Some truly spectacular ships running the gamut of old to new(ish). Pretty crazy to imagine these things on the high-seas, would have been quite the adventure I'm sure! 😊 🚢
As a Native San Diegan (now living in Texas), I have only been on the Star of India once (probably at the same age as your son). Your video has inspired me to visit the Star on my next visit to San Diego. Thanks again for another great video, San Diego Steve!
We are so lucky to have these ships here. I'd been on the Star of India several times as a kid, but I visited most recently for a private "Pirate" theme party in October of 2019. It was great to have the chance to wander around both it and the Surprise at night, and really soak up the feel of the old sailing ship days. During Festival of Sail, you can go aboard the visiting ships, which is also great. I missed it this year, but Star of India does go out (usually towed out to open sea), and I'm determined to get tickets for the next time. Maybe I'll see you there, Steve!
Wow, Just talking about the museum recently, thanks for the all the updates. I realize it has been quite a few years since my last visit, lots of changes. We went in the Soviet sub, quite claustrophobic. Too bad it can't be seen anymore. Nice to know that there is a new sub to tour though. I love the movie "Master and Commander." Seeing the "Surprise" was such a highlight of the visit, and costumes from the movie on display too. Thanks for the tour.
Medea isn't at all mentioned. She was built at a record pace with construction taking about 50 days. Since her launch in 1904 that record has yet to be broken. Being 1 of 4 remaining steam yachts in the world of her type, others including Ena in Australia and Cangarda to mention a few, Medea is the only ship that has actively served in both World Wars.
When my daughter was between 10-12 years old, we used to go every month, imagine that 😁 the las time we where there it was just before I started using crutches, we went inside the Russian Submarine, I'm a claustrophobic but been inside the Submarine, it was different, I live in Vista, about 40 minutes to one hour north of San Diego, so that's why we went very often, make a video of Seaport Village, just steps south of there, it is beautiful and if you can, go to the USS Midway Museum, I couldn't get in because I use a walker (I have Rheumatoid Artritis) it's very impressive. Love your videos 👏👏💕👍👍
I have sailed on the Star of India back when they used to take her out on the open waters. That was one of the best days of my life. My sister got married abord the Star of India 3 years ago.
The san al ador galleon was builded in pa ific coast of the republic of el salvador at central america from there comes out to san diego with soldiers and other galleons
Nice. I did a drive-by in '14 during ComiCon (a couple of Wows!!) then went out to the Point for a walk-thru of that exhibit. And I'm guessing the burned Aircraft Carrier was moved?
The aircraft carrier is the Midway and its down the street a little bit. It isn't part of the museum but would make a good double shot tour for certain.
"HMS" Surprise was originally built in the 1950's (I believe) as "HMS" Rose & was docked as a tourist attraction in Bridgeport, CT, up until the early 2000's. "HMS" is in parenthesis as the ship never actually served in the Royal Navy, thus proper Protocol (per some other Ship Nerds I have interacted with lol). As "HMS" Rose, it was not doing well as a tourist attraction, mainly as it was all by itself, not part of a larger "museum" (I don't know why they didn't move it to Mystic Seaport?), & was in need of repair, so it was sold to the Hollywood movie studio's in the early 2000's for "conversion" to "HMS" Surprise for the M&C movie - technically in the Aubrey novels HMS Surprise was a 28 gun 5th rate, but that's a Ship Nerd detail to Quibble over. The REAL historic HMS Rose the replica was originally based upon was a Royal Navy 24 gun 6th rate Frigate (smallest of it's type) which was employed by the Brit's to hunt down & harass all the bootleggers / smugglers in the years leading up to the Revolutionary War in the lower New England area (mainly Long Island Sound), she had gained quite a Notorious reputation amongst the New England "merchants" of the early 1770's lol.
Too bad about the Soviet sub. It was really cool to walk around in there before it started falling apart. Plus the way they positioned it in relation to it's Cold War adversary, the Midway was fun in a history nerd kind of way.
My GAWD! You make me feel so OLD! First visit to the Star of India was way back when she was the ONLY ship there! Since she was right next to a very popular seafood restaurant, many folk thought she was a part of it! The only other ships in the area were visiting ships tied up to either the Navy or Broadway Piers. One of my earliest memories is of a visiting USS Nautilus, parked where the Midway is now, BEFORE she made that little jaunt up North. I was kind of depressed to find out that the ferry was imported from San Francisco. More than once, visited Coronado when you either took the ferry (every 15 minutes) or drove through Imperial Beach. There was NO bridge! Those days seem like yesterday. I love having reminders coming from things you DON'T show!
Yes we have. Its great too. We were last there in 2018 I think, and something I thought was really great is they had World War 2 vets there to talk with people and answer questions.
The restaurant was/is Anthony's Seafood Grotto. (also Star of the Sea Room) Been a long time since I was there. Some of the best fish & chips I ever had.,
Just down the street is the USS Midway aircraft carrier located at the navy pier. It's a great ship to tour and should be included in you visit to the Maritime museum.
I was onboard "The Star of India" in 1963. I found a photo of me at the wheel !!
Some truly spectacular ships running the gamut of old to new(ish). Pretty crazy to imagine these things on the high-seas, would have been quite the adventure I'm sure! 😊 🚢
Yes, I can only imagine how much these old ships would have rocked in the open ocean too.
I love these old boats, so much character. The old vessels are so majestic!
Very Cool, I’ll add it to my list of things to see in California! 😎
Amazing place look very beautiful Maritime museum 🖼️🖼️🖼️🖼️
Thank you so much for great sharing my friend greatting from Macau china
Many thanks!
Groan!!! (Good knot double entendres). Thanks for the great entertainment! See you next week!

Yes, seeing the Surprise was so cool. I was just talking about the movie recently too as my wife has not seen it yet.
Wonderful job! Thank you for documenting your visit with this video!
Our pleasure. Can't wait to go back.
Really wide diversity of ships there which makes it pretty interesting in my book! Very cool place!
We had no idea going in what was there (aside from the Star of India and the Berkley), so the diversity really surprised us.
Wow, the museum has really grown since I was last there! Thanks for another great video ☺️
Looks like your channel is really taking off now. Congrats.
Getting some wind in the sails! 🌬
Awesome video as always. Unforgettable memories from when I lived in Ocean Beach from 1978 to 1983. Thank you. Greetings from Florida.
That was great. 5th grade camp we toured old towne, the mission and the star of India. I miss SD.
I remember going on the Star of India in the early 1960’s. It smelled of the sea and was a wonder to a desert rat little kid.
One of the best museums. Thanks.
It really is! Kicking myself for not visiting sooner.
@@SidetrackAdventuresHave you gone to the railroad museum in Campo? There's a military museum too.
I went there a long time ago.. I'd recommend it to anyone!! It does feel like a time portal.
Thank for your videos. They are always informative
Glad you like them!
Wow! Somehow the name “Maritime Museum” isn’t enough to describe this ha. Love your perfectly timed … pun! #TieTheKnot 🤣
Thanks, I couldn't resist!

Thank you.
Great videography and editing..I'm Jealous LOL I like that you keep your shots long enough so the viewer can process what's happening..
Thank you. I really appreciate the kind words.
Amazing

Its too bad we cant go in the Russian sub anymore, would have been interesting to compare the US versus the Russian.
@@SidetrackAdventures it was very interesting and that day we had a guy who was telling us all about it
I have sailed on the Star of India back when they used to take her out on the open waters. That was one of the best days of my life. My sister got married abord the Star of India 3 years ago.
That's a really cool and unique place to have a wedding.

Yeah, would have liked to go in, but from the decay on the outside I can see why its going away.
Is rum allowed on board and can I bring my own 🤔

Yes we have. Its great too. We were last there in 2018 I think, and something I thought was really great is they had World War 2 vets there to talk with people and answer questions.
In 5th grade, i went here for a field trip and we spent the night on the ships. I was terrified bc I'm scared of ships and the water
If you have not already done so, you should go south about a mile from the Star of India and check out the Midway Museum.
We have been there, but not since probably 2018 or so. Plan on going back soon.
I remember the Star of India we used to go eat at a restaurant right by it , but I dont remember a museum or those other vessels .

Yes, it's gone. There is a Brigatine next door, but is not the same!
Haven't been there in a long time. Does anyone if Anthony's is still there. Heard it closed and reopened.
It's not there anymore.
😀
