Despite either you love or hate this movie, everyone must agree that the set design, special effects, art and set decoration and production design is absolutely incredible and Oscar worthy.
I mean That's really the only good thing this remake did: its special effects and CGI. But it missed the mark so badly with the story and characters, both of which are what made the original 1972 film such a classic and one of the best disaster films of all time
I think it was very well done! Especially when you consider that the actors did most of their own stunts. You can actually feel the fear. And the CGI with the ship and the water, it looks more like they used a practical model of the ship rather than CGI. Totally mind blowing for 2006! Though I do wish the character development was more thorough in the beginning just so we can get a better idea of their characters' backgrounds. Because it all just felt rushed, Incomplete, essentially. I mean, we get hints, but beyond that, they're all pretty much a complete mystery. Even the countdown to the New Year felt rushed. At least in the original, there was a build-up before the big splash. I know I say original,
Even though it's supposed to be a complete retelling of the story. But it is based off of the original movie or novel. Though I do like the idea of a rogue wave. In the original it was a way caused by an earthquake somewhere off the coast of Crete. I mean, even on the bridge seemed rushed. Like, they didn't even bother looking at the radar. Other than that, job well done Wolfgang Peterson!
So it's not as good as the original, but that doesn't mean it's bad. The visual effects are great and the cast is good. I still get some goosebumps from this film. Really an underrated remake IMO.
I mean yeah, its special effects and CGI are really good , but that's really the only good thing this remake did. CGI and SFX spectacle are not enough to make it at least a good film and it missed the mark so badly with the story and characters, both of which are what made the original 1972 film such a classic and one of the best disaster films of all time. If they did have more run time to give more character in the main survivor group in the story, then it would at least be a decent film.
@@kendrick5501 Yeah, that's my main issue with this film. It was just too short. They basically thrown you in when the ship capsizes and there's absolutely no chance for you to get to know the characters wahtsoever.
Agreed. I really would love to see the deleted scenes of it that were never officially released. I'm sure if those were included, it would've helped with character development or pacing around the beginning.
I watched this for the first time last night and I was so amazed with everyone’s performances and how well this movie was made. When I figured out Kurt Russel like actually drowned to make his death scene I was so shocked
I actually read about that when Kurt Russell was giving an interview. Apparently, it was HIS idea to do that! He said "I want to drown and I want to drown right." He told the scuba diver to wait until he was on the verge of drowning. He would say that this scuba diver in particular had "a very sharp eye." He said he started to feel weird , which suggests that he was on the verge of drowning. Henceforth, the scuba diver went into action! When Kurt Russell comes too, he finds himself on the floor, out of the tank safe and sound with Wolfgang and the others looking at him and they're all like "oh my God!" Of which Kurt Russell simply replys "I guess we got it then!" The most terrifying thing of the whole scene, in my opinion is, ironically, not the fact that he almost drowned (which IS terrifying), but what his wife was going to do to him when she found out! I can only imagine! Not that I'd blame her. I mean that's just insane, pure and simple! Kudos for realism, though, Mr. Russel
This movie is very nostalgic for me. Aside from that I think we can all agree the CGI, even for today, holds up. While it does kind of fall apart on some of the more difficult scenes (A few of the wide shots, some of the major destruction scenes, and a few of the explosion scenes) I was very impressed with how well this movie holds up. That being said I do think some of the characters could have been more fleshed out. Either way great movie, great CGI, and a pretty decent soundtrack. I give it an 8/10 (Also the drowning scene was so well done it's hard to watch without flinching/squinting)
I loved the movie! I'm only 9 years old and i have watched both of the Poseidon films (loved them) titanic original and titanic Hollywood and Poseidon adventures and Poseidon you guys, they are all my fav films. but you guys are my number 1
this movie made me cry becuase seeing all those people die of fire, drowning, and being crushed sounds and is horrifying. I cried at the part where the had to let go of valentine
Most people don’t like this film because it has CGI. I do not get why people get so upset about it. I like the original from 1972, but 2006’s Poseidon I will say is not as good as the original, but I appreciate the creativity, work, and accomplishment was done for this movie. The people who complain about the CGI don’t give a fuck about credit on Wolfgang Petersen. Why don’t YOU try making this film? He directed this like it is supposed to like from 1972.
Okay...basically I would have wanted. to be an extra in this movie just so I could die dramatically. 😄 Either the ballroom drowning scene or the staircase scene where they are sliding with all the tables and chairs.
There is a lot of people that say that this movie is horrible, but i never see them saying that the 2005 remake is bad, the 2005 one is 100 times worse than this: it has horrible CGI, horrible characters, it was away too long and thay even changed the way the ship capsized from a wave to a bomb! It's completely unrealistic and this one claps the 2005 one in quality.
This is a really great behind the scenes. - There is one thing I do not understand though, from a STORY perspective: When the windows burst in during the flooding of the ballroom, why would some person in there wait, float up and when the pressure had become equal, swim out through the holes and to the surface - rather like being in a flooded car..
mmm seeing the violence with which the water entered, the whirlpool on the first level, while water was already entering from the windows above, plus the debris, without light or time... something difficult ah :" v
the pressure would be way too much to swim that far. even if someone could hold their breath for long enough (doubtful), the sudden change in pressure from swimming 100 ft/30 meters underwater all the way to the surface immediately would cause nitrogen bubbles to form in the body. these bubbles can be damaging and even fatal, so yeah swimming like that would unfortunately be out of the question.
Good movie. I liked the original Poseidon Adventure movie ( 1972), but I thought this movie was a good remake. It is a good story and it was time for a remake. It was time to move on with it in a new direction.
If the characters in the 2006 remake were actual characters and not just there to exist for God knows why, there would've been. It'll just be a CGI fest if this is the only good strength of the film
The story arcs were non existent..The only good thing was the sinking scene....And killing the girls brother in the elevator shaft scene was awful....He was one of the only likeable characters...
I agree, I never understood that elevator scene, like if Richard Dreyfus character was about to commit suicide, why then he tried to sacrifice someone else in order to save himself?
Valentin (the person u mentioned that died in the elevator shaft), Elena, and maybe Robert (Kurt Russell), and Lucky Larry were the only good characters in the film Just so happens they all ended up being dead, thus only the boring and dull ones survive
Even though I still like this film, I still never forgot the fact of how a little better the original one was. At least this one beats the TV movie the year before. In fact, the crazy thing is when they said they originally planned on shooting this in Mexico, I was thinking Baja studios, where James Cameron did Titanic.
