They said he couldn't bring his new spider friend back alive. Poor choice of words.
None of his students have exploded to our knowledge, he’s genuinely trying to teach them vital spells to protect themselves from soul sucking monsters, drove out the Harry Potter fan infestation, and cheered on his students for their successes. Besides a few questionable things like intentionally making himself their boggart I would say Prof. Gollingsworth is doing a pretty decent job.
Honestly three deaths is pretty mild compared to the repeated implosions.
