We just bought the VW Atlas Cross Sport V6 SEL R-Line AWD with 4Motion in Pure White, and man, is she a stunner and highly competent as well! I came out of a 2018 Chevy Traverse Redline Premier, and was looking for a smaller, but still a bit edgy looking SUV, so after much research and looking, it came down to these two vehicles for me... One look at the RS Cross Sport in that glowing white, with her sharp piano black grill and perfectly placed chrome, and I got that feeling that it checked all my boxes! I liked the Blazer RS, too, and especially enjoyed the looks of the interior, but between the blind spots, tight back seat area, feeling too low in the seat (I’m five foot so I need a seat that can be brought up high!), and honestly feeling like I was just swapping out my Traverse Redline for a smaller version of it, I was personally uninspired and disappointed when I finally got to see the one I wanted in the flesh. On a whim, I drove from that Chevrolet to our local Volkswagen dealership, stalked the lot a bit by myself and found exactly what I’d been looking for! I would, however, only consider the R-Line version, as it’s sleeker bumpers looks very different from the other trim levels. We’ve never had a VW, so the Cross sport has been a refreshing change both externally and internally... Although I liked the lush interior of the Blazer and already knew how the infotainment system worked, I have to say that the Cross Sport’s actually really grew on me, and I also like their CarNet app much better than Chevy’s app. Like you said, it’s awesome for an everyday ride, plus living in an area where roads can be tricky, hilly and compromised by bad weather conditions, I felt the Cross Sport was a better choice for handling such situations - it does have different driving options you can switch into for things like snow, off-road and sports mode! I hope this helps if anyone is in a similar situation and trying to decided between the two! And, please feel free to ask me any questions you have! Thank you!
...just as a heads up; where VW stopped/let off, the aftermarket has something to go in its place. I'm looking at the Altlas/CrossSport/telluride to replace the wife's CX-5, but she's not a VW person after my 15yr experience w/a 04 GTI (from new). VWs have their special "language" and sometimes it takes love/patience to embrace it. The wife would rather be in a Jeep (Grand Cherokee or Wrangler Unl). If it was btwn the two, I'd rather her be in the VW...
What has your Atlas Cross Sport ownership been like over the last year or so with it? Any issues, what do you normally get for mpg on the highway, and any other feedback that you may have now that you've had it for a bit? I love the size, looks, and interior of the Atlas Cross Sport, just have seen some things that concern me with engine issues with less than 100k miles and having never owned a VW before I want to be as sure as possible before buying one.
Same here. We just bought 21 in the same configuration love it. Ride height, powers, power, space etc. I am coming off a ford escape who’s trans blew at 100k miles. This is light year better. When looking for a new car we had one criteria…not American. They break too often.
@@electric7487 it was supposed to came out this year but just like the Z06 covid messed everything up. Unfortunately it's not V8 it's actually a V6 turbo charged
I just got a cross-sport a couple of months ago - love everything about it but it is noticeably underpowered. However, when you're in the car you can't beat the luxury, tech, and sheer amount of space you get.
I understand the want or need to always talk about approach/ break over/ departure angles but let’s be realistic. No one who buys the new Blazer gives a damn about any of those!!!
Blazer was an unfortunate name choice with zero tribute... i was expecting a shortened 1500 with a removable top but get a sun roof on whats basically an equinox instead
We own the 2020 blazer rs and yes its far from the old blazer that was more like a truck. But this is 2020 and most suv’s are far from an suv. But i love the blazer its sharp as hell and fast as f**k!! And it handles so nice on the road. So sporty. Plus the center cluster should of been shows in this video on the rs cause it’s amazing. Its way nicer and larger than my 19 sierra denali. I have no complaints on the blazer and you will get lots of compliments with the sporty look. Price was little high but we took other suv’s for test drives and none had the power this had. So ill pay for power 🤪. Btw great video 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Yep, typical cookie cutter molded interior. With not a single special appointment to be found. It would make a great corporate vehicle used for carpool though.
Near me, Blazers are getting anywhere near 5-10k off right now. It's stupid marketing from the domestics. Why bother setting the MSRP so high, then taking off thousands for anyone that breathes?
To make it look like it’s a big sale. That’s a classic marketing strategy. Set the price extremely high and make it look like you’re saving tons of money and anyone without a brain, which is quite a lot actually, will buy.
Blazer hands down. VW is too vanilla. And tommy, who the hell sits in the back seat w their back arched? Sitting normal...both back seats seem to have adequate head space
The new Blazer, no. But I imagine with AWD it'll probably do fine in the snow or on a dirt road or something. That's probably all the off-road action it'll ever realistically see anyways lol!
Tommy, my dad just bought the VW, I'm 6' tall and I have zero problem with headroom and obviously no problem with legroom. Is maybe your upper torso longer than average?
Thank you for this video. I am leasing a 2019 Blazer in a Premium Trim. I have often thought maybe the RS would be better for me as I like the sportier car. My other car is a Chevy SS. After leasing for many years it is time to buy again and I am staying in this class. As someone who worked for VW at the Dealer level I thought I would love the Atlas when it released but damn that thing is ugly. I really like the new Cross sport especially the V6 R Line SEL. Maybe for that $10,000 it might be time to go back to my roots. Thanks for the comparison of the two cars I am considering buying.
I think by targeting the crossover market so much Chevy missed out on a tremendous opportunity to make a rad mid/small sized off road SUV. It's a space that the new Ford Bronco will fill, the Bronco also gives the off-road enthusiasts an alternative to a Wrangler as well.
Do that blazer got park assist sensors or cameras maybe a pan roof wiper rain detection why is it more because it’s faster or it cost more to ship blazer to Florida
Other than EV’s you’d be hard pressed to find 2 vehicles I could be less interested in,,,,,,,but I watched a great review of 2 boring SUV’s and loved it,,,,,, snuff coffee and TFL, addictive to the max!!! Nathan we’re Athletically Chunky,,,,,,,
VW will cost about 10k just to keep running. Jokes aside the VW boring i'll take the Blazer if i was in that market. Wish the blazer followed the Bronco return and stayed a capable off- roader.
From what's been shown and described here on these two vehicles,..the new Blazer is simply not....a BLAZER, it's just another sporty city running SUV! If I am looking for a 'real' SUV then I certainly want ( and need ) all wheel drive, so if I had to choose between these two,..I too would buy an Atlas WITH all-wheel drive! Thanks for this Nathan and Tommy,..this is a good way to show two vehicle in one video.I like this format!
I like the Atlas Cross Sport, but the fuel economy, to say the least, just isn’t wonderful. But honestly, my favorite aspect of the Atlas to begin with was the size.
Did GM fix the timing chain problem on these, like the v- 6 version on the Camaro? That’s the one thing that’s a big concern for me. If not I’ll stick with being a vw owner.
Just picked up an altas cross sport in PURE GRAY this last weekend for my wife... cross shopped with the Subaru Ascent and Outback.... VW build just feels better. Interior is simple but EASY to use and clean lol. It’s such a comfortable car my wife drive 100 miles a day round trip for work and she loves it with adaptable cruise control. I drive an 18’ WRX and I drive 168 miles round trip for work I hate my life sometimes lol . VW is so great for the price .
It does sound as if a comparable equipt VW with all-wheel drive will rival the cost of the Chevy. That does change the value equation. Not so much apples to apples. As far as taking an all-wheel-drive off-road on occasion, that hardly seems very like for the majority of owners. Nathan has a strong preference for off-roading in his particular case. He is very into 4X trucks and SUVs.
I own the Blazer RS, that sliding gate comes out easy like real easy and can be stored with the spare tire. The back seat is also heated in the rs and is completely controlled by the rear passengers and the seat slides back 2 more positions and reclines so you didn't go real in depth in that backseat review and the average final sale price is 46k not 51k so the VW lost this fight outright and not all rs packages come with 21 inch wheels most come with 18 inches.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen! That ain't no Blazer. That there is a soccer mom's kid transportation device that is barely a notch above a minivan. Chevy, Chevy, Chevy...callin' it a Blazer don't make it so.
I am sure it has been pointed out that no one buys either of these to go off road...kind of pointless to compare that. That said just picked up a slightly used 21 Blazer 3LT with aftermarket 20's and I really like it! Also a 16 Camaro in the fleet the resemblance is real...especially the interior.
After watching. The xt doesn't exist anymore, so that throws that particular option out the window. I still don't really like either of them. However, if I had to pick. I'd go vw. The chevy is nice, but I can't get over the price.
I’m thirty and probably right in the demographic for these vehicles. It’s so weird everyone complaining about the Blazer name because the Blazers I remember we're the ugly boring S10s, so this is a step up. Also, I think the price difference isn't as important when you consider the Americans MSRPs are set knowing they're going to have huge discounts. Most Blazers I've seen while shopping are $6000-9000 off MSRP in Texas.
I can't get over how lopsided the blazer is priced. It literally costs a tad more than a base model Tahoe. Besides a sportier look, what exactly are we paying for here? And don't tell me it's based on the Camaro. It's only based off the Camaro in terms of looks and nothing else.
Absolutely the Blazer. For the money of a really nice interior and lots of power from the engine, totally worth the price. Sat in a RS one at last year’s Denver auto show and I loved it, RS is my favorite. I do love the classic square body K5 but Chevrolet being back a legendary name onto a very awesome looking crossover, I’m cool with that. Don’t care what other people said, it not a bigger Equinox, this is it’s own vehicle. Thanks TFL for finally reviewing the Blazer. Now, do a MPG loop and 0-60 test with a trailer, along with the IKE Gauntlet.
Blazer is a good entry in the segment, just thought GM would have used the name plate for a Wrangler / Bronco competitor instead of using Blazer / Trail Blazer branding as Softcore Crossovers.
Jonathan Losito Nissan prices the Murano the same way, so does the Ford Edge. It’s not just Chevy. Also look at the Honda Passport. The Toyota Venza that’s about to be reintroduced into the market will more than likely have a similar pricing scheme. Kia and Hyundai are the only two average automakers to underprice their vehicles. It’s not just Chevy with a hefty price tag
I have looked at both of these to replace my current 2015 V6 Equinox. Blazer is way too expensive and the owners forum is full of complaints about build quality. Atlas Cross Sport is more competitively priced, but it is a VW and has its own set of issues. If these were my only two choices, I would go VW and hope the service department is better than what I have experienced from the local Chevy dealers.
That cargo bar in the back comes out easily with no tools and stores adjacent to the spare tire under the deck. Did you even know it had a tire under there? Did you really think it doesn't come out? Seems like you didn't even at it, being it has that it is labeled...
I didn't realize that these two vehicles were in the same class. I know the Atlas does offer an optional 3rd row seat which made me think it was closer to a full size. Maybe the Atlas is more comparable to the Traverse or Acadia? I don't know much about this VW.
Stop comparing ride quality. The blazer rs is not just an appearance package it actually has different shocks and springs and a tighter steering rack. The regular blazer rides noticeable smoother without the rs package
Everyone's talking about about the chevy or the vw but nobody's talking about nathan rocking a shirt with everyone's favorite jet powered flying turtle Gamera haha!
As always the best looking version only comes with a soul-sucking, summertime-blast furnace, deep pit of blackety-blackness interiors. Then they throw on some red stitching, like that is going to break it up.
Couple of issues here... First off the VW is only comparable because its a lower trim level to match up with the features on the Blazer. Jump up to the premium VW and the prices match but the VW puts itself on another planet. The Blazer simply does not compete at the price level that you are showing. Just a couple of examples, the Premium VW offers climate controls in the rear, the Blazer does not. The Premium VW offers tech like Traffic monitoring and Traffic Jam assist. Little things like shutting off your brights when the car sees headlights coming at it, then turns them back on when the car passes.... just a TON of extra tech, parking assist both parallel and standard. Both the RS and the Premium will cost about 50k but the VW just out classes the Chevy.
All of these toys are interesting, BUT the reality is cars (truck) are too expensive - $50K for the one you would like to have. BS! The average person cannot afford that, IMO.
So, $51k for a loaded Blazer is a big ask, but you don't even blink or make a big deal at the price of the Tesla CUV's you bought?? Keep in mind the Blazer you have is likely completely loaded. I'm just trying to follow the outrage at the MSRP. And I do realize that Tesla and Chevy don't compete, but still the MSRP on Tesla's is ridiculous, but not made a big deal of.
Love the blazer and LOVE TFL

should try the tow test 4500 and 5000 don't think so ,with 4 people more like 3500 try it on the "ike"
I thought you were gonna say the Atlas costs more lmao. Why would anyone pick an American POS over a German car? 😂😂😂
I don't know much about this VW.
there are two different Atlases, one is 7 pax and one is a smaller 5pax called cross sport or something like it
That back chrome strip on the tailgate on the VW does NOT line up well. They've got Tesla body panel issues going on.
Wow you’re right. That’s bad.
God, you see how much room is in the engine bay of the blazer? That is crazy room.
Stop comparing ride quality. The blazer rs is not just an appearance package it actually has different shocks and springs and a tighter steering rack. The regular blazer rides noticeable smoother without the rs package
The blazer looks like a minivan without the sliding rear doors . Just saying
The intro music is the best royalty-free track on UA-cam 😁
Dump the sun roof, get the 20's and recline the back seat...instant head room..
That's the thing with VW. It may not be as glitzy but they get the engineering right. That's more important.
I completely agree
Is the VW constructed on the same architecture of the Urus.??
Yes but completely different engine
Is this a battle between which will break or fall apart first??? Haha
Love your videos guys!
I prefer the blazer
And you can get a Blazer RS, at least in my city, for $41K
The sliding "gate" easily comes out lol . Im surprised nobody told you guys how easy it is to remove.
A Radio Flyer wagon is my choice over that crap box Blazer.
seats recline in the back of the blazer...so your big head can fit
Atlas: Built in Tennessee
Blazer: Built in Mexico
I'll leave it at that.
All points made were derived with just a few hours/days of driving. Appreciate the subjectivenss.
Isn’t the Ford Edge with these? My sister loves her Edge.
Everyone's talking about about the chevy or the vw but nobody's talking about nathan rocking a shirt with everyone's favorite jet powered flying turtle Gamera haha!
Form follows function. $10k more for a GM product. No thanks to both actually.
The only thing your forgetting is that the Volkswagen will also have a much higher cost of ownership because Volkswagen reliability is crap.
exactly
I will buy the VW Atlas Cross Sport. It's such a great ride.
@Jonathan Losito That's your opinion. You're entitled to it!
I like the Volkswagen it a lot more high quality than the Chevy and it will last long though on the cross sport is pretty
i love the Atlas Cross Sport!!!
I actually changed my mind about the Cross Sport. It gives too much problems. I bought a Toyota 4Runner instead.
Love the review, but now I am confused on witch one to buy :-l
No K5 in that Blazer... 😭
We disagree, I think the Blazer’s interior looks like ass, the Vdub looks much nicer to me.
Skipped both - Lincoln AVIATOR for my driveway
Both of these are throw away vehicles. Cheap interiors and they look like they just want to break.
Anything GM makes is thrugh away , go with the VW
I would take Chev because servicing cost, as VW would then cost same as Chev.
Keep in mind you would have to go to service more often with the Chev than the VW
Chevy Blazer built in Mexico, VW Atlas built in Chattanooga, Tennessee
Atlas hands down
@Jonathan Losito The Volkswagen is not ugly
All of these toys are interesting, BUT the reality is cars (truck) are too expensive - $50K for the one you would like to have. BS! The average person cannot afford that, IMO.
If you went to a Chevy Dealership you won't be leaving spending that much. Maybe 12 grand less than that.
The older guy has breathing issues. Gotta slim down big guy. Live longer man. Keep the videos coming.
what about reliability???
VW has no reliability. its proved through the last years
So, $51k for a loaded Blazer is a big ask, but you don't even blink or make a big deal at the price of the Tesla CUV's you bought?? Keep in mind the Blazer you have is likely completely loaded. I'm just trying to follow the outrage at the MSRP. And I do realize that Tesla and Chevy don't compete, but still the MSRP on Tesla's is ridiculous, but not made a big deal of.
