Shame you didn't show the process of taking it apart. I got one of these, but can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the CD-rom drive bay. This is such a weird case.

Ok, so you do have the same exact 490 setup as I do. Dual X5355 and 32gb ram. I'm in the process of downgrading it. I just got 2 E5345 processors for $10 total. I'm going to put those in because it should drop my CPU heat by about 1/3 and only slightly affect my performance. I'll also get to see how much my RAM comes into play with the heat. The 490 is the best way of turning electricity into heat that I've ever found.

lol, and there is no real way to throttle them fans down in BIOS (except for using speed fan software)... Hey, if you live in a Northern state its a cheap space heater lol... I honestly think the fans are the problem in the 490, because they running at full throttle even when the cpu is idling. It will be interesting to see your results.

I live in Texas and it was maybe 80 the other day. The 490s also have a habit of suddenly deciding "Thermal Solution Compromised!" and then get ready for takeoff. Tomorrow I will probably install them. I'll do some temperature readings before and after. I had added 2 fans to the spots on the back that stick out for fans. On a side note, we're deploying a few T7910s at work. Dual 18 core Xeons with hyperthreading for a total of 72 logical processors. 512GB RAM, 24GB Quadro M6000 video card. 136Fps in cinebench, and the cpu score was nearly 5000. I would like something that takes the 55/56 series xeons so I run Hyper-v in Windows 10 / Server 2016.

The Dell 490 was the first workstation I picked up, then I moved up to the Dell T7500's which run x5650's and x5670's. My R610 server has the E5540's.. The thing I like about the T7500, R610 era is its all on the LGA1366 socket and the ram is compatible making things pretty interchangeable. Those Dell T7910's, I really wouldn't know what to do with that much horsepower except watch alot of porn in 4k lol

Ok results from my cpu swap: Cinebench X5355 - FPS 36.76, CPU - 412. E5345 FPS 36.82, CPU - 419. X5355 highest core temp 93C, E5345 79C. So both my scores increased slightly and my temp went down by 14C peak. My idle power usage went from 305W to 228W and peak wattage went from just under 500W to 378W. My room does seem warm still, but the power consumption and benchmarks seem to show no downside to this swap.

Less wattage is good, no performance drop is good... question is: Are the fans preparing for takeoff?

What's the VRAM of your video card? The GT 630? Also, how much does the precision 490 support at max?

According to Dell, possible memory failure or power supply failure... my guess is the power supply. www.manualslib.com/manual/506628/Dell-Precision-490-Desktop.html?page=142

first thanks for your fast reply
but it work normally if i let it rest could it has cooling issue
or something need to be replaced !

If your having to let your computer "rest", then that is why I think the power supply might be on the way out. But if you think it might be a heat issue, go to google, and download a free program called speccy and see what your temps are... if your cpu or ram is getting too hot, then that could cause a crash too.

which cpu socket is missing? 0 or 1? if its booting from socket 0, then reseat the other cpu to see if that could fix it... if its booting from socket 1, then the board might be bad.. My 490 died on me and wasn't worth my time to work on, so I upgraded.. also make sure the cpus match, if they aren't identical it won't detect (example X51xx or E51xx)

Hey thinking about buying one of these can they support newer GPUS? Like radeon 560s?

I'd look at the Dell T5500's or T7500's... My 490's motherboard has died, and now i got two T7500's.

My Dell 490 motherboard was dead too after 5 years of use but I bring the same Dell 490 barebone from the local store at a cheap price. I'm looking to get Dell T1600 any idea about it?
