I went to a private school from kindergarten till I graduated and it wasn’t near as fancy as some of the ones shown but it definitely was better than the public school ones. We had our lunches catered, had to wear uniforms with our school logo, the boys had to tuck in their shirts and wear a belt, etc. lol there were a lot of rules. I believe it was 6k a year to attend.

Hi! I actually live really close to the first private school. It's Valley Christian and the line that turns from poverty to wealth is actually pretty gross imo. The hill that it's on is a true separation from the rows and rows of homeless camps below it. I actually live right behind those rows. I grew up looking up at that giant school that was so shiny, while waiting for the bus on southside with my mom. There would be so much garbage that went on and on for miles, police activity was high, and I couldn't go anywhere without my mom (up until my 20s). I don't hate the kids or the parents who send their kids there, I just hate the system and how a lot of us end up suffering just because we weren't born into wealth.

as a non-american, it feels so surreal watching these tiktok videos because our public and private schools aren't that different from each other in terms of basic facilities and people, and prolly like 90% of schools here require uniforms. plus, most people just take public transport because it's more efficient, but i do see more parents driving their kids to school in black BMWs if they go to private schools.
idk maybe i got lucky and got into a decent public school, but i never felt like my school was terrible and i never felt inferior to private school students. in fact, i feel grateful for public schools because i don't have to pay like 10k in our currency (about 1.2k usd) for a semester.

tbh, the private schools here aren't as fancy or expensive as shown. people drive Jeeps, Hondas, etc... more cost efficient and better cars than a Ferrari (which has awfully expensive parts, and the car is sucky). the fanciest I have seen is a live-in/day option boarding school on a large acreage where people just dump their kids off at most of the time, you get to care for the animals, clean the corridors and such after class and your own room with a roommate. the teachers live on campus in their own houses or near it, it's actually a very sweet school.

When I was younger I lived in the highest rated school district in the US at the time. I went to public school, and never experienced bad facilities or the like. When I moved as a teen to an area that was very poor, the schools reflected that. My sis went to governor's school, and it looked like many of the private schools on tiktok. The highschool and governor's school were only a few minutes from each other.

Same here. My public school had the best test scores and most students graduated with high GPA. It was blue ribbon school in our State. I liked my school. There were fights occasionally and vandalism inside the bathroom stalls, but most people hung out with eachother and lived in the same area. Some students smoked cigarettes and took drugs. Lol I loved my school though. I only was upset about the horrible cafeteria food that they make poor public school kids eat especially if they couldn't afford to bring food from home.

I was in public schools all my life and i loved it. The chaos made school life much funnier haha my parents put me in public school on purpose because they always felt like kids are missing out if they’re in a private school. In public schools you have kids from all different kinds of cultures, backgrounds and lives basically. They said in a private one ur in this bubble with all the same people and the connection to reality is somehow missing. And i‘m happy they did that for sure hahhaha

Public schools rely a lot on property taxes for funding, so generally, the richer the area, the nicer the school. I'm sure a lot of the public schools in this video are from underfunded, lower income areas. Of course, the more academic success a school achieves, the more they can level that for resources to break the cycle, but that's really hard when you don't have enough to teach students properly in the first place.

  • @justinlee810
    @justinlee810 2 роки тому +136

Public schools are maintained by local taxes (I think) so that's why there's such a big gap. Some neighborhoods are just richer than others. It's why systemic racism is so insidious...poor people are forced into lower income neighborhoods and oh look, those kids grow up to go to terribly-funded schools and have fewer opportunities...and then they grow up to have even fewer chances to succeed, get married, have kids...cycle continues.
I say this as a product of private schools (although my school didn't look NEARLY as nice as some of those, I feel like those were European schools for the ultra wealthy). We are definitely given major advantages over our public school counterparts and yes, it needs to improve. But that falls under the state governments, not much Biden could personally do. I mean, he certainly could MORE, it's just unlikely because the states simply do not listen to the federal government. Because FREEDUMB! and other American things. Yee haw.

Yet somehow, when I watch these videos, the private schools with 20k annual tuition have great facilities. Obviously my school was a million times better than the local public schools, but with 70k annual tuition, these other schools are making the administration look like they're sitting on their asses(which they are)... I'm from Netherlands, my dad is dutch and in the military and my moms american and moved overseas to be with him. When i was 7, we had to move to the US for 4 years. The dutch military paid for my sister and i's education so we went to a private school that was just outside the military base. The only big difference was that everything was in English and, ya know, the culture shock. Anyways, my parents split and bc my dad was active military, my parents decided we needed to live with my mom who wanted to stay in America even tho my dad *had* to make back to NL. So since the military wasn't covering our education anymore, we where suddenly in public school in the US and it was SO DIFFERENT. My first American public school, there where always issues with plumbing, heating, ac, and never enough school supplies. My second public school (bc we had to move) we had 2 active shooters- one who walked around the entire building and pointed a rifle thru the windows at us etc and the second one was a man evading arrest and decided the best thing to do would be to break into our school and hide there. Oh and 1 "bomb threat" which was really a kid who blew up the microwaves in the cafeteria by microwaving a bunch of spoons (??). We had to evacuate the building bc of the fire and stand in 3ft of snow for like 40 minutes. And of coarse, let's not forget the occasional substitute teachers who would hit us or sell us drugs etc.
    So yeah, the American Dream.

I went to public school, but my schools were more towards the high end of public, for the most part, I guess. But the area I grew up has been developed even more, since then, with even pricier homes. Some of the schools were in old buildings, at the time, but since then they've had brand new ones built. My middle school had been recently built, when I attended it, and now (a decade+ later) they built a whole new middle school again.
Some of the other old ones, like my high school, they just add onto. When I graduated they were building a new science & math building (yes, we of course called it the S&M building to the staff's fury^.^), because the floor always groaned in the upstairs area of the old building & my senior year I think we had two incidents of people falling through... Our social studies classes were also in temporary buildings (think one room trailers) while we waited for the new building to be built (only the social studies teachers had been out there for like 5 years...) Our theater had old wooden chairs that were breaking, but there was talks of getting those fixed.
But we had lots of clubs & sports, a well-equipped home ec building with stoves & lots of sewing machines, computer labs, two gyms, American football field, soccer field, two cafeterias with like several kitchens that offered different types of food, etc. We used to have an onsite mechanic study program, but that was stopped when an agreement with a local college was struck, and those students were bused to that class. Our dances were held at event space in the city, never in the gyms. When I graduated they were also starting testing having laptops in classrooms that the students could use.
But we also lived enough in the country that someone would always ride their horse to school once or twice a year as a joke & most the vehicles in the parking lot were trucks^.^
Oh, when I was in (I think) the sixth grade, our district went to wearing uniforms with a pretty strict dress code. They were just the polo shirt in a certain color with khaki or navy pants type, but most the staff was very strict about length of skirts, types of jackets in a specific color, no crazy hair colors, etc.

Wow, the difference between private vs public school and the students are so huge now! I grew up in the 80s/90s and I attended a private catholic school from elementary to highschool. Back then, you can only really tell the difference between private and public schools and the students by knowing the kids or by studying how they acted.
I lived in an area where if you're from a well-off family, then you're in a mostly peaceful territory, usually gated communities with security guards and stuff. Hell, I even had my very own bodyguard as a kid due to kidnapping threats (which kinda messed me up when it comes to my extreme need of privacy now as an adult). If you lived outside, then it was quite dangerous especially at night where there were street corner gangs who might mug you (or make unwanted love). Because of the difference in living conditions, people who lived in the safe peaceful territories were more timid and non-destructive, while those who lived outside were more brash, more rugged. This was how you could tell apart those who were attending private schools and those who went to public schools. Still, I can definitely say that I haven't seen that kind of wildness, destructiveness from public school students like what you've shown in your video. Those kids in your video are definitely on another level, to the point where the cops had to be called on them! It's sad that they don't seem to have discipline or concern for others who might want to use those facilities.
All of us wore uniforms, both private and public school students. The designs were very similar, unlike what your video showed where the kids from private school seemed like they're from a Harry Potter movie while those in public school wore normal every day clothes. I guess the idea of uniforms for everyone was to discourage discrimination and instill a discipline and mindset that even if we're from different lifestyles, we're all still the same human beings. That's definitely something I agree with and it worked. There was no problem for anyone being friends with fellow private or public school students. We acted differently but we all got along and enjoyed the same stuff.
Of course, those from above average families owned better stuff. Cars, toys, video game consoles, walkman/cassette players, those stuff, while those from the poorer area didn't really have much. The only time you could tell private and public students apart without knowing who they were, was when they were not in school. This was the time when everyone would just wear what they wanted and so the private school kids would be seen with better quality fashion than those from the public school. In highschool, I remember some of my friends being into racing cars (for me, I was a hardcore video gamer, owned all the consoles from Atari 2600 up to the PS2 and I'd always have my friends at my home playing with me lol!). They'd customize cars and turn them into something that looked like out of that Initial D anime. As for me, I was happy with a normal, non-racing car lol!
My friends who were from public school had different hobbies. They enjoyed playing billiards at the local restaurant that had lots of billiards tables, and sometimes I also played with them (I love 9 Ball!). I remember one of my friends hitting the cue ball so hard, it flew and hit another friend in the man-balls lol!!! Some of them loved reading books/novels, and they'd recommend or lend me books from time to time. I remember this one book my buddy lent me called "The Pearl" or something. It was my first time reading a book with somewhat x-rated content in it. I was pleasantly shocked, especially since I didn't get to read that kind of stuff from school or my usual books haha!
Anyway as for the actual differences in schools, well, not much really. My private school certainly didn't look magical. During its early days, it looked more like a really big house and the rooms were classrooms. There were lots of trees around, which I loved. My school expanded and we had a basketball court, which doubled as the volleyball court as well (I remember taking a volleyball shot to the head that was supposed to hit my crush who was sitting, one of my few heroic moments in life lol!). We didn't have a swimming pool. During my highschool days, the school expanded once again and this time we had a 4-story tall building, which was awesome! It felt more like a hospital than a school though haha! The bathrooms during my elementary days were crap. They were always wet for some reason, probably a mixture of badly aimed pee and water. Thankfully the bathrooms during my highschool days were much better and cleaner.
For public schools, it was almost the same. Sometimes we would visit public schools as some kind of friendship/exchange thing or for competitions. The public schools were much bigger than my private school! There were more students as well. They also had more trees (I like trees because I like catching beetles and spiders, they're cute)! I can honestly say that the only thing that made my school better, in terms of environment, were the air conditioning machines lol! The public schools only had electric fans, which barely worked. I'm the kind of person who's weak against the heat, and that's why I need aircon all the time and that's what made me say I prefer my private school.
In terms of actual education quality, it's pretty much the same. The curriculum was nothing new. We all learned the same stuff, same math, same science, same literature. I think the only advantage my private school had over the public ones, was that even back in the 80s and 90s, we already had computer lessons even in grade 1! Remember those giant floppy disks? Those were lots of fun, mine was color green lol! We also had an actual piano at school and every one of us learned how to play the piano, guitar and some other stuff. I remember one of my friends was a Korean boy named Tae Jim Kim and we fooled around with the guitar and played a Metallica tune instead of a folk song lol! A lot of the public schools didn't have these musical instruments for some reason. I think those two subjects were what gave us an advantage over the public school.
Well, it was fun reminiscing about my youth. When I was young, I wanted school to be over. Now as an adult, I wish I could be a youngster again who only worries about exams and crushes.

The main reason public schools vary so wildly in quality here is that school funding is decided by housing tax in the area. So areas with fancier houses (and usually richer owners) get more funding. While not all public schools are HORRIBLE, they’re still almost all extremely underfunded and have some kind of pest problem or something similar, and the kids there usually get into a lot more trouble than private school kids because no one cares about them enough to prevent the behavior before it happens.

My high school was technically a private school but only for kids who couldn’t stop getting in trouble and who were just coming out of jail and weren’t allowed in the main schools. Technically private but worse than public. Fights every day, several gun lock downs, drugs passed in the halls and school yard, assigned bathroom times, no contact, all doors had to be locked when class started. Had a cop stationed in the lobby. We had to do a dress check when we came in. It was wild, students didn’t give a shit. I remember on kid pissed in the trash cause the teacher refused to let him go. Another kid shattered bullet proof glass by punching it, shattered his hand too.
Dress code was stricter than public school before uniforms we could only wear jeans with a belt and t shirt or long sleeve, no jewelry, no accessories.
    I don’t miss it
