better due to being more progressive than our Oriental kins.

السلام عليكم أخي توم،
You mentioned in one of your talks with brother Paul Williams that you're a member of a conservation club. Is there any islamic resources about wildlife and conservation that you'd recommend? I recently came across a research paper about a conservation program that existed since the time of the Prophet pbuh in the Arabian Peninsula called "Hima-حِمَى". It used to regulate grazing rights and wildlife managment in the entire region for hundreds of years after the prophet. This paper was an excellent conversation starter about islam's effect on society with my non-muslim in-laws who are deeply involved in conservation clubs.
Would be great if you reccommend any similar resources.

I like how he brings up drag queens reading regular books to kids and teaching kids that you can have two dads because Mohammad peace be upon him has a 6 year old wife. Child molestation was rampent. Separately homosexuality in the islamic world is not hard to find from the time hes referencing. Everything else is spot on I love Tom. I just disagree with him when it comes to this one thing. Especially when capitalism and western neoliberalism is such an unbelievably larger issue. On the scale of judgement being gay and being a genocidal hoarder of wealth and economic corruption are going to weigh a lot differently.
