Are you picking the way that Richard Thompson does? (Plectrum and 3rd-5th fingers)
Hi Jane thank you. I'm glad you like this. I use plectrum and third finger nail on a steel string. I also play classical guitar on a nylon string so I keep my right hand nails long. That’s makes total sense. Move a full step up to get you open “D” then use the capo to move the rest of the strings full step up. I have never thought of that. Thank you.

Hi Stuart, my wife and I finally got around to watching The Detectorists. We live in Ohio now. I'm Irish but we lived in Cornwall and Devon for a number of years before moving, and I find the show takes me right back to the peaceful English countryside. And this song and acoustic music in it is all perfect. I really enjoy your version of this! Really nice
Hi Andrew. I imagine Ohio is a beautiful place to live 🙂. We love Cornwall and Devon for holidays. We live in Nottinghamshire in the Midlands. I imagine Ohio is a little less congested than in the UK. We've been to Canada a couple of times and couldn't believe the open spaces and distances. Hi Dirk. Yes, great song from a great TV series. I wonder if you get the TV show in Germany? By the way, I have relatives in Germany and have visited your lovely country many times. Thanks from England for your comments 🙂🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 hi Stewart, i came across the song accidentally lately and learned it was the theme of a series. Since i do some hobby archeology with a drone and detector i got curious and found out we had the series only once and that was years ago. Luckily i was able to buy the DVDs from the UK. Great story, Music and acting. I have a friend in Wales and visited her, also Cornwall. Very beautiful country. Would love to see more of the UK sometime. Thank you for your videos!
Nicely played. However, the ‘upside down capo trick’ doesn’t make any sense. Capo’ing all but the bottom E string is exactly equivalent to tuning down the E string and then applying the capo across all strings (if desired).
Yes indeed, but then you have to retune the damn thing back to standard tuning instead of just unclipping the capo. And you don't have to learn a new shape for G chord. That's the whole point. And it's just a bit of fun 🙂. I'm glad you liked it though, and at least it got us having a natter about our lovely instrument. Thanks for listening and commenting 🙂 🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 The usual shape of G chord (or any chord that includes the lowest string) won’t work in either scenario (either tuning down or using a partial capo). So there isn’t an advantage there. But you’re right that the capo saves you having to retune the string.
Thanks Charles. Yes a technique that crept up on me when I was a teenager. I do use finger style sometimes but it's not as natural to me. I guess it's because I grew up playing rock. 🙂 Thanks for listening and commenting 🙂🎸

Really lovely Stuart. Been meaning to learn this. Great tip on the capo. It's a pain doing a drop D normally and then tuning back again. Particularly if it's on a live gig. Thanks for the tip!

Plectrum and 3rd finger nail. I play a bit of classical guitar, so keep my nails long 🙂.
My steel string technique just crept up on me in my teens when I was playing in a band.
Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
That was great, nice u!And thanks for the capo tip! I've been playing year's and honestly never thought of doing that!😆😂👍❤
Thank you very much. There is a similar trick to get to dadgad.
If you tune your guitar to a proper drop D, then put the 2nd capo over the bottom 4 strings, 2 frets up, you get a dadgad effect.
All good fun 🙂🎸🎸
That’s makes total sense. Move a full step up to get you open “D” then use the capo to move the rest of the strings full step up. I have never thought of that. Thank you.
My pleasure. Good fun isn't it. Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
So clever. Great video.
Lovely! Can’t wait to try myself when I can get the acoustic out and make some noise!
Thank you. You might like this tutorial. Hope it helps 🙂🎸

Haha cool, I didn't know this trick! I also didn't know you have a Johnny Flynn cover, great job ;) This is a lovely song 👍
Thanks Dominik. Lovely song yes from a brilliant and funny TV series of course 🙂🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 I haven't seen it, but I feel it's going to be on our "to watch" list now :) I noticed that many people who cover this song also mention that it's a great TV show.
@Stuart Clifford - u seen there is a Xmas 2022 special of the Detectorists on BBC2
Yeah. Got to watch that one 😃. Thanks for the tip though 🙂
Its called just "Detectorists". No "The" required.
You're not the first to point that out. As I've said before it's the sort of detail a detectorist would notice. 😆
Crackin that Stuart
You have a wonderful talent. Did you teach yourself to play or take lessons?
Self taught. Started 65 years ago 🙂. Basically in the early days watched a friend and Hank Marvin 🙂🎸
I love you Stuart this is great
in a world full of fake, i love a surprise like this, so pure and honest.
Oh thanks Skinny. Comments like yours are very rewarding.
I'm glad you liked it and thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
Nice cover matey
I love the detectorists I thought the last Christmas special was brilliant. And yes the Johnny Flynn song is perfect.
Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 😊 🎸
Genius move 🤌🏼
Well played and sung sir!
…. Loved it, way to go …. 👌
Thanks Tim. Great song from a great TV series. I wonder if they are making a Christmas special this year?
Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 😊 🎸
beautiful stu x
Have you listened to Johnny Flynn's alarum album? I've been working on the wrote and the writ for ages.
No I haven't, but I will now. Thanks for the tip. Great guy, and music isn't even his main occupation - he's an actor too - Shakesperian no less!
Thanks for listening and commenting it means a lot 😊 🎸
Yes , I also found out the capo trick a couple of years ago. It does sound very nice and a very good video Stuart. Thank you.
Thanks again Richard. Glad you like my stuff 🙂🎸
A great tip! I wouldn't have thought to do that. I would have re-tuned the whole thing... Doh!
😆 thanks Sarah. Thanks for listening and commenting it means a lot 😊 🎸

I love the original and this'll do for me too! Lovely version, congratulations!👏👏👏👏👏

Really enjoyed this Stuart. Good playing and pleasant voice. Thank you so much.
Thank you Steven. I love this song. Glad you liked it 🙂🎸
I absolutely love this song , you are doing some nice picking Sir and i like the trick with the 2nd Capo. Thank you alot from Germany.
How can you not subscribe to this personification of inspiration? Brilliant, talented, helpful, old-as-fuck, and English not American - what a treat!
Fabulous mate. Keep going. x
Cheers, I'll try 🙂.
Thanks for listening and commenting it means a lot 😊 🎸
You proved that a pick can create a version as beautiful as finger style. Great job!
Thanks Charles. Yes a technique that crept up on me when I was a teenager. I do use finger style sometimes but it's not as natural to me. I guess it's because I grew up playing rock. 🙂 Thanks for listening and commenting 🙂🎸
Hi Stuart, this is beautiful. I lovevJohnny Flynns music hes very talented and unusual.
Ive wanted to sing this at our folk club but didnt feel confident enough but you have inspired me to give it a go. I dont play guitar but now i feel i could do it.
Thank you. I'll get on and practice it, wish me luck! 😊
Thank you Fiona. Well done - go for it! This song is a good place to start. Don't worry about the twiddly bits and capo stuff to start off with. That can come later 🙂.
Good luck, I hope the folk club goes well.
Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 😊 🎸
By the way, I just remembered, I've done a tutorial for this.
Here it is

Wow,I've learned some great new tricks from that lesson,Stuart - many thanks!
Best theme song ever. Fantastic show as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills m8.
Thanks Mick, I agree. And it was all my pleasure to share 🙂

Hello, Stuart.
After nearly 40 years at sea I have decided to hang up my old sea boots and invest in an organic farm .
I would love to use your version of this song as our theme tune for our new UA-cam Channel. I think the land & sea themes are particularly pertinent.
I shall, of course, give you full credit .
All the best
Graeme
Wow thanks Graeme that would be great.
Can you let me know when it's up and running I would like to see your venture.
Good luck and thank you 😊 🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 Will do, Stuart. Thank you very much.
Really lovely Stuart. Been meaning to learn this. Great tip on the capo. It's a pain doing a drop D normally and then tuning back again. Particularly if it's on a live gig. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks K T. I just uploaded a tutorial (Requested by one of my subscribers) hope it helps 😊 🎸.
Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
I'll check it out, thanks
Well done Sir. Any recommendations on similar old folk songs? I think Flynn tapped into an old library.
Thank you Lex.
Oh where do I begin?
Christy Moore, Bert Jansch, Martyn Carthy, The Watersons, Show of Hands, Oyster Band, Fairport Convention, John Renbourne, to name a few.
Good luck, and thanks for listening and commenting 🙂 🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 thanks, having a listen :)

I've just uploaded a tutorial which I think is similar to your tab here.
I don't regard myself as a teacher, but I was asked so I did it. Some folks have given thumbs up or nice comments so I'm chuffed about that so far 🙂.
Very grateful for your comments thanks 😊 🎸
Sweet! Thanks for this. From New Zealand.
Thanks Kenneth. I am amazed that my little YT channel is reaching all around the world. Your comment from NZ is very humbling, thank you.
I wonder if you see the TV series that this song is from. They showed a brilliant Christmas special on boxing day 🙂.
Thanks again for listening and commenting it means a lot 😊 🎸
Yes, we have seen the series here. Loved it.@@stuartclifford8795
Thats a great explanation of how to get drop D sound variation in different keys without using different chord shapes!
Late to the party but just wanted to say what a fantastic cover, such a great tune and you seem like the sort of bloke I’d like to go for a pint with. All the best
Well thanks Doctor 😊. Yes great song from a great series 🙂.
Thanks for your kind words, and I look forward to that pint 😀 🍺 🎸
Well thanks Doctor 😊. Yes great song from a great series 🙂.
Thanks for your kind words, and I look forward to that pint 😀 🍺 🎸
Why have i never done this before !😂
Haha, I know, so simple isn't it.
I saw the guy from the Mumfords also getting a dadgad effect by tuning to a proper drop D, and then putting a capo over the bottom 4 strings 2nd fret.
You can then capo the whole thing up with a 2nd capo.
Try it, it works!
Have fun 🙂.
Thanks for listening and commenting 🙂🎸
Bramble and Briar? It's Briar and Bramble!
Haha hi Tin🙂. Yes I've had that pointed out before. Slip of the tongue there. It's what comes of singing by memory rather than reading 🙂.
I also say it's the sort of detail only a detectorist would notice....😀.
I hope it didn't spoil this brilliant song.
I'll try better next time 🙂.
But thank you for listening and commenting 🙂🎸
