The "American" Sized 2-Row | 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лип 2024
- VW's latest crossover looks like exactly what the doctor ordered for American shoppers. It's big, it's bold, and it's a lot less expensive than VW's last attempt at a larger 2-row SUV on our shores. The new Atlas Cross Sport is, quite literally, a 3-row Atlas with some of the rear cut off. The result is a wide and spacious cabin, the main selling point for upgrading from something like a RAV4 or CR-V. The only trouble? Oddly enough, that's still the price tag.

Cabin noise is an A! One of the most quiet rides I've ever had!
Excellent review as always. Sometimes I take for granted how detailed your reviews are. Really appreciate all the details and analysis even though it is usually over my head.
Well done again Alex, can't wait to hear the comments about this, like the complaints about Honda Pilot/Passport/Ridgeline
It is not FULL LED at the front, they still use those outdated incandescent turn signal bulbs
Alex - when you measure rear leg room, is there a way to talk about foot room? I think that sometimes having an inch or legroom still requires to jam feet under the front seats which is uncomfortable. Talking about that in your videos could be helpful. Thanks
Nice review! We love our 2019 VW Atlas SE w/tech 4motion. VW makes great SUV's!
The looks of the atlas cross sports, i mean, that car looks handsome, ticks all the boxes for me, minimalist practical interior, rugged sporty exterior. No one is perfect, so i will live with the fake exhausts. No wahala
A very underrated channel, should have much more subscribers.
Nicely done. Really appreciate the comparisons with competitors.
Me and my wife love our Crossport . It don't matter where we are everyone turns to look at our ocean metallic blue Crossport and the interior and size a lot better than GM SMALL SUV'S.
Thank you, thank you for your most excellent video about the VW Atlas Cross Sport. Your style of making comparisons along the way and detailed comparisons at the end is second to none. I see there are some other vehicles I must review. I'm a tall person and I like everything about the Cross Sport except the gas mileage, AWD 18/23. I understand with size fuel efficiency may decrease. I'm leaving an Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited.
The intro/outro music is mind blowing.
As much as a synthesizer from the '80s getting stuck on two or three notes .
They're showing off those fake exhaust trims like they're proud of em now
Such a beautifully designed car.. ikr
it's actually a great idea, exhaust tips get dirty and look like shit. these always look amazing.
Love your channel, Alex :D
I honestly think the “faster engine” chokes in mountain areas so I got the 2.0 liter myself. It has way more available torque on hills with a large grade to them.
Still don’t quite understand the whole CUV coupe thing. Maybe I just don’t value aesthetics as much as others, but I don’t think the differences here justify the loss of utility.
blakefeeldz1 just sharing my opinion, no need to shout. lol
@@ALMX5DP Shaving off head room is a trend that needs to end.
I understand your perspective too but there’s people like me who really diggs the look of those cars. GLE coup, X6, this. I wasn’t the biggest fan of this looks at first either but it grew in me pretty big.
Always thought coupe CUVs look SO dumb, leave the coupe aesthetic to actual coupes. CUVs have too tall bodies to properly pull the look off compellingly, they just end up looking goofy and sacrificing utility, but if that's what customers want, so be it.
Jieon Choi that’s what she said
I love the front grill on this Cross port
I test drove both engines Friday and ended up buying the vr6. The 4 was just too noisy and whiney. Great review. Wow, those prices definitely went up a bit in 2022!
Outback or better yet the Ascent. Thank you Alex. Roger
I love the look and the presence of the exterior, but it needs an engine to drop that 0-60 to around 6 seconds and better looking seats.
Finally someone who compares it with the Jeep. This is the most direct competitor.
The fake exhaust tips stay clean! Real tips get dirty and are hard to get clean once stained. Personally I like the idea, dual exhaust clean and hidden on this and the full size Atlas which I own.
We looked at the Santa Fe very seriously. However, the main deal breaker was the turbo lag. We drove 2 different cars with the 2.0 turbo. Both of them acted the same way. While smoothly pressing on the "go" pedal, you hit a point where the car instantly takes off, pushing the occupants back in the seat. I've never driven a turbo car that didn't accelerate smoothly like the SF. Also, note that the Hyundai dealer marked up his cars ridiculously. $250 for nitrogen filled tires? Give me a break.
Once you see the r line type front for pretty much any VW, it's hard to get excited for any of the looks in the more base models. That being said their R Line's look so much better then pretty much anything. I Just can't afford it.
I really like the concept of the VW Atlas Cross Sport. I wish Honda had its hybrid tech in the Pilot/Passport. I think Toyota's upcoming hybrid 2-row crossover will compete very well in the segment. You have to give up too much fuel economy for the room and comfort of these 3->2 row crossovers.
Factory tow equipment in the Atlas the only problem I have had with my Pilot is dealer installed tow equipment. No problems with the Atlas and 27.7 mpg Maryland to North Carolina v6
I would be curious about acceleration from 50 mph to 75 or 80, and for fuel economy at 70-80mph between the two. I know the turbo 4 is rated for half the towing capacity of the VR6. To me, that would be a hint that the VR6 should offer a longer lifespan.
Good job AoA! Very informative! But I wonder why, in your comparison at the end, you don't do the Kia Sorento? I think the Kia is better looking and a great value.
Nice boots!
We went with the Santa Fe SEL+ (now the SEL Convenience) AWD with the 2.4. Better expected reliability than any FCA or VW product, wider than the RAV4/CR-V compacts, relatively efficient (30 mpg from the mid Rockies to the East Coast and back over 4,500 miles), much less than a Murano or Edge, and we got a good deal of $26,300 vs MSRP of $32,800. As for power, two of us and a week worth of luggage, westbound over I70 out of Denver, rowing the gearbox, kept up with traffic at will. Standard full stop adaptive cruise is a godsend on long interstate slogs (especially in slow and go), as is standard lane keeping assist. Waiting for the Santa Fe to come with the new 2.5 NA or a hybrid of some sort so we can get an FWD Limited to replace our aging second vehicle.
Better reliability? Yeah right...

Did you read that in CR? They are bought and paid for by the auto industry and hardly independent or unbiased.
@@SIGINT007 I do not read CR. I read many other automotive journals, both consumer and industry. I base my opinion on the totality of what I read, not just one source.
Hey Alex i know u mentioned that you can’t have google imagery but at 11:00 u can still have a full maps screen just like in the Audi though
We love our 2019 Santa Fe’ SEL PLUS. All the Safety features and With the Lighter interior it is a great place to be inside. Super Quiet interior and Awesome Ride Quality even better than my 2019 Impala which I thought gave a great ride and was quiet. Both of these vehicles were very discounted and 0% for up to 84 months if you;re financing the Santa Fe’ $29K with discounts. and almost $10K off the Impala. Premier for $28.8K LOADED.
Looks like an advertisement😂
What is the advantage of this class of vehicle over a smaller 3-row like a Highlander or Santa Fe? Is there more cargo room than the latter with the seats folded?
Small detail, the rear seats only have 2 latch points for child seats as opposed to 3 in the 3-row Atlas.
What's the problem? Install the 21" R-Line wheels at the dealer and APR st1 tune, and you got a mid 5s 0-60, stylish and sexy SUV. Who needs the overpriced and slow Kia Telluride, with its faux wood and cheap build😂
Poor man's Q8?
The new front seat pictogram may be misleading. It doesn't convey lumbar adjustment, rather implies the seat back has a pivot like some luxury cars, even though most of the time it doesn't. Perhaps using two versions, one with a single piece seat back would be better.
With the Cross Sport VW joins a number of other brands in offering two vehicles in the so-called "midsize" crossover category. One being a smaller crossover typically between 188" and 192" in length and a group of larger vehicles that range from 195" to 203" in length. In most cases the smaller vehicles are six to twelve inches shorter than their larger siblings. The smaller vehicles are typically two row SUV's while the larger group offers three rows of seating. An exception is the KIA Sorento that provides three rows in a vehicle that's virtually the same size as its cousin the two row Hyundai Santa Fe.
Another exception is the is the VW Cross Sport that's less than 3" shorter than its "big" brother Atlas. VW has apparently decided that American consumers' overriding priority is BIG vehicles, at least compared to those VW offers to consumers elsewhere in the world. So while Honda chopped off 6" from the Honda Pilot in the Passport and the Chevy Blazer is a full 12" less in length than the bus-like Chevy Traverse, the 195.5" Cross Sport is actually a bit longer than the Toyota Highlander, a three row crossover. (At least according to Toyota's claim.) Simply stated the Cross Sport is a BIG two row crossover. It will be interesting to see whether it's a winner for VW.
As far as engine choices are concerned, it's not especially surprising that Alex finds the turbo4 in the Cross Sport to be a superior choice compared to the VW's VR6 in some ways. The EA888 2 liter four cylinder is an extraordinarily flexible powerplant, available in vehicles as diverse as the Tiguan and Golf R with vastly different performance characteristics. It's a tuner's dream. The VR6 engine, on the other hand, is not a strong contender in terms of performance. Its benefits lie in smoothness and linear power delivery. But its weight and performance profile aren't impressive by current standards.
Stephen...Great observations my man! I agree. This thing doesn't make a lot of sense. Maybe Audi can get away with charging more for the Q8 over the Q7, but I don't think VW can. I think only a hardcore VW fan will buy this. The value proposition is terrible. It's more money than the fully loaded, vastly superior Telluride.
@@johnholst I tend to agree, John. But I'm not a typical midsize crossover buyer. I value the "Goldilocks" size of the smaller category of midsize crossovers compared to the larger category that begins at about 195" in length. It's unclear to me whether for the Cross Sport VW went with their "bigger is better" philosophy about American consumers, found that they could save design and production costs on a two row midsize CUV by using almost all the same components and building it on the same assembly line as the larger Atlas in Tennessee, or both. Given that the Touareg is still sold in Europe I suspect that the Cross Sport, like the Atlas, will be an exclusively North American vehicle.
It's true that the MSRP of the Cross Sport won't save you much, if any money compared to the Atlas. But that's true of the Passport vs the Pilot, as well. Bottom line is that sharing so many components in two row and three row vehicles means they're going to be priced very much the same.
Finally, I detect a sort of sentiment about the "cool" factor in 2 row vs 3 row crossovers. Internet fan boys aren't a good sample of crossover buyers, of course, but I've been struck by the number of comments that suggest some consumers don't want three rows of seats in their SUV's. Not that they just don't prioritize a 3rd row but that they actively dislike the very idea of one. Too much of a "family" vs a swinging single vibe, I suspect. So perhaps there is a market for the Cross Sport vs, say, the Telluride.
I'd trust VW over Jeep in this case, I'm not taking this off-road and internal space is what I need. Plus, I already liked the Atlas.
Will it run on regular gas, like smaller Audi Q3?
To be honest, the ride is very comfortable compared to the rugged ones like jeep and honda. The reliability is also on the high spot per jd powers. This SUV is in fact a CUV as you can see by its design. The fake exhaust however is kinda new trend at this time that auto makers are doing right now - reasons aside from looks and cost. Mostly found in euro cars and even japanese like Lexus and Toyota.
Why no mention of the Chevy Blazer? A direct competitor in size, engine size and price . Also outselling the Passport.
Blazer quite a bit smaller interior
@@James-il3tq It seems so. I looked at the 3 row Atlas - nice vehicle, but I didn't want 3 rows or a sun roof. The sport is a good looking ride. I almost went for the Grand Cherokee, but the battery location and my past experience with a great Chevy dealer moved me to the Blazer. Great ride so far ( 5000 mi. ) All of the vehicles mentioned in the video are good. I just wondered why the Blazer wasn't mentioned.
@@James-il3tq uh..not true!
@@bfloyd5213 which part?
That’s a Q8
What's towing capacity between the 4cyl turbo and the v6 engine
I thought the regular 3 row Atlas is American sized
No rear center pass through or 40/20/40 rear seat
Why can't I get R-line trim with the 2.0 SEL?
Why do I have to have awd with my VR6 SEL Premium?
Why do I have to go all the way to Premium and awd for leather and ventilated seats. That should be standard here in the South...
The main difference is the 21" wheels, which you can get for 1 more grand at the dealer to install. The 2.0T is way more fun.
Great review! Does anyone know how much the 4cyl version can tow? I can't find the answer anywhere.
2,000 for the 4cyl and 5000 for the v6
As an old automotive engineer...symmetry is an important design element. But a black bumper with no visible exhaust would be great! Fake exhaust suck.
Nothing will beat the 5.0 v10 diesel of the toureg
James Mastroianni the Audi Q7 V12 diesel
Kevin Wright unfortunately we didn’t get them stateside.
Does Atlas have air suspension?
Does VW still offer 6-yr BB warranty?
I don’t see leg support in the second row seat~
It failed my tall person test. I'm 6' 7" and wear shorts all the time (Florida). My right knee rubs against the hard plastic, grainy side of the wide and tall center console. Disappointing because I targeted this as my next car. Drove an SEL AWD with the 4 cylinder turbo. Otherwise, loved the Cross Sport but could live with it.
Move the seat back.
I noticed you do not include the 2020 Subaru ascent in the list of competitors when you review a suv. I wonder why?
Because it's competition is a grand cherokee
I keep looking at other options but everything keeps pointing me back to the Grand Cherokee.
The fake exhaust vents are so strange that to me that look more like they are cutouts for some rear fog light option that doesn't exist!
I’ll be honest, it doesn’t feel half as luxurious as the Touareg.
and its starts at about half the price too!
@@Austin-nx1kl No it didnt
@@PS987654321PS oh sorry. About 30 grand base price, VS about 50 grand base price. Only about $20,000 apart.
Thanks for at least mentioned somethings about comfort for larger persons. Remember, full size persons watch your videos for insight towards fit and comfort.
Though it seems the VR6 is just begging to be replaced by a hybrid.
What is the towing capacity of the Atlas Cross Sport
2000lbs with 2.0t and
5000lbs with 3.6 vr6
Why not mention premium gas is required with the 2.0 turbo? The 3.6 V6 doesn’t need premium and it tows much more
Instead of talking about fake exhaust tips during one minute , I would have liked, to be told if the red line just above is a reflector or a full width light . Thks
humm, I worry how long does it take for me to replace a whole turbo charger..
Are you planning to climb Mount Everest? Those boots are just ridiculous.
We have one around us and always gawk when it rolls by and I'm out walking the dogs. Sure looks premium!
Ooooooooooooooooh myyyyyyyyyyyyy gaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwd.... VW please stop with these fake exhausts. Please. Great review as usual Alex!!!
What do you care? It's just a design thing. Better than a cheap pipe
big question is WHY?
2020 Chevrolet blazer 3.6 or 2.0
Hyundai Santa Fe is a no brainer here. This Atlas Cross Sport is actually longer than the all new Highlander and hardly an inch shorter than the Palisade and surprisingly costlier than Palisade too. In 2020 Santa Fe, you are actually almost the same or even better interior space, and the quality to my eyes look more stylish than Cross Sport, also surprisingly you can have extending thigh support in front seats in Santa Fe, and with all the options and features added to the maximum, a Santa Fe still would be under 41k USD, I don't know how can one recommend a Cross Sport in that scenario. Just get the top trim Highlander once you are fine with crossing the 193 inches length threshold, if not then just get a Santa Fe. End of discussion.
VW should have done better with interior. I like the look of both this and Kia telluride but interior is no comparison.
The interior is cheap in the Kia.
Well, I am surprised by your stance against the Passport Alex. What you are essentially saying here is that you would take the turbo 4 that is not either smooth or as powerful as the V6. Also, you are willing to give up the better equipped AWD system and the higher ground clearance of the passport that you might actually need in adverse weather situations and also the better handling on road passport just because it would be stiffer if taken off road which should be uncommon for most shoppers and because of the ZF transmission. This is not taking into consideration the expected reliability of both brands. Excuse me Alex, I just can’t understand why?
The Passport doesn't have a better AWD system. It's outdated, just as the engine. The 9 speed is a slushbox...this car is just so much better in ever way. Being like 50hp less performance is just as good. Apr st1 tune it, and it will dust all competitors.
Very nice video but i would argue that ghe awd “4motion” system in the atlas is just as impressive as the passports awd system, for a reason that needs no introduction; vw 4motion is THE SAME THING AS AUDI QUATTRO. If you have any interest in the history of awd systems you will know that audi quattro walked on the moon before honda knew what AWD even was.
I like it..closest I’ll get to owning a new Touareg again.as for the fake exhaust vents they look fine,,and most people won’t really notice them cause chances are they have them as well. Looks better then just a plain black rear bumper.kinda spruces thing’s up.🤔 and I can’t stand turbocharged engine’s. I’m so glad a N/A engine is still available especially in this present day where everything is turbo or supercharger.if it were only turbo this would be a definite deal breaker for me. It’s faster cause there’s less weight with a four popper, stop glorifying the turbo.
I think I'd prefer the refinement and the smoothness of the VR6.
I just traded in my 2017 Touareg for a 2020 Cross Sport and the verdict is still out!
Is it back yet? i'd like to know
Why would I spend 50K on a cross sport when the atlas also exists and it’s the same price but bigger?
Why not? Bigger is NOT always better
It's like the Honda Passport and Pilot, the price of the smaller Passport is not much different than the Pilot and when you add options, you might as well have bought the Pilot.
Because noone wants the same thing.
naveenthemachine Some feel (me too) this car is superfluous in VW’s lineup
@@dcjohnson2490 Ironically you don't have easier parking either, they are both long. But I guess you don't waste space or weight on the third row seats.
if you are gonna talk about luggage space and give it the upper hand while naming others, wouldn't it be proper to give their numbers? perhaps they are very close
Atlas ride comfort is horrible if the road is not smooth. Why can't VW give better shocks for a suv costing upwards $30k?
There is no way that Outback, Santa Fe or Murano have more leg room than this car. Do not trust the numbers. The Cross Sport has an extra foot of space compared to any of them
I guess the fake exhaust are really no different that fake air scoops or side air vents.
Lots of even luxury cars have these.
Pretty much just VW/Audi
Not a lot of people are buying the Atlas, what makes VW think people will want to buy an Atlas with even less utility?
Does the 4 Cylinder vibrate the cabin at idle? Could be a deal breaker as no engine should be vibrating cabins in today's day and age.
It was fairly smooth.
I think that as shown here there is less "fake exhaust" and more "just a design element." You're getting a sort of bow-tie effect with the license plate sculpting above it. Doesn't bother me.
My Lexus seems to not have come with a check engine light, what a ripoff.
Kia and Hyundai will have it off and they will also turn it off for 10 years
Looks like the new Touareg...
If you want to know how much volkswagen wacked off the rear 0:19
Bad move VW. What people really wanted was a less expensive toureg, something that can compete with the grand Cherokee and actually be used effectively off road
Who’s competing with Grand Cherokee..? Two different cars meant for two different things. This car is build more for the city where Jeep is build for off-road.
The rear looks like pennywise’s face
Highlander
2.0t 7.1 sec from zero to carbon build up.
Yeh it’ll need a catch can from day one
I refuse to buy VW or Audi with the fake exhaust. it’s such a waste and don’t know why they do such a thing. Then The R lines have nothing but a appearance package. Needs more poser and features of an SEL. Version. This being said keep up the fun video but you do need to change the entry song 🙄😁💯
My pick would be the 2021 kia sorento or the mazda cx-9. You fold the third row and you have a 2 row crossover.
Poor mans q8 and urus
congrats on comparing vehicles that are in different segments, 300iq move.
Why does this 4 popper brick looking thing need 265 tires?
It's not light and it is competing with other vehicles that have wide tires as well...
Unfortunately, you left the 2 biggest competitors out; Blazer & Egde. American car bias? Let's hope not.
With their reliability and build, I wouldn't even compare.
This car would really be compelling if it had a larger turbo 4 with like 330 hp and torque.
The VW formula for success? Less vehicle...less motor...more money...Limited color options to the customers...Yeah, That's the winning formula from VW!
I miss my 2000 Passat, which was a budget Audi. VW has been dumbing down cars for the North American market for a decade. Thumbs down on any iteration of fake exhaust tips.
Paying all that money for plastic see there are real exhaust in the suburb outback
So why don't they send the new Touareg to the US.
It would cost too much
@@edipires15 ya well it's more premium than most mainstream carmakers similar SUVs yet cheaper than the GLEs and X5s.
SDav21 actually in Europe a Touareg cost as much as an X5 or a GLE, it’s VW’s flagship car
