Ashley Nails by Shwee Yeah its hard when you grow up not talking about things. I’ve tried having a Pap smear twice now with no luck. First time I just clenched up too much since its painful for me (for whatever reason) and second time I had to take Valium but even then it didn’t help and turns out I was bleeding even though it was 2-3 weeks before my period. Great so now I have to get everything checked in case there’s something going on. The most stressful experience I think.

I finally had my first Pap smear 2 week ago, despite being mentally traumatised I survived...apparently. Worst few minutes of my life I basically just clenched right up and held an awkward position with a firm gasp on my thighs. Awful just thinking about it; it was the 3rd attempt this year so I was basically noping the entire time but the dr managed to use one of the tiny tools. Just got the results today, all good thank God because it’s going to be some time before I even want to think about doing that again. I don’t get it women talk about it being uncomfortable for me it was like being stabbed in the vagina, uncomfortable doesn’t even come close!

So true and made even worse when they ask questions of a personal nature which then freak you out even further! I think they like to think of us as robots and not vulnerable human beings. Sadly no surprise that the UK's number of women taking up cervical screening has fallen to less than 20%. Another stat I have read is that a thousand women undergo further examination after having a false positive result and only one of those thousand will actually have the disease!

Even better - if any personal questions can be asked when one is fully dressed and facing the person across a desk instead AND being given a FULL explanation as to WHY the question was asked instead of being so tactless and thoughtless. Put it another way - showing the person having the test FULL respect.

Amber Rose OMG Not trying to scare you but my first Pap WAS HORRIBLE AND PAINFUL. I’m not sexually active yet so that made it worse, and the tool was a medium size instead of a small size. It hurted so damn bad and the female doctor didn’t even use lube. When she left the room I even cried a little because of the pain. I felt so vulnerable LOL. I was new to the procedure and I didn’t even know there was lube included. If she would have used lube maybe it would have been a lot easier and less painful.
Now I’m in the army and have another one in two weeks. I explained to them my experience and they are gonna make it more comfortable for me regarding the size and lube. Pray for me and wish me luck!! 👌🏽🤦‍♂️

I felt the same way! I can't use tampons either and I had my first pap smear before I was sexually active. Not gonna lie, it hurt. Yeah it hurt. But it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and now that I've had a few I've learned to try to relax as much as humanly possible (which isn't easy) and just count the tiles on the ceiling lol. I had some minor pain the rest of the day (the type where you take an ibruprofen and forget about it) but haven't had that in the last few I've done. It's not pleasant and I still dread it but it's for my own health and it's usually just 45 seconds of my life once a year so really worth it and don't worry its not as terrible as it sounds.

@@taylorsannicolas6000 yikes! next time u see your gyno ask her too warm under water and to lube up with surgical lube. and should be few sizes there small which is pediatric and virgin comfort ones and regular. or even plastic speculum in small size as two sizes, a speculum should not be painful it never comfy. maybe get another gyno though doesn't sound like she has good bedside manner. so not professional. yikes that sound so traumatizing i was 18 and still in high school. when i had my first because i have pcos and was on pill. only had one size speculum and well it hurt lots so was removed so only swab inside. my doctor actually refferred me to places that should have other options. man i would have gotten up after saying no want second opinion grab my clothes get dressed and walked out if i had that experience. do not ever let a doctor tell you too sensitive for their liking and that you are exxagerating so arrogant of some doctors. good luck in future. should only feel some pressure sometimes feel slight cold or just wet from surgical lube. pain isn't supposed to occur. and when see gyno always ask questions ask to see any instruments if not quesay. sometimes helps calm down enough.maybe asking every detail how speculums work too can help. not scare or gross out but sometimes when i am just going for an internal there will be a little blood on blades. and told very common.

This would have been nice to learn about in school. Was it in the sexual health curriculum? Maybe but clearly not mentioned nor demonstrated enough. This also goes for male prostate exams. Our reproductive organ health was barely spoken about. I'm 23 and have avoided getting it done. And my ex refused to even let it happen because he clearly knew nothing of it but held prejudices. I wish I knew that the speculum is no bigger than a tampon. Or that it's really a simple process. I would have gone a long time ago.

This lady came into my high school and taught us a little bit about everything (she is a sex health educator) and I was surprised at what she taught us. She talked to us about what to expect and what they are actually doing(swabbing the cervix, etc). She even brought in some of the tools that they use and showed us that it’s not as scary as it may seem. I’ve already been through sex Ed at multiple schools because I’ve moved so many times, and am in a health academy and had to go through multiple units learning about this stuff so I was pretty much rolling my eyes at having to relearn the basic stuff. But we were surprised and actually got to learn something and she gave most of us peace of mind. I’m really happy she got to teach us useful things instead of just how to put on a condom, ya know?

They really aren't that bad. When you need to have one, speak to friends and family members about who they see and who they have had good experiences with. The female Dr I saw for my first one when I was 18 was kind, gentle, patient and it didn't hurt and I barely felt anything. Personally, I find pap smears easier than the dentist, by far.
If you have a friend who tends to be dramatic, don't ask them for advice because they will not offer you useful advice and they will just make you more nervous with a ridiculous and exaggerated story. Ask people who generally give you good, reasonable, trustworthy advice and who are not prone to exaggeration and storytelling.

@@k-mac5136 If you know and like your Dr, then it will most likely go well. Let her know that you are very anxious, if you are very tense it might be painful. She might be able to prescribe you an anti anxiety medication if you think you might panic, speak to her about that in advance. My advice, make yourself as relaxed as you can on the day. Have a good nights sleep the night before, in the morning eat a breakfast that you like, do something that you find fun and relaxing then have another yummy meal again before seeing your doctor. Have a treat for yourself afterwards as well so you have something to look forwards to. I work in a Dr's office taking blood for blood tests and the patients who find it easiest are the ones who are happy, well rested and well fed. People who are tired, stressed, sick and or haven't eaten tend to find it more painful and are more likely to feel light headed and/or nauseated during and afterwards. I just had mine 10 minutes ago and my doctor was super sweet and the nurse that came to help her was also helpful. They were both talking to me trying to get my mind off of what they were doing and honestly it wasn’t that bad like people are saying it didn’t take them that long literally only took maybe 15 seconds the most and they were both done. Ladies don’t be afraid it’s okay !

Today I had my first ever pap smear. I saw a woman (I would advise anyone doing it to get a woman too as they would of likely had one before and understand to be more careful as they know how it feels) and I was so anxious I had a panic attack.
I managed to do it, and honestly the whole thing isn't a big deal at all. I was worried the device would hurt going in/be too big, but it's not (and I don't have penetrative sex, I'm a lesbian but I have emotional issues with penetrative sex).
It took maybe a minute total, not even that. It was a sudden shock of being uncomfortable when she opened it more, it didn't really hurt, but she told me my muscles were incredibly tense from being so anxious, hence why it made the situation worse.
Now that I've done it, it's not so bad. It's not pleasant, but if you ask if you can play music on your phone or have some audio distraction, it makes the whole thing less clinical and "invasive".
I only took off my pants, and had a sheet over me. I didn't feel the swab inside, and overall the worst part was when she expanded the speculum. But she did it bit by bit and said for me to say something if I felt pain, but i was more mentally worried than actually feeling anything severe.
That's all that was done, doctor didn't feel around with their fingers afterwards as it was strictly pap smear. But I would recommend discussing exactly what will happen beforehand if you're nervous. And only do it with a doctor who you feel comforted by.
Overall: not a big deal. GP's see hundreds of vaginas a month, if not more. To them, there's nothing weird or strange about you, and they're just working.

I just had my very first one and my doctor was very professional and explained everything as she was doing it. The tool was uncomfortable but not excruciatingly painful (I think it was because it was cold). I did not enjoy it but it was over fairly quickly, and I learned that everything is good which is what I wanted to know. I had a very knowledgeable experience! Ladies you want to make sure that everything is well, and it's good to have that professional opinion. I was not excited about going, but wanting to know how my body is doing outweighed the very little discomfort I did experience.
The thing that contributed to my discomfort was my own shyness about my body, the florescent lights, the exposure, the coldness of the room (which was probably about 68- 74degrees F ), and the slight chill and textures of the "instruments" used to examine the area. All these factors can cause you to tense.. so I suggest to be as relaxed as possible. Nothing about this is meant to be painful, but keep yourself calm and relaxed and it will be over before you know it.

I’m so afraid to get this done again.
I went when I was 19 (I’m 23 now) and it was so painful, she couldn’t even get the speculum in because I clenched up. She took it out and asked after a few minutes if I wanted to try again but I couldn’t. All she could fit was a long, skinny cotton swab and even that hurt and it caused me to bleed afterwards (like an actual bubble of blood came out when I got home) she tested for STDS/STI’s and everything came back fine.
I have horrible cramps tho and went to the hospital for it last year, apparently I have cysts in my ovaries. I just can’t bring myself to go through this again, not to mention I was sexually assaulted so that’s where the fear comes from as well. I just can’t relax. After I was sexually assaulted I didn’t have sex for 4 years. This year I’ve started dating someone and he made me feel comfortable but even then, when we have sex I push him away and he has to go in very *very* slowly. Idk what to do, I wish they’d give laughing gas or a Xanax or something

It was thankfully very quick and my doctor was very kind. She explained each step before she touched me. Unfortunately for me I was still a nervous wreck. The tool used to look inside (idk how to spell it) was fine on insertion, hardly noticed it, but once it was open...oh holy hell fire did that hurt a LOT. Apparently if you're sexually active it doesn't hurt at all. But if you're a virgin it hurts like hell. Fun. I quickly informed her that THAT HURTS and she moved very quickly and kept a calm soothing voice. Overall, not my favorite experience. Still not sure if I'd rather do that again or get cervical cancer.

I feel like we really take for granted the fact that pap smears help detect one of the only screenable cancers and how because of that, when found early, cervical cancer has a really good cure rate. It hurts seeing all these horror stories from people about their obgyn but dont let that bad experience stop you from looking after your own health. Find a doctor who works better for you and go get these tests done. Its uncomfortable yes, but it could save your life, early detection is key!!!

I promise they aren't as bad or as scary as they sound. I have had one, it was quick, simple, easy and not embarrassing or even uncomfortable. I was really nervous and I worried about my panties, and was feeling really uncomfortable about having my private parts on display, but a good Dr will wait for you to undress and fold your clothes and hide your panties and give you time to lay down and cover yourself with a sheet. Personally, I find getting a pap done to be easier than going to the dentist.
If you are worried about having it done. Have a look at the reviews of your local Dr's who do pap smears. See what people say about them. Look for someone with a reputation for being kind, gentle, thorough and compassionate. A good Dr won't make you feel embarrassed or ashamed. When you meet your Dr, say that you are nervous and worried and they will treat you gentler.
If you are under the age of 18 and aren't sexually active, there isn't a very compelling reason to have it done.

At about 15, I had abdominal pain. The doctor decided to do a pelvic exam. More surprising than that was that my mom allowed it. She would come in the exam room with me even as a teenager and that was embarrassing for me. So this doctor was frustrated that I was terrified and kept yelling at me to relax. Although we hadn't even talked about sex, I wished my boyfriend was there instead of my mom. He would have at least held my hand and likely would have told the doctor to stop being a jackass. Finally he quit, saying I was being uncooperative. Another doctor found that I had a bladder infection which was causing the pain. I was so traumatized that I didn't let another doctor try again for 20 years.

It’s over in less than 10mins. My doctor was very nice and talked to me the whole time. It’s more pressure than anything and by the time you feel the pressure, it’s over!!!! Definitely should’ve never waited that long, it wasn’t that scary at all.

What annoys me about the annual gym visit is how they can NEVER remember the difference between room temperature and body temperature where the speculum is concerned! Average air temperature in a doctor’s office is what, 65 degrees? And average body temperature is 98.6. You do the math. So they’re sticking a room temperature object into a space that is normally over 30 degrees warmer, so it’s gonna feel like an ice cube in there. And then they wonder why we clench up!

Nope nope. I have zero control over my pelvic floor so “relaxing” just isn’t a thing. Even when the rest of me is relaxed, my pelvic floor is still tense. Tense is it’s resting phase. It only gets worse when something is about to be shoved in it. Can’t even use an itty bitty tampon or put my pinky finger up there without crying in pain. I’m 24 and have yet to have a pap smear. I’ve had one pelvic exam and that hurt enough. You’ll have to knock me out or numb me to get me to do this. I’ll take my chances. I’m not willing to get traumatized for it.

Used to say you needed an exam as birth control could cause side effects, but this is found now to be untrue. If they won't give you birth control without an exam, go to planned parenthood or on line for pills.
