Colposcopy | What to Expect and Results Explained

  • In this video I explain why someone would get need a Colposcopy, what to expect at the appointment, and what the results mean. Colposcopies are done when someone has an abnormal pap smear to prevent abnormal paps from growing into precancerous cells. If you are getting a Colposcopy, it does not mean that you have cancer, it is just a preventative measure to treat a problem which could potentially become bigger in a few years with no action taken.

I have had this down twice and a leap… it does pinch and is uncomfortable, but quick! And the good news with HPV is that it can go away! I went for my 3rd biopsy, and there was no sign of abnormal cells and hpv! Now my obgyn will just check me on my annual!

Just got home from my first colposcopy. This was my first ever abnormal pap, and hpv diagnosis. I watched this video ahead of time and read the comments, and I had such anxiety over this for weeks now. I almost cancelled my appointment. But I decided not knowing was worse, so I went. LET ME TELL YOU. I felt absolutely nothing. People said the solution would sting. I felt nothing. People said the biopsy was "extremely painful", "torture", "excruciating". I felt nothing. I honestly would not have even known she did either of those things. The only thing I felt was obviously the speculum inside me, exactly like during a pap smear. I was SHAKING LIKE A LEAF and CRYING because of the comments on this video, and the actual procedure felt simply like a speculum inside me. I would argue it was even less uncomfortable than the pap smear, because I always feel the "wand" they use to scrape cells during that, and I felt nothing like that during the colposcopy. I'm not saying I don't believe some women feel pain. But using such dramatic words as these other comments FREAKS PEOPLE OUT and personally I wish I never read them. Also fyi I was told to take 600-800mg of ibuprofen 30 min before. I took 400 because I'm not much of a pill person. It's been an hour and I feel no cramping or anything. All that stress for nothing. Idk what the other commenters think they're doing leaving comments like that.
Comment for the actual channel - this video was super helpful in explaining what to expect and what the different CIN levels mean. Thank you!

Ive had a biopsy of my endometrium 2 years ago. I left obviously the scratching inside. But I wonder how this can compare with cervix. I have tolerance for pain.

I've had two and neither one was painful. The only part of it that was "uncomfortable" was having the speculum in. Felt like it was opened a lot wider than a normal pap smear. My doctor used a numbing spray on my cervix before the biopsy. I wonder if these other women who say it was so painful did not get a numbing spray? I don't know.
I've also had a uterine biopsy years ago and let me tell you, THAT was excruciating. Felt like I was being stabbed with a butcher knife. I literally screamed out loud, and I'm usually pretty good with pain.

First time in my 35 years that I felt so anxious about something. Having my first "Abnormal pap/ hpv diagnosis" was so new to me and scary. Knowing this and needing a Colposcopy to be done was too much for a single month. Thanks to this video I felt a little more prepared and certainly reduced the level of anxiety. The procedure it self it's not painful just uncomfortable and weird specially when they are taking the samples(she took 6). But my doc explained everything beforehand so I had an idea what to expect. Little cramps afterwards not a big deal. Now, I want to thank God for the Medical Assistant that works with my OBGYN she is so amazing and she has no idea how much of a difference she made when she talked to me while preparing the room. God bless her!

To all the women who are nervous about pain and having this done. I had it done today and let me tell you, the videos I watched and the things I read made me have anxiety that was WAY worse than the actual procedure. You feel pressure, no lie there. But I never felt a sharp pain. More like a tugging. The first biopsy I didn’t even feel or know they did it, the second one I felt a little bit. Like a mild period cramp. The worst part of the whole thing is the anxiety and the cramping afterwards but I experienced nothing worse than period cramps that we’re all used to. Don’t freak out, you got this. Just power through.

Some women had to undergo multiple biopsies and depends on the type of biopsy and what part of cervix and whether or not they did numbing before the procedure and of course experience of a doctor plays a major role.

Everyone has a different pain threshold so please don't try to invalidate the pain of others. Ultimately, it is cruel and barbaric to perform gynecological procedures on female patients without anesthesia. Male patients are given anesthesia for both testicular biopsies and prostate biopsies. Women not being given anesthesia for their biopsies is gender discrimination. Ladies, advocate for yourself and demand the same anesthesia and opioid pain medication that male patients are given.

Ladies, make sure to only see a doctor that uses the new Carevix clamp (which uses gentle suction to stabilize the cervix) instead of the traditional tenaculum clamp which has sharp prongs that stab into your cervix, which is not only painful but can cause permanent nerve damage. Some women have even reported losing sensation in their clitoris after undergoing gynecological procedures that use a tenaculum. This is because the nerves in the cervix and the nerves in the clitoris are located on the same map.

I just had mines done TODAY. I watched several videos before going and wanted to share. Before going, i requested an valium. Helps with my anxiety. Also took an 800 ibuprofen before as well. My OB was very nice and explained the whole procedure. It was about 10 minutes, she did take one biopsy sample but she did it so quick. Cramping was minimal. I did a lot of breathing through the mouth. My mom was in the room for moral support and it was so helpful. 10x's less pain than the endometrian biopsy.

Was the lidocaine applied topically to your cervix or did you get the local anesthesia injection? They are two different things. Lidocaine being applied topically isn't going to do anything for the pain of this procedure. You need the anesthesia shot. Although it's recommended to have the lidocaine applied to the cervix before administering the shot to lessen the pain of the shot itself.

It did hurt a bit and I was very scared and nervous and also oddly ashamed for getting an abnormal pap and a hpv diagnosis. Luckily I had the most wonderful doctor and nurse who talked me through it the entire time, keeping me informed and feeling safe and making sure I didn't leave the office feeling bad about the procedure or myself. The nurse didn't let go of my hand the entire time and I think I will remember her kindness for the rest of my life even though it wasn't a major procedure or anything. I recently had a follow up appointment with a normal pap smear and negative hpv test results, meaning that everything is perfectly fine now a year down the road.
So don't be afraid to let your healthcare providers know how you're feeling and make sure they allow you to take your time. It can be a very vulnerable situation and it's okay to go through a lot of emotions during it.

Yesterday I had a colposcopy (a cervical biopsy) done after receiving abnormal Pap smear results. I was told beforehand to not take any herbal supplements, or aspirins as it makes you bleed more. I was not nervous at all as the staff assured me it’s a simple pinch and I'll be back to normal before I know it.
The procedure was anything but a pinch. Between the speculum being adjusted multiple times, to the doctor telling the nurse and PA in front of me that I must’ve had to take herbal supplements less than a week ago because I am bleeding much more than expected, it was extremely uncomfortable and at times painful. If the procedure was only a pinch, why did the nurse hold my hand? He took about 3-4 samples and took a while to stop the bleeding which was very uncomfortable as he switched gauzes quite a few times and worked to cauterize the wound. He sounded stressed as he worked quickly to slow down the bleeding.
After, he tells me to go home and stay off my feet, take it easy as I've just had "major surgery" and that I can’t insert anything until my cervix heals or even exercise. At one point, he even asked me if I drove out of concern! I share my story because I tried so hard to remain stoic and calm while on the table because I was told it’s an "easy and minimally painful procedure", and I left feeling lost, traumatized, confused and ashamed. I remember the doctor even calling out my breathing, again saying that “I must’ve taken something, see how hard she is breathing?” I felt so insulted because I was trying so hard to control my breath to stay calm, while my hands were clenched in a fist. When I walked out of there, I called my partner and I was holding back tears. He said that he can hear it in my voice that I want to cry, and I did want to, but I was holding it in! I felt so lost, like I was being gaslighted about my experience by an entire office of people. Even when I left the office, the receptionist said, "see, I told you it wasn't too bad", but in all honesty, it WAS really bad.
Now that I'm home, I'm reading on Reddit & Tik Tok of so many painful experiences of a colposcopy, and how women are often times not given pain management and at times can be deceived about the pain and the experience. While this is not everyone’s experience, it’s common enough to find content of women being emotional and even angry about this- I have never felt more seen. Others called this procedure "barbaric" as it's often offered without pain management and it can be traumatizing 🤯
I wish I did more research to ask for more options for pain management during the procedure, but also even after which has also been painful. All they told me was to take a Tylenol, I will be fine. I wish I did advocate more for myself, and was given the option to have emotional support through this. I was reading that there are local anesthesia options available, but most OB-GYN's do not inform you of it. For a very long time, and still till this day, women's health, pains and concerns are often underestimated, or minimized.

Thank you for sharing your story. I recently had this done and did research afterwards bc I felt the effects of the procedure were not shared proactively. I too, felt very uncomfortable and very dull crampy pain during and after this procedure. The doctor was kind and told me I could have them stop at any time but they had to collect 3 samples. I took the next few days to rest but 1week later I'm still dealing with the weird discharge. Hopefully your results came back favorable and I hope the same for mine. I'm just surprised many women aren't familiar with this so just like me didn't know to advocate for pain management.

I’ve had two colposcopies one about 15 yrs ago and one a couple months ago. My first one I didn’t know what to expect. It seemed like a long procedure as I think doctor was not that experienced or confident so to speak and therefore took longer and was a bit painful. For my second one I knew what to expect and was very scared. She explained the procedure to me and reassured me she’d be quick and it would not hurt. I can say, it was quick it was a slight discomfort but no pain , and I had no cramping afterwards like the first one. Even the biopsy ( which I was scared of the most ) I didn’t even feel. The only discomfort came from the light stinging sensation when they run the vinegar solution on your cervix, but that too was mild. I would say be informed before you go in, make sure you have a good and confident doctor. Humor throughout makes it much easier as well.

I just had my first colposcopy and it was pretty easy! My OBGYN let me ask questions beforehand so that helped. She used a brush to get samples (vs cutting a chunk out of my uterus) so I feel like that played a roll in how easy it was for me. The only notable things for me was just general pressure and a little stinginess. I had some fidget toys to play with during the procedure which helped keep me distracted, and I took deep breaths as well.

I just got my colposcopy and i must say it just feels like you have your period after they take the biopsy. you will also feel pressure of the doctor pushing on your pelvis with the tool. I was tearing up because the pressure was uncomfortable. But it’s better than waiting and allowing time to go by and it gets worse. The only thing i must say is bring a pad because you will be bleeding.

Had mine done today. Only uncomfortable part was when they open the end of the cervix to insert the wand to get at those interior cells. Didn’t feel a thing with the vinegar or the four biopsies. Minimal spotting afterwards. Back to normal within the hour

I my quiz the results. I understand the CIN 1,2,3 but is there any other possible result? Can there be an actual cancer result? Or only the CIN? What if it already turned to cancer? Can the Colposcopy show that or is there a different test? I have had CIN 3 before and had a leepconization. I had different HPV now like 10 years later after having normal paps in between. This time it was not the same high risk HPV so they didn’t do anything except wait to check pap again in a year. Im At that point now and waiting in my pap results. Dr said if it is positive again I’ll have to go for another colonoscopy. Not sure what to think since i already had Leep and Cone before. Can they do that again or is a historectomy possibility? So nervous to have this again! Thanks

Male patients are given anesthesia for testicular biopsies and prostate biopsies. If you were not given anesthesia for a gynecological biopsy, I would sue for gender discrimination. You can ask a lawyer what your options are. A lot of lawyers offer a free consultation and they don't charge the client unless they win the case.

I had a colposcopy last week where the doctor did not take a biopsy nor a sample from the cervical opening. The procedure was up on a monitor so I could see what the doctor could see and there was sn area that was white. I asked if the doctor was going to take a biopsy of the white area and he said no, as he didn't think it was of concern and thought it might clear up on its own. I am 49 and was just diagnosed with high risk HPV. My pap came back abnormal which is why I was sent for a colposcopy. I find it odd the doctor chose not to take a biopsy of the white area. I am scheduled to go back in 6 months for a pap using the colposcope - I told the doctor I would feel better if when he did the pap, he also used the colposcope. I suppose doctors opinons vary as to whether or not to take a biopsy during a colposcopy, but I thought that was the point of the procedure. Given there was an area that turned white, I now question his decision. The doctor in this video states biopsy is taken even if there are no white areas. The pap came back abnormal, so I would think we'd want to know what was going on, even if nothing turned white. I am now considering getting a second opinion.

@@Pipp08 I just had a colposcopy where the dr took 5 biopsies. This was my 3rd colposcopy in 3 years. I recently learned I have HPV45. It’s a high risk strain responsible for about 10% of cervical cancers. Btw, I find biopsies hurt a great deal. I wish I only felt a pinch. I have a new dr who provides shots to address the pain. The shots hurt, but not as bad as the biopsies.

I had it done recently. I was very nervous but my doctor was very gentle and quick. The biopsy part (i had two btw) was not so bad more like a quick pinch but tolerable. It wasn't until my cervix was scraped that i felt pain like a quick sharp pain 8/10 but she was quick about it. The vinegar did not really sting. Personally for me the last part was the main thing that hurt. Everything else was fine.

I've had a similar experience like Brianna. Had the appointment today and was freaking out for 2 weeks about it- including not leaving my house and crying for the past 5 days straight. I've massive anxiety when it comes to all things medical and the sole thought of it made me physically sick. I've had a lovely doctor and 2 nurses attending to me. I almost started crying in the conversation you have beforehand, I was shaking and panicking sooo bad. So now to the colposcopy. Laying down with your legs spread and pushing your fanny in someone else's face is never a pleasent moment but it was FAR from the terror I was expecting. The speculum is a bit uncomfortable but I felt nothing of the preparing or the dye. When the doctor said they'd need to take 2 biopsies and would numb the area I was like "What?! WITH A NEEDLE?" I've plenty of tattoos but injections just give me the creeps but I swear to god I didn't feel ANYTHING. I was waiting for the pain and the nurse just said "look you're very good it's done already." I was super surprised. Obviously I didn't feel the biopsies then. The whole process didn't take longer than 5,6 minutes. I've taken some paracetamol beforehand and got slight cramps about 2 hours after but nothing as bad as I expected. Again, similar to Brianna I'm not saying that some woman overexaggerating their pain I think they do feel it but to describe it with excruciating and torturous just pushes the anxiety of already nervous woman to an unbearable extent so commenting more mindful would help. I was expecting pure hell after what I've read online. Ladies, it is definitely manageable, you've got this and your health is definitely worth it. Bring a loved one and treat yourself afterwards and definitely tell your doctor or nurse how you feel its very important. 👍🏻

Not such a bad experience- it felt like a regular Pap smear except for the cramping minute where they push your pelvis. If I had focused on why was being done and didn’t relax my muscles I strongly believe that I would’ve felt the pain a lot more. With that said, walk in relaxed and try not talking when the doctor asks you any questions- talking at the moment of, may stress you since you’re using strength... I did feel the swabbing but it was nothing crazy. Again, just RELAX.

Brianna Eason's comment on here put my mind at rest tremendously and I have had an experience of my own in the uk with the good old NHS I am truly grateful for. I had received my letter informing me my cells were 'high grade' and that I would need a further inspection ( as standard procedure ) and I was glad I took a look at this video which was helpful as well as a balanced view when reading comments. I got a phone call the same afternoon as receiving my letter by pure coincidence and was asked to go in the next day which did worry me due to expecting it to be somewhat delayed due to covid etc and it got my mind thinking perhaps the level of 'severe high grade' may be more to worry about with the speed at which I was booked in for an appointment.
I went in as calmly as I could and a 45 min wait wasn't a brilliant aid in staying calm prior to going in, however I did have time to gauge the other women's responses coming and going from their colposcopys. I saw some were calm and some weeping. I literally didn't have a clue what to expect and at that point had an awareness that this must come down to everyone having different pain thresholds and/or what I was witnessing could be the upset women had surgery and the others had not. I decided to just embrace this scenario and focus on the fact that should there be discomfort or pain- I would have to suck it up and get on with it as at the end of the day this is not a punishment, it is circumstantial and the sooner it is addressed the more likely I am to be healthy regardless of outcome. Please. Focus on this aspect as it is a gift that there is the option to have this treatment.
I had to have the surgery and I was fine. Really fine. I prefer to know every gory detail of what is going on as that is just how my mind works. Everything was explained to me without me being patronised and it helped. It begins similar to a normal smear test except you are sat on an oversized sanitary pad with your legs in caliper things and overall it is a very vulnerable feeling. I also had a lovely male doctor who was very professional, with a nurse in the room as well. I was offered the option to have a person with me in the room if i wanted but I was fine with the nurse. It was an option to come back another day to have the operation or have it there and then when they took a look and I urge you to just get it done and over with because surely you will just worry much more if you have a week etc before you go back for it.
The speculum is inserted and if you mentally prepare for it you can relax a bit more- you feel like you are being gripped firmly by a fist- it is pressure rather than pain etc and you are in this scenario for a while whilst they look at you. They changed the speculum to a different one when i had agreed to have the surgery and this was to keep me in place more precisely and avoid the doctor's implements touching any other parts of my cervix or walls that were healthy- trust me you want this grip keeping you in place as they numb that area specifically.
The needle was large but that is only because of its destination- think about it- a small one would mean someones arm going inside you wouldn't it ;D So if you stay still and breathe this is barely noticeable. Sure you feel the slightest prick but then it is numb. You feel the sensation of being full in an acute way as the anaesthetic is going in but then after a few minutes it kicks in. The surgery is quick and accurate. They take a looped device that does not look threatening at all- more like the size of a toothbrush handle that they use to further keep you in place and then after ensuring you are ready etc they get to work.
Think of it as a kind of MOT for your insides- what is in there is not helping you. You will see them remove ugly looking bits of bloody flesh from you but only what is necessary and you do not have to look- this is just the reality of what is happening. I felt nothing painful like cutting or slicing or anything horrific like that. I was truly grateful I was numb. You don't see what is coming or going unless like me you specifically want to know what is going on- unless you look- I didn't have a tv screen as the monitor was not working. I don;t think it would have been of benefit to me to be honest.
They cortorise the bleeding as obviously your insides will be offended to say the least that this unexpected thing is taking place and reacting at being cut accordingly. But you do not feel anything. This looks like a little pen with a lid on- it is the same thing they use more or less when they stop nosebleeds-it is a flat end and I thought of it when I saw it much alike a plug in cigarette lighter- the ones that are electronic- not like a stove top ring lighting up- again this is very small.
It looked very similar overall to how they deal with your teeth when you have a filling at the dentist - when they put something in to seal the paste and you have the dental nurse holding a mini hoover type device to suck up your spit- this was the same sort of thing- as they operated, there was a removal process for blood in this case. It is not very exciting or entertaining at the time but it is simple, quick, straight forward. THe estimation of how long your appointment will be is going to include the doctor speaking to you, explaining, offering you surgery there and then should you need it and gauging how you are feeling/nerves etc. Where to get undressed/going through paperwork to know basics and if you are pregnant/health issues/other medication.
Obviously you don't walk in, get your legs whipped up and ignored whilst they do what you assume is torture and then send you on your way lol. So remember a lot of that time estimated is the before and after and ensuring you are ok. Once it was done I was not sure whether to expect a lot of bleeding or not when I stood up, having been in a laid back position for a while but i just got instructed kindly where to get dressed, given a leaflet and some detailed explanations about putting nothing inside me for about a month so I heal and avoid risk of infection - so no tampons, no sex, no baths etc for a month. They provided sanitary towels and I literally felt fine. I got dressed and went home. I barely had any discomfort, for me I was just trying to mentally process it all in order to try and alleviate others' concern with the procedure when it came to writing this.
My thoughts overall are that you should consider what your response to anaesthetic is like- maybe those who are in a lot of pain needed more as there are some horror stories in the comments. Whilst I do have a high pain threshold, I am lucky that usual dosages tend to numb me at the dentist etc and the same occurred here. I am not a medical professional but perhaps asking if they can stop and have more- discuss this before you agree to surgery if you have it. Ask , ask, ask..tell them what you are scared of. It is their job to make it pain free and help you-remember this is not someone torturing you, they are trying to help you and in some cases may save your life.
I now have to wait and see what results are and go back in 6 months for another smear test to see how the cells are doing. It has been a week now and my body has healed nicely. It has been like a very light period. I have not been too active excersizing wise as recommended and i have tried to rest my body and mind as and when i felt necessary. I recommend the surgery if you need to have it and if not just expect to feel like someone is firmly gripping your insides in order to get a closer look at you, for your own benefit. It is a pressure feeling nothing more than that.
Final thoughts are that consider some of the sex you have had- it crossed my mind that if you are less used to rough and ready intercourse etc you might be more sensitive to the abrupt no nonsense approach this will feel like. Hopefully I am conveying what I mean right lol - If the only time you have sex it is usually gentle/relaxed and you are not used to be pounded , shall we say, maybe this is more traumatic.
Do not worry..you will be fine regardless of the experience of the colposcopy- focus on the benefit of it all and your health and if you have fear of needles/are really scared in general- plan yourself a reward in advance etc...plan ahead to be proud of yourself. You can do this x much love to you all x

ALL women should be given powerful analgesics beforehand. Further proof of the health service's love of inflicting agony on us women - mammograms are painful and yet the medical profession knows very well that there is another diagnostic test for breast cancer which is completely painless and risk free - thermography. Yet every time breast cancer screening is mentioned on radio, TV, newspapers, magazines - it is ALWAYS the mammogram. We women have to take matters into our own hands and ignore the common pathetic lying claims of "mild discomfort". ALWAYS take our paracetamols/aspirins.

I think without the anesthesia it would be painful... Just ask your doctor to give you local/topical spray. With the spray I felt something like fast pulling and that was all. It is just a second. @@tonekawilliamson4750 hey, yes the spray helped. I felt nothing like pain, just pulling. But the doctor used a lot of spray and he waited for it to start to work... A few seconds I guess. Just ask your doctor for spray because not everyone use it. It will be over in a few minutes... Sounds scarier than it is. Don't look at the instruments... I talked to the doctor all the time and he was asking me questions just to distract me. Good luck 💙

I find if I think about something relaxing it helps me get through procedures. Also wear headphones because the brain associates sensations with sounds and it's less likely to anticipate and feel pain.

Hi everyone! I had soo much anxiety before my colposcopy I even had my mom come into town to be with me and would cry when thinking about having to go. It was SO easy, like a vag spa lol. Just kidding but really I felt mild cramping right after they took two biopsies and was in and out in less than 20 min. I haven’t taken any Advil and overall had a great experience and I feel fine! The whole thing was easy peasy, don’t stress you got this!
