True story. I was near the entrance to Disneyland in Calfornia, the evening of Sat. Dec. 23, 2022. And I saw him with his wife and oldest daughter. I recognized him, and called his name. His wife turned around and then he did. And it blew me away. I was lucky enough to chat with him for a few minutes and took three selfies. I remember asking his daughter if she knew how cool he was. She had headphones on and Gary said "She is probably listening to my music". Super nice guy and humble too. It made my year, as I am a big fan of his. First saw him back in the 1980's, and 3 times in the last 6 or 7 years. He is a pioneer in the field of electronic music and very underrated and under-appreciated. He should be in the Rock Hall of Fame, but those a-holes have about a 20 year backlog to catch up on. Happy New Years to all music lovers out there!
Cool. For real. 🙂
Dec 23 today…. Love this comment!
@@dylangrahams just like when people say 'you have 2 choices', no you don't, you have 2 options but one choice.
Gary definatly put this stuff on the map. Among the First to really reach the people with edm rock

Gary Numan is one of the most underrated musicians ever.
So many artists owe this man huge thanks for cutting the trail they followed.
Gary never liked playing hid old hits until Trent Reznor told Gary that he loved the old stuff. Gary said if he can like those songs then so can I....he's a musical trend setter
I was there, in 1979 as a 10-year-old watching on "Top Of The Pops" MAGIC in front of my eyes. I immediately asked my parents for a keyboard, not a piano, and nor piano lessons - they could not afford a synth of any description but I eventually got a Casio MT-100. Here I am now, as a 5-times stroke-ridden punk/metal guitarist watching one of my heroes produce once again the magic that appeared before my eyes in 1979. And I want to be back in 1979, and to be able to be a part of Gary's journey. Those were the BEST times of my life, I will never forget the amazing feelings I got as a 10-year-old on hearing this those decades ago. :(
England 🏴 in the 70s was Magic
There are two kind of people, 1 the people that appreciate Gary Numan's music and 2 the people who don't.
Numan is electronic music... the best frontman for it ever!
Gary Numan is one of the real musicians of futurist music that ever come out of the 80s. He was so far ahead of his time that made him the person that he is in 2022. A genius in the making of over 40 years.
a song that you never want to end!!!
This is so great. His voice is still amazing.
this is the first time I heard this. why does the radio only
play cars this is awesome so is down in the park. Gary is one of the most underrated musicians.
What's hilarious (gonna show my age) is that this song was on the B side of the "Cars" 45 record. It was the first time I liked the B side more than the A side of a 45...
oh wow, then you have to look up "My Dying Machine" back he was all synths, powerful track also when he wore white and blue makeup.
@LUCY ELI ZABETH any good recommendations?
@@edrosa3485 thank you for sharing that.
@@maxwheeler3241 will do.
When I was 11 I bought one of my very first 7" records, Cars. I adored Cars, but ended up liking the flip side (Metal) even more. I couldn't stop playing it.
This live version is fucking amazing.
Here in the UK the B side of Cars was Asylum a haunting instrumental track
Check out the version he did with NIN. It's this and then some ua-cam.com/video/ehMqEXUspfs/v-deo.html
The only one who can combine a nice synth melody with rock. Love his music.
Steve Schmor this is more like the nine inch nails version. Worth a listen, especially the video with Gary in it

new wave / synth pop / synth rock
@@EDDIE.EDDISON yes he is a lovely Man. I met him once and he couldn't have been more Down to Earth and Humble. Great Electronic Legend
The only one huh? Lol. You are sorely mistaken on that one. SMH unreal.
I cant think of another artist who sounds this good after so many years. Most bands/artists go soft and sound cabaret like, Numan has gained an edge. How the hell does that work!!
maybe Sparks
Gary Numan has created tones of great music. Unbelievable that I had never heard about him untill I came across some great songs on UA-cam. Heavily underrated artist.
I get the feeling he's a musician and into that soul, not a showman IMHO
@@xarnego on the contrary, if you see him live you would change your mind.
Gary has been a constant musician since he started in 1977, joining the punk scene just to get a contract.
His break though track should have been Down in the Park, which is now a fan favourite
He has always changed and experimented with different sounds and noises, he even claims to not be a musician but an arranger of noises and sounds.
The music he is producing today is his best work to date in my opinion, and although I still love the earlier machine years, his darker more industrial music resonates so much more with me.
If you get the chance to see Gary live, then do it, you won't be disappointed.
@@martinhickmott8916 Absolutely agreed! Unfortunately, I was unable to attend when he was in town. Still depressed. 🔺
What does "mallory" mean?
When you hear this live it blows you away pure class
"Metal" is by far and away Gary Numan's best song. Moreover, it has to be considered that greatest electronic/new wave fusion song of all time. The video is a brilliant presentation of this legendary piece of music.
Truly amazing! I was 15 when I first heard "Replicas", it was so ahead of it's time. "Are Friends Electric" is one of the best songs ever written in or out of the genre. I was really into 60's and 70's rock & blues at the time and I still am but this album really blew me away and had a huge influence on me going forward. "The Pleasure Principle" was another big album for me. Telekon was okay and I loved the song "I am Agent", "Dance" and "I, Assassin" had a few nice things but after that I drifted away until I heard "Splinter" and everything after that up to now is really sublime. He is the real thing, an honest and intelligent individual who goes out of his way for his fans. He didn't care about money first and always put what he had back into his shows.
This LP changed my life
Am I the only one who knows that the added ending is from his M.E.?
Absolutely KILLER!! 🖤🌹🖤🌹🖤
I knew lol...fits well..
Seen gary last year in Newcastle. after 40 yrs still a brilliant performer. Keep going gary !
Bought the P.P in 79, played it this morning...this is where NIN get inspiration!!!!!! Respect!!!!!!!!!
Really strong lyrics too, Gary is a genius.
The B side to one of the first 45s I ever bought, 1980, 8th grade, the other side was Cars. Brilliant.
I remember seeing him live in the 90s. His encore was Are Friends Electric, and everyone joined in on the chorus. Then he went into Metal, and at those opening chords, the place just errupted.
I could learn to be a man like you
This is one of the best songs ever!!! Ive seen him live and frankly Gary Numan is hands down perfect. His shows are full of energy, expression, and excellent musicianship. I always try to catch him when he comes to L.A. He is a must see
Glad you found us! Numanoids unite!
YES, this in the 70`s was weird space music AND we would stand have twisted singing AND I had this on 8-track tape, member those?
WHOA, I'm old.
His voice is so much better now, this is great
Brilliant Numan song. One of his best. Gets you in the mood. ‘Moral’ is another underrated gem. Followed this guy for 42 years and every tour. Great memories. Numan is a real rock star.
Moral is pretty much a remake of Metal but yes Gary Numan is fab. I saw him live for the 4th time last weekend and it was the best I've seen/heard him. Absolutely brilliant!
I could listen to this song for hours. Gary Numan is killer ♥
My favorite gary numan song ..
A million stars like our sun for every grain of sand. Where there are stars, there may be planets. Where there are planets, there may be music like this. Magic.
Why do I love Gary Numan's music so much? Do I prefer music in a minor rather than a major key? Is it the perfect blend of analogue synths with rock guitars? Or is it the picture he paints of a dystopian universe run by machines? All of these I suspect and much more besides. Like a fine wine, Gary only gets better with age and I've been with him on his journey seeing him perform 'live' numerous times. And yet the fools at the Brit Awards would rather hand out the outstanding achievement gong to people like the Spice Girls, Taylor Swift and Robbie Williams. This guy is original, a true pioneer of electronic music and now a leader in industrial rock, keeping his synth roots at the core. It's a travesty - listen to the song Intruder released 2 years ago. It's epic, although Metal has always been my favourite and this version is just perfect with the reprise of M.E. at the end.
The man's a genius
Voice hasn't changed an absolute Lengend.
When the song "Cars" came out, I bought the album. When I heard "METAL" oh YES! Will always be my favorite by Gary. He's just brilliant. His sound makes me imagine like I'm 'Flying! Thank you Gary Newman!♥️
Numan
Numan; Godfather of Genius.
His First Four LP's were Amazing ! From 'pUnK ' to 'Electronica' ! Those Records were 'Experimental' and produced most of his 'Hits' commercially, which is what most Artists strive for!
Gary never stops experimenting, that is one of his many many qualities! Some things work better than others, that is the case with all artists, he never rests on his laurels and just does a 'Greatest Hits 'Tour (maybe he would make more money doing so? ) He is so creative, still looks amazing, and is adored by 'US' fans! God Bless; Gary Numan, Tubeway Army, Dramatis ! etc
Nice one Gary 👍🏴
Gary Numan rocks!
Gary rocks!
this is first class... perfectly updated version of the Pleasure Principle classic
Still frackin awesome
numan is best i first saw him in concert when i was 18 at demontford hall Leicester then i saw him in Newcastle 02 about 3 years ago im 50 this year and his music will never die faithful till the end im a numanoid true to form😁
What a stunning version indeed!! Numan is a synth genius!!
Such an awesome song.
THIS SONG ROCKS HAD THE 45 WAY BACK WHEN AROUND 1981
My favourite Numan song right here
+Blue Eyed It's not my favorite necessarily, but it's the one that got me to buy the LP of The Pleasure Principle. It was the B-side of my Cars single, and I liked Metal even more. The LP had so much great stuff on it though, like Complex and Tracks. That's the only Numan album I bought, though I bought 3 copies of it - 2 LP's and a CD. 89.3 The Current is from the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Does anyone else from this area remember WCCO news using Tracks for their news theme music?
I agree. I get up and dance-android style-lol
Funny.... I was vising a friends pad whom happened to have the 45 & I too preferred the B-side Metal. I agree, the complexity & the impressively successful use of discord really caught my attention.
Mine is M.E.
i love this song. genx ppl made/make the best muzik
He plays the closing riff from M.E. towards the end. Cool.
Garrett Johnson the nine inch nails remix of this song does it. im not sure who did it first, but gary's a huge trent reznor fan
Holy shit you're right
There's a huge amount of mutual respect between Numan and Reznor.......and the world is a better place because of that!
@@SpeedLimits65 gary was doing an interveiw, and im sure he said it was trent whom add it coz he love it so much.
Yes
Gary Numan RULES.
Very cool. See him live if you get the chance. His shows are always very powerful..
Do you like his newer stuff as much as his older tunes? His newer stuff is Sooo Dark. I really don't get what he's going for....
the man the myth the legend
I have been a fan since the 70s, this is his best !!
Just a genius :-)
This is my fave live version of Metal since 79, mainly because of the drummers drumming in this, since this version I always expect the drum fills to be like this version, I've actually only seen Gary live twice
love that version, don't get much better than this.
What a powerful song! So much oomft! Brilliant 🔥
A true genius
Wonderful.
Brilliant! What a killer version of this classic.
GARY!!!!!!!! I got goosebumps. ::grin::
Sublime. And what a beautiful ending, blending in Films.
Love gorgeous Gary so much I want to see him again absolute genius
gary is great !
fantastic and it just takes me back to great days playing records in my bedroom ,,and i still have and play
This should've been released as a single back in its day......pity as it's SO good!!!
Absolutely agree! ☺
I love the the sound of the bass guitar on this video. Fantastic.
Legend
Went to see Gary last year. Still an amazing singer.
My first experience with Gary Numan was the album Berserker, one of the first LP's I ever bought. Stayed with his career ever since, through ups and downs, triumphs and disasters, the intense disappointments of Strange Charm and Metal Rythm to his return to form on Jagged. Now he's more of a concept, or format and love him more than ever.
I Love Numan, I have since 1979.... but for the past 20 years the genius is playing the keyboards behind him.... Ade Fenton, this guy has kept Numan alive and present
A.....mi....w..m..l ....im just fuckin speechless. The man is just amazing
Still the same vocal sounding after so many years 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Bowie, Eno, Gary ,Trent all get it done Great life experience thru all there genius rest in peace Bowie. all great story tellers thank you 🙏🏼🙏🏼
That's what's missing in the past number of decades to today's electronic or electronica. ----ROCK with eerie dark melodies and sounds. You can have your dance, i'll rather ROCK.
Starting at 3:50... Am I the only one that want's this to go forever.. Like Freebird?
Absolute Tune❤
Would have been so awesome to have been in that room !
Love Love Love Love Love.
Wow, just loving all over this!
Sounds as great as ever!
The transitioning towards the end is the best part 3:53, would love to hear a version that incorporates that part more
Listen to NIN version of metal. You will hear the same ending.
Chill down my spine 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love you so much gorgeous goth Gary you are so amazing babe xxxxxxxxx
Well that was really, really good. Thanks for posting.
So excellent and timeless in its execution,IMO. There like dancers who get into part park feel:)
Fantastic!
THIS! This is the proper version of this song. Creepyifying intro? Yes please! Bass and guitars with more umph? Ohhh yeah
Wow what a man
Perfection.
Anyone who likes Gary Numan but hasn't heard the rerecording of 'A Prayer For The Unborn' from 'Hybrid' you have to hear it. The chorus is a killer!
Cars has always been a closely held anthem for me through the years. I had to check this out, so glad I did. It's everything I hoped it would be, did not disappoint. I need to hear more, and again...
He is so damn punk. Love him.
Gary Numan on THe Current?! That's great. Thank you guys for uploading!
One of his best.
Just pure fucking amazing!!
Saw Gary live in Manchester UK last October. Absolutely fantastic, if you get the chance take it, I waited 36 years..... FOOL!
Yeah I saw him last week, in Leeds, waited 38 years & I feel the same about myself! Have you seen him on the Intruder tour he’s currently on?
Odd, when Gary sings at a higher pitch, he sounds very much like himself from his earlier years. Great instrumentals in this version, BTW.
He sounds like Bill Monroe the farther of Bluegrass, different music same high pitched voice!
Very German Industrial sounding, it's amazing.
I think so too. His voice is well preserved...
Really he could just stand there and speak the words and you'd feel the power
