- If you're looking for a new 3-row vehicle and have kids in child seats, the Atlas should be at the top of your shopping list. At the moment, VW's big CUV is the only one in America that will let you leave three child seats LATCHed into place in the 2nd row and tilt/slide it to easily access the third row. While this may not help folks that have graduated out of LATCH territory, it's certainly a big help for those with kids under ~55 pounds.

I saw a lot reviews about the VW Atlas. These is one of the Best! You made a good overview about the car, the handle of the camera makes me feel to sit right beside you and finally you are the first guy who compares directly other models with the atlas. Well done!
We have 3 kids. 9, 5 and 5. I looked at number of vehicles and eventually settled on the Ford Expedition and Atlas. Bought atlas because of how easy it is to drive around the city while still being big inside. Thanks for great review as always Alex. One of the best reviewers!!
We have 4 kids, 5, 5, 2, and newborn and did the same. We were down to the Ford and the VW. We bought the Atlas and I am so glad we did as well. (Congrats on the twins! 😊)

I would really like to hear the turning radii of all vehicles mentioned in your reviews. It's especially useful to know this for the larger vehicles.
Also it would be great to have more information concerning reliability (what specifically goes bad on particular vehicles), and maybe the yearly cost difference between a vehicle that runs on regular gas versus one using premium fuel or diesel, or one with AWD versus 2WD. These are the things that make up the true cost of ownership, just as much as the differences in MSRP.

This is by far the best video I saw about the Atlas and how family friendly it is. We have a 5 years old and expecting a daughter and was wondering if we can put both car seat (rear facing & front facing) next to each other and still access the back? Thanks so much
We bought a 2018 SEL atlas .. and love it -the Closest you’ll get to a mini van without the sliding doors and trunk space.
On the 2019 Atlas you didn't mention my favorite feature. On the air conditioning, if you push the "rest" button it will run the air conditioner for up to 30 minutes to keep your car cool while you are in the store
Great video. I used it to guide my purchase decision. I did not get the Atlas. But I knew what to look for on the lot based on your video.
To the complainers:
asking for turning radius, etc., You can get that from a spec sheet.
Asking for reliability? Out of scope for these types of reviews.
The benefit of these videos is to see the vehicle in action BEFORE we see it in person. Example: see the atlas on the lot and the sales person moves the middle row forward for you. They make it look effortless. In reality, it is a cumbersome design compared to a one button push on the Pilot and Telluride that is suitable for kids. Atlas missed the boat on that one.
I can tell from the video the interior is not glamorous.
These videoes are just ONE data point We have to have several days points.. including CR , JD Power, etc.
Don't expect to get all your data from a single video.

I have three i car seats. The atlas is the only one that makes functional sense with seats and space. The highlander was way too tight third row and wanted almost $40k for antiquated technology still used a key?? Explorer I could hardly get into back seat. With the current discounts also makes great value
Agree! We have 4 children under 5. This was the only car that made sense. I refuse to drive a mini van and the Atlas was incredibly spacious and didn't cost an arm and a leg. I love mine.
Great thorough review. I have two kids currently in car seats and want one more in the next year. Having the option in the atlas to keep the car seats in it is definitely the deciding factor for us and overall seems like a great crossover

I own one and like it so far. I wish they had an optional turbocharged VR6 engine putting out 375 horsepower also a 10 speed automatic across the lineup. To stay competitive with the competition.
Would love to hear some discussion on the differences of putting the Atlas in Sport. While test driving a SEL 4Motion, I felt that using Sport mode significantly made the steering wheel tighter giving more feel. Almost felt like my CX9.
VW Atlas is a great choice for large families with the practicality and space. It has low ownership cost due to included free services and longest bumper to bumper in the Industry.
And from what we are hearing about reliability you will need that warranty.

as of today and most likley 6 mos from now palisade is selling on msrp so that will change the cost review of palisade and telluride
I thought the 2019 Traverse has the same tilt and slide 2nd row feature as the Atlas but just on one side? So you could leave a child seat latched on one side and still get to the third row but not the other.
I wanted a Telluride, but they are not giving any discounts right now. I got a great deal on my Atlas SE R-line. It had a $7,000 rebate.

I agree with it being the classiest SUV. Timeless styling. Not sure about the Explorer as I have not been up close as you have. And, to be honest, I have not seen the Kia as well. It looks interesting.
Love the warranty and 4 cylinder IF they still offer the 100K warranty on the Atlas.
Alex, at the auto show,the Atlas, and even the Tiquans, all had really, REA::Y hard seats. I can't imagine this being just for the show car...but you give it high numbers for comfort.
Can you install a supercharger (please , no laughing) since I really like power.
forward facing child seat gives the most issues accessing the 3rd but in the blink of an eye they are in boosters which they're going be in the longest.. depending on the type of booster seat its really not that big of a deal getting into the 3rd row
finally! someone who finds something other than the palisade attractive. The VW atlas is my #1 choice for my next car. The palisade is too mismatched looking in my opinion.
Yea I want a 2021 VW Atlas SEL premium with the V6 and AWD. I use to want a Telluride but I changed to the Atlas. And I agree, the Palisade is funny looking in person to me, and a little smaller too
Were I in the market for a larger[r] 3-row crossover, my top pick would be the Palisade or perhaps the Telluride. I choose my vehicles primarily based on interior quality and features, and I like the Palisade's interior -- especially the infotainment screen -- just a bit better than the Telluride's.
I wanted to test drive a Telluride but our local dealership doesn't have any in stock and are about a month out for new inventory. He then said they selling at $3-4k over MSRP. Sorry, not happening for run of the mill family suv.
I love the Atlas, I had the chance to have it as a rental for over three weeks and I fell in love. However, my issues with it are more stylistic than functional. I feel the front end could use a bit of update, something similar to what we see with the front end of the European VW Touareg or with the updated Passat or new Arteon.
It is very ugly, plus the Interior quality needs to get on the Level of the Palisade or even the new Highlander. Reliability is also a concern and VW hasn't promise any reliability and maintenance cost improvements. They have a good warranty though so they must be confident there is some improvement. We'll see how the new ones hold up over the next few years, I really wanna see them succeed.
I had one as well, i loved it but after being in the palisade it definitely was lacking in some areas. Made me wanting more if I were to be buying in that price range. But overall a good car. Oh and the engine was very laggy.

I really just love the being able to fit 5 car seats. Also that the kids don't have to climb over the 2nd row to the 3rd row. Those were huge points for me. We had a Sedona before and car seat arrangement was awful.
Austin Garnier upon searches used cars like atlas found some of these reach 100k plus..reliability was tested
ALEXonAUTO 2018 ATLAS made me to buy 2019 Atlas Highline. In that review he told transmission was from AISIN like Toyota's . I confirmed that with dealership owner. VW makes great VR6 engines. So major trouble spots are taken care. I had no recalls till now. Dont take 2018 model with 8 recalls. Took 18 inch wheels for more cushy ride. Bought an old samsung S5 with android 6.0.1 to integrate into front dash screen for Android auto to watch movies while on drive....Excellent Drive.
My wife and I test drove Subaru Forester, Ascent, Kia Sorento, VW Tiguan and the Atlas. We both really liked the Atlas for it's comfy seats and ride and just how quite it was. Kids loved the space in the rear seats. The Ascent was good, power delivery between the turbo engine and the CVT seemed to surge and stutter a bit but it did ride nice as well.
Great family vehicle, but I can't shake the reliability question. While under warranty, the Atlas would be fine. Palisade, Telluride, Ascent and maybe the 2020 Highlander are on our radar.

Outstanding timing. I'm debating between the Atlas and Explorer ST right now. Thanks! Going captains chairs regardless, so the backseat tilt feature of the Atlas isn't that important to me. The rear seat leg room IS, though (damn rear-facing infant seat!). I know on paper the two are similar (at least in terms of total combined legroom), but the Atlas just seems (or maybe it really is?) quite a bit more spacious. I've learned that reality is not always what you see on paper, so you just need to test everything out yourself. The Atlas advertises 37.6" of rear legroom...that's gotta be with the seats all the way forward, right? And maybe with the front seats all the way back? I'm 6' tall, and sitting behind my driver seat, I had miles of legroom. Testing out the ST next week when it gets to my local dealer, I'm excited to drive that puppy. If its rear-seat spaciousness is a deal breaker, I'm perfectly happy getting the Atlas - it's a helluva well-rounded practical family vehicle.

The folding back seats is a definite plus if you have two child seats
The so-called 8-passenger SUV's: can you fit 3 adults across the 3rd row? Or is the width of the 3rd row bench meant for 3 children instead?
Fingers crossed they bring the TDi back for the Atlas refresh. Would make it most reliable, best mpg and towing. I really think VW needs to bring it back. With the new warranty it would open up a whole new market for Atlas. They’ll probably go hybrid instead but why not do both to go after different customers and sell double the crossovers?
No more TDIs. It was part of the Dieselgate settlement. Too bad, because it would be much better on fuel.

CX-9 still my choice. We didn't need all that space and no kids so it was a no brainer. Much more fun to drive and 310 ft lbs of torque make it pretty quick
I took Atlas to the test and felt myself in it as in cheap plastic box. I had to add money and buy an Audi Q7. My sensation as if moved from Volkswagen Juke to Bentley! That's for sure you get what you paid for...

I felt the interior was great even in an SE model. Rode quite and very smooth, better than the Ascent we test drove right before.
If you had the money to buy the Audi why did you even bother with VW lol. That’s like saying I thought the Hyundai Sonata seemed cheap so I went with the Audi A4.

We have not 1 but 2 Atlas's............... We had another one, but traded it up and got one with more features. I would highly recommend it, for anyone looking for a Mid size SUV. They hold the road and are very safe................ V-Dub love

@@Rockybalboa541 - We have 1 with 84k and 1 with 64k on them. Both have been extremely reliable and very nice to drive. Get's great gas mileage on both for the size. Just took one to New York from Kansas city and back with zero issues.
this is not a child seat champ. No ISOFIX/LATCH connectors in third row! AND when you have car seat in second row installed with seat belts (as you need to over certain weight) you CANT ACCES the THIRD ROW as the belt comes out of C pillar not from the seat! So, TWO MAJOR flaws on designing this car with kids in mind. FYI, I OWN an Atlas, and if I knew this then, I would look elsewhere. Now I have a problem I cant get boosters with latch system for the third row, and have problems arranging car seats and still be able to access third row. I have 4 small girls under age of 7 and its not good.

lol, I would choose the VW Atlas because the Audi's 3 seconds turbo lag is a deal killer.
I've rented the Atlas and test drove the Audi Q7 about a week ago. The Audi Q7 had terrible 2-3 seconds turbo lag. The VW has quick acceleration from 0mph but it only had adquate passing power on the fwy. VW had better ride, soundproof and turning radius than my 2014 TOyota Highlander.
I thought q7 uses supercharger not turbo.
@@GooseVan No, it's turbo. Supercharger is instantaeous like narually aspirated. Cadillac CTS-V's supercharger is awesome.

For the money, safety, reliability, long term purchase, AWD, and all around I would pick the Subaru Ascent or Toyota Highlander. My experience with Korean cars “Kia” is not the best. They are not built to last. Atlas would be an option but this 3rd row suv is very sluggish and I question its reliability. Thank you 🙏
Actually you can leave child seat on the chevy, gmc and buick but is only on the passenger side just like mazda and nissan

Best vehicle review channel on UA-cam! Extremely thorough! Love the comparisons! Was sold on a Telluride then looked at the Atlas more closely and ultimately went that route. Couldn’t get over my own head game of knowing I was driving a Kia. Just have a predetermined disposition of not liking the Kia brand.
Like the new Jetta, it looks great and is full of useful, thoughtful tech.
But like others here, I question VW reliability, and I don't know why Alex, of all people, doesn't make mention of that.

Have an Atlas SEL for about 4 months now. 3rd row comfort is great. 2 adults can sit back there comfortably. So far only 1 issue with a sensor light coming on. It was handled. Also remember it comes with a bumper to bumper 6 year 72,000 warranty (even if you sold it 2 years later, the buyer would be under the same warranty). The only thing I would change is I wish the ride was a bit softer. I have the one with the bigger tires, and it can get a bit too bumpy when you're on bad roads. I can totally live with it, but if I wanted to change something, that would be it.

My wife and I have a 16 mo and plan to have more kids in the future and only have a 4Runner and Altima. But if I had to choose a new crossover, I would end up with the Durango or the Atlas due to size and offerings. Love both cars. The CX-9 and the Palisade are in contention, but something about the other 2 edge them out.

Good review as always - unfortunately there are at least (6) recalls on this SUV, within it's first two years of production. That's dissapointing to say the least, considering they did a lot right with this SUV.

To answer my own question, there is a space saver spare, but the 3rd row seats don’t recline, which is a big bummer.
Nobody ever reviews how wide the drivers cockpit area is. Hip room, knee room, for big guys and gals.
Hate the wheels, and the headlights mount. Other then that, good car
Telluride for me. KIA is on a roll.
For me it would be the Kia Telluride, easy choice.
I'd rather have a car that works reliably instead of fancy back seats.

I actually went with the intention of buying one. I’m short. Had to put the seat all the way up and I couldn’t get over the wide flat hood view. Not sure I could get used to it Guess I’ll keep my van 👎🏻
Subaru assent or Kia Telluride would be my choice
Those are my top 2 choices for my next vehicle I will be buying soon. 3rd would be palisades
I too will be looking at the Telluride and the Palisade. I am a bit hesitant about them being fresh models and no track record of reliability 🇨🇦
The Atlas Crosstour is potentially the redeeming factor of the Atlas. The Atlas looks more like a Truck than an SUV and on the inside it looks more like an old station-wagon from the 1970’s. It should have been styled more like the new Touareg which they unfortunately stopped selling in the US.

The Ascent does’t sell well enough really and it’s notably smaller inside. We generally only compare against the top 4 sellers in the segment.
If I had the money I would get the new Ford Explorer ST.

I’m not sure about styling. It’s trying to have a boxy shape but it does still have some swoops and curves that I don’t really like. The sloped rear glass also isn’t my cup of tea. I just think it needs to pick: rounded and streamlined, or sharp and boxy

Why dont they offer new Touareg in the States any more?
Poor sales with premium price tag and lack of seven seater option
$60k+ for that SUV when an Audi Q7 or base Cayenne could be had for similar money. The Toureag had great offroad chops, but didn't offer very much for it's asking price.

But the new one, available in Europe offers much more then the predecesor. And it looks much better than the Atlas. Current Touareg is a premium offering in SUV market.
I enjoy watching your videos as they go in depth on car reviews, but I can't understand why you keep pushing the VW Atlas on your audience .
Regardless of how good the vehicle is, it is a family SUV aka daily driver and it needs to be reliable which the Atlas is not. It has had a horrible track record in it's small existence in the American market.
I recently had my neighbour got issued a lemon buy back for their Atlas.
Reviews should take into account reliability as not everyone has the luxury of time when their vehicle decides to not work today.
I don't think Alex is wrong here. The practicality of those child friendly seats are huge. I saw a mom climbing thru the hatch of her Ford explorer to get her kid out from the third row.
As cool as the new palisade and other SUVs look, the parents look ridiculous get anyone out of the third.

I prefer performance so I would lean toward the Explorer.
G S the 2020 Ford Explorer has not yet been crash tested rated. However if the new design is anything like other recent Ford chassis designs, I would expect it to be rated among the best. But we have to wait and see.

Our local VW dealership now refuses to carry the Atlas. Even have a blurb on their website explaining the reliability issues and manufacturing defects and the fact that as a store, they had nine of them processed through California Lemon Law. The dealerships do take a hit if they were the seller of a Lemon Law vehicle.

Reliability is horrible. Don't even think about financing it. I lease an Atlas and it has had some problems. With that being said, it's the best car I've ever had. The third row is the best and roomiest of all the three row SUVs. And it's the best looking one as well. If VW can iron out their kinks, it'd be the best SUV out.

He mentioned VW has the longest bumper to bumper warranty in USA. All these models are relatively new (1-2 years old). Hard to predict reliability on something that new?
Just look at Consumer Reports annual car edition. You can find it in a grocery store or CVS/Walgreens usually. They will give you the best ratings for reliability and predicted reliability based on a brand’s track record. VW doesn’t have the best reliability track record so it’s really nice that they’ve got their new bumper to bumper 6yr warranty. However, if you are the type to keep a car till it’s 12+ yrs old, looking elsewhere may be a smarter choice.
Steve Edwards if you’re gonna keep something 12 years there is only 1 choice. I don’t think anyone could argue the highlander is the choice for that.
The biggest downfall is the slow VR6 engine. It was great ten years ago but not anymore.
RDV V I agree. A more performance 4 cylinder engine or a turbo 6 cylinder would do the trick. Maybe borrow the supercharged one from Audi. Why not a diesel.
Wrong it’s quicker than I lot a Toyota by far but gas mpg it’s not to good ,,, I have one it’s good no complaints except mpg but power beats all of them ,,, numbers all of them make the power on4000 or above rpms Vw 2700 and up who’s quicker Vw ,,, pounce number no gimmicks
