El Galeón
Step back in time aboard El Galeón, the breathtaking 1/1 scale reconstruction of a 16th Century Spanish galleon, while she calls St Augustine, Florida her home port until July 2014. Spanish Galleons, used primarily for their cargo transporting abilities, were frequently bought and sold by Spanish and English governments during the 1600s, and often taken over and converted into Pirate ships in the rough Carribean sea waters.

The best sound is a ships back and fourth creeking
i thought that i am the only one who loves to hear the sound of ships back and fourth creeking🤣
They’re all sound effects added to the vid. You can hear ocean wave sound effects in the vid too 😂
Makes me dizzy
In this case its a sound effect, but youre right
Anyone have just the sound of that without any overlay? It would make a great background sound.
why do ships from the 1700's look better than the new ships
Because nowadays builders are smart enough to not make such vastly impractical ships. It shouldn't take 24 days to cross the Atlantic. I agree though, i like that adventurous look more than some billionaire businessman style ships.
Because now we understand fluid dynamics and don't build floating castles, but ships that can travel distances a hundred times faster.
@@bashkillszombies I'd say that's much more due to more resources and the invention of steam, then coal, and now oil powered propulsion. Don't underestimate the intelligence or inventiveness of people in the past.
Because all the wood used had to be fitted and formed neatly together so it would float now it's all fiber glass they spread or mold over a pieced together frame. It takes a lot less time the end result is an ugly fiberglass bass boat.or a welded metal bucket.
@@bashkillszombies Your totally wrong.... Look at Viking ships, now imagine a 2000 horse power engine on the back of it. That would be one fast sea craft. It's the invention of engines and the welding gun plus fiberglass.
That girl explains everything very nice, you can say she is interested and knows what she is saying. Great job!
That creaking noise is beautiful
It's sound effects
@@yawningdog9894 I've played so much Sea of Thieves that I too think it automatically as sound effect. No idea what is truth tho.
@@yawningdog9894 those aren’t sound effects that’s the creaking of a real wooden ship. It makes that noise when it’s bobbing up and down in the water like that.

I've played Sea of Thieves for years, and I still boggles my mind how they built such immaculate ships 500+ years ago
Well, people weren't stupid back then and less distracted. They achieved great things with the technology and ressources that were available/discovered.
Sure, most had a lack of good education and had to put much effort into basic requirements of life, but those who had the means to study, they must've been well focused.
Oh god. The incells are in the comment section.
Plus they had a lot more time in their hands then too

I'm sorry it's a ship not a boat.
It’s a ship
I have to agree with the other replys, it is a ship, but like, fuck ya I'd do the same
It's nice only if you have a crew/friends who knows every job it needs to sail the ship.
You will need a crew to man the vessel if you are to ever leave whatever port it is build in those things are very hard to sail.
i love this wooden ships ever since of the pirates of the Caribbean movies.

The craftsmanship put into these boats and other developments of this the past are so breathtaking…it’s been making me think lately at how much our imaginations have decreased due to technology and makes me wonder how many more things would be created today if we weren’t so mentally hijacked with our phones.

I'm writing novel about a girl who falls in love with a pirate, so this kind of video is absolutely perfect! Makes it so much easier to write and describe the ship when there's a tour like this
Let us know when it's completed. I'd be interested to check it out. I'm also writing for my own pirate character and find videos like these really inspirational
man im so facinated by old ships... such a rich hostory from 1500 to 1800 to even today... amazing... im like a little kid when it comes to pirate ships and huge war ships
This is the most amazing thing I've seen in a long while. I love wooden motor-less tall ships so much, and the reconstructed historical sailing vessels are just fantastic and breathtaking to look at (and sail on) :)
I was in a caravel long ago... these ships are literally a time traveling machine when you board them...
They definitely have a motor and modern technology.
Otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to sail with it.
More impressive than the ship itself was the volunteers extensive knowledge of not just the ship she was on but also other historic facts.
By far... This is the best old sail ship tour.
Been watching from time to time for years now.

51.5K subscribers Pirate ships are awesome. I'm from Iowa and just so you know, I have never before visited a Pirate ship floating museum. However in 2016, my family and I drove to Bostan, Massachusetts for the very first time. We did get to see and actually visit the USS Constitution Museum itself. However, at the time, we were unable to board the USS Constitution herself, due to her being worked on at the time, much to my families great disappointment. Luckily.... they had another museum ship that was indeed open... was the USS Cassin Young (DD-793), a Fletcher-class destroyer that served during World War 2. I've always loved World War 2 warships, especially destroyers.
Thanks for making this video Matt. It's incredible to see this thing up close like this.
This woman knows her stuff and is so lovely. What an amazing adventure!
I started watching one piece and now I'm here, admiring old ships 🚢
You should watch Pirates of the carribbean if you want to see real ships. But one piece is more enjoyable
Love the sound of wood squeaking.
What a stunning ship! Such craftsmanship and care to detail! Truly amazing! I would of loved to sailed upon one of these!
That galleon looks so majestic and Intimidating at the same time. Amazing.
I was on the El Galeon just this morning and it's a gorgeous ship!
The new sea of thieves update is looking amazing
Wow, fascinating!!! I'd love to tour that ship. As an American, I couldn't crew on her when she is underway, and that is something I completely agree with. This glorious lady is Spanish and her sailing crew should, by all rights, be of Spanish blood. I tip my hat to you, the sailors and support framework of El Galeon. Ahoy!!!!! :)
she didn’t say of blood, dumbass.
Who cares what nationality you are it’s a god damn ship lmao
I absolutely love the look of these old ships. Just look mean and sturdy. Built for war!
Those ships made Europe the ruler of the World
Le DiceThrower That and gunpowder, they had ships before the 1400s, but they only fought by ramming and boarding each other. But when the Portuguese had the idea of installing cannons on their ships, thats when they got the advantage.
The first battle where cannons where used on ships was the Battle of Arnemuiden (1338). The English were the first to use them, not the portuguese.
That's not true.
There are accounts but not verified by governments of others using cannons before the hundred years war.
What makes the Battle Arnemuiden first is because it is properly recorded.
@Tim Dev Made Spain the ruler of the world and lords of seas, no wonder why they were able to take so many nations in America, Europe, Africa and Asia and became the first global empire in human history

Stunning!!!
just FYI it wasn't a "pirate ship". It was a Spanish merchant/ exploration vessel. Built by the Nao Victoria foundation. I would reword your description. Most real pirate ships were NOT galleons but actual sloops and schooners (which were light & made for speed) Galleons were not. Although extremely majestic and beautiful, because of their size, they WERE used to transport extremely large treasure laden cargo.

Great tour, thanks dude, . Yea what a beast.
Magnificent looking ship!
Curious fact, Spanish galleons towers were higher than the british because they used to attack the sails so that makes the canons hit easier the masts and the sails. Of course in a war galleon, that one is a merchant so is not made to fight, the canons are for self protection.
This is amazing!
Johnny B Yeah its a thing to behold for sure!
It's nice to go on sailing, vacation and adventure with this beauty.
Amazing boat! What a beauty! The Spanish girl guide is gorgeous as well 👍🏻
Woman: '150 people on board'
Me: an intellectual who knows you can only have 4 on a galleon, 3 on a brigantine and 2 on a sloop
She meant back then !
Galleons were mostly used as merchants but they could also be used as ship of the line if needed, also Spanish Galleons were worlds bigger than this cute ship, they had 2-3 decks normally. A good example of a Spanish Galleon would be the San Felipe (Saint Philip) or the Santisíma Trinidad (Holy Trinity)
Thanks for sharing Matt...
That Was So AWESOME!!!
I bet someday it will be “in vogue” for rich people to build/buy these type of ships again instead of the boring yachts we see nowadays. That would be the epitome of cool.
I could see it being a hybrid to have the aesthetics, but still the modern abilities of a modern sailing ship and also be able to be run with less crew.
@@RobKohr for sure, on the i side has to be some what modern like yachts do ! But you can’t beat back then craftsmanship of these ships !

I saw them leave St. Augustine around 3 or 4 years ago. It was really cool. It's so slow compared to ships now days. Amazing.
But the craftsmanship and strength is arguably better then today !
If you steal the ship you can sail under any flag and you will be labeled a privateer not a pirate. You may even become governor of Jamaica.
Is this some in joke lost on me? It just sounds like you don't know what sailing under a flag means, nor what a privateer means. You can only sail under a flag you're registered under, and flying the black on this would be daft as it has 24 gun ports, and apparently only 4 guns. A privateer not only needs to register the ship but get a warrant from the crown. Two things you expressly cannot do if you steal it. Although if, somehow, you managed to legally obtain it and somehow make a time machine to go to the 1700's and become a privateer you'll be the slowest, most unarmed privateer in the history of the sea.
Thats Henry Morgan for yah
You would need to have a Letter of Marsque to be a privateer, but I get the Henry Morgan reference

why do people call a galleon a pirate ship?
English ones when they could catch them. They call this the information age, but you still got to look things up and they don't. they go by some fairy tail that they got off tv.
+Stephen Odell A Spanish galleon is a merchant ship armed with guns , and certain measures
Galleons were a commercial ship, mostly of them used to send gold to Spain, at same time it was armed with cannons

As a Spaniard, how did the Spanish civil war affect perception of the Spanish empire, and how does it affect modern Spain? Don't answer if you don't want to, but I don't know any Spaniards, and I'm curious.
@@jeremy1392 The Spanish Empire was long gone when the Civil War started (1936-1939), the reason why the nowadays Spain is still affected is basically because the group that won the war were the Right Wing/Nationalists, (Take on note that the Nationalists were supported by Nazi Germany and Axis while the Republicans/Left Wing were supported by the Soviets) and those a dictatorship with iron fist started for almost half the 20th century in Spain. Now even though the war and dictatorship ended there's still a big social division between the Right and Left wings...
@@user-jo2cv1dy1b . the social division that generated the civil war was totally forgotten thanks to the good government of Spain until 1975, but afterwards the politicians devoted themselves to raising the issue again and again, even though people in general still do not remember or worry about the civil war. What always fascinates me, among other things about these ships, is the amount of rigging that goes into them. The rope - miles of it. I always wish I could learn all the ropes reasons and how they work. Some of it is obvious enough why the are there. How they came up with the design of it all. Incredible.
Pirate ships and merchant ships are different things....
+Hewwy where do you think Pirates got there ships????
+aaron95cobra Good point, but a merchant ship isn't a pirate ship unless it's captured and kept by pirates.
+aaron95cobra Most Caribbean merchants would trade in calico, rum, sugar and so on - goods which were imperishable. This meant that speed wasn't of paramount importance and storage was the pinnacle of a merchant ship's value to its captain and crew... Pirates, therefore, preferred sloops or gunboats which were nimble, fast and had superior firepower and crew capacity in order to chase, outrun and outgun ships.
Not really a pirate ship, pirates were only a small fraction of the users of these ships, they were used from the 16th to 18th centuries for many purposes
Ryan Lintott mainly trade
Yarr but pirates, me hearty!
Ryan Lintott He's refering more to the fantasy pirates. Not the real ones, they're boring. No curses, no treasures, no ARGH.
They preferred using smaller, faster craft like schooners
