UPDATED 70 SERIES | THIS IS NOT FOR ME AND YOU

  • Well the internet has exploded!
The face lifted 70 series has dropped, they have really gone all out this time and made what was a cult vehicle way less appealing than before. But strangely enough I think Toyota have done the smartest thing they could by using the simpler more economical 2.8L underpowered diesel from the hilux. Because remember this car was never meant for me and you.

I reckon they've kept the V8 for the time being to stop everyone having a meltdown that they axed it. My prediction is the tactic is to have the V8 available for another year or two, that will give people time to get used to the idea of the 2.8 and for the positive reviews etc to build up, then they'll quietly remove the V8 from being available. Like you said, Toyota ain't stupid 👍

It is in these spaces that opportunity for new car companies to step in or new companies to emerge with products our community needs in order to explore Australia with our family and friends. The V8 will never die. Time to innovate Australia in the car industry once again.

I agree with you 100% on the phasing out of the V8 and comments about working on the VDJ and 8 injectors to replace down the track etc. Begs the question though if considering the 76 wagon why you would just not go for an upcoming 250 GX Prado (also on same platform as the 300 series) other than the retro looks and standard GVM on 70 series which is now huge 3500 kg so payload about 1.3T in the 76.

Given it's expected Toyota will prioritise fleet orders, and we all agree the vast majority will be the 2.8/auto, there's a chance that the V8 may be axed before any actually make it onto the roads given it apparently won't meet the upcoming emissions rules.

Not the first time a Land Cruiser has used a Hilux engine, the LJ and RJ of the 1980's used the 2 LT or 22RE respectively, they were known as a Bundera. They were considered medium duty and were replaced by the Prado, which also shared a Hilux engine.

@@JC-zg4xe you are absolutely right and should Toyota revert to that vehicle now (the original Prado, the one sold in other countries, some imported here) as with it's coil rear end, the new 2.8 with auto box would sell far better also. .
But alas, that makes it a passenger vehicle, so it's no longer a "commercial vehicle" & what's more ridiculous the 76 is called a "VAN" to retain its commercial provision/availability.
Disbelieve me, get a 76 handbook, it's discussed in the first pages of the manual and Vin. No. section from memory.
I owned one briefly, man oh man, the 76 with leaf springs, bloody ridiculous concept, piece of shit it was. I'm not wrong, why do owners pay thousands to convert to coil rear ends.

Great episode. Fancy a 4cy donk in a flashy cruiser! So would that be why if you definitely want a V8 it is a 4yr wait time now?
I can't help but think that in 4yrs the rules for engines and immissions will be so different, they won't be able to run the V8 anyway.
So if you don't own one right now, the likelihood of getting one off the assembly line with a V8 is extremely limited.
And of course one of the few things you really can't do anymore is upgrade the engine.
So we might be stuck with what we have if we definitely want a Landcruiser. Or buy secondhand. So up go the prices yet again.
I am still not selling mine! Just recently, I have been using it to move house, towing a 10x6trailer cage trailer everyday for the last two weeks.
Moving a whole farm is no mean feat, but the cruiser takes it in its stride. It is hard to actually feel the trailer on behind except on the badly bumpy bits of road.
It just gets on with the job without complaint. Ok maybe it is a bit bare inside with no fang dangle bits n pieces. But it drives mighty fine!

The Advice: Toyota was very smart with their marketing of the new face-lifted 70 series. They presented a new option of the 2.8L TD alongside the current V8 TD, simple and subtle.
The Reality (IMO): When Toyota opens the books for orders again, new buyers will only get the 2.8L TD option, no more V8's will be made to order. This means anyone who has an allocation in the facelift with a V8 have hit the jackpot as they will be the rarest and most wanted Land Cruisers to ever grace our great nation. It'll be like the 200 series runout - expect to pay around 150k for a GXL top spec if anyone ever willing to part with their future unicorn.
Prediction: Get your hands on any 2023 model 76 wagon or 79 dual cab (or even a Troopy) LC face lifted or pre-face lifted (doesn't matter, as long as it's a V8TD) and hold on, as when this news becomes public, your LC will be worth it's weight in gold.

Lovely Ep and you made some great points, If I was buying a new LC 4wd Id buy the 2,8lt Auto either a 79 or wagon if they had 3 seats in the front like my old 80, its the only rezone we still do not own a dual cab Hilux or Nissan. and why we do not own a 79 V8 as there not made in Auto, unless you get one fitted for silly price,

I own a Hilux with this engine and a auto transmission.
The engine is underpowered with a load on the car and towing.
Almost to the point where it’s dangerous if you try to overtake if there isn’t long stretches of road.
It uses a lot of fuel as well because you have to ring its neck.
Might be a good money spinner for Toyota but for towing and heavy work I think it will be a disappointment for a lot of people.

Great video. I'm currently using a dualcab sr n80 as a work ute and a family vehicle on weekends. We do tow a 22ft van with it at times, and the hilux handles this, ok. But the gcm is touch and go . So if the 2.8l auto landcruiser dualcab keeps its 7t gcm, it may be a better dual-purpose vehicle to buy new. But the v8 would be ideal

Nice video mate, appreciate your honesty 👍 i have never owned a 79 series and probably never will, im totally facinated with the cult obsession with these cars though, in some ways i get it, they are an ever rarer solid axle with a badass sounding v8 and very good max axle loads, but on the other hand they are basically a new 40 year old car selling for drug money prices.
These would make a lot more sense to me if they had something like a 4 litre turbo diesel straight 6 that is easier to work on and was in the realm of 190kw and 600nm with the option of a auto snd comfy seats for about 60k new.
What people forget though is that these are a cult vehicle in aus and maybe a couple of other places but most of the world doesn't know that they exist so toyota isn't going to spend much time and money on these like they would other more globally popular vehicles.

    @MrHappy351 10 місяців тому +2

Landcruisers have had 4 cyls in the past, namely the 3B and 13B-T engines in the 40 and 70. The EcoBoost Falcon explanation needed a bit of context: back then in 2011/12 LPG was significantly cheaper and widely available, and the EcoLPI 4.0 had just launched. The EcoBoost was a 'no-cost option', i.e. it was not cheaper than the I6 and Ford barely told anyone about it to incentivise it. They had one ad that was online only, it was less powerful and didn't offer a lower purchase price. This is different, while the 4cyl 2.8 makes one less kilowatt of power, but it produces more torque (extra 70nM) and comes with an Auto box not available on the 8. Pricing is yet to be announced but I'm guessing it will be cheaper than the 8 at least in manual form. So I don't think it's the same as comparing it to the EcoBoost.

The 2.8L responds well to a lock up and mild tune in the Hiluxes. Plenty of these towing around the country. I think the 2.8L will be a big seller. I've ordered a single cab because I can put a canopy on it and tow a 2.4T van without exceeding GVM, GCM or rear axle load. The Hilux numbers are woeful in this regard. Granted, the 70 will have to be tuned so it doesn't come to a stop on the hills. ;)

Good review, on paper, the 2.8 has more torque than the v8, the v8 was just a bandaid solution, sticking the 2.8 in is just another stop gap solution, they should have reworked the 2.8 which could easily output 175 to 200kw, maybe with a second turbo

The 1GD has been going since 2015 and has proven itself reliable. Furthermore, it's based on the KD and KZ motors which go back to the 90s and are to this day proving to be very robust. Toyota have traditionally made the 70 series from the very best gear from the parts bin, stuff thats proven to work. I'd reckon if they're keen on putting the 1GD in it, they're confident it's going to be just as dependable as the V8. The new V6s in the 300 have already had some teething issues, which is why I think they haven't jumped straight into throwing them into the 70 series yet.

If they widen the rear axle on the 71 swb 76 wagon 78 troopy and 79 series tub.
Everyone is quick to forget about these vehicles and think only on the ute with a wide tray where a widened rear diff wouldn't poke past a tray.
The rest of the world run tubs on thier 79s, have you seen how much wheel poke there is with a widened rear diff under the oem tub.
They will also need to widen the rear body panels to keep legal poke. Have a look at the mq to gq patrol same body but gq has a "wide body flare" added to it to cover the wider diffs.

Cough cough.... unpopular opinion, but technically not the first time the 70 series got a hilux engine.
    Examples 2L ; 2L-T ; 2L-TE ; 3L & lastly the 1KZ-TE.
Though it was a first-generation prado (J70).... if you put one of the 4 door wagons next to a 76 series, the resemblance is uncanny.
Was also available in automatic back then.
The 70 series prado was later replaced/rebadged as a Land Cruiser.
Just my two cents on it.

Not wrong about the 2.8 having issues at the beginning, when the new Hilux landed in 2015 I bought one unfortunately, my SR5 had 2 leaking water pumps, clunky tail shaft, warped breaks, massive DPF issues, automatic transmission computer died leaving me stranded, all this with in 3 yrs 65,000 kilometres.
I’m currently in the class action over the DPF issue and am set to receive a $10k reimbursement from Toyota for my troubles.

Hi, inwork in the fleet industry as an auctioneer (37 years), have some big clients. Owned and own landcruisers. 5 v8s a 200, 75s 45s etc. have the worlds best fj45 done 100,000k. Just sold my dual cab v8 and bought a hilux auto. Why? Toyota have utterly let me down with the new 70. Track issue is one reason, interior is another. Its neither one thing eg super tough heavy weight ute without the frills, or 2. A vehicle with real development. They look dreadful under the bonnet. A ford tanger v6 is tidier. Auto? Good idea. 4cyl is ok too as its been done before. But it looks like a parts bin special. This could be the end of landcruiser as we know it just as the patrol died with the 4cyl and nil development. I shall enjoy the hilux, and enjoy the proper landcruiser- my fj45. A sad year for me. But as they say Nostalgia is a thing of the past

Companies don't always make the right choice. They fail to factor in human side of decision making.
In fact, you even provided an example with the Ford. People just didn't want a more economical falcon.
The same will be true with the 70 series. It absolutely makes no sense as a vehicle. You hit the nail on the head. The Hilux is better in every way and cheaper yet there is this mythical unknown thing about the V8 that people like.
Take that away and why wouldn't you buy a Hilux? I think fleet vehicles will do the same. They can get an equivalent Hilux for half the price almost and the running costs are significantly less so the 70 series makes no sense in any way, especially when it has the same engine as the Hilux
