Its absolutely amazing that this exists as a video for women getting their first pelvic exam, I'm sure its helped a lot of people overcome their own anxieties and helps them understand what to expect.
They were eye fucking each other, his feigned indifference is blatantly obvious and her accismus was evident from her not blinking, with a dazed stare.
Lindsey is very brave to share such a personal video like this for those worried about visiting their OBGYN. Thank you Lindsey, for putting yourself out there for our sake.
And having a male obgyn at that , I just now switched recently from female to male , the doctors office is Catholic based medical practice too so I switched to them 😊❤
Some people need to understand that doctors can completely switch how they look at the human body once they are at work. It just becomes...a body. No level of eroticism whatsoever during such check ups.
Demian Haki Same thing with morticians and people investigating dead bodies. It'd be pretty overwhelming if you're constantly thinking about the person the body belongs to. :\
Erick Wright True. Also, they obviously still think about the person in terms of maintaining dignity, but it simply becomes a completely different focus on the body. Like the different perception between seeing a body presented in a biology book vs. in a nude magazine. Massive difference.
Demian Haki It's called being a professional. Never let personal feelings interfere with your livelihood. Your boss at Burger King might like you, but if you have to be fired, he's gotta do it.
Demian Haki Also, they've seen so many bodies that even conventionally attractive people don't typically bug them. My grandma's a nurse, and some of my friends' parents are doctors.
Those plastic speculums with the light are so much better than the metal ones. Much smoother and not as cold, which makes the experience more comfortable.
Rockapella66 I was in my late 20's the first time I had a heated speculum used on me. The doc also had socks over the "foot holders" as Dr. Black calls them. It's amazing how much these little things can help .
This was an OUTSTANDING video, especially for gals who have not get gone to have a pelvic, or for the guys who are curious what their loved one experiences. Thank you Dr. Doe for your bravery, wisdom and insight. And thank you to your doctor; he seems like a kind, compassionate doctor that any patient would be blessed to have! Thank you as well for all of your hard work!
i had absolutely no idea what happens in these pelvic exams and have been super fearful of when i have to start getting them, but seeing it be so simple/fast/not awkward at all was such a huge relief! thank you lindsey!
sexplanations I honestly have my first PAP on the 27th and have been getting increasingly nervous. But I don't understand, a lot of women (even that i know) say they experience extreme discomfort or even pain. Which experience is more common?
thisisthedelia I had my first one about a month ago (I'm 20) and I was extremely nervous about the whole process and if it would be awkward and if it would hurt, but it was pretty easy, very quick as you can see, it is slightly uncomfortable and I did feel crampy during the pap smear and a bit after but it went away quickly. It's really not that bad and it's good for you.
thisisthedelia I'd say that what Lindsey described is pretty on point. Sometimes I will experience minoring cramping afterward as a result of the cervical scraping, but not always and it resolves itself quickly. Some women could have a disorder that causes them to experience discomfort or pain when inserting objects into the vaginal canal, if that is the case, I would understand describing the process as painful.
+nat5309 +ComplicatedSalad Well this is good to know! This makes me feel better...which is good cause I hear it's also important to relax (tense muscles and all that).
I truly appreciate the work you’re willing to do to make others feel more comfortable🖤🖤🖤 Edit: as a teenage girl I should at some point fairly soon go to a gynecologist. A couple years ago I was pretty certain I had a yeast infection and wanted to go to the gynecologist. My mom already had an appointment for herself so she asked her doctor about me coming in. The doctor told my mom it would be traumatizing so I should go to my pediatrician instead. I didn’t want to do this because I felt I would be more comfortable with someone who looks at genitalia all day everyday. I ended up never going. So something like this definitely makes me feel a lot better about my inevitable future😂🖤
I didn't read all of the comments however, Stirrups are not for horses. They are for humans when riding horses so they don't fall off and they are attached to a saddle which again, is for the human feet to help them not to fall off. Love your stuff!
Right I thought that Dr’s comment was stupid like nobody would think you’re horse putting your feet into stirrups maybe he should’ve said some people might feel it’s a sexual connotation if anything
I'm 21 and I've had to get a pap smear once now. I have CPTSD and that whole experience was absolutely horrible. I sobbed the entire time I was shaking and it made it harder to physically put the speculum in. Watching this video, while it was hard to watch like I'm shakey right now.. it also really helped remove a bit of the irrational fear? Because its tied to my CPTSD it's not going to go away just because of this one video but seeing it happen to someone else and being safe as I watch and seeing how easy and quick it can be, it's amazing. It's really really amazing that you made this videos for a whole list of reasons but I just wanted to say thank you for helping me with my particular experience ❤
I've heard a lot of horror stories about male gynecologists being inattentive and dismissive towards female problems, so I've always been somewhat sexist when selecting my gynecologist. I'm so glad to have seen this video - Dr. Blake was very professional and caring, and it made me realize that a doctor's gender doesn't have any bearing on skill. I love my current gyno, but the next time I move cities I will not automatically eliminate a doctor based on gender. Thank you for helping me see that my fears were based on prejudice, not fact, Lindsey!!
amagicbeanbuyer opposite here : D When I learnt, that my stately, very, very prude grandma actually goes to a male gynecologist, it blew my mind! But in general, I go for online ratings and have never been disappointed. Due to frequent moving I had to find a new gyn about evere 3-4 years. One time I had a female gyn, who was a... horse. She was really good and educated me well and explained things about my body. she was one of those doctors where you feel good about asking even very emberassing questions - super important! But she was very rough during the exam. She never hurt me, but it was an uncomfortable experience. Now I have a very neat old gentleman (simply because he is insanely well rated in the area i live) - and justly so. Same thing: uncomfortable questions are perfectly fine to ask, he's very attentive and careful and experienced. One thing is very odd though. He moved to new rooms, which are very fancy and decorated with modern art. one of the art pieces is the shape of a woman in 3d coming out of a metal canvas and she's looking... very happy with her naked body - lounging, presenting herself. it's racy. And the sculpture has a prefect victoria's secret body. It is obviously abstract, has cutouts and is not meant to be a real woman, but... this prefect shape is the thing you see before going into the exam room. I am pretty sure, this is actually meant to make people feel more comfortable, but it could have the opposite effect on people who are insecure about their body shape.
amagicbeanbuyer You never know, actually. They say male doctors are usually more polite and considerate, but I wouldn't go to one of them, because... ugh! However, in my country (Russia) you may experience all the circles of hell in a female gynaecologist's consulting room: slut-shaming, homophobia, have-babies-and-it'll-pass lectures, have-penetrative-heterosex-and-it'll pass lectures, rude and painful treatment, etc etc. The first time I went to the gynaecologist I was 22 - I was THAT scared by horror stories from both IRL and the web. This doctor is also my mum's doctor - so I wasn't even very nervous because I knew she was good. There weren't even any surprized comments on my being a virgin at this age - and there could have been, although it's clearly inappropriate for a doctor. But I would never risk going to a strange doctor - it's fraught with psychological trauma for the rest of my life.
amagicbeanbuyer I admit, I prefer female GYNs, given the choice. I've known women who would "NEVER let another woman touch me down there." The best GYN I ever had looked like a very stereotypical butch lesbian, probably late 50's. Best exam ever, because I barely knew it was happening and then it was over.
amagicbeanbuyer I've had female Gynos who were incredible dismissive. And I've had very understanding male ones. It is a person thing and not a gender thing.
At my last appointment I told my doctor I was having pain during sex and they proceeded to tell me it was because of the position I was in. But it 100% wasn't. I hate being ignored about what I'm feeling.
Unfurtunately, many doctors are a little too impatient when we try to explain our problems :S If the problem stays, you shouldn't hesitate to go see another doctor at a different clinic! It's a hassle but if you feel it might be a physical/health problem, you deserve a second opinion on the matter.
KatrinaKingsOfLeon I've found going to a family planning clinic rather than a GP is often better as they are used to dealing with those issues and aren't so quick to dismiss stuff. There are clinics all over for people when it comes to sexual health.
KatrinaKingsOfLeon If it's a burning pain, it may be an infection. And some doctors are jackasses - if you can, try to see a doctor who will listen to you.
+KatrinaKingsOfLeon I worked for a gp for 8 years. Not every doctor is a fit with every patient. If you find a doctor isn't paying attention to your concerns and you don't have a good relationship, the best thing to do is find another doctor. It doesn't necessarily mean the doctor you were seeing is bad, just that he or she is not the one for you. For these issues, it's best to find a gynecologist that you connect with. I talk to my gynecologist about genital health AND emotional health. I talked to her about my relationship that ended and how devastating it felt to be single again at almost 30. She listened to me and gave me an view on how to look at a relationship that wasn't healthy. It's so important for a woman to have a doctor she feels comfortable with. I hope you find that.
I have been so scared to get a pelvic exam ever since I figured out what they were. This video has taken my preconceived notions and flipped them on their head. Thank you so much, Dr. Doe!
This is so incredibly helpful. I have my first exam coming up in about a month and I have so much anxiety surrounding it. This is really helping me to feel prepared and more comfortable about it.
The woman that is taking the exam is the livelest UA-camr I ever seen and so interesting and enthusiastic woman I like to watch her video so much! It's amazing! Thanks for the honest reactions!
I always feel uncomfortable for days after getting mine. Also, I would like to point out the whole speculum size thing has no relation to your own physical size. Every doctor assumed because I am a very large person (more than 350lbs), that I would need a large speculum, but my last doctor finally realized that it was nowhere near the right size, and got me the really small one and although it still was uncomfortable, it was a LOT better.
I wish all doctors were like him. I've had some who treat the body as just a physical thing and totally ignore the fact that there's a person in here and I require a little warning before you stick your fingers up my backside. I usually make people buy me dinner before doing that! At the very least more lube
As a guy who has no relevance to what is happening here, except perhaps being a first year med student, I just wanna share how incredibly comforting I found Dr. Blake's presence.
This is a very informative and helpful video. My 24 year daughter with autism is getting her first Pap and this video will help her understand the process. Hopefully it will help her have a better experience.
Brilliant episode, thank you Lindsey, and pass on our appreciation to Doctor Blake! It sounds as though at first he wasn't sure quite what to expect or how to handle this normally delicate, discreet and potentially embarrassing procedure with a camera crew and such an upbeat and non-ashamed patient, but you must have set him at ease because by the end he was certainly getting into the spirit. Chatting and volunteering hypothetical information (informative to the viewers!) instead of tunnel-visioning in on your "nothing to see here" specifics or bustling matters along as doctors are more accustomed to doing in these cases. :3
Wow, this is so freaking brave but will help so many young ladies! I had no idea what to expect from my first pelvic exam and no amount of Google searching helped. I can't even imagine having being filmed while having a pelvic exam!
Also just a side note, my experience is an example of why shows like sexplanations and people like Lindsey and her team are SO important and need support and to be shared with the world. I was going into a brand new experience. I didn't know what was going to happen, how to prepare or if I should be afraid. This video made it seem like a normal and healthy thing. It made it relatable. If Lindsey can do it and not be scared and be relaxed so can I. And hearing what the dr is going to do and more importantly hearing from Lindsey herself how it actually felt was really informative and comforting. I know what to do and expect now. I cannot emphasis enough how important this channel is to my life and how much I hope that as many people as possible get to experience and learn from it.
This is going to be SO helpful to SO many girls. I think a lot of young women push this off because they think it's going to be terrible and painful, so you showing that it's REALLY not that bad will give a lot of people the courage to go in. It's also really important to have a good doctor. I like how he goes in like it's no big deal- cause to him, it really isn't. For my last exam, my OBGYN went from joking around right before the exam to speaking to me as if I was a frightened baby bunny in like, 2 seconds, haha. It's also really important that they tell you what they're doing as/before they're doing it.
I agree with you but at the same time, it's different from the average cherry personality of doctors I've been around so it does make me more anxious lol
i had a man the first time and i felt really uncomfortable because he minimized my opinions. i went to a female next appointment and she was super chill and understanding. she answered my questions throughly and made the actual exam a breeze. my point is, an obgyn is not a “one size fits all” match. if you have a bad experience with one that doesn’t mean you’ll have a bad experience with all. definitely get recommendations from those who you trust.
I had the opposite experience. I went to a woman GYN and she was horrible. She couldn't understand why I was so nervous and practically made fun of my anxiety. The next time I went, I saw the male GYN in the office and he was wonderful. He kept assuring me that feeling anxious was absolutely normal. He took his time and explained everything he was doing. I've gone to him ever since.
Besides the benefits that this video has for people with vaginas, it's very important that people with penises also watch. I would like to be a father some day, and if I have a child with a vagina, I would like to at least be able to have a resource where I can help them understand the importance of genital health.
Wait, are we now suggesting that the words "boy" and "girl" have no useful place in our day to day vernacular? This is a very deep rabbit hole your heading down here. The world needs to start getting way way better with how it treats sexuality but this may be an uphill battle that's not only unwinable but worse, possibly wasted effort that could go towards far more pressing and serious issues we currently have. I didn't choose where I happen to reside on the Kinsey scale, nor did I choose my gender but we need some language to talk about the world on a day to day basis and in general terms. I'm the first one to agree that nobody perfectly fits a general label. We need words that can communicate simple and general concepts. True the world is more complicated than that but we have words when we need to get into specifics. I don't say to my child "good morning person with a penis". I say good morning son. If it turns out his sexuality strays from such a generalized term in the future he will have an open and accepting environment waiting for him. I'm open to discussion about this stuff, I have never been bigoted or closed minded. I am practical though and this kinda feel like calling "blue", "light in the 475nm range". It's awkward and its focusing on details too specific to have any day to day practical meaning.
Not at all! You can refer to your child as boy or girl/son or daughter whatever. People with vaginas was used simply for inclusive purposes. Because not all people with vaginas identify as female. So in order to be inclusive in this post, that is how I referred to them.
Now that I'm thinking about it, how does "father" get a pass when boy and girl didn't? Should we still be calling a person with a vagina who identifies as male that is impregnated and has a child a mother? Or a father? What if we reverse all of those pronouns, it's just as confusing. A person with a penis that identifies as female who on the Kinsey scale trends towards gay but identifies as bisexual impregnates a person with a vagina who identifies as a male and brings that person with a penis or a vagina to term is called, what? Father? Mother? I think the person who is the subject of discussion gets to decide that for themselves. On the other hand, should we not all have some common words that we all kinda understand even though they don't always fit perfectly into the complexity of greater humanity?
also i loved that last comment at the end. speculum sizes do differ and often times they default to a smaller or average size since often that is all they need but i myself need a larger one since my cervix is really far back. definitely never be ashamed to ask for a bigger one. it has no correlation for being a "loose" woman.
For anyone who is getting their first pap sometime soon: When I got my first one done, my doctor also did a couple of swabs for STIs (chlamydia specifically). The pap itself feels like a pinch or a cramp but the swabs don't really hurt at all. as well, for many young people, the cervix might bleed a little the first couple of times you get it done (you'll see blood on the little brush and maybe some spotting in your underwear). my doctor said this was completely normal though. good luck, everyone!
Wow, Dr. Blake gives a fantastic pelvic exam!! Avoiding triggering language, telling you what to expect, explaining what he's doing...fabulous! I'm watching from the perspective of someone who has taught students in health care how to give pelvic exams, and this encompasses essentially everything I would teach! A great tool for people learning how to give safe, consensual, and comfortable pelvic exams
Yeah right you guys are perverts . The newspaper are full of perverted doctors and perverted nurses . Go and read nurses boards etc you read them and you will never ever have another opposite gender examination my own experiences have been awful I first hand experienced these perverted nasty nurses with stupid grins on their faces !
I’m sorry I’m 60, and a bit old fashioned. I have had male gynecologists before but prefer females. I remember one time the male gynecologist was very good looking. VERY embarrassing! I have heard horror stories but will refrain from sharing them here. How awkward for her to be so cheerful while a male gynecologist is doing the exam, her laughing and joking with him AND it is being filmed! OMG! I would be so totally embarrassed! Kudos to her!
This lady is a real trooper. I just stumbled onto this while on another video on urology and am glad I did. I think it will be really helpful to many girls who will have to do it someday, sooner for some than others. Love Lindsey's bubbly and enthusiastic spirit, and that smile that makes her face sparkle!
This is fantastic thank you Dr doe I had an ex girlfriend who hated going to the doctor because of a history of bad news in the family health and she had extremely nervous time going when I went with her which was the first time she went in years for a checkup watching videos like this I believe would have calmed her down and make her feel more comfortable great work you are the best
ahhh this came at the absolute perfect time!! i have my first ever pelvic exam on monday and it really helped to see this. i'm still a bit nervous but hopefully everything will go smoothly!
StarsNight123 it went great! i mean, it wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world, but i'd get a pelvic exam done over going to the dentist any day, hah.
I actually cried during my first exam. I was not prepared for it to be as painful and uncomfortable as it was. :( I do have some health issues though so I'm sure it's less of a burden for people who are healthy. Hopefully next time will be a lot better.....
A gown and a sheet? "Pelvic" Exams in Germany are a little different ^^ I've never had to change in something else. My doctor always starts with a talk about what I might want to talk about, if there's any problems or concerns. This takes place in her office, which is located right next to the exam room. After that she stars the breast exam, so usually I undress my shirt and bra, then she does the exam, then I put my bra and shirt back on (most doctors have a room divider) and undress the bottoms. ALWAYS keep my socks on (had a discussion with a few friends about that and most of us keep our socks on because the exam rooms have cold floors). Then there's another step I didn't see in your exam: the doctor puts one or two fingers inside the vagina and presses softly with the other hand from the outside (wearing gloves all the time, of course), don't know how to call it in english, I think we just call it "Tastuntersuchung" and it's not a big deal, really. I've never had a doctor examining me with a lighted speculum, that would be exciting (well, not in THAT way ;) ). Most doctors (or a least the decent ones) have steel speculums in different sizes they keep in a steril, warm drawer. I think the pap smear is done with a classic cotton bud (only a little longer and bigger, but i've never actually paid attention to it). Since almost everyone in Germany has basic healthcare, this is "all-inclusive", at least in my age. There are some additional exams that are standard when we get older, or the vaccination against HPV when we are younger (when I was about the right age for this vaccination it wasn't available so I didn't have it). However there are some additional exams they can do if you're having any problems or if you just *want* to have an ultrasound you can pay 30 Euros for it and you get it. They call it "IGEL" (Individuelle Gesundheitsleistung, Individual Health Service) I thought this was very interesting, first of course for american women who never have had this exam, because it's so important! And second because I like seeing the differences between countries and cultures. Maybe you found that interesting, too. Keep this work going, it's obvious that it's needed since so many women feel so uncomfortable having this exam that could save their life.
You know what is interesting... as a German woman I never had to pay for an ultrasound and I had various. Mostly they were required for checking my symptoms (really late or painful periods). Where I am from you need to pay for a Pregnancy Test though. It costs around 20 Euros if I am not mistaken.
I like the way this doctor said the fingers in the vagina can be unneccessary. I never understood the need for that myself. I applaud his honest answer to that. Respect.
Awesome episode, I could have used something like this as a teen when I was afraid to go even though I was experiencing heavy irregular bleeding. My fear kept me from getting an early diagnosis.
I wish this was on the internet back before I had my first pelvic exam. No one prepared me, no one told me what the doctor would do, and I couldn't relax. Up until recently I've kind of avoided going back, but I think I feel better about the idea of getting acquainted with a regular gynecologist now.
I literally want to go to this Doctor. He is so kind, and I know he is probably being a tiny bit more thorough in explanation for the video, but I have definitely had doctors who were much colder. I dont think I realized how truly uncomfortable it made me until watching this video.
Even watching this gave me bad anxiety ugh, I have such a bad phobia of pelvic exams. It makes me feel a little better that the ACP votes for appointments as needed, because as a sex-disinterested asexual who never plans to have children, hopefully I'll never need to have one.
Fascinating stuff. As a non-vagina-owner, I've had an awareness of pelvic examinations but of course is never known exactly what process female friends have been referring to when they mention one. And it's always fun to see you get off the couch and out into the world with your curious camera crew, too. Nice one.
This is such a useful piece of information, de-mystifying the whole thing. A similar video about colonoscopy would be very useful, too. I had to have one a couple of years ago and really had so little idea what to expect. As it turned out it was quite a surreal experience with very kind and lovely practitioners (I think there were three of them) and we spent most of the time chatting about nail varnish colours in between "...and just turn a little bit to your left...". What had started out as a very daunting prospect became actually a very pleasant experience.
Thank you for this video. I have a lot of anxiety surrounding my first PAP Smear as I haven't had it yet. This eased so much of the anxiety surrounding it for me. Mentally, I know that there isn't anything to really be afraid of. I love my gyno and trust her deeply. But the fear of the unknown (i.e. sensations, pain?) surrounds the pelvic exam for me. Many around me told me it was the most painful thing that they had experienced "down there" besides child-birth. My mother, on the other hand, says about the same as you, Dr. Doe. Little crampy and cold, but other than that, routine. I would assume that those around me who said it was painful beyond belief had underlying issues. All of this to say, thank you for being so open and willing to share your knowledge and experiences with the Internet. Without your channel, I would not be equipped with the knowledge I have today about my body, my sexual health and well being, and honestly -- how to protect myself. Thank you.
@@russellclement2058 I don't think they're talking about the technology or techniques shown here, but rather the fact this appointment was both filmed and then posted to UA-cam.
I'm really glad he talked about the bimanual exam! My regular physician had never done one on me before, but when I had to go to the hospital for a possible cyst complication the doc did once without any explanation! Definitely felt invasive, like Dr. Blake said. Glad I now have clarification on what it is and why it's done!
why do they do pelvic exams for suspected ovarian cysts etc? I think that the practices are just so different between countries because it was never once suggested to me as a teen or adult suffering ovarian cysts to have a pelvic exam and honestly I doubt I would have gone to the doctors to be diagnosed if I knew I would have had to go through a pelvic exam. I was able to be diagnosed through ultrasound which while uncomfortable is not invasive so why all the pelvic exams beyond 2 yearly pap smears (Australian)?
One important point is that in pelvic exams, if the physician is a male there is a female nurse or nurse assistant present during the exam. This is to prevent any inappropriate action by the physician and also to protect the male physician from false allegations by the patient. Those things can and do happen.
@@arkwing_7174 We live in a double standard world my friend. Yes, it should be illegal not to have a Male nurse present but in reality no one cares.

Thank you for everything you do, Dr. Lindsey Doe! This was amazingly informative and easy-going, and I will certainly recommend it to my friends with kids at the age of doing the first exam. Now if only you or someone does the same for *prostate exams*, that will be quite awesome for another demographics.
I watch to be better informed; I have a 11year old daughter. And I hope I am not raising some ones fool, If she has question that her Mother doesn't know the answer to ( there have been some) I want to be able to answer them "if " asked. And on the side, I found myself feeling like I was in the room with you. Not in a creepy way, but like intern Doctors doing rounds. I even turned my head when you were asked to move down to the edge of the table because it looked like you might expose yourself. Must be the "Southern" in Me.
Women do not smile as if they are enjoying the experience. I doubt this woman had anything done to her at all nor do I believe she was naked. It all went way to quickly. A doctor "takes his/her time" on any sexually attractive patient. By not showing the procedures as they really happen, it is more of a disservice than anything. If we are lied to in order to get us to willingly line up for a procedure that goes against common sense, then something criminal is going on. We need to protect ourselves and especially the next generation. Stress from these exams adds to issues at home which add to divorce rates. These doctors are trained to overcome our defenses, not to help us.
Thank you for making this video. I'm 29, and I had never been to a GYN until today. I had been too scared to go, but this video showed me what to expect. In fact, the exam ended up being even easier than Dr. Doe makes it look in this video- I literally didn't feel a thing. Now I know that it's not so bad.
Why? They're really not bad at all, they're usually very fast and there can be minor discomfort but if you've have menstrual cramps and know what that feels like, it's definitely not as bad as that. :)
Exactly. When I heard him say that he doesn't call them stirrups because she's not a horse I thought time for her to find a new gynecologist because this one is a educated idiot.
Chris Aurora you are very well educated person you know your stuff I wouldn’t mind having you as my gynaecologist you explained things very detailed and your honest about what needs to be done and what doesn’t need to be done
I hate anything medical because I'm a ftm (female to male) and it makes me super dysphoric. I went for a physical and I refused to let them look. They were super respectful and just told me to call if I noticed anything amiss. Might be stupid but made me feel a lot better
Aaaah I saw this right AFTER getting an IUD inserted and I wish it had been up twelve hours ago! Luckily I think most ob-gyns are really nice, calm people. It's awesome to see people talk about doctor's visits like this, because I was terrified of getting a pap smear and could find no information about what the insertion would be like except for some women online going, "This will probably hurt." Thanks Lindsey!
Oh man...I thought I could finish the video, but I'm about halfway through and I feel like I'm going to faint. It was from one of these, a pap smear to be precise, that I found out I had vulvar vestibulitis. Granted, I had a terrible OBGYN and she gave me the absolute runaround to finally give me that diagnosis. She treated me very poorly and was upset with me that I was in absolute excruciating agony. Whenever a doctor asks me the last time I've had a pap smear I have to explain that I have this condition and I just can't get it done. I'm honestly terrified of gynecologists now. I don't think I can ever go back to one. I don't know what to do.
J the Lioness I am so sorry you had that experience, I know it's not the same but I am absolutely terrified of dentists (to the point that before my last exam I hadn't been for around 9 years) unsurprisingly I needed considerable work done (2 fillings and a root canal and crown). I found an amazing dentist who did the exam for me using conscious sedation. I don't know if that is an option for pelvic exams, but it's worth exploring that with a care provider you feel comfortable with, don't be scared to interview them, you do not have to go with the first person on your insurance list. Good luck xx
sexplanations J the Lioness I also have vestibulitis and the speculum hurts so much it makes me cry (and I also have lupus and do not cry from pain very often). My gynecologist is always very gentle and will only use a very little speculum with me, but at the ER for abdominal pain they didn't even know what vestibulitis was and insisted on doing a pelvic exam to check for ovarian cysts and do a pap. It's really upsetting that people don't know about these conditions that affect the procedures we can tolerate.
MattieOnUA-camsexplanations Thank you!! I look forward to the video! MattieOnUA-cam Thank you so much for your comment! I actually have a fear of dentists, too, because of all the times I had to have teeth pulled as a kid and, well, their cleaning tools hurt like crazy. I will certainly look around for one who would be able to use sedation; that was very helpful advice! Once I feel I'm ready to look for a new gynecologist, I'll ask about sedation for that, too. I would feel comfortable doing so as I'd make sure to have my husband with me.
bananafish1990 YIKES! I'm very sorry. I wish there was more talk of vestibulitis. Health care professionals should all know what it is and know how to work around it. My gynecologist knew what it was after doing the Q-Tip test, but she still made me go in and get a biopsy before she diagnosed me. She also used the smallest available speculum in that first exam, but it was like driving a knife in. Just agony.
I don't want this to seem creepy, but it probably is. I was thinking that, seeing as porn is so unrealistic, a series done by sexplanations of actual sex, demonstrating realistic, safe methods, hosted somewhere besides youtube would be really useful.
***** That's an interesting idea. educational pornography with professional actors. Aside from being, you know, educational, it could also help with the rampant objectification of women in porn.
1234kalmar I don't know if the idea that Connor is suggesting is non-objectifying porn, because I believe that there are already companies out there attempting to do just that (as well as amateur pornography). I think what is being suggested is recordings of sex without the aim for titillation (though you couldn't really argue with someone getting off to it).
Women are amazing. I have a great appreciation for all women and am amazed at all the invasive things they deal with related to sexual health, and raising a family. So many times I have said to my wife...I am so glad I am not a woman. She is strong, brave, intelligent and beautiful inside and out. I am thankful God created her and privledged to have her as my better half.
She is awesome! She totally reminds me of my sex ed teacher from school. Gets really excited when talking about sex and body parts and such. But you know what hats off to you girl if your information can be helpful. P.s nice to see a woman thats not all hung up and pretty open with life!! Thats is fantastic as well!!
Whenever I heard of the term "stirrups" in reference to this kind of exam, I always imagined some sort of loop, like a saddle stirrup. Why are they called "stirrups" if they're just, as this doctor said, foot holders? Were the original foot holders actually stirrups?
Your doctor was so sweet and really seemed to care about not just your heath but your overall comfort during your visit.
She likes it rough.
99.9% of Doctors are like that Rachel
yeah u r right. I would act absolutely the same when I am being videotaped while doing my job.
He seems nicer than most doctors I've ever gone to, combined
Jimmy Pea wut.
Its absolutely amazing that this exists as a video for women getting their first pelvic exam, I'm sure its helped a lot of people overcome their own anxieties and helps them understand what to expect.
That wasn’t a biannual pelvic exam. Just a Pap smear. Dr Doe missed out on the icky male dr shoving his fingers into her.
Yes it helped me expect what to happen. A lot of discomfort and pain!

Добрый вечер Александр Владимирович здравствуйте от вас😊 Ош❤
The dynamic between your bubbly host-like persona and his "I'm just doing my job" nonchalance is amazing.
Wow you put it the best way possible
They were eye fucking each other, his feigned indifference is blatantly obvious and her accismus was evident from her not blinking, with a dazed stare.
I like the way you talked to your patient, and not doing a bimanual exam as a routine test is wonderful
She is so sweet how could you not just love her.She helps those who worry clear their heads before going to the doc's.
She’s doing a _performance_ for the camera. What you’re seeing on camera is like confusing porn for sex in real life.
Demian Haki Yeah, sorta like when a person watches a movie like The Human Centipede. You don't look at the human body the same way.
Rockapella66 i didn't even know they existed, my doc still has the metal ones (allthough he keeps them in a heated drawer, bless him)
A heated drawer! Sweet.
minion8 My doc has them too, but runs them under warm water for a few seconds before putting the lubricant on. :)
Rockapella66
I was in my late 20's the first time I had a heated speculum used on me. The doc also had socks over the "foot holders" as Dr. Black calls them. It's amazing how much these little things can help .
I wish my doctor had the plastic speculums. He still uses a metal speculum every time he examines me and I always feel so cold when he inserts it.
Wow she’s brave that she’s expressing herself and that she would share this to the public.
She reminds me of Kate McKinnon.
What brave? she didn't show anything.
I don't think he actually did an exam, but I'm sure it is helpful for women to prepare for their first exam.
i had absolutely no idea what happens in these pelvic exams and have been super fearful of when i have to start getting them, but seeing it be so simple/fast/not awkward at all was such a huge relief! thank you lindsey!
Literally watched this (by sheer accident) the NIGHT BEFORE MY PAP. SOOOOOO helpful. I'm not scared anymore. This was great. Thank you Lindsey!!!!
Kelsea O'Reilly Okay, that made me happycry.
sexplanations I honestly have my first PAP on the 27th and have been getting increasingly nervous.
I truly appreciate the work you’re willing to do to make others feel more comfortable🖤🖤🖤
Edit: as a teenage girl I should at some point fairly soon go to a gynecologist.
Feel better about yourself? Is it really necessary to correct something so insignificant to the video?
It's really really amazing that you made this videos for a whole list of reasons but I just wanted to say thank you for helping me with my particular experience ❤
pap smears hurt,,the doc should ask us if we want a pap not just sneak it in along with the pelvic exam ,I refuse pap smears ,they are not necessary
@@kay8698 they’re testing for hpv
@@kay8698 they are though. if my cousin didnt get one, she wouldnt have found out she had cancer. she was only 32.
You are a bold, bold woman, Dr. Doe. I admire your courage, and the sincerity you have to help others be more comfortable with themselves.
Thank you for helping me see that my fears were based on prejudice, not fact, Lindsey!!
amagicbeanbuyer I've always chosen men over women because I feel like they are more gentle because they don't have the parts they are working on. lol
amagicbeanbuyer opposite here : D
When I learnt, that my stately, very, very prude grandma actually goes to a male gynecologist, it blew my mind!
You're an amazing woman Dr. Doe and courageous. You put yourself out there for all to see and learn. You're my hero.
One of the bravest people I've seen online, she's so open with herself in these videos.
I have a lot of anxiety around doctors when I don’t know what is gonna happen so this video was a huge comfort to me. Thank you
At my last appointment I told my doctor I was having pain during sex and they proceeded to tell me it was because of the position I was in.
Come 4 detail
I have been so scared to get a pelvic exam ever since I figured out what they were. This video has taken my preconceived notions and flipped them on their head. Thank you so much, Dr. Doe!
This is so incredibly helpful. I have my first exam coming up in about a month and I have so much anxiety surrounding it. This is really helping me to feel prepared and more comfortable about it.
anxiety can be greatly reduced by going to a female doc
Sweet
I have a female doctor, I’m sexually active, and I still refuse to get a pelvic exam and Pap smear. I also have an Anxiety disorder
The woman that is taking the exam is the livelest UA-camr I ever seen and so interesting and enthusiastic woman I like to watch her video so much! It's amazing! Thanks for the honest reactions!
I'm glad you & the Doc were both accepting enough to pull this video off and educate the people!
What A Prude !
Thanks for informing us on what size thing they use to put up your vag at the Obgyn.
totally unimportant but you have to give kudos hes a really cute doc and a good bed side manner

Now she has to do a video on another scary doctor's visit.......the orthodontist.

As a man i watched this for no other reason than i just love Lindseys open and fun nature. She is as entertaining as she is educational.
I think this video is amazing because I had my first pelvic exam last week and she really helped me prepare.
If the pap smear hurts, its because the doctor uses too much force,, ,tell the doctor to be gentle
It's also really important that they tell you what they're doing as/before they're doing it.
i loved his energy, it was calm and casual but not uninterested, i hope i get a doctor like that when i have to go in for an exam
I agree with you but at the same time, it's different from the average cherry personality of doctors I've been around so it does make me more anxious lol
Dr. Doe: “Bring a friend for support”
Also Dr. Doe: *brings a camera crew*
i had a man the first time and i felt really uncomfortable because he minimized my opinions. i went to a female next appointment and she was super chill and understanding. she answered my questions throughly and made the actual exam a breeze. my point is, an obgyn is not a “one size fits all” match. if you have a bad experience with one that doesn’t mean you’ll have a bad experience with all. definitely get recommendations from those who you trust.
***** It makes me very happy to see people using 'child with a vagina' instead of 'girl' ^_^ you rock! :)
I mean, you know how it is. Not everyone with a penis is a boy, and not everyone with a vagina is a girl.
On the other hand, should we not all have some common words that we all kinda understand even though they don't always fit perfectly into the complexity of greater humanity?
...But horses don't put their feet in stirrups, jockeys do
TwentySixCookies That's what I thought too! The couch is the horse, for goodness sake... LOL
Absolutely, but I don't find anything wrong with calling them footholders either, since they're not actually stirrups.
TwentySixCookies That's an interesting point.
TwentySixCookies, that is exactly what I thought. I knew if I looked someone would have posted it before me. HaHaa! Good one!
oh my lord lol
also i loved that last comment at the end. speculum sizes do differ and often times they default to a smaller or average size since often that is all they need but i myself need a larger one since my cervix is really far back. definitely never be ashamed to ask for a bigger one. it has no correlation for being a "loose" woman.
Ma'am , you are ridiculously good at educating people about this.
It took me years to feel confident enough to have a pelvic exam. I hope your video helps others take the plunge and get theirs done too! Thank you.
This is fantastic thank you Dr doe
I had an ex girlfriend who hated going to the doctor because of a history of bad news in the family health and she had extremely nervous time going when I went with her which was the first time she went in years for a checkup watching videos like this I believe would have calmed her down and make her feel more comfortable great work you are the best
ahhh this came at the absolute perfect time!! i have my first ever pelvic exam on monday and it really helped to see this. i'm still a bit nervous but hopefully everything will go smoothly!
How did it go?
StarsNight123 it went great! i mean, it wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world, but i'd get a pelvic exam done over going to the dentist any day, hah.
homeintheclouds awesome :D
I actually cried during my first exam. I was not prepared for it to be as painful and uncomfortable as it was. :( I do have some health issues though so I'm sure it's less of a burden for people who are healthy. Hopefully next time will be a lot better.....
Finally, our hero Doe is actually participating. When we actually get to see the exams it is for real and actual. Thank you doctor DOE
I give women every where big props having to go through this!
Dr. Doe you are my hero. I was so scared to go do this but now I'm fearless! Thank you!!
A gown and a sheet?
"Pelvic" Exams in Germany are a little different ^^
I've never had to change in something else.
They call it "IGEL" (Individuelle Gesundheitsleistung, Individual Health Service)
I thought this was very interesting, first of course for american women who never have had this exam, because it's so important!
For the most part I really like this doctor: he seems respectful, gentle, and personable.
And cute.
I like the way this doctor said the fingers in the vagina can be unneccessary. I never understood the need for that myself. I applaud his honest answer to that. Respect.
I'm a medical student. Thanks for doing this. For future reference, ACOG is the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists.
Thank you for taking us along to such an intimate/possibly awkward situation.
I literally want to go to this Doctor. He is so kind, and I know he is probably being a tiny bit more thorough in explanation for the video, but I have definitely had doctors who were much colder. I dont think I realized how truly uncomfortable it made me until watching this video.
My first assumed I had it done before and barely walked me through it at all. He did every step preformed and discussed.
Really you want this done by a male family dr.
Fantastic video! I'm going to save this to show my daughter when the time comes. What a super doctor too, he's very professional!
Lindsey, you never cease to amaze me.
Even watching this gave me bad anxiety ugh, I have such a bad phobia of pelvic exams. It makes me feel a little better that the ACP votes for appointments as needed, because as a sex-disinterested asexual who never plans to have children, hopefully I'll never need to have one.
Aceofhearts Same here. I try to watch videos like this to decrease my anxiety.
Same here.
I hate it.
Feel like a rape
the pap smears hurt,,the doc should ask us if we want a pap not just sneak it in along with the pelvic exam
Fascinating stuff. As a non-vagina-owner, I've had an awareness of pelvic examinations but of course is never known exactly what process female friends have been referring to when they mention one.
And it's always fun to see you get off the couch and out into the world with your curious camera crew, too. Nice one.
A non-vagina owner, I like that description of a male.
Thank you.
This is kind of…revolutionary.
JenniferLoveSCREWIT you're right. it's really great
Revolutionary ??? That exact same procedure has been going on for 45 years that I know,,
Yes, yes it is

I don't think they're talking about the technology or techniques shown here, but rather the fact this appointment was both filmed and then posted to UA-cam.
I like your willingness to share what would be intimate moments for most people. And you still manage to keep it fun and lighthearted.
One important point is that in pelvic exams, if the physician is a male there is a female nurse or nurse assistant present during the exam. This is to prevent any inappropriate action by the physician and also to protect the male physician from false allegations by the patient. Those things can and do happen.
William Keith Females can sexually assault too.
That was one of the better exams I have watched. Brave!
This video is exactly what I was looking for. You've done it again, Dr. Doe :)
Early detection of illnesses and diseases is VERY IMPORTANT in successful treatment. Thank you so much for this video , it could save a live.
She is doing a great thing for women by helping inform them about the exam process. She is also gorgeous
This is actually really helpful because I've always been really scared to do this and now its not that bad
You're so brave. I'm always so, so nervous during pelvic exams. Thanks for making this, Dr. Doe!
Must be the "Southern" in Me.
mikenayeli My father took me to my first pelvic exam when I was 15. Fathers, men, brothers, boys, I hope all of us stay curious!
sexplanations My dad took me to my first one too. I thought I was the only one.
+Jayne Myname you have a warped since of logic!

This video helped me prep and to not feel scared of my first pelvic exam. Thank you!
IM SO HAPPY THAT THIS VIDEO EXISTS. I NOW KNOW THAT I NEVER EVER WANT TO GET A PELVIC EXAM. EVER.
Why? They're really not bad at all, they're usually very fast and there can be minor discomfort but if you've have menstrual cramps and know what that feels like, it's definitely not as bad as that. :)
Nagi Noriette that’s horrible in my case tho bc my cramps are severe so I’m screwed. Rip me
You don't need a pelvic exam, u need some downers.

you....this video is so considerate
I would like to mention that on horses, humans are still the ones putting their feet in stirrups.
So informative even for guys watching this. Helps guys develop empathy and understanding for what girls go through.
It's awesome to see people talk about doctor's visits like this, because I was terrified of getting a pap smear and could find no information about what the insertion would be like except for some women online going, "This will probably hurt."
Thanks Lindsey!
J the Lioness We're putting out an episode about how to choose a helping professional which may help. You deserve awesome care!
Just agony.
Dr Doe. You are possibly the best doc ever !!!
What an awesome Dr. to let you record the exam. Hope test results are neg.
I don't want this to seem creepy, but it probably is. I was thinking that, seeing as porn is so unrealistic, a series done by sexplanations of actual sex, demonstrating realistic, safe methods, hosted somewhere besides youtube would be really useful.
***** You just want to see her have sex lol
Thingsandstuff Assuming this were to happen, I would imagine they would hire actors.
***** Damn it.
One of her funniest points was about bringing friends for moral support (even if those friends bring video cameras with them).
Your hair looked really cute in this video. :D
I've tried those pickup lines before as well. They didn't work for me either.
