The Schism of National Culture

Guillermo Bonfil Batalla was a Mexican writer who was also an experienced ethnologist and anthropologist. Documenting Mesoamerica's rich history, he wrote the book Mexico Profundo, a staunch argument for the revival of indigenous identity. Curating the best of Mexican culture, Bonfil contends that his country has been dominated by the "imaginary Mexico," a fictitious imposition of the West. This imposition denies the cultural reality, and therefore the sovereignty, of the actual Mexicans - the common citizenry.
