Yeah, to be perfectly honest, I dislike base persona 5 story because of it's "rotten adult !1!!" tone. That's why I put off playing P5 Royal, as I assumed it would have the same tone. I couldn't be more wrong, P5R 3rd semester is like a whole other game. Now I regret not playing it sooner haha

The hangover from this game is so brutal. It took less than a year before I started my second playthrough. I just had to come back to see all my friends again.
This game is beautiful. I finally played Persona 5 Royal back in January, and it made me realise how much joy there is in simple daily activities you can do, or time you can spend with your friends. Since then, I was just trying more and more things that I've never tried, and they made me happy! I especially got into dancing, thanks to spin-offs as well, and I feel much better about how I spend my day now, no matter what I do! It's incredible how easily this game makes you think of your activities as leveling up your social stats and confidants
I love Persona 5 Royal so MUCH. It's actually wild. The song playing during the end has lyrics that pretty much seem to be Joker missing Akechi after he disappeared. Or thinking about how he'll disappear if they continue with the mission. Very sad. Especially due to their complicated relationship. Anyway, there are a number of reasons why I think Maruki's claims about Akechi are unintentionally false and he's still alive. For starters, there's a cut scene in the game files that takes place with Akechi in rehab and he mentions having to go back to help someone he owes. Obviously, this isn't taking place in Royal time since he'd be with the group. The original vanilla timeline occurs. Which would suggest that he survived the vanilla game engine room soon as well but just escaped. I'm guessing this scene would've played with the other rank 10 confidants who tried to help Joker while he was in Juvie but was cut out so as to not spoil the surprise. The other confidants only get a scene where they help Joker when you get them to rank 10. And what's the only way to get the true ending where Akechi shows up? By getting him to rank 10. He ends up doing something to help Joker too and is presumably leaving. If you don't get him to rank 10, I think he flat out doesn't show up in the cutscene. So it's not like a hallucination. As for Maruki's claims, his hold on the world has been stated to be unstable so he hasn't gotten to knowing what everyone is thinking just yet. In fact, he hasn't even met Akechi. He only knew what Joker knew and wanted. Joker assumed Akechi didn't survive the engine room because of Futaba's claims, but he wanted a second chance with him. So Maruki assumed Akechi was dead and acted accordingly by giving him different memories. But if Akechi is just here because Joker wished for it and Maruki actualized it, why didn't he disappear immediately like Wakaba or Okumura once the actualization was broken and Joker knew the truth? Because the only thing Maruki did was pull Akechi away from wherever he was, he didn't bring him back to life to all. Joker's wish was for Akechi to have a second chance with him. For him to show up. And so by granting that wish, Akechi was yanked away and brought over to Joker. Once Maruki is taken down, Akechi goes back to where he was. Akechi and Joker live on. And whether soon or far away in the future, they'll have their rematch. But until then, Joker's holding on to his glove. Until they meet again.
The problem with your theory is that Akechi would have been in Shido's palace when he got yoinked, since the last thing he remembered for sure was facing off against Shido's cognition of himself
@@eddmario I mean, I think there are a lot of reasonable explanations. For one, Maruki doesn't actually know what happened to Akechi. And his actualization affects people's memories. He bases Akechi's survival purely on what Joker saw. And Joker doesn't think Akechi survived. So if Akechi was trying to recall where he'd been, he'd come up blank. Because Joker's last time seeing him was in Shido's Palace. Another possible theory is that Akechi actually doesn't remember what happened to him post Shido's Palace. It's a small detail but he always holds his head like he has a headache or migraine after using Call Of Chaos on himself. And that's the last thing he does before his huge fight with the Phantom Thieves. If he had massive amounts of physical and mental trauma, there's a chance he fell into a coma or state of slumber after escaping the Palace. Theories. Like I said. But the fact that ATLUS has continued to keep Akechi's fate ambiguous and mysterious instead of outright confirming anything is really odd to me.
It's like trying to explain how CODE GEASS SPOILER Lelouch is still alive at the end of R2. You really have to search for straws and for what? To make the ending significantly less impactful than it is?
All our confidants helping us is always impactful. Iwai using his Yakuza connections to reach high authority figures, Mishima and his emotional speech collecting signatures, Ohya going back to the street to gather evidence, Shinya.... Trying his best?... And all the others too are impactful.
Really fitting that Maruki’s original Persona is called Azathoth, who is said to be the end of reality once it wakes up, birthing it anew upon entering its slumber once more. It mirrors Maruki’s own awakening, where once his Persona awakened, the original reality was erased, replaced with Maruki’s ideal one; and once Azathoth was defeated and went into slumber again, the original reality returned. His evolved Persona is just as fascinating though. Adam Kadmon, the first man, one untainted by any desire or evil, as if telling the player that Maruki’s wish is purely altruistic and truly made for the sake of humanity, as well as perhaps that he will be the first man of his new reality, a man bestowed with godlike powers similar to Adam himself.
IIRC Azathoth in books also is said to have dreamed all of the original reality into existence, so that matches too- the new reality is being woven from Maruki's own dreams
Fun fact: Akechi learns to take a hit for Joker before learning Endure, and is the only party member to do so. He actually makes a cameo as a background character in the ending cutscene if you got him to rank 10, as that means he has learned Endure and technically survives but stays in hiding. That's the reason he's there.
@@Seacret_AgentCan't speak for the original comment but Akechi should almost certainly be alive considering Ryuji didn't die in Shido's Palace. If Ryuji can be killed by explosions and be fine, Akechi can survive being shot.
@insomniac9318 I've always seen it as Ryuji being EXTREMELY lucky he didn't die and that the explosion didn't directly hit him and instead the force from the explosion catapulted him into the water. He was then thrown far enough away that he left the area of distortion and exited the metaverse. Akechi, on the other hand, was shot point blank by his shadow. Futaba was unable to pick up on his reading. Sure, there's a chance that he escaped/didn't die, but my point was just that Akechi surviving was not a fact, but a theory. It has never been proven that Akechi lived. Atlus has never confirmed or denied that.
@Seacret_Agent Both endings in which we see his silhouette as we ride the train don't count? Additionally, even if Ryuji was lucky he shouldn't be able to move around so freely after that much concussive force and the impact with the water. Admittedly, Atlus is super unclear on how it all works for these debates. So you may be right.
@@insomniac9318 Right, there's a chance he is alive. My entire point of my comment was to say it is not a fun "fact" as we have never had definitive proof he is alive. To each their own, but I just wanted to clarify that he is not proven to be alive
Harem beatdown comment aside, this game was a masterpiece. Virtually everything about it was perfect, and one of the most engaging JRPG experiences I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. The story, the gameplay, the characters, the music, Ebert has no idea what he's talking about when he said video games can never be art, because while there are plenty of pretentious titles out there who try and use incomprehensible shlock to instill a false sense of meaning as a way to compensate for lackluster gameplay, _Persona 5 Royal_ gave us very exciting and diverse gameplay along with a strong narrative and well-rounded characters that make it more than just a game. It really did feel like you stepped into another world when playing it. Is it any wonder this is the most popular title from Atlus so far? Square Enix should take notes.
Square Enix' Chrono Trigger and Nintendo's Mother 3/EarthBound 2 (unofficial localized name, according to the fanbase) are probably the only few "classic" RPGs that match up. Chrono Trigger is known for its exceedingly swift pacing and popularized the term "New Game+." While it's not the hardest RPG around, it still provides a well-balanced experience for the player with its simplicity (I'd argue its mechanics are much easier to understand than Persona 5 Royal) and was seemingly Square's first ever turn-based RPG to not include any annoying random encounters. It was often regarded as one of the greatest video games ever designed by Square. You're never in an area/dungeon for too long, and the game respects the player's time whenever they wish to continue the story. Mother 3, part of the Mother/EarthBound series, is a GBA game that was never released in the West (for various reasons) but has one of the most impressive fan-translations ever made. The story has been regarded as decently emotional for a 16-bit game, especially near the end. It seems to have themes of death that people must push forward through to grow. The gameplay is still solid by Mother gameplay standards, and the characters (especially the main character) are all decently likable.
45:35 This. This is one of the things I miss most from Billy. His screams are unlike anything else and conveys so much emotion. Why… why did we have to lose him!? 😭
I love the effort they put into Dr. Maruki's character is not evil it's just that he's misguided. I get it from both sides. He doesn't want the world to suffer what he suffered, so he put so much effort into making sure that everybody's dreams come into reality without any hardships. But for the Phantom thieves, they look at it as you're robbing people out of their chance of growth and development. A chance to grow from defeat and heartache is a part of life that none of us can escape from. I love the part where Joker tried to pull him up. You can hear Joker's Agony and struggle he's using every ounce of his strength to pull Dr Maruki up from death. He lost his will and heartbroken, Android he feels he has nothing left to live for he told him to let me go. Your eyes are just as bright and honest as ever. You keep your head up no matter what that's true respect between rivals and enemies.
Im so happy to be able to watch one of my favorite youtubers play, discuss and love this game. Your commentary on the game's themes and characters has been amazing to watch. Thank you so much for this playthrough. PS: Check out the credits for the base game, the cutscene shows more of Joker with the Phantom Thieves and the end credits dong is fire.
Yeaaah, I teared up again lmao. What a blast this has been to watch. It's always a bittersweet moment to realize you'll never be able to experience the game the way you did the first time, and knowing we all have our share of precious memories in doing so, but once more, it's been one hell of a ride watching Caleb play this game. It's crazy. I've seen several playthroughs of this game already, but none have ever been insightful or thought provoking as this one with all of the discussions Caleb brought up during the playthrough, and his deep appreciation of Akechi and Maruki (RIP Billy Kametz). Persona 4 Golden was already super fun, but I have to say, I'm definitely going to miss this playthrough in particular. Looked forward to watching these every upload. Having that said, however, I look forward to the day Caleb decides to play Strikers. That's going to be so lit. Not just that either, eventually we're all going to get our hands on Persona 5 Tactica, and Persona 3 Reload. Sooner or later Persona 6 will be finally revealed for everyone to witness, too. Man oh man, the hype is real! The Persona hype train keeps moving full speed ahead!
Thank you Caleb for the playthrough. I watched all the VODs on Twitch as they came out, me being EU I never was able to watch live cuz of the timezone difference. But what an absolute journey. Thank you.

Time to finish this. We started by getting in this new school and home after being sued for attacking a politician, we're gonna get back after fist fighting our therapist.
I loved how everyone was like "Yeah we'll help get joker out of jail" meanwhile Iwai: "I guess I'll just call in a favour from the Yakuza". 100% it was between the Phantom Thieves, Iwai and Yoshida who actually got you out of jail.
Thank you for playing Persona 5 Royal! I couldn't catch a stream (because of time zones ...), but I enjoyed every vod stream! Persona 5 is my first persona game and it opened the way for diving into the other persona games. P5 is my most favorite Persona game! 53:19/57:46 About those cutscenes in P5 (vanilla): Normally Persona 5 ended at christmas which those scenes reference because it's the time Joker turn himself in to the police. The epilogues are pretty similar, but they change it a bit to match the P5R ending. There are exclusives cutscene in each ending. I really would recommend you to watch the Persona 5 Ending and also both P5 & P5R Bad Endings! P5R Bad Ending is somewhat mind blowing ^^
Overwrote UA-cam keeps glitching recently and not letting me edit Character development! I figured out how to outsmart the glitch (which still exists after 10 months, thanks UA-cam)
Royal elevated this game immensely. Maruki has got to be the best "antagonist" in the series for me. I just didn't know what side to take... I was devastated because he just had the best intentions and the lyrics to the fight sounded like he was pleading us players to let him help us.
Hell yea, picking Futaba makes you even more of a king in my book. I chose her for every playthrough except one time I chose Sumire. She's my favorite character in this game.
It just dawned on me that a good amount of the non party member social links are people with some kind of influence either socially or due to their job. I really like the added scene of the social links coming together because a big thing i take away from the original final boss section is that you dont really need superpowers to change the world it’s enough to have a positive effect on others and do the things that are in your ability to do. I think Joker summoning his ultimate persona got that across but this part definitely goes above and beyond.
This game is something else. I just beat Royal the other night and damn the fight with Maruki and all your confidants coming to help the protag got me misty eyed. Rest in Peace Billy Kametz.
I beat this two weeks ago and my brain is still reeling from the ending. Maruki boss fight is definitely one of the best boss fight I've ever experienced. The fight itself, the music, the cinematic, they're all *chef kiss*
@@kozhcaelum8495 it was definitely a fight you really didn't want because of how much you have bonded with Maruki but you know it has to be done not just to restore reality but to save a friend who had lost his way.
@@cemiller I'm actually more "bad ending" type, though I also think maruki went overboard with the whole happiness thing and his plan is flawed. Honestly, if he tone it down and perfected it, I would choose this ending in a heartbeat. One other big reason why I pick true ending is because it's implied that maruki will isolate himself (in his palace) since he had to keep monitoring reality. I just can't let him live that painful, lonely life.
I first played the spinoff game Persona 5 Strikers which takes place during the 1st summer break after the main game ends. It's alot shorter and somewhat simplified, but it does explore different ideas about cognitive worlds and opens up more questions for the future main game.
The last little anime cutscene always irked the crap out of me. It’s not that the ending is bad… but because I played and LOVED original P5 so much the ending where you’re driving off on the highway with your friends just hit me so much harder… I also just feel With The Stars and Us is just a better song than Our Light. I mean, both are masterpieces… but With The Stars and Us is just more of a masterpiece. I feel like an epilogue scene like they did in P4G that had Maruki involved in someway while in Le’Blanc woulda sat better with me. Which is really weird cause everything else about the last story arc is *The second best story arc Persona/MegaTen has done* (first best being P3FES January-March 5th) and Throw Away Your Mask is my favorite song in Persona/MegaTen. It’s just that one anime cutscene that just irritates the crap out of me.
Caleb, watching you play through P5R and seeing all your reactions to everything was an absolute delight. I highly recommend that you play Persona 5 Strikers some day. It continues on the story (from vanilla P5, not Royal, so no Sumire or Maruki, sadly), and although the gameplay is completely different, it's still alot of fun.
There are 2 ways to beat the Azathoth phase: Target Maruki, who is sometimes healed by the Healing Tendril, but going for him will get you a victory when he gets to 0 HP Target Azathoth, who puts Maruki down to 1 HP when defeated Either way, the fight is way too easy. Yaldabaoth’s fight is way more difficult and complex. Especially those ailments. Edit: I think this is what Yusuke’s scene for helping Joker out of prison would be: Yusuke: This man, a great friend of mine, helped me out of my slump, and let me see the true meaning of art. Yet he is now chained down in juvenile detention, what a failure of a police force we have! Kawanabe: As you are the man who won my competition, and you are a former victim of Madarame’s actions, I will do all I can to help your friend. If the people invested in the arts realise you were only able to paint that masterpiece thanks to his help, and that he is now in prison, they are sure to assist me. Yusuke: Truly, I am in your debt. You have helped me grow into a master of an artist; I cannot be more thankful than I am.
@@Djay_B Reload is an absolutely amazing remake, but unfortunately it's not exactly the definitive version of P3 everyone was hoping for. At the very least in my opinion it's not.
I wish they did more with the last boss fight and not end it with a cut scene. More like a battle that follows up with a cut scene i would prefer. Overall, I enjoyed you playing the series. I played this to death because i love the themes so much of each character and each boss and how each conflict makes you think about some pretty important topics in life as well as the culture in this world. The Harem and the many many interesting ideas they came with this game. Sometimes i wish the game fixed certain stuff like make Morgana more interesting and stronger as a character and not a joke. Also have some skip option for waiting the amount of days if you wish. I would also think they should have given more stuff to the characters that make you connect with them even more like a customs or mini games in certain level's. That would have made way more game play during some parts of the game. More alternative scenes like if you messed up on a date or something else, it lowers your confidant connection stats. Plenty of things to make this game even better. I am just glad they made this version of Persona. The characters in the anime need to be way better. It was just a replay of the game minus other ideas that could be in it. I wonder if Caleb will play Persona 5 Strikers? Love the game play. You have some brains Caleb. You guess so many scenes when playing that it was wild your calls. Just pretty cool. Love your thoughts and words. Also happy tears 😭☺😁
True but the last fight was more a scene battle. You just outlast it and that felt hollow to me. I wanted to go out fighting and then the fist comes down and then epicness. I wanted that boss to feel longer too. It stops so early for me. Might be because i played it too much. I still loved Maruki's part. It is so sad.
Persona 6 can’t come any quicker, like it’s been… what? 7 years since p5? And 4 since royal. P4G came out in 2012 and so the gap between that and p5 was 4 years or so, accounting covid, the gap between royal and 6 should be 5ish years. Could come out next year, but then again they’ve been working on p3r as well, maybe Persona 6 could be another couple of years…
the valentines stuff is so wack to me. so like, they aren't mad that you cheated on them? they're mad that.. you didn't spend time with them on an asinine day made of capitalistic purpose? why the hell isn't Sojiro mad at you for breaking his little girl's heart?? why don't they all hate you?? why do they even communicate with you ever again after this??? like what? the way Atlus treat women is so gross.
I watched this whole play though to see who you who you who you would pick in the end and I feel completely betrayed and my whole time watching was wasted, coward.

1:40:30 - For those who want to skip to "that" part.
11:32 edit blew my mind goddamn. nothing feels more eldritch than the game somehow "infecting" the _streamer's entire display_
Thank you Caleb for the playthrough. I watched all the VODs on Twitch as they came out, me being EU I never was able to watch live cuz of the timezone difference. But what an absolute journey. Thank you.
Persona 5 will always be in my memories
1:10:00 Had to save this moment here lol. This is the funniest set of scenes i have ever seen. The comment section got me dying. Also i like the fact that he hangs with the boys first 😂
Sojiro is Best Dad Ever!! 1:43:42 Also Haru lmao. Dead and Ryuji
Time to finish this. We started by getting in this new school and home after being sued for attacking a politician, we're gonna get back after fist fighting our therapist.
Also 1:09:25 Goodbye Phil. Thanks for doing nothing again.
46:22 hehehehe glad the transition gave someone as much brainworms as me
I loved how everyone was like "Yeah we'll help get joker out of jail" meanwhile Iwai: "I guess I'll just call in a favour from the Yakuza". 100% it was between the Phantom Thieves, Iwai and Yoshida who actually got you out of jail.
maruki is one of the best characters in fiction i dont even care
Thank you for playing Persona 5 Royal! I couldn't catch a stream (because of time zones ...), but I enjoyed every vod stream!
Persona 5 is my first persona game and it opened the way for diving into the other persona games. P5 is my most favorite Persona game!
53:19/57:46 About those cutscenes in P5 (vanilla):
Normally Persona 5 ended at christmas which those scenes reference because it's the time Joker turn himself in to the police.
And I think to myself... What a shame you overwrote the save.
Overwrote
UA-cam keeps glitching recently and not letting me edit
Character development! I figured out how to outsmart the glitch (which still exists after 10 months, thanks UA-cam)
I was hoping he’d end the vid by looking up the alt ending on UA-cam or something.
@@TheGeminiZodiac2 He does this in the next stream
I'm a little disappointed that he didn't include the jazz club scene
Royal elevated this game immensely. Maruki has got to be the best "antagonist" in the series for me. I just didn't know what side to take... I was devastated because he just had the best intentions and the lyrics to the fight sounded like he was pleading us players to let him help us.
Hell yea, picking Futaba makes you even more of a king in my book. I chose her for every playthrough except one time I chose Sumire. She's my favorite character in this game.
wait, did he miss the jazz club guy's goodbye?
No, he went. It just got cut from the highlights.
GGs, what a wonderful series
1:45:55 Funniest moment in the game for me 😂
all the other characters: something about not backing down
akechi: "nah but this genuinely hurts like hell, please hurry the fuck up!!"
"I do want that chocolate!"
- "What a truly foolish end..."
I really hope you play Strikers sometime too, it has a wonderful story
I love that ann is such a ride or die that she wasn't mad that kurisupi had other girlfriends but that he had a favorite
このBGM本当しめくくりって感じで好きなんよなぁかっこいいし
Just finished the game last night. Man this was amazing
There are 2 ways to beat the Azathoth phase:
Target Maruki, who is sometimes healed by the Healing Tendril, but going for him will get you a victory when he gets to 0 HP
Target Azathoth, who puts Maruki down to 1 HP when defeated
Either way, the fight is way too easy.
Yaldabaoth’s fight is way more difficult and complex. Especially those ailments.
Edit: I think this is what Yusuke’s scene for helping Joker out of prison would be:
Yusuke: This man, a great friend of mine, helped me out of my slump, and let me see the true meaning of art.
Can't wait for P3R to release and for you to play it
God... I CAN NOT wait for P3 Reload
I'm praying they don't fuck it up
Well, did they? Cuz I certainly don't think so!
@@Djay_B Reload is an absolutely amazing remake, but unfortunately it's not exactly the definitive version of P3 everyone was hoping for. At the very least in my opinion it's not.
@@VBandit47 Well...not yet.
@@Djay_B I'm not just talking about
The Answer.
@@VBandit47 You aren't getting FEMC. She wasn't even in FES.
Remember, now that he has gotten this games true ending he has to tell us the *OTHER* reason he would ever miss a stream
14:21 this man sounds so happy XD
Ooohhh looking forward to you BG3 Playthrough next! 🐻 😉
More? The true last boss was like 6 rounds of fight.
1:44:24 you broke her heart. Unforgivable
Omg Shayne Topp from Smosh on the Thumbnail plats Persona 5 royal
If you plan on playing Persona 5 Strikers you have to watch the original true ending since it was a sequel to that before Royal came out.
Are you planning on playing Reload that comes out next friday?
Now that you finished P5R, i do recommend watching the Proof of Justice ova, it's nothing too special but it's kinda nice.
I'm actually going to miss you playing this so much. I think i'll watch the VODs. Also maybe play p5 strikers? I think i'm going to soon.
He didnt go to the darts and billards place and collect akechi’s glove.
Caleb: *Cheats on Sojiro's daughter with like 9 other women*
Also Caleb: "How could he abandon me like that?!"
This is why you stay loyal to one waifu
Congratulations on the scumbag romance ending.
part 6 flashbacks
Not the bear romance simulator!
1:46:00 It was worth dating everyone just for this message
What was the final “for real” count?
1:46:01 the comedic timing of this text fkin kills me 😭😭😭😭
42:30 this moment bro
Please tell me you’re going to look up the other endings
Persona 6 can’t come any quicker, like it’s been… what? 7 years since p5? And 4 since royal. P4G came out in 2012 and so the gap between that and p5 was 4 years or so, accounting covid, the gap between royal and 6 should be 5ish years. Could come out next year, but then again they’ve been working on p3r as well, maybe Persona 6 could be another couple of years…
Will u play persona 5 strikers
One last time.... Obligatory for real ?!
Has he said whether he’s playing strikers?
First time seeing the Royal ending, and I'll be honest I kinda prefer the original's Road Trip.
Sooo... Persona 5 Strikers next? XD
Its also a good game and nice continuation.
Next Persona 5 Strikers
I think you Min-Max'd a little too hard there, bud.
1:41:24 Harem jumpscare
SUSHIIIIII!
36:15 😭😭😭😭😭
A Futaba chad as well I see. Same, same. Joker and Futaba are gonna get married and Joker will take over Le Blanc one day.
239????? Wtf
Now u gotta play p5 strikers
karma
This dude pulled a cheating playthrough 💀
.
please play the sequel Persona 5 Strikers
the valentines stuff is so wack to me. so like, they aren't mad that you cheated on them? they're mad that.. you didn't spend time with them on an asinine day made of capitalistic purpose? why the hell isn't Sojiro mad at you for breaking his little girl's heart?? why don't they all hate you?? why do they even communicate with you ever again after this??? like what? the way Atlus treat women is so gross.
I watched this whole play though to see who you who you who you would pick in the end and I feel completely betrayed and my whole time watching was wasted, coward.
Noone really gets a happy ending in your version. Just the honest version. Like think of futaba, her mom is dead. Happiest part about this ending is akechi is dead.
a happy ending doesnt mean everything has to be perfect
Now play P5S/Persona 5 Strikers
Why did you skip the glove part are you crazy?
1:22:16 well at no point in p3 are there plans for the mc to leave at the end of the year :)
